    Speaking of the two-face coin flipping scene in Wayne Manor, I remember someone headcannoned it to say two-face was deciding the fate of Chase, Alfred, and Bruce, not flipping it 3 times just for Bruce. I don't think thats the intention when they filmed it but a neat idea. I grew up watching Batman Forever and I dearly wish I could make the pilgrimage to see the Schumacher cut in theater but I can't. Thanks so much for covering this so in depth.

    I agree that this shouldn't be called "The Schumacher Cut" because even during publicity for Batman & Robin, Schumacher always said he was not interested in making a dark Batman movie. He wanted it light and comical. So I can't imagine he wanted Batman Forever to be dark. That was always Tim Burton's mandate as Batman Forever Exec Producer. So Schumacher was just shooting the script he was given.

    • @evanzaremba4722
      @evanzaremba4722 Год назад +1

      Yeah, Tim Burton's only involvement with Batman Forever was to hire his friend Joel Schumacher as director, and helping out hiring Lee and Janet Scott Batchler to write the screenplay for the film, and that's why in the opening credits of Batman Forever, Burton was credited as producer.

      Schmacher actually originally wanted to do Batman: Year One as he claims that to be his favorite Batman story, but the company said they wanted a family friendly movie, after the Returns backlash at the time, so he cave into those demands and did a movie that was inspired by the Batman stories he read as a kid from the 40s to 50s while trying to balance that darker version he wanted to have in the first place.

    I really like both the hair & nail salon scene, plus the talking head lambasting Batman on TV.
    The salon scene shows Riddler's technical ability to throw the Batcomputer off, explaining WHY Batman didn't stop their heists. It also sets up how and why Riddler can navigate the Batcave during the raid on Wayne Manor.
    As for 'Kenneth Frequency', that's a pull from the TV segments in The Dark Knight Returns, shot and laid out just like the comic panels. The guy talks in a shrill tone and is patronisingly verbose, but that's on purpose. You guys say he was terrible and should have been fired, but like... annoying talking head on television is what he was going for and it worked.

      Those were from the earlier drafts of Batman Forever meant for Michael Keaton to return. When Val Kilmer was selected as Michael's successor, they were rewritten several times, and it had only reference Michelle Pfeiffer's Catwoman during the "Batsignal is not a beeper" scene, Bruce talking to Dick about his past actions in the Batcave after the night fight with the Neon Gang, and the young Jack Napier killing Thomas and Martha Wayne in the flashbacks.

    Not sure that I like this new train of thought that anything good with Batman Forever is attributed to Schumacher, but anything bad is attributed to other parties. In this video you blame WB, Tommy Lee Jones, and Elliot Goldenthall. No mention of how Schumacher should’ve directed Jones into giving a good performance or how he should’ve asked Goldenthall to tone down the score.
    I’m sure WB is partially responsible for how the theatrical cut turned out, but let’s not act like Schumacher doesn’t also share partial blame for how it turned out.

    • @brooksproductions9573
      @brooksproductions9573 Год назад +2

      @@brooksproductions9573
      Like most people that defend this movie, I grew up with the film. Before I discovered Batman 1989 I’d say Forever was the primary Batman film I’d watch all the time.
      However, looking at it today as you said it’s fairly mediocre and forgettable. I think Kilmer gives a flat performance, Tommy Lee Jones is terrible, Chase Meridian is poorly written, and once Dick Grayson becomes Robin he’s wasted. Also, the Bruce Wayne arc feels incomplete and doesn’t make much sense due to everything that was edited out of it.
      To me it feels like the die hard fans of this film are pulling in aspects and details from the novelization, the script, and the deleted scenes and creating a better film in their heads. As it stands I can still enjoy the theatrical cut, but it’s definitely a lower tier Batflick for me.
      Having said all of that, I’m definitely interested in seeing a different cut of it. I do think the bits and pieces that are discussed in this video are vital to the overall story.
      And don’t get me wrong, I do think Schumacher was a talented filmmaker but he just made some strange decisions on these films. It certainly doesn’t feel like the same filmmaker that made Lost Boys and Falling Down.

    • @brooksproductions9573
      @brooksproductions9573 Год назад +2

      @jalenjohnson1662 I know right. This is a weird period in Schumachers career. I'm always up for an alternative cut or edit of a film. I think the cuts will make the film more complete, but it's not going to radically change the quality.
