Mercator maps distorts both shape and size but keeps longitude and latitude angles right that's why it's used in navigation including Google maps while for real size and location perception globe is best is Google earth.
I'm from West Bengal, and I did my masters in geography. I know those facts about cartograms and projections since my school and college days. Right now we are used to with Mercator map. It's hard to our eyes to accept any other map suddenly but we should start using Winkle triple projection map, it shows India's map quiet good.

I'm Geography PG student and I personally like world map based on Mollewide Projection which is similar to Winkle Tripel Projection.

Good afternoon sir, Being a Hydrographer I want to say something about this. All map projections are used for different purposes. Mercator projection is a mathematical projection which is used for precise position of the point or area not for actual shape.

Winkel Triple Projection map is better for us as a student when we study about the plate tectonics theory and the evolution of continents and water bodies its really useful for that. Also in that way we observing the each and individual prospects of our physical geography parameters.
I always used to feel very inferior while looking at the maps as an Indian but after seeing this video I feel so relieved lol

I mean India is still among the most densely populated countries. India ranks 30th out of 248 countries in population density. India also doesn't prefer vertical urbanization which makes Indian cities look even worse compared to less developed countries.

The answer is simple how to convert map representation from a global to a flat surface. First calculate surface area of each country in square miles or kilometers. Retain the known geographical outline of the countries and adjust the relative size of each country according to the surface area calculations.

With all new technologies why can't we make new maps....why base it on old patterns and old maps...
With all advancement we are now more worthy to give more accurate maps....
The problem is that it's scientifically impossible to perfectly project a round object on a flat plane. Even the most accurate projections we can come out with will have a lot of distortions no matter how much advanced technology we use.

Globe is not itself 100% correct, coz earth is not perfectly spherical.
Mercator maps are better for study because shapes are the same for study.
And in map distance approximation can be compromised.

I always used to compare russia with other countries.. like india china.. many big countries can be included.. I user to think why China population has highest number in compare to Russia while russia has biggest size...
I gifted my little cousin a globe a year ago just for this reason.
Proper mapping is very important and we unfortunately keep neglecting this fundamental thing, good that this is brought up!

No map is 100% accurate.
At school, I understood this unintended manipulation in size/shape of a map. However, still I prefer Mercator's projection merely because I am more used to it.
In india we also need to make maps with India at the center. Or Eurasia+africa in the west (on left side) n american continents in the east (on the right) China does this in many maps. It will also broaden students understanding of the world.
We can also create maps where north n south r switched. Since there is no "right way" to look at earth if u r observing it from space.
That will confuse even more ppl
My family migrated to US when I was young and I remember learning about all the different world maps in our history class as a child. Not sure about other parts of US but in Chicago this was 25 years back but they highlighted the pros and cons of all the world maps.

Wrinkle lll map is more accurate than others so we should switch to it which will be easier to understand the geography of a particular country.. and also I can see my India in correct size and in enlarged size as compared to others so I can easily reject those maps from now itself 😅😂

Maybe I was reading in class 2 or 3 & I was a very big fan of maps.....My elder sister who was reading class 8 or 9 that time & she had a map book..... I sometimes took that book & saw the maps, found new places, new countries...... There was a question in my school exam "what is the biggest island?"......& After seeing those maps over n over I wrote Greenland..... But my teacher crossed that answer & in fit of rage I brought my sisters map book & pointed him that see in the map which is the biggest 😂😂😂😂😂 But noone that time tell me about mercator projection

If you do not know, you have been poorly schooled and it is extremely sad that Prashant has opened your eyes and mind now. You have studied in a lousy school.
Since we are used to Merkster's map we are comfortable with it. Coming to disparity in appearance and actual size of countries we need to remember and interpret accordingly.
i used to tell my friend in school that distance between Mumbai to New york is almost same as Mumbai to Wellington in New Zealand though in Mercator projection new Zealand appears quite closer than New york.

I always doubted about the size of India and after this video I was right.
It would have been even better if in that first website, sir would also show by selecting India and drag it towards the poles to see India's actual size beside those seemingly large Russia and Greenland, or even maybe Australia. Anyway still a great video!
