- Die Filmaufnahmen zeigen ein riesiges Lager mit deutschen Kriegsgefangenen in der Nähe von Frankenberg, einen Gottesdienst für US-Soldaten bei 04:57 und die Siegesfeier der Alliierten im Hotel Fürstenhof in Bad Wildungen bei 06:56.
In vielen Orten des Kreises widersetzten sich Bürger*innen den NS-Durchhalteparolen und signalisierten mit weißen Tüchern die kampflose Aufgabe - trotz Androhung der Todesstrafe. In Frankenberg zog der Leiter der Edertalschule, Friedrich Meis, den amerikanischen Panzern entgegen. Am 29. März 1945 war der Krieg in Frankenberg zu Ende. Als Befreier wollten viele Frankenberger die Amerikaner noch nicht sehen. Zwei Wochen zuvor waren bei zwei schweren Bombenangriffen noch fast 100 Menschen in der Stadt ums Leben gekommen. Im Vergleich zu anderen Städten hat Frankenberg den Krieg aber relativ unbeschadet überstanden. Von knapp 4000 Wohnungen, waren nur rund 4 Prozent zerstört bei Kriegsende.
Anlässlich des 75.Jahrestages des Kriegsendes haben wir Archivmaterial für alle Regionen Hessens recherchiert - in unserem hr-Archiv und in den National Archives in Washington. Dort haben wir auch viele bisher unveröffentlichte Aufnahmen gefunden, die die US-Armee während Ihres Einmarsches und kurz danach in Hessen gemacht hat. Dieses Filmmaterial haben wir anhand der Angaben des Archivs nach hessischen Regionen und Kreisen sortiert. Da es oft keine Infos gab, wo genau die Aufnahmen entstanden sind: Habt ihr mehr Informationen, was in diesem Clip oder wer genau zu sehen ist? Dann meldet euch bei 75Jahre@hr.de.

Der junge Soldat im Vordergrund war mein Vater. Er hat "seine" Kompanie aus Ostpreußen nach Nordhessen geführt. Er hat davon berichtet wollte aber keine Einzelheiten schildern. Ich bin Historiker geworden auch mit dem Motiv die Hintergründe zu erforschen und der Nachwelt zu vermitteln. Das ist mir zum Teil gelungen, denn die Traumata sassen tief. Das Ergebnis ist "nie wieder Krieg"

Ich muss zustimmen. Schließlich führen die Europäer in der Europäischen Union keinen Krieg miteinander. Leider schicken sie wieder Munition in die Ukraine. Keinen Krieg zu führen, ist einigen Politikern zu schwer.

What a disaster the end of the War was. Watching these videos I am astounded at the number of surrendered soldiers refugees . I spent some time in Germany in the early 70's as a young U.S G.I . These videos help me to understand what I saw 30 years after the war .

War has an intoxicating allure to young and old when one's side is dominant, once the tables turn, nobody wants to admit they had been a willing participant.

I met a lot of former German wermacht soldiers in Germany during the 70s. Most were proud of their service but hated what it caused. It's a common question among soldiers. I never met a German that wouldn't tell you whether they had served.
@@grayharker6271 interesting, my takeaway from traveling with German teenagers around Europe back in the 80's was they spoke of their Grandfather's lament, if only the Winter of 42 hadn't been so cold....
My 4x great grandfather and Grandmother are from this area. My 4x great papa Ludwig August Wilhelm Siebert was born in Bad Arolsen Waldeck-Frankenburg. My 4 x great Grandmother Johanna Maria Margaretha Kuch was born in Kulte. This is sacred ground for me.
These are the fortunate ones compared to the Germans who surrendered to the soviets.
Very significantly large numbers of German soldiers who surrendered to the Allies ended up under Soviet control due to post war reparations manpower negotiations. Captive soldiers were tasked with rebuilding and clean-up. They were divvied up according to the negotiated need of the victor nations. The Soviets were deemed to have the greatest need. So those surrendering were maybe more fortunate... but not guarantied more fortunate.
What an emotional film. Proud but defeated soldiers, happy to have survived, devastating to have to surrender. Not many but surely there's guys in that crowd that had been fighting since 38. What do you go home to?
Many would have post traumatic syndrome before it was even understood. Starting over but scarred.
My father started his military service in 1936. He did not have any idea of the development to come. When the war was actually over, there was no perspective for him what he could do as a profession. His father who was a fanatic Nazi himself found a way to make him become an apprentice with the communal administration. He later became burgomaster of his home town.
@@wolfgangplatte2098 Of the many Wermacht soldiers I met in the 70s. I didn't meet one that wasn't a pretty nice person. Most just got caught up in the times.
At least we were civilized enough to send them home. While many in the SS got away with murder
@@grayharker6271 The myth of the clean Wehrmacht is a fantasy. The regular German armed forces (the Wehrmacht) were involved in the Holocaust or other war crimes during WWII. Wehrmacht waged on the Eastern Front, we now know, was more a criminal campaign than a conventional one. Soldiers murdered millions of civilians-including Jews-despoiled the region of economic resources, burned tens of thousands of villages to the ground, and starved millions of POWs. Starting as early as Sept 9,1939 - 300 Polish prisoners of war were murdered by the soldiers of the German 15th motorised infantry regiment in the Ciepielów massacre.

Waldeck isn't too far from my mother's home town. Bad Hersfeld. Been there several times, thankfully it survived the war without too much damage.

Indeed, it’s not easy to deal with / manage / handle such a large number of soldiers surrendering.
Good films, this one in particular reveals the logistical problems of surrendering soldiers. And you know they're all hungry.
What a difference between 1940, when the German soldiers entered Paris, proud and sure of their superiority by parading on the Champs Elysée, and 1945 when they appear ragged and defeated.

As in the first world war, the ordinary German soldier was just as happy when the war was over for them. The last people who want a war are the soldiers.
only when they started losing. They were quite joyful when they ran over Poland, Denmark, the Netherlands, France, etc. etc.
Don't kid yourself. Both wars had widespread and enthusiastic support from large segments of the German population. The only difference between the end of the WW I an the end of WWII is that at the end of WW I a lot of Germans felt they "really" hadn't lost. At the end of WW II, they were, for the most part, thoroughly disabused of that notion.
Yes, generally it is the non-soldier sending soldiers off to war and then wanting nothing to do with them when or if they return.

1991 war ich in Mengeringhausen bei der 2/65 als Wehrpflichtiger. Als ich den ersten Teil der 0/815 Reihe sah musste ich an( damals noch kein Bad😉)Arolsen denken. Kann es sein das dort gedreht wurde? Ich weiß das das jetzt keinen Bezug zu 1945 & ich hat. Aber Waldeck Frankenberg war eben auch ein Stück Heimat für mich. Nach der "Grundi" war ich Ordonanz im Georg Friedrich Kasino.
1991 im Georg Friedrich Kasino? Dann ist ihnen der Name Xaver Grosch vielleicht bekannt?

The Russians came fast from the eastside, so why to battle the Americans and allies, f.i.the cruel Ardennes offensive and D-day the result was that a great part of Germany was liberated by the Russians and the results are well known !!
Some German generals preferred to be surrender by the Americans but it was refused !

easter lilies and fruit trees blooming in the spring. the best season in germany. so many soldiers surrendered at once the allied logistics system was over whelmed. at the time it was not set up for surrender of the entire german military. but nobody died of starvation there. quite contrary we fed the german populace for a long time. but it wasn't easy. unlike the purposeful starvation of MILLIONS of captured russians. nazi intentions were evil. as well as that of the reds planning for the long term subjugation of nations behind the "iron curtain". ask anyone from estonia down to yugoslavia what they thought of being drafted into the soviet union and how well they were treated. what they thought of stalin was not spoken out loud for fear of death.

Most of the units on the western flank have run out of ammunition. No more supplies came. If available, it went to the Eastern Front. So the only thing left for the German soldiers was surrender.
