- A viewer recenetly asked me about some of the under hood functions and components of the Mahindra 2538 so I took a few minutes to outline a few of the key components and features.
I identify how to access the engine compartment, some of the key items and components, etc.
Sorry about the shaky video as I was filming with my phone.
You saved my day with the fuel pump primer button - thanks my man!
Thanks for the video. Nicely done. The first task with my 2538 was bush-hogging a field that the seller allowed to get over 6 foot during our closing period (gee, thanks buddy). Several times during the mowing, of about 10+ acres, the screen in front of the radiator clogged and without good air flow the gauge showed very hot water temp. The engine never ran any different so you must keep a consistent eye on this when running--as you always should... I took my leaf blower and blew from the rear of the radiator towards the front without removing the side panels. This worked like a champ... I've heard others ask about mowing inclines which I have to deal with in a steep way. The 2538 handles quite steep inclines very well even pulling the 5 foot bush hog. I purposely went 5' over 6' for this very reason figuring I could bank some power for the climbs.
Brilliant - Thanks for this great walk around. That explained a lot for me. It's impressive that Mahindra was able to engineer and design its way out of the need to have a particulate filter. No regens needed here. Keep it simple is a great motto. Sure looks like everything is placed nicely with great access. I like the primer too even though I hope not to run out of diesel!
+Canokie Snowback Yes the access under the hood to the major service items is pretty easy and all of the grease fittings seem to be easy to access. The mCRD system they came up with is by far the best design out there compared to DPF systems and all of the flaws inherit in that design. That alone set Mahindra way out in front when I was researching tractors. The emissions system on this tractor is essentially a scaled down version of what has been out in diesel trucks for well over a decade.
When you did your research, which Massey Ferguson's did you compare with? I'm looking at getting either a Mahindra 2555, or a Massey 2706E. They seem similar; No DPF or DEF either.
Jason Tooke I didn't look at Massey only because there's not a dealer in my area and I didn't know of anyone in my area that had one.
Well a few weeks ago I actually ran it out of diesel. Was trying to finish up some tilling and she crashed. Put 5 gallons in and primed it with the primer diaphragm. It was still a pain in the rump to get her going again. Moral of the story, keep fuel in her.
One thing I like about Mahindra is the fact that is doesn't use DEF.
That aluminum thing behind the engine oil filter is the fuel pre- filter (a paper element) then goes the primary fuel filter. I was hoping to see where the fuel cutoff valve is.
Thanks for the video.
Good information! Thanks for taking the time to do the video. I'm 2/3 finished with the 50 hour service. Changed the oil and oil filter and changed the front axle oil. I was told to clean the hydro screen when I change the hydraulic fluid but I'm not certain where it is located. Wondering if you could help me with that.
Just fyi, at 2:27, that's the hydraulic pump. Not the starter.
Ok cool. Thanks for the info!
That's pretty damn funny!
Great video. If you get a warning light that indicates water in the fuel filter, which of the two fuel filters do you need to drain, the pre-filter or the main filter? Also, it is correct that there's no way to shut off the fuel line to the fuel filters (meaning that fuel is going to drain constantly while you're working on the fuel filters)? Thanks in advance.
The sensor is on the drivers side fuel filter. And yes there is no shutoff valve between the tank and the primary filter on the passenger side.
nice video but to ask a dumb question where is the oil filler cap??
I recently purchased a 2016 2538 HST, I did not even have it a weekend when the loader failed, I documented it and took videos, I called the dealer on a Monday as I took delivery on it on that recent Friday, they said the Schows Truck Center Mahindra trained technician was out for 3 weeks and would not be able to look at it until then, so 4 (yes 4) weeks later they came and picked it up, they had the tractor 2 1/2 weeks, they (under direction of the Mahindra USA Service Director) said that the tractor did not come with a regen circuit and for 1500.00 they could change it out to a 1533 loader valve with the regen circuit, with no other options and not looking to void a warranty on a new tractor I proceeded with it, it made absolutely no change in its performance, after 3 months of them telling me "your just being a hard customer" (amazing, new tractor less than 5 hours on the clock and 3.2 of them they put on it, and this is the level of service after the sale) Mahindra USA sent a Service Director out to test it, needless to say it failed under real lifting tests, after that epic failure they completely changed the line of testing until they we able to say "its within spec" under there test the loader rated at 1634lbs failed at 840lbs only being able to lift the 840lbs 4' from the ground and no further, and it would not tilt or hold tilt if you tried to tilt is would loose ground and drop the load, during the change in testing they never came back to that failure, they just kept saying "its within spec" so stay clear, they are not up to par and Mahindra and Schows do not stand behind there product, they told me the tractor was "within spec" and "they would do nothing further for me". they however did offer to consign the tractor or buy it back at a loss of 10k less than what they sold it to me for 4 months ago. 30K for a yard ornament.Needless to say I am more than disappointed with the factory and dealer support, this is a lemon and they are sticking me with it, so buy what you know and your neighbors know works.I know I am not alone, I have spend some time posting on the social media sites as well and Mahindra USA keeps deleting them, I guess they don't want folks knowing the truth behind there product.
I'm looking at new tractors. Guess I'll probably stick with a kubota.
I have a 2638 which is pretty much the same as the 2538. Two questions: 1) where is the starter relay located and 2) does the starter relay control power to the glow plugs? Thanks.
There is a relay under the front of the hood by the battery that is associated with the starter. Not sure if it controls the glow plugs though. I had starting issues with mine and the issue is somewhere in the ECM wiring so I installed a direct wire from the battery to a momentary switch to the starter.
Is there a way to eliminate the EGR system and other emission stuff to increase power?
Yes and no. Yes the EGR system can be easily eliminated but it generally won’t increase HP.
Leave the EGR valve plugged in but you can install a block off plate on the EGR valve inlet and the exhaust manifold. I’ve been running like this for the last 200 hours and have zero check engine lights or issues.
You should never get under an FEL in the air unless you lock it in place. Get some angle iron or make some from wood and put them in so the rods cannot retract. If it comes down, it will hurt! Big time.
Otherwise, thanks for the video! Nice tractor.
thank you pro
No turbo?
Nope. Naturally aspirated.
Where is the oil fill?
Drivers side of the motor low and at the front you’ll see what looks like a cap with about a 1/2” breather pointing out of the side. Pull that cap off and that’s the filler.
At 3:30 you can see it. It has the light gray hose behind it.
Where is the oil fill cap?
Left side (where you get on the tractor). Lift the hood and remove the access panel. St the front of the motor you’ll see a round cap with a hose on one side and a breather nipple on the other. That’s the fill location.
@@LAConfederate
Thank you so much
@@LAConfederate for some reason my 2538 keeps blowing fuses for the PTO. As soon as I push the button does it have a safety switch somewhere or something I need to look for
@@AlPatriot534 if it’s popping fuses you have a short somewhere. You’ll need to look at all the wiring for the electric PTO and find where the wires are rubbed. There is a safety switch under the seat but mine has been disconnected for years
Mahindra made their engines pretty complicated I see. You say pretty simplistic. Not really, electronic injection pump, something goes bad with that computer your a sitting duck. To me mechanical is far better no electronics to mess with and durability no Matter what. I do however like the fact of no dpf but at what price? How much is an injector for that engine? I'll bet not cheap vs the mechanical injector. As far as I'm concerned epa should stay out of tractors, that's what is raising the costs so dang high.
While I wholeheartedly agree that mechanical is better and more simple, the simple fact is that those days are far gone and not likely to return. Compared to other tractor companies this tractor is relatively simple and easy to work on.
nothing compared to deere or kubota
@@LAConfederate unfortunately that is very true, so unless you want to buy used and run something already 10-15 years old with several thousand hours on it, you just have to pick your poison... All the new stuff is built with computerized everything and it's not going away. Pollution control crap is a HUGE expense to buy, maintain, and keep supplied (with DEF) and returns ZERO value to the operator; and shortens engine life while lowering power... But not much we can do about it. Mahindra at least does away with the damn DEF and having to buy that expensive shit all the time for NO value to the owner whatsoever...
Wish some company would come out with delete kits for all these tractors, like they do for the pickups... Most guys seen to delete all that pollution shit on their pickups as fast as possible, no reason it couldn't be deleted on tractors if a company would develop the kit I'm sure they'd sell a ton of them! Later! OL J R
