For some reason RUclips has started recommending me fence videos - I don't need a fence, but when I do - I will have hours of experience watching tutorials.

I love that you're doing these review videos of "good" things. It's so easy to focus on the negative stuff as I have seen in other similar review videos, so this is a nice reprieve. April has been doing some great stuff, and to see you give her props on her work is a double dose of awesomeness.

Joe, you are a breath of fresh air on RUclips--thanks for doing these positive reviews! It's very encouraging and motivating. It's good to see a pro making positive commentary on amateur DIYers, when they do a good job, instead of just the usual snark and cut-down of the Internet. You are a true professional and a real gentleman--willing to give credit where credit is due!

April is obviously not an 'amateur DIYer;' her skills are way above journeyman level. I am confused why anyone would feel a need to critique the quality of work of a person with a TV show, especially when he doesn't have one, and watching the first video of her fence building series proved her advanced skills. There were times I could see expressions on Joe's face that suggested, Wow, what a great idea; I'll have to start doing that! Too many of the comments are in regards to her appearance and dress , like they're 7th graders who can't keep focus on the subject matter because they can't control their hormones.
When are you going to do a video critiquing Tom Silva? I'm not comparing April's work to his, only because she doesn't have the decades of experience; still, she is VERY good at wood & metal working ~ especially for being self-taught & not growing up 'in the family business.' Obviously not many are willing to do what she has done in eight years, investing in education and equipment to build skills and confidence for a marketable trade.

Building a fence has come a long way and look better than when I was young. We had a small farm growing up and very limited resources ( everything we grew was for our use and money was tight) my dad had railroad ties given to him from a friend from the railroad ( my dad worked for them before working at Pullman standard) and barn wood that we tore down for others . The fence wasn't huge , just covered around an acre ( house and backyard) but after it was finished he was proud of it .

Hi Joe. This is the first video (well, all 3 of these response videos) I've seen on your channel. I've watched a LOT of April's videos. However, I haven't (and probably won't) watch the videos you just critiqued of hers (I'm not building a fence, so it's not something I need to research right now), but I did watch all 3 of your critique videos. I really liked listening to your feedback on her methods and materials. I'll definitely keep all this in mind for when I do need to build a fence. Great job!

I’ve been a Union Carpenter for 18 years (all commercial) and I hate working alone! It’s not smart nor safe. I heard this military saying ‘dig your foxhole for three’. So if there’s ever an emergency then one can render aid while the other goes for help. Or one can run supplies so the others can stay in position for install. If there’s ever a question, more heads to bounce ideas off of.
All in all I’m a fan of the 3 to 4 person crew.

Hi Joe - yeah April is a top notch woodworker and carpenter. I have a question. However, I want to give you the background info first, so please bear with me. I bought my house brand new in 2009 and had the fence added as part of the purchase contract. The contractor who put up the fence built the fence on the cheap, I didn’t have much say in this part, and the seller wasn’t willing to use steel posts. When it was all said and done I could tell the materials were the lowest grade that could be bought. The stringers were 12’ lengths, some were cut shorter, some of the posts were twisted and not evenly cut at the top (differing heights and not squared off). Three weeks after moving in the house, the fence contractor “dropped by” to ask if I wanted the fence stained, then he had the stones to ask if I wanted to upgrade the fence to a true cedar with a oil based stain for $3600 because it would last longer then the fence he just put up. I started pointing out the crappy materials he used and the sloppy workmanship. This guy blamed the seller not wanting to pay for a better quality material. Well this wasn’t my first rodeo, and I knew the property developer. So after I ran this yokel off, I figured I would eventually have to begin repairing or replacing the fence and I was right. I had to start replacing pickets and stringers because they were bowing outward enough to pull the nails through the pickets as well as at the end of the stringers where they were attached to the posts. Now 12 years later the sub-division is finished and my corner lot house needs to have the fence replaced. I am going to do the work myself, at least the fence line that isn’t shared by my side and back neighbor. I’m a retired soldier, with disabilities, but am still capable of doing some carpentry, although progress is slow. My plan is to begin replacing the fence in 8’ sections. I’m going with steel pipe and pulling the wood posts as I go. I what to replace the remaining 12’ stringers with 8’ sticks, eventually having all 8’ stringers. Additionally, my plan to replace the poles in the section I’m working on is to unfasten the fence from the posts, pull the posts and reset the steel pipes in Quik-Crete letting it setup over night and then demo the rest of the fence section and replace it with new fence material. I’m going to use steel framed gates. I live in Oklahoma, I know the job sounds like a lot of added steps and time, but keep in mind I’m doing this alone and I only have about 100’ total offense to replace that is not shared. I don’t want to hire a contractor, because frankly, I’m a fair hand at carpentry and own all the right tools and equipment needed. Besides I enjoy staying active and doing this kind of project. The shared fencing is a whole other animal to get into later. Now that you have heard my plan, what are your thoughts, and recommendations (other then “hire a contractor”) on my plan of attack here? Thanks, Duane.

I ended up have my kids (11 and 9 yr old that time) and I enjoyed building my fence. We had really strong winds where I'm at and every year I see my neighbors fence destroyed, so far mine is still standing strong.

couple aspects that you left out that I thought were nice touch is she used 2x6 for her runners and the steel post looks like they're three inch post which that's a very nice heavy-duty touch for the gate I would have had a round steel pipe frame made and then bolted the two-by-fours to that and then nailed the tickets to the wood frame

April is very talented and I am not just saying that!! I have followed her channel now for a while and she has been pretty knowledgeable on her videos, even the content that she has a "helper" come in and show her how to do new things! Unlike a lot of women (sadly) she understands what it takes to make the things she builds and at times she explains things so clearly that even a total novice can understand her reasons and logic!!! Too bad that more women don't have her skills in both communication and her knowledge of what she is building!! My ex wife once drew a rectangle on a piece of paper in other words, and told me "This is the deck I want you to build" and when I tried to explain to her that I needed to know things like "distances" and footer placement and height and materials...my ex wife THEN called me a jerk, told me I was "stupid" and got made that I didn't jump up and build her a rectangle apparently!! She wouldn't listen to me about what was "missing" from her stupid drawing, and just assumed I was "acting like an idiot" just to make her mad, because apparently my ex wife was "too stupid" to understand you can't take a hand drawn rectangle on a piece of paper and then have it approved by the zoning office like that!!! And like I say she had NO dimensions or sizes or "placements" of any kind on her "drawing" at all!!! Had I been "smarter" I would have built her a rectangle box out of wood to fit her drawing to scale (which would have been a model) and hand THAT to her to really drive home the "smart ass" aspect of it home!!!

what do you think April's version of this board on board fence in terms of its ability to withstand strong wind since there'd be no gaps at all to let air in and out?

April strikes me as a woodworker who happens to be building a fence. Not only is that a tablesaw with a dado stack it’s a Sawstop tablesaw with a dado stack, and she’s using right angle clamps for the frame. She also threw in the a casual reference to a band saw. That is some hardcore DIY’ing. 😂

In the UK we use precast concrete posts, sink them into the ground a postcrete them in place, then a gravel board slots between the posts (posts have slots all the way down)
Then the fence panel you buy premade and it slots in aswell

I wonder how popular April would be if she wasn't built like she is.

You know, it’s not lost on me that April is a beautiful woman, because she is. What keeps me coming back to her videos is her knowledge and that she is a great teacher. Looks only get you by so far.

Look, she's good at what she does but most DIY'ers aren't going to have the level of skills or the tools that April has in her arsenal. So to call this a DIY fence is a little unfair.

    Jesus Christ saves from sin.
    Romans 3: 23
    For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;
    Hebrews 9: 27
And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:
    Isaiah 64: 6
But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.
    Revelation 21: 8
But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.
    Romans 5: 8
But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
    John 3: 16
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
    John 14: 6
Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
    Romans 10: 9-10.
That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
    Jesus said John 5: 24
Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.
    1John 5: 10-13
He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself: he that believeth not God hath made him a liar; because he believeth not the record that God gave of his Son.
And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.
He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life.
These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.
    Ephesians 2: 8-9
For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
Not of works, lest any man should boast.
    Romans 8: 1
There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
    1 Corinthians 15: 3-4
    For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures;
And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:
    2 Corinthians 5: 21
For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.
