I decided to grow my hair out 3 years ago when I realized my hair had gone white, I had been getting various shades of ash blonde and light ash brown streaked through my roots every few months...by this last summer my hair was past my collar bones, except the fringe which was just past my chin. I went in for a cut, a blunt cut just at the top of the collar bones, which meant 3 inches off the back...my fringe/bangs may not be caught up but the first cut in 3 years took 10 years off my face (I'm 60) then I did a temporary color of Royal blue on half, that took even more years off, and with the mask we must wear I can pass for 30-35!!!!
Awkward stages are really hard for me. When I grow my hair long enough, I got thick hair, my head looks like a mushroom! Then I can't even look in the mirror how awful I look, so I go to the barber, cut my hair short and instantly regret what I did, and want my hair back so hard every single time!! I think I could past that awkward situation!

I totally agree with your point of using lighter products for longer or in general thicker hair. I never understood why so many people on youtube etc. recommend hair clays and matte pastes especially for thick hair. Even a quiff sometimes naturally has too much weight to it, so a dry clay might achieve the opposite effect by weighing the hair down. A good Styling cream with medium to high hold and natural shine should be fine :D
