Thanks!
Your continuing support of this channel continues to be much appreciated. More than anything, it tells me that I'm doing something that people value. Thanks!
Thank you for these weekly Perseverance reports, and for the people who process these glorious images.
Thanks for watching. And yes, Simeon's work is indeed glorious!
Great report Mars Guy.. Thanks
Thanks for watching.
One of, if not THE, greatest YT series of all time 😍🤩
High praise, thanks!
Wow, that white rock really stand out. I hope we do get a closer look.
Without a doubt, this is one of your very best videos because it showcases the deep perspective that you have equipped yourself with three years of work on publishing videos about the Rover mission. First, you give us perspective on why this drive was so different and risky and an important accomplishment in that it was, one of the longer drives through some of the more treacherous terrain. Second, you give us perspective on why the rocks that the rover is now parked next to are so unusual and may actually yield some extremely good information based on your knowledge of all the other rocks that the rover has been looking at. Third, you point out that this set of photos that NASA has released Are unusual because they are now blending together, seamlessly photos of different resolutions to give a much more valuable and detailed view where the details are selected to be the most important ones. We really want to see.
NASA should use this video of yours as an example of how they should reportstatus of their various missions. Too often, I think NA just reports the fax without providing perspective as to why they are either important or run of the mill, etc.
One small correction: NASA did not release the blended images. They were processed by Simeon Schmauss who is a student in Germany.
@@ericfielding2540
Thanks for your note! Certainly this guy in Germany deserves a lot of praise. I think what he has done is to make the photos that much much more easy to understand rather than having to switch between a photo at one resolution to a photo at another resolution of a smaller area, etc.
Thanks so much for this feedback. It's really encouraging to know that people appreciate not only my efforts, but those of Simeon as well.
@@MarsGuy honestly, the kind of reporting you do would be invaluable to NASA as it contextualizes the entire endeavour and the purpose behind it as well as why some of the things it is finding are important. The public often doesn’t pay attention because the information is presented in such a dry format (by NASA). I realize that most people don’t care about space exploration anyway, but for the ones that do, I suspect few are following Mars science because it’s not well presented (other than by yourself).
nice little Doors references in there this week :)
I got it too, and I was thinking the same thing! 😂😂 I was having an “old man yells at sky” moment and I’m only 45 😂
@@alifesh Yay for old people! It's finally good for something!! :)
Not to mention the Rolling Stones
That is cool,I didn't catch that 😊
Glad you picked up on and liked the musical reference. Just having fun.
Happy to see Perseverance is making it through tough terrain
Great news that Persi got through safely, and rewarded with some targets of interest. Thanks Mars Guy.
Yep, it's all better than expected!
Thank you so much for putting these videos together.
Happy to have such appreciative viewers!
Way to go Simeon! Beautiful work.
Thanks :)
I wouldn't know a quarter as much about how Perseverance is progressing on Mars if I didn't have these updates, thank you!
Happy to provide these updates to appreciative viewers!
I can't see the rover team rolling away from that white rock if there's any safe way to get up to it for closer study. That's just too tempting
4:48 That magnification on the left is insane when you see at what distance that pic was taken... That's impressive.
Also, there's a more pinkish rock on top of that hill in the background, at a different angle so it looks less white but seemingly has the same type of surface.
To the top left of the wider view, right? I also spotted it and to me it seems the same type of rock but probably smaller than the one in main view.
@@LuisAldamiz Ah, that one I missed, you noticed another white rock I missed.
The one I was talking about is on top of the hill, to the right of the largest rock up there. It's lacking all the white and instead is just pink. It quickly turns invisible on the larger shot, so quickly pause at 4:54. I initially thought it may have been the angle, but now I think it's the lack of weathering on it.
Ow! All the ones I can identify now with yours can perfectly be (especially after tinkering for highest quality images) just other dark blue (black?) rocks. :(
Mine is one visible at 4:56 to the left (not "top left", rather slightly below the horizontal, as there is a slope) of the most visible one, and it is apparently semi-hidden by other smaller blue stones, what actually make it turn more visible by contrast of color.
Looks like a flood event complete with erratics floated on ice down the raging river … like glacial floods in the Pacific Northwest
Very cool. Even with my limited knowledge of geology, I thought "granite" when I first saw the white rock on the hillside. But thanks to those amazing high resolution cameras Percy carries, it doesn't appear like the similarly sized rock in my yard when viewed close up. Thank you (and Simeon) for a great episode.
Thanks for watching and doing your own observational science!
Much appreciation to Simeon for his work!
Thanks, I'm always happy to hear that!
@@stim3onwell you may add one unit of happiness in that case. Great work. Thank you!
@@stim3onIt's really appreciated all over the world. That's an incredibly natural looking composite.
I'm his biggest fan!
References to Golf, Seinfeld (pinkish hue) and The Doors. Wow!
Ha, didn't know about the Seinfeld reference!
Break on through to the other side! Break on through Persy, Break on through!
Humm, why did I get a flash of Jim Morrison. 😉
Correct!
Another Mars Guy classic right here!!! 👌👌👌
Mars Guys truly never disappoints! :)
Thanks, glad you think so!
@@MarsGuy I mean, truly I enjoy every episode, but every once and awhile these episodes make my jaw drop. Very proud supporter of your ongoing work!
@@samiampowell Hi praise! Thanks.
Go Percy, go go go.
We want a close up.
It does appear reachable with careful route planning, in my layman opinion 😊
These are pictures of Mars!! Think of that! It’s still exciting.
Dang, get Percy up there and grab a sample for heaven's sake, although that would be tricky! Thanks for another great video, Mr Mars, Wow!
I'm hoping too, but the rock may be too small and/or inaccessible.
@@MarsGuy Yes, was thinking that too, hence the tricky part 🤔....grab it and stick it in your pocket, if only 😆It's got to be frustrating to see these new discoveries, so close but yet so far.....😠
Nice rock who could pass it by without a closer look and maybe a grind too...
I wonder if they plan to get a closer look at Ingenuity since they realized they can drive between the sand ripples. Thanks for the lovely video
Big ripples. Percy will be stranded with his belly buried in one of those peaks! But on the east side (slope) of the other hill he could get photos of the bird and perhaps more "white stones."
the rock is really interesting hope they follow up on it. your videos have really made this mission come back to life for me. keep up the good work
Thanks for the encouraging words.
1:16 Seeing how far away Perseverance is from Ingenuity really hits me in the feels lol
Nice Jim Morrison quote... love your reports.
Couldn't resist, and thanks.
4:27 I'm suddenly craving chocolate chip ice cream...
Way to go, Percy, you wonderful desert tortoise you!!! PLEASE don't get stuck! Thank you Mars guy! As always, You're the best!
Im gonna share my dumb here. I didn't catch the Doors references that the other commenters did. And I AM old. I did catch the golf reference tho. And I've never golfed! Does that count for anything?
Ha, I don't golf either! But I do like the Doors (see lyrics for Break on Through).
Fantastic video, maybe one of your very best! The key thing about this video is all of the perspective that you bring to it that is based on your long familiarity with this mission and what has been accomplished and what the rover has seen. I’m not sure that even NASA could do as good as job is what you’ve done here. Thank you very much!
One suggestion: you should put a brief cut from the doors song “break on through to the other side“! Seems like that would be the most appropriate kind of music here.
Thanks for your kind and encouraging words. The song was certainly in my head when I first saw the drive result and influenced my word and phrase choices, but I'm reluctant to actually introduce any music.
From the images, the salt and pepper rock looks like it has a lava like texture. Nice catch Percy.
I can certainly visualize Jim Morrison riding on Perserverance's back tailgate, both breaking on through to the other side.
That's quite a vision!
I've been cutting red sandstones and my saw is coated with a pinky layer after. It's incredibly thick and tough on the bottom of the water tray in less than an hour. I can see why rocks in river would end up with a skin like this - looks exactly like I've been cleaning up and I could see it would be incredibly persistent if dried.
That silicate rock is likely evidence of a magmatic intrusion without eruption like we find with porphyry deposits on earth. Makes sense we find some of these - silicates are extremely common. Amazing but not surprisingly how similar mars geology is to earth.
I repeat myself, I know, but it really feels like we were right up there! Thx as always for putting another interesting episode together.
Happy for your repetition! Glad you're enjoying these videos and feeling transported.
Just wait,...l they'll find a tin "Burma Shave" sign on one of those hills if they keep looking long enough. 🤔😆
Great to hear that Percy broke on through and found this very interesting white rock. I wonder if it came from those white rocks on the north shore of the former river.
We'll find out soon...
That rock sure stands out, it would be nice to have sample. It's so great that we can get to share in this through your fantastic YT channel. Thanks again Mars Guy.
Thanks! It's also great to have such appreciative viewers.
Fascinating! I've nver been so excited by a rock before!
Ha, glad to hear it!
Looks the same as the smaller light rocks littering the ground, just not buried.
Golf and The Doors all in one Mars video. Toss in a geology class and we got a party!
Ha, party down!
Fascinating!!! Thanks Mars Guy!
Great, thanks.
Really hoping they get closer for more detail on that white rock- that is super weird.
You can tell how excited he is, because he’s using his excited voice.😂. Love your channel. I learn so much here.
Ha ha! Glad you appreciate the content.
I always enjoy your posts. Not documentary length but enjoyable mini documentations. Well researched and enjoyable to relax to on a rainy Sunday morning.⛈
Thanks for the feedback and mental picture (enjoy the rain).
Amazing close-ups. Great commentary.
Thanks
The dark coating is actually the chocolate shell that is breaking off.
The road to wisdom often means remembering to not take a different route for granite.
Ooh, good one!
Great report as always and some exciting finds to come
Thanks, and yes!
Thanks Mars Guy, another interesting Sunday collection on what's happening on Mars!
Cheers 👍💪✌
Glad you're watching!
@@MarsGuy well, I most likely will be back every week as possible. What an interesting topic Mars is, remember the Heinlein books on Mars. So far no signs of life, not like in the sci-fi books. Thanks again.
Good morning MG this is so cool watching our rover traverse the Mars landscape. I thought granite, it’s great to be in the river channel. I still miss the little guy thank you
Glad you're enjoying following Perseverance. And yeah, missing Ingenuity too.
These videos really light my fire for knowledge
Ha, good one!
Great video. It seems that fortune favours the brave for Perseverance!
Indeed! And thanks.
Always one rock that say's i want to be different
Thanks Mate. i don't get it. They got a Stadium there. they should be a Parking lot near by..
and a pub
Ha ha!
This is great news! Thank you!
Thank God Mar's Guy was there to Give the Rover, Push it Needed, it was Getting monotonous watching the Crawl along, Hopefully we can get a sample, safely
Ha, if only!
Excellent as always, thank you.
Regarding the White-ish rock, we're now fairly certain that Mars once had flowing water... for whatever reason, this rock reminded me of mineral deposits seen in and around hydrothermal vents here on Earth.
Absent plate tectonics, but having abundant examples of past volcanism, might this notion be at least possible?
Hot spring deposits known as silica sinter have been identified on Mars by the Spirit rover. But they don't have the salt-and-pepper look.
Love the Doors references, and thanks for doing this. If you don’t yet have tenure, I’m sure it’s coming 😂 this is exactly what every kid wants who would eagerly watch any space related show on TV. This was, of course, before I had the sum of human knowledge in my pocket. Cheers!
Glad you picked up on the Doors references. It's fun to slip in lyrics here and there. And no tenure available in my research professor job, but thanks!
I don't recall any other areas with rounded rocks --- probably from tumbling along a river bottom --- do you, Mars Guy? The white rock is an extreme oddity. Hope Persey can take a sample.
Yeah, actually there are a lot of rounded cobbles and boulders on and in the delta fan, as I most recently noted in episode 162. But nothing like the white one.
I exclaimed 'granite' upon seeing the white rock's markings. Alas, not. Thank you, Mars Guy, for reminding me that one's hopes do indeed bias interpretation.
Ah, spoken like a good scientist!
Love the Doors reference.
Glad you do!
Awesome updates, Mars Guy! I'm soooooooo curious about the composition of that "felsic" looking rock 😂 Must've been some decent strength currents bringing those size rocks.
Thanks. And yes, so intriguing!
Thank You Mars Guy!
It is so good to see Perseverance on the other side of the sand.
Those stones are pretty nice! I wish I had one;)
Ha, me too!
It still amazes me to think that these images are of an alien planet. So dang cool!
Glad you're feeling it!
Odd looking rock out in the middle of nowhere.
Very exiting, also the purple rock to the upper right of the white rock looks interesting. There is also a small rock to the left. Imagine how easily humans could collect and study rock samples such place.
Yep, we just have to be happy with slow-mo exploration (which I am!).
Very interesting once again. Thanks, Mars Guy!
If that was a "slice" then we now know Perseverance is likely right handed.
Ha, yeah, I learned that on the Internet!
Wow, you can almost see the inscription on that white rock!
Great presentation. Thank you. I can’t think of where I would go to get this kind of detailed information!
Thanks. Just keep coming back for more!
Space is so underwhelming.
Thank you! Great job. Really I enjoy very, very much these eplanation!
Glad you do, thanks!
Next rover should have much larger tires, perhaps with long spikes to walk over boulders.
These "beer kegs" of Percy look good, although Curiosity is behaving like a champion, everything has a limit, there is always a bigger rock to want to climb on.
I am not a geologist - how can scientists tell if the rounding of the rocks is from water or millions of years of sand-blasting by dust storms?
Wind erosion (sandblasting) tends to produce streamlined rather than rounded shapes.
I hope we can analyze those samples!
BREAK on through to the other side.
Looks like some sort of granitoid.
Thar's gold in them thar hills!
I think that the lighter colored rock is remarkable too. Either way, might point to some long ago tectonics?
Too early to say...
Great report and congrats to Perseverance.
Thanks, and yes!
Absolutely love this would also love if he spoke about what curiosity is doing as well
Thanks. Regarding Curiosity, I've chosen to focus on Perseverance because the science more closely matches my own research.

I'm excited too!
Great video again and a wonderful processing of all the different images! The linkage between possible metamorphic rock and the missing plate tectonics on Mars was a little bit short. My first guess upon seeing the granite-like boulder was "impact metamorphism" from whatever created Jezero Crater. Maybe the "Bright Angel region" is made of the same material - that would be a great discovery. But perhaps we will learn a lot more about that when NASA hopefully examines the white one in more detail.
Yeah, it was too long a discussion to explain the relationship between granite and plate tectonics, so I chose to keep it short. Impact melt as an explanation would depend on the target rock composition. It will be really exciting if Bright Angel is the same stuff.
@@MarsGuy Hope, you can tell us next Sunday, why they drove away that fast from your "treasure Island". Maybe they will have a second visit on the way back and need some time to plan in detail how to retrieve the treasure! First pictures of Bright Angel look exciting too!
MG, let's all hope that Percy will check out that white stone, thats not like the others 😀
Yeah, I'm hoping, but it may be too small and/or inaccessible.
I love these videos. Thanks so much for the effort you put into them.
Thanks for watching.
Been waiting in anticipation for this episode. Now waiting for the next one.
I guess it's working then!
Love your updates. Thanks for sharing!
Glad you do, thanks!
You sound very excited 😂
After it chased pleasures here, time to dig treasures there. Good rover!
Correct!
Those pink horizontal streaks are very peculiar.
OK. Moses climbed the mountain also to find such rocks splitting into to equal parts, with inscriptions from GOD. 10 Commandments to offer to his newly freed Tribe who may not have the traditional values offered by GOD. Plymouth Rock in Massachusetts was also a rock that split into two equal parts for the Pilgrims to walk over.
Good video, thanks
"maybe that's a slice"...golf analogy? Nice work, as always
Correct, and thanks!
at 4:26, did you notice the bluish "eyeball-shaped" rock slightly to the left of the upper-mid center focus…?! cobalt? remnants of iron-nickel meteorites such as were discovered back in 2009? something else?
4:36 Nope. It don't, but i know that stuff. I just can't tell you the name. There are rocks, that have these exact round'ish inclusions. Ede: Rhyolith.
wow!!!!! this is so exciting!!!!!!! thank you so much!!!!
Thanks, glad you're excited!!
WOW! A rock was discovered on Mars! Send out the reporters for the news! This should appear on every title online!
Sanjosemike (no longer in CA)
There are black rocks in Arizona and in Utah. The normal explanation is the moisture migration of manganese from inner, to the outer surface. The black rock faces in Utah are a very red sandstone, Navajo red sandstone, the rocks in Arizona I refer to are associated with ancient volcanic activity and the inside of the black rocks is a very uniform creamy tan colour..
Your white rock could be the same composition as all the black rocks,, the white rock being of more recent formation, the black rocks have not cleaved a new face in 10 million years. Drill a hole. Analyze the dust
The white rock with the purplish mix could be manganese? Also the rock's white and color mix looks homogeneous?
