This is the first video I've watched that the gasket wasn't cut in two!!!!! I cut mine and everyone else did to that I watched and now I understand why my pool leaked and I had to silicone caulk around it. I'll have to find another gasket if possible and do it right if the caulk isn't 100%. So happy to see this done the right way! Thank you:)
I have a bestway 8 x 48 filling up as we speak. I also have the hayward skimmer sitting next to me. It seems most people cut the gasket because the liner on these pools has a tendency to stretch after it's cut if nothing is holding it together. Hence why everyone else says cut it, attach the skimmer then cut the liner. I'm still debating how I want to do mine.
We have this exact pool and my husband has complained the last 3 years about the inlet holes being in their current location and that the pool is not made for a skimmer. Really makes no sense that they make them this way but here we are. Today I got tired of hearing it and thought, maybe there is a way we can make it with a skimmer. Good ole RUclips never fails. Thanks so much for this video!! Have the skimmer ordered and can't wait to get it installed! Can't wait to see a smile on his face once it is up and running ;)
That little flap door inside the skimmer is called a weir and it should be on the inside of the skimmer cuz when the pump is on, that weir is pulled inside, but when you turn the pump off, that weir will lift up and will float and almost close the skimmer opening so that the debris inside the basket don’t go out back to the pool. It kind a closes the opening and keeps debris inside when there’s no suction that pulls it in the basket.
This is the best pool hack. I bought this and just installed it today. Works like a charm! The water flow is so much better, and suction is awesome. This video was easy to follow with great mod tips.
Definitely on planning to do this on mine, just ordered it and can’t wait to install, the skimmer is definitely a must have especially on our 18’ pool, it doesn’t come with a skimmer at all, smh
Yeah I like some of the terminology that some pool owners use, but hey they aren't in the business...like "sand filter pump" Another note, if the water gets low, you arent going to ruin your filter. Its the motor on the pump that you would mess up.
I did this today. One thing I did was also mark the screw holes. I then pre drilled the holes and then cut the hole. After that I put the gasket on and screwed everything down with my drill set to 10 lbs. So far everything seems good!
This was really helpful, Thanks man! I wanted to mention for anyone looking to add one of these Hayward units to your more oval shaped above ground pool. If you install it on the side near the pump you will see that the wall is not vertical like these round pools. This will be a problem you'll discover too late. I had to re-order a few parts, to repair the hole, and a longer hose to re-install it around to the end where it is rounded and vertical. Fixed.
I just installed a Hayward skimmer on a 12x24 Bestway pool. I installed it on the pump side. What problems did you have? I have not seen any issues yet. Granted the skimmer is not perfectly vertical but it still skims great.
Dude, thanks for your videos. About to put in my first pool a 16x32 intex. I wish I could have bought it without a pump and just buy a full hayward pump but for now will have to rely on the pump provided until we can afford to switch. I loved your content and you showing failures is the best thing for real people cause I am a mechanical idiot and will be screwing shit up non stop lol.
The intex sand pumps aren't that bad. Make sure you put the correct pool filter sand in, it's a little more expensive but definitely worth it for the flow. I've had 2 pools the last 10yrs and im also getting the 32 by 16 tomorrow. I'm pumped but not looking forward to leveling the ground first lol that's a pain
@@Barrskie101 Mine is up I am about to put together the Sand Filter Pump and realize they did not send me the Salt water pump. We looked over the reciept and looks as if wwe got straight chlorine :( another 350 tomarrow lol. I am about 2/3 full and still a bit worried I did not place my blocks low enough but everything was pretty dead on level wise so fingers crossed first install! I might just skip right into the hayward filter also.
I think the Door acts as a Check valve keeping debris from floating back out, even with a strong suction stuff might work its way out. Just my 2 cents. 😁 Also like the fact you kept the gasket in one piece, I've seen a few guy's cut it into 2 pieces which I believe defeats the sealing capabilities of the gasket. GJ, Thanks for sharing.
My gasket didn't quite fit so I had to shave off a little more of the pool side to get it in. The holes didnt quite line up but I made it work, and it leaks just a little but i'm happy with the product.
If you are curious the extra holes in the gasket that weren't used are because this skimmer also comes in a wide mouth version which is basically an attachment that will attach to the front of this skimmer. So the two pieces Lego together.
Your video convinced me to get this skimmer. I was about to purchase the intex on that you upgraded from. My question is what did you use to block the water from the 2 holes that used to feed the water to the pump? My pool only came with 1 slow stopper for when I’m using the vacuum. Doesn’t 100% stop the water.
If you don't have the black stopper plugs you can just use a piece of saran wrap doubled and a rubber band to put over the intake and discharge on the inside of the pool. That's all I ever use, Works perfectly. Also, your sand filter should have a closed position so only the water in the hose will drain out and not the water from inside the sand filter.@@CrushedEMTB
Hey, love the video, I think it may be just what we need also. What size and type of pump is that with the extra filter. We currently have a sand pump??
We have this same pool and it stays a bit murky, never used the skimmer though 🤷🏻♂️ fiancé just ordered this skimmer it’ll be here Saturday and we’re gonna install it then!
You can also use this skimmer to make an overflow hose. You can drill a hole in the skimmer outside the pool and set it above the water level. When it rains, you can have it overflow to the street or somewhere safe.
Hi! Can i have some update on how the wall skimmer works since to you installed it? How long is it installed and is there any leak are damages on the liner with time? Is it worth it or should i keep the intex surface skimmer? Thanks a lot 🙏 Fab
Are you planning on adding PVC piping to this pool as well? Or did it cause problems with your other pool? Trying to decide whether to replace my hoses with PVC.
You have the perfect set up for the Intex automatic pool cleaner. I have one and it works incredibly well. It is driven by the discharge side of the pump instead of the suction side. All the debris it picks up is stored in the vacuum instead of your filter. The price is up on them now. About $100 but it is money well spent. The pool just sits out there and takes care of itself. The skimmer works while the vacuum runs so it cleans from the top and bottom at the same time.
Thanks for the video. What length hose did you end up using to connect the new skimmer to the pump? We need one around 95 inches and just seems so long and I’m having a hard time finding one in that length.
Just double check so you shut off the 2 ports that had the original janky plastic line to the filter and now just have one line from the Hayward? I ask cause I've seen people do a pipe system (like your last setup) WITH the hayward and was trying to figure out if its really needed.
These are easy to install, one mat will increase temperature a couple degrees. I believe it would take 6 or more to really make a difference. They are made well
So you plugged up to the two inlet holes and got rid of the y connector and just hooked the skimmer hose to that side instead ? And when you are going to vacuum the pool what do you do??--because normally you plug inlet b and hook vacuum to the other inlet to get good suction.....but since you can't plug the skimmer how do you ensure good suction??
Great video, thanks. Could You inform me, where to get that 90-degree adapter at the return plug (hole A) of the pool? The lockable one. Could You tell the name of that adapter? Thanks.
I have the same pool n I def wouldn’t just cut a hole in the new liner , pools made for this skimmer have a reinforced cut out with 2-3 layers of liner where the skimmer mounts
Thank you for all the information!! Ordering the skimmer!!! We got a sand filter when we got the pool….knew the cartridge filter was junk. Tried the in pool skimmer and wasted that money. So do you use a regular vacuum like hose and brush just basic stuff or something more elaborate?? I seen the robotic video you posted that looked awesome!! Thanks again for all the info!!!
So, did you buy any extra fittings? I see you said you had an extra o ring.. do we need that? (I assume so). Did you use use the tubing from the pump for everything? Or did you get extra tubing? Also, you said it came with a new outflow piece? I do not have good circulation in my pool so I definitely need a better inflow
So you are saying to close off the two suction outlets and use the skimmer exclusively? I can see there is a massive amount of suction in the skimmer but is the turnover rate the same? Or better? Thank you for your awesome videos.
I just purchased a intex 3000gph sand filter pump and I was wondering why does my pump where the bleeder valve is have a lot of bubble action going on and most videos with these pump are calm.
Bleed out the valve until it's gone, and it should be fine. Should be no reason to get excess air unless your water level is too low and the inlets re sucking in air.
Can I ask how you closed off the bottom inlet hole from the original hole the water was sucking out at? Setting ours up next week and wondered if there is a cap to buy to screw on and close it off.
@@CrushedEMTBI put little plugs in but they are dripping water slowly. How are yours holding up? This was such an amazing video for this first time pool owner. Thanks!
Did this one work better then the waterfall one you did or the same because I believe if there was a leak or wasn’t tight it enough you wouldn’t get as much as suction as u should
Won’t this weaken your liner n make it prone to tearing where u cut it?? Pools that are made for a skimmer like this have a double or triple layer around where the skimmer goes?
One way around it is to buy big square or rectangle repair patches then glue to spot you want to install few days in advance so that it cures. That way in the spot where it screws will be 2-3 layers thick. Then install the skinmer
At first I thought is this guy an idiot? LOL! Then I realized I am the idiot. I learned so much more from this video than all the others because of all the mistakes he made and then corrected. I probably would have made the same mistakes. I haven't looked at all the comments, but if not addressed, the door is to keep debris from floating back into the pool once it is in the skimmer.
Is that the 2100 gph pump/filter system? I just finished installing mine but it doesn’t seem to have as much flow as I thought it would. I think the two smaller lines are restricting the flow to the pump. When the pump comes on it actually pulls the front down and the back where the timer is up out of its cradle. Like a skid steer picking up to much weight lol
Can you do the waterfall with this skimmer filter system? I have this pool and want to do this skimmer but ineed a waterfall or something to help with temp. Our pool currently sits at around 90° which is not enjoyable.
ah man, you gotta put the waterfall back on, I made one last year after watching your video, thanks for the idea. I have been wanting to do this skimmer but man I'm concerned about cutting that big a hole in the side of the liner but I may just go for it....
Did you have any issues installing over the spot where the brown liner meets the white? I saw another video they said it had to be installed on the white and I was thinking about doing one of these but didn't want to have to keep the water level so low.
What happened to the pvc set up from before. Setting up an intex pool later this week and was planning on plumbing everything with pvc cause I don’t trust those hoses
I'm only gonna add the PVC set up if I choose to do the waterfall again. But other than that it's pretty useless in comparison to the effectiveness of Just the skimmer itself
In case no one else has said anything, that flapper is there to stop backflow of junk if/when the pump is turned off. Makes sure all the bugs and other crap stay in the catch.
Also should water cover whole skimmer? Or is the way you have it partially below the water line the way it's supposed to be? because I have the other skimmer basket you showed and I hate it 😂
You've probably figured this out already, but the main purpose of the door is not to keep stuff trapped in the skimmer, as the water does that on it's own. The purpose is to adjust (using the foam) to the water level so that there is always a strong flow of water over the top of the door, to the point that debris is easily pulled in. Without it, if your pool water level is near the top of the skimmer, it will be very ineffective at skimming.
Anyone ever installed one of these on the Bestway Power Steel type pools? As the sides bulge instead of being vertical as I'd like to install a skimmer on it.
i think your pool and/or pump/filter may have been missing pieces, because i have basically the same pool (this style of above ground pool is all made by one company, they just shove a different logo on it for the "different" brands) and those "b" hoses absolutely DO come with a hose clamp
the door or flapper is ment to allow stuff to suck into the skimmer but not let stuff float back out into the pool anything trying to go out will hit the end of the door or go under it trapping everything in the skimmer
I hate that intex clamp on skimmer because I believe its the reason why my pump got so loud. The main reason I believe it did is because there would be insane amounts of debri still getting pass through the skimmer by going in between the basket and the blue floating thing which most likely made my pump very strained over time. I now need to cover my pump with a weighted blanket I had laying around and only have it on during the day. It got so bad that when I forgot to turn off the pump one time around 10:30pm (I usually do around 7pm) the neighbors called the cops for a noise complaint. I don't blame them, but its pretty damn embarassing. This was a sign to order another pump for my intex sand filter, and to get a real deal thru wall skimmer lol.
The door is for trapping debris from going back in the pool with heavy waves or the pump off. I enlarged in of the inlet holes for the in intex scimmer to sand filter then used the other hole for the cheap pump that came with it...runs a fountain.

Yes, it's a lot better flow. Because it works so much better, I see no need to go back to the other setup.
Won’t this weaken your liner n make it prone to tearing where u cut it?? Pools that are made for a skimmer like this have a double or triple layer around where the skimmer goes?
Well if that’s the case, it’s too late to back out now. I’m committed!
I was going to put one on my pool, but the pool store said not to. Said the weight of the skimmer with water in it will eventually tear the liner.
I've always used skimmer and never had liner rip
One way around it is to buy big square or rectangle repair patches then glue to spot you want to install few days in advance so that it cures. That way in the spot where it screws will be 2-3 layers thick. Then install the skinmer
What pool pump is that do u know where i can get it?
Intex. I have a pool pump video coming out here pretty soon.
I lost the screws to mine (ordered it last summer and it’s still in the box) do you happen to know specifically what screws I’d need to replace them!?
I don't, but I would just go to the hardware store and size it up till you fi d something that fits.
How are you hooking up your vacuum now?
There's a vacuum attachment that came with the skimmer. It fits inside the skimmer
When you turn pump off the door raises up to keep bugs and trash from returning to pool
At first I thought is this guy an idiot? LOL! Then I realized I am the idiot. I learned so much more from this video than all the others because of all the mistakes he made and then corrected. I probably would have made the same mistakes. I haven't looked at all the comments, but if not addressed, the door is to keep debris from floating back into the pool once it is in the skimmer.
you know where I can buy a filter like that and the skimmer
the parts should be in the description.
How did you stop up holes from leaking after you out the skimmer
They shouldn’t leak at all with the gasket in place right
Is that the 2100 gph pump/filter system? I just finished installing mine but it doesn’t seem to have as much flow as I thought it would. I think the two smaller lines are restricting the flow to the pump. When the pump comes on it actually pulls the front down and the back where the timer is up out of its cradle. Like a skid steer picking up to much weight lol
Yes, or 2400 - one of the two. Link is in the description and comments
What size pump do you have? It seems strong pump
what did you use to cover the 2 inlets. The one under the skimmer and the one to the left of the skimmer
They were the stock inlet plugs that came with a pool
How do you keep your water so clear?
Lots of chlorine
Can you please tell me what happened to the water fall ? I was planning to do that this week. Good idea or bad ?
It's fine. We might install it layer on. Just needed thus now.
Id like to see the vacuum process with thjs.
Can you do the waterfall with this skimmer filter system? I have this pool and want to do this skimmer but ineed a waterfall or something to help with temp. Our pool currently sits at around 90° which is not enjoyable.
Yes, but just chose not to this time around.
Super necessary 😆 South FL?
by any chance do you have a link for the inlet stoppers?
No but they should’ve came stock with the pool.
ah man, you gotta put the waterfall back on, I made one last year after watching your video, thanks for the idea. I have been wanting to do this skimmer but man I'm concerned about cutting that big a hole in the side of the liner but I may just go for it....
Gotta give the audience something new!
Did you have any issues installing over the spot where the brown liner meets the white? I saw another video they said it had to be installed on the white and I was thinking about doing one of these but didn't want to have to keep the water level so low.
I have not had any issues
What size filter did you go with for this pool we have the same pool and I wanted to upgrade from the junk it came with.
Don't remember. I think it was a 1hp
What pump are you using?
What size pool is that. Its huge.
Do you have the second b port blocked off?
Yes. Both ports
Everyone seems to cut the gasket, bolt it in place and then cut the liner after?
I just used the face plate to trace the lines.
Our skimmer lid keeps twisting itself and popping off when the water gets rough (kids jumping in)
But if we take the lid off, too much water comes out
So you don’t need the pool vacuum?
What size pool is this?
20ft
Also should water cover whole skimmer? Or is the way you have it partially below the water line the way it's supposed to be? because I have the other skimmer basket you showed and I hate it 😂
75%
What part number is the jet that your using
I’m not sure but it came with the kit
You've probably figured this out already, but the main purpose of the door is not to keep stuff trapped in the skimmer, as the water does that on it's own. The purpose is to adjust (using the foam) to the water level so that there is always a strong flow of water over the top of the door, to the point that debris is easily pulled in. Without it, if your pool water level is near the top of the skimmer, it will be very ineffective at skimming.
this pump is silence?
You can also get a pentair above ground pool chlorinator so you don’t need floating chlorine deal.
I'll look into it.
Anyone ever installed one of these on the Bestway Power Steel type pools? As the sides bulge instead of being vertical as I'd like to install a skimmer on it.
I'm doing it in a few days
I’m doing it today. I might make a video. I’ll let you know if all heck breaks loose!
Got it installed and all went smooth. Few more hours for it to fill up and we shall see.
Installed and working great. We put it in the corner of the pool where the vinyl wall is more flat.
@@thegridirongirl is your pool rectangle? Mine is round and still worked out well.
i think your pool and/or pump/filter may have been missing pieces, because i have basically the same pool (this style of above ground pool is all made by one company, they just shove a different logo on it for the "different" brands) and those "b" hoses absolutely DO come with a hose clamp
Yes, this pool did have missing parts when I got it, but I made it work.
What pump system did you purchase? I need to get one as well, I just got the skimmer ordered. Thanks and good job.
Intex
Link is in the description area and comments section
the door or flapper is ment to allow stuff to suck into the skimmer but not let stuff float back out into the pool anything trying to go out will hit the end of the door or go under it trapping everything in the skimmer
Thanks!
You must have been missing the clamps for the hoses. My pool came with the B-Fitting Clamps that go around and screw in.
This new pool was missing a few things. I had to borrow things for my old pool to make it work.
@@CrushedEMTB yeah. QC isn’t great on these things. Mine didn’t even come with any instructions. For a first timer, I would have been lost without YT
Any leaks yet?
What size is your pool?
20ft
The door is for trapping debris from going back in the pool with heavy waves or the pump off.
I enlarged in of the inlet holes for the in intex scimmer to sand filter then used the other hole for the cheap pump that came with it...runs a fountain.
Onde compro essa piscina?
I can NOT get the screws to line up with the holes on the unit. Driving us crazy!!
The door is for when you shut the pump off anything in the skimmer doesnt float back out
Sink stopper
FYI, the door acts as an accelerator for the water, causing material to be pulled in faster and trapped.
My door flew off in a storm. Pretty pissed about it. It doesn't work as good now, lol.
This was a comedy show lol so much fails lol happy you got it working
Yes, lot of fails. Honesty with the audience!
Hi. What did you do to plug off the stock suction holes in the side wall of the pool? I had a problem over winter that the stock plugs came out
I just filled it up with the stock plugs. I never had an issue.
@@CrushedEMTB thank you
