    You can just use toggle and it will turn it on and off from one NFC Tag, but if you have to have a condition, then you can make two states and still use one tag.

    • @mostlychris
      @mostlychris  4 года назад

      A bit confused.. Are you asking if you can make two states using one tag? If so, example of use case?

      @@mostlychris no, no question mark at the end of my statement. This is how it is done currently.

      Excellent. How do you use it?

    • @topagigio
      @topagigio 4 года назад +2

      @@mostlychris when you set the action for the light or switch on the tag, you will select "toggle". If you need to set an on percent of brightness, then you won't use toggle. But you can still use one tag with two separate automations. First automation would see if light was off, before turning on, and check if light is on at the same percentage before the light is set to new state. For the second, you would check if it was on before it would turn it off.

    • @mostlychris
      @mostlychris  4 года назад

      Ahh ok. So you are applying some conditions and then cascading. That makes sense.

    I want the kids to open the garage with a nfc tag.
    My kids have the companion app on their phone so there is no problem I can include their phones in the automation but for extra safety I would like a pincode for each member. Any idea how to execute this??

    This is awesome! Definitely going to do it. I just have one question, would it be possible to scan this if you aren't at home for example if I scanned one when I got in my car? Is there a way to do this? Thanks

    • @mostlychris
      @mostlychris  3 года назад

      At the end of the video, I show using it in my truck. I do this quite often as a matte rof fact. As long as your phone app can reach your Home Assistant you can put the tag anywhere--example, have a tag at a location for when someone arrives. A kid or significant other making it to work or wherever.

  • @jorgeferreira2009

    Thanks for the explanation. Is it possible to trigger the automation only when a certain phone scanns it? Not all phones but only yours for example

    • @mostlychris
      @mostlychris  4 года назад +2

      Yes I believe so. Just specify the device in the configuration file that is allowed to act on a scanned tag. The device_id setting is probably what you want.

    I have the tag set to toggle my garage door control. However, in the video, you don't have to open home assistant for your automation to run. When I hover over my tag, it says 'Open in home assistant." So I open home assistant, and then the automation runs. Is it because I have different tags as you, or did I do something wrong in the automation or tag programming? Also, just to make certain - If I place this tag on the exterior of my home, only a phone running my personal home assistant will be able to open the garage door correct? Thanks!

    • @mostlychris
      @mostlychris  3 года назад

      For the first part of your question, what phone are you running? Do you have something else that reads tags? I wonder if it doesn't think HA is the default reader for tags. You are correct in that all I have to do is unlock the phone and away it goes. Did you provision that tag in the HA app on the phone initially?
      For the second question, the automation is tied to your HA instance and user. Someone could conceivably scan that tag, but it wouldn't trigger your automation because it isn't linked to your HA instance and your user. DISCLAIMER: Make sure you test and accept your security posture that you are comfortable with. Try another phone and see what happens.

      @@mostlychris Using an iPhone 12. I set it up on the same iphone and I never used a NFC tag before. When the tag is read, a banner come up from home assistant and when you click on that banner, home assistant opens and the automation runs. It works, just have to do that extra step.

    Hi Chris, this looks really impressive. I've just started getting into Home Assistant this week and I've found your videos really helpful. With these tags does the phone that is scanning the NFC tag have to have the Home Assistant App installed or can it be any phone, so if someone was to come and stay I could put an NFC tag near the door and they could scan it to turn on the lights etc. Probably a weird example but it's an instance where they're very unlikely to have HA on their phone.

    • @mostlychris
      @mostlychris  3 года назад +1

      You have to tie that NFC tag to something that will action it. In this case, the HA app on the phone. It might be possible to find an NFC reader for the phone and configure it for a webhook action to HA but you would still need the owner of the phone to install something. You might be better off doing some sort of presence detection using WiFi or BLE for having an action occur when a guest arrives.

    • @mostlychris
      @mostlychris  4 года назад

      Thanks! I used the home feed card. You can find it if you install HACS (see my getting started series for that) and then once HACS is installed, add the home feed card and what entities you want to display in that card.

    • @mostlychris
      @mostlychris  4 года назад

      Interesting. Not sure in regards to unraid. You can always do manual install of custom components but then you need to manage them each by themselves. HACS just gives a nice interface to manage the myriad of custom components out there.
