  • I get this question so often in my inbox I decided to go ahead and address it in a video. Am I too old to switch over to fashion from the career track I was on before? Am I too old to start fashion school? Will people make fun of me or look down on me for being an older fashion school grad or intern?

Zoe Hong I m 20 yo boy from India and I pursued bachelor of arts in political science . my parents wanted me to go into Indian Administrative Services, I tried to take classes for it but I knew that I don't want that I wanted to go into designing only. Somehow I hav convinced them to allow me to pursue design . I am currently preparing for entrance of design colleges in India. Thanx a lot for encouraging ma'am :)

Hi Zoe! I'm 42 and started my Fashion Design college on July this year! I'm the oldest at my class, and I don't care!LOL I'm learning a lot more than when I was at college during my 17... Thinking about my own business and learning not only with teachers but with my classmates too! Love to be around them! Thank you so much for all your videos! You were one of the people that inspired me to choose this career ! And it's been wonderful!!!

THANK YOU MS ZOE!!! I'm 57; I got accepted to FIDM like a gajillion years ago and the (then) wife said I couldn't go, we couldn't afford it... then the next spring guess who was back in school for the FOURTH time?! Then she BAILED ("I don't need you anymore", she literally said that) 10 mos. from getting her degree (in Psych, go figure), and suddenly I'm a single dad so now I really can't afford it. But here I am with a portfolio full of 30+ years of work, I found your videos, and I'm actually taking steps to get my stuff online!!! Still gotta' figure out how to Market said portfolio to the right audience, but I'm confident now that I'll get THERE too! Thank you!!!

Hey, you're not alone. I am 56 female and went to FIDM straight out of high school. Before I turned 18yr old my portfolio was chosen to go to Paris. I didn't go because I didn't think I was good enough (I was not confident) and listened to the wrong people saying fashion was not a stable career. I went to a "traditional school" 7 yrs later majored in Sociology and then taught for 10 yrs BORING!!! I have gone back several times and had several different careers and look what video I'm watching. I know the response is years later and I hope your following your dream!!!

I went to an art school for Fashion Design when I was 38. Unfortunately didn't even get to finish my first year due to lack of finances. (It was during the Recession. Then I worked in a high end Bridal Boutique and fell in love with Bridal gowns and the business. So much inspiration there. Then later I took a break from bridal for a while for personal reasons. Just this year I started a new job in Bridal and I feel like it's now or never with me. I'm 49 and working on my first Bridal Gown collection. It's scary, but also so beautifully fulfilling. I don't think you are ever too old to start a new Dream and make it your own, no matter what happens in the end. At least you went for it.

Going back after having babies at the age of 39 ! Soooo excited and I feel like I can handle it better now at an older age. I’m so much more interested in the technical aspects instead of being obsessed with the job I’ll get afterwards and I honestly would be thrilled to get a job at any level at any company. Unlike in my 20’s when I started I have zero ambition to become some rockstar fashion star now. I would be over the moon to get a job designing kids wear at Kmart - as an example!

Love it! I went to school for fashion design/illustration, but right after graduation, my father passed away from cancer. You could say that sent me into a tailspin and life took me far away from that path. I’m now 45 and ready to hit it once more. I’m starting over and relearning everything. I serviced my sewing machine, dusted off my old books and I’m ready to roll! I can’t afford school at this time, but I’ll see what happens down the line.

I think it's never too late to start. It doesn't mean that there isn't a harder slog for any career if you're doing it later in life, just because old habits can be hard to break and there's definitely a real prejudice about older people in "younger" professions, but anything we want to do that's worthwhile will have some uphill battles.

I really worked hard for that and it was one of well made collections. but my supervisor (who is 4 years younger than me) don't believe in starting late and always insulting me. everybody said my collection was great except her. she looked it like it was crap. she gave me low mark for my project and it was very hurtful because after working hard on that and be treated like that. luckily other lectures didn't think like that theyre marks were not so bad. but she is in charge of other things like job opportunities and opportunities like showing at fashion week and she deleberately left me out of all those. and the ugliest thing is she did my research for her Masters and blamed me for copying her. she really made me doubt my career in fashion and feels like I'm not worthy for fashion. I'm in really low point right now. you're words did uplifted me little bit to know that I'm not alone.

Does she have a superior who you can go to to complain? It sounds awful

    • @shmwmlam3953
      @shmwmlam3953 6 лет назад

Sunny yeah it is horrible. I cried o many days for this injustice. but the thing is I'm worried if I do that she will take revenge on me more. since the senior lecturer is on leave these days she is the one who is acting on her behalf. other lectures are all new and cannot go over her. i can complain to dean or head of the department but there not fashion related so they don't know how to evaluate creativity based works and she can always come up with something and they will have to believe her because they don't know the process.

Believe me. This happens everywhere. If you are so telented, there are always ppl either really like you work or jealous and hate you work. What I have been telling myself is that dont take it personal and knowing that you are talented and can do so much better that them. If she is so telented and confident, she wouldn't be here teaching and treating you unfairly. So be confident and happy because you will do great in this career.:)

Well thanks for this video. To sum it up I’ve been a cosmetologist for 21 years and I decided to go back to school. I graduated at 40 (May17)! So deciding which path to follow is where I am now. I work retail part time until my children graduate in ‘19. Then I can really pursue and relocate because I’m in a super small town! I’m encouraged!

I love how you make things look so easy. I was struggling all my life to get out of my comfort zone and follow my dream career. Last year I’ve applied for AMFI (Amsterdam Fashion Institute) at Fashion Management and was accepted. I never thought or imagined the institute will consider my application with 1200 applicants and 450 available seats. And yet I scored well enough to enter the school. But it happened and as of September I’ll be a student working on my 3rd degree. I am 38 btw, and life is making sense again ;).
And I love your videos and how natural you are at passing on your knowledge. Please, keep doing a great job! You are helping so many people.

I was always passionate about cloth/fashion as long as I remember.. I learn to hand sew my doll clothes since first grade. Due to people told me fashion being "not a real job" back in 2010s... i decided to take "normal" major in Uni. I was miserable studying Marketing/Management. I work various jobs and for some reason end up in Animation. But Im a cosplayer and keep making my own costume.. learning so much about cloth/techniques. I'm now almost 30 and finally start my own costume design business. And yes with networking/connection. Im able to get projects for TV commercials, outfit public events and costume for gaming events... its never too late. 🥰

Definitely older people treat their school project differently too those in their 18s. They take everything so serious and willing to spend a lot of money and effort and they also stress out more in my point of view. Lol Its a competitive industry and the older they are the more stressed they are. This is what happenend in my school.

I am 27 Yrs. Old. I am a mom of a 4 yr old daughter, almost 5. I am currently in school for fashion design, going half time..
I'm so glad i watched this video. I am a little over 25% done with my degree, which I've been consistently working on since 2014. My daughter starts school soon, and we will be entering her into different extracurricular activities as well. I will also be taking a position at my significant other's dry cleaners as a seamstress. So, will be needing to take a break from school. I was so nervous, because in the fashion industry everyone is so young. I have about 1 more semester to go, and then will be on a break for a year or two. By the time I make it back to school, I will be reaching 30, if not already there. I was starting to feel doubt. Like, Am i wasting my time? Will I be too old to be in the fashion industry? Will people take me seriously since I am starting so late?
your video has eased my mind, and made me say F it! I'm going to stick with the plan, and proudly make my mark in my 30's no shame in my momma game! Life happens. And I think if I were to give up just because I thought I was not young enough for the industry, then I would have lived in a state of what-if?

This is so inspiring and heartwarming Zoe! It's basically like "the story of my life". To summarize: I have always wanted to become a fashion design and I so so badly wanted to go to art school after elementary school, because I knew from there I could get the training necessary to prepare for fashion design university. My parents opposed and said I am supposed to become some kind of manager of something, a proper "intellectual" career, and not a "pff, seamstress". (Btw for my dad Dior, Chanel and a seamstress were the same thing, not meaning to offend the profession of seamstress of course). Then life went on and although I would have spent all my free time making dolls clothes (I like to sew and drape more than I like to draw), I had to go into business academy for college. I chose marketing because it was the most creative think I could do in that university. Then a master's degree in Advertising and PR and then a PhD in Communication (because other than sewing and designing I like to talk much lol). All this while working in marketing full time. Then I ended up living in Milan because I had met my husband who is Milanese, I came here with a scholarship from the EU for the last 8 months of my PhD, and then after finishing Phd I searched in vain for a marketing job in Milan for 6 months. In the meantime I had opened an Etsy shop with a few dress designs and the rest is history. I am now 33, I have never got a fashion design degree, but I somehow ended up being a designer through tons of individual study, private classes and real life, hands on work experience building my own label. I started this adventure 5 years ago, I was 28. Now I'm 33, I have been having my own atelier in Milan for 2 years (after 3 years of sewing dresses in my living room), I create and sell dresses up to 2500 euros each, and I STILL don't have that damn fashion degree although it's one of my greatest desires. For me it might just be really too late to get a real fashion design degree, I simply don't have those 3 years to spend on it while having a business at the same time, and I couldn't pay the tuition fee AND run my business (not to mention maybe having a kid as it would be about time soon). But I did apply for a full scholarship for a 9 month fashion design intensive course in one of Milan's most sought after fashion schools. I'm still waiting for the results and hoping for the best. Anyway sorry Zoe that I took over your comments section with such a self advertising comment, but it was because I wanted to share that I totally resonate with what you are saying. It is never too late to study fashion or to become a designer if you learn to prioritize and make sacrifices in terms of time and money. (Yep it's still me, the one who bought your entire shop lol. You can tell I am a maniac by now 😍)

Yeah, life is like that sometimes. People's lives do not run on a straight trajectory. They're filled with random roadblocks and surprise twists like meeting the love of your life who happens to live in another city (that happened to me too!) And a degree isn't the most important thing. Good luck with your label!

I really love your channel. I can relate to this issue regarding age. I am just beginning or at least wanting to begin a career (hopefully) in fashion and I am in my 40s already. Will I switch fulltime? We never know. Maybe. But for now, I wanted to step in. I'm a chef (my second career after switching from social work almost a decade ago) and I love what I'm doing but I also would like to fulfill my longtime dream to become a fashion designer and start my own clothing line (it's more for my daughter now - it's like I want to leave her a legacy or a business since at 12 she's already into fashion). If my age had bothered me, I would not have enrolled in an online class to get a diploma in fashion design. I would not be here on your channel and watch your videos. So, yeah, I also believe that I am not too old to start my fashion career.
Thanks for all your wonderful videos. And because I am learning all the basics and fundamentals of fashion design through an online class, you have been my teacher/mentor. It is helping me a lot.

Two month ago, I started fashion design school at Toronto Film School. It's a part-time program and it's all online. Maybe you could find a way to make it work, too.
I'm in my 50's and thought I'd be 25-30 years older than everyone else, but I'm not even the oldest! Most are in their early 20's, and I have 2 women in my class who are in their 60's!! One of our instructors told our whole class that we're not too old
