Wow, I'm so suprised you reacted to Mariza! She's a really famous singer here in Portugal and she's also kinda well known abroad. The style of music she's singing is fado. If I could recomend some other singers I would say Amália Rodrigues. She was the one who gave fado an international status. Another great fado singer is Gisela João. Would really like to see your reaction to these singers!

In Fado you dont PUSH the voice, because is Fado. You must know first the culture of this style of this music to after talk about it.

To sing Fado is to "cry a story", usually a sad story made out of hardship, broken heart, loneliness and the feeling of emptiness by missing someone (in portuguese we have a word for it: "Saudade"). That's what she is doing. That harshness in the voice, that strain is what you get when crying.

omg I can't believe it! I've been following your channel recently and I'm Portuguese. I was not expecting this.
Marisa is singing fado. It is a Portuguese style and was considered immaterial heritage of humanity. It's something unique. Fado is very emotional, it aims to convey feelings, usually strong and sad.
The reason she sings with her mouth like that is because of the language, we don't open our mouths that much
Thanks for this reaction. Fado is very beautiful and I'm not saying this because I'm portuguese. Check out more about fado, I know you won't regret it

I don't speak Portuguese and am not familiar with this singing style - Some of the sounds I heard seemed to me to be related to the language. (I'm a native English speaker and I have sung Italian, German and French. There are unique vowel sounds in each language.) Very lovely voice and song.

Yes, I just wanted to say the same! Speakers of European Portuguese just seem to never open their mouths, not even when speaking. I've learnt that the hard way while I was studying in Lisbon and failed completely learning to speak this language, though it is very beautiful! I was surprised to see a reaction video to fado music here on this channel!

    • @miguelcoelho3877

That is, perhaps, Linda Schmit, because many Portuguese tend to be a bit taciturn when in the presence of strangers, but also tend to warm up after a little while, once they get to know the person a bit better. This is mostly because contrary to what most people seem to believe, we are not a Mediterranean people, (we don' tend to have the exuberance of, say, an Italian, or a Spaniard, or a Greek -- and this just on the European side of the Mediterranean) but rather an Atlantic one, used to feel a bit isolated in Europe, particularly with so many people either badmouthing us, or mistaking us for Spaniards (thinking that we are a province of Spain and that Portuguese is a dialect of "Spanish", etc.) and completely ignoring the facts of our History as the oldest of nations in Western Europe.
PS: I am sorry that you failed to learn the language while you were there studying, but I also know that the Portuguese language can be difficult to get a grasp of, even for many native speakers!

I honestly just subscribed yesterday and I feel so so so happy to have found this. I'm portuguese so i feel really glad that you reacted to fado, our country's traditional music. I'm not a music expert, not even close to be one and I honestly have no type of knowledge about music or vocals, but fado is about soul and emotion. There is melancholic fado and happier sounding fado, and Chuva (which means Rain) is about nostalgia and melancholia and the feeling of missing someone after the love is gone.
The portuguese language is (I might be wrong in what I am saying, so please do correct me) the only language that has a specific word for the feeling of longing or missing someone. That word is "saudade" and this song is about that. The way she sings with the shaking of her voice, the high ups and lows and the way like she sometimes seems as if whispering and others like she's screaming is all because she is converting those melancholic and nostalgic emotions into the crowd. It needs to be a raw sound so she uses a huskier voice.
Once again, I have no idea about technique or the way the voice is trained or used while singing but this is just what it feels to me. I believe that usually in sadder fado they tend to use a lot of husky and pulled/strained voices, while in happier fado, its more light sounding and clear.
Anyways, thank you so so so much for listening and reacting to fado! I'm really happy you enjoyed and I hope you can listen to some more!! I would like to recomend the spanish song "Perdóname" by Pablo Alborán and Carminho which is a portuguese fado singer. It's kind of like a mix of fado and spanish music and I absolutely love it!
I'll be waiting for your next react video!!

The Portuguese language (from Portugal) is a very hard languag to sing in since almost all the vowels are closed. Portuguese singers usually sing with their mouths very closed so that they can pronounce the words correctly. When you say she opens up its when the word itself has a open vowel. Also the style of music she is singing is linked to sadness and the feeling you get when you miss someone , so people sing it with this very characteristic deep sound you talk about

That containment you see is part of the story telling for this song, for this poem. She (us) is remembering a moment when her (our) heart got broken. This moment is in the past. A memory, a longing. But something that should not be brought to the present and more than that revealed to others. That pain is not allowed to be made loud. Public. Uncontrolled. So her voice reflects that. The emotional tension is there, you can feel it but its forcefully restrained.
That is why for a portuguese speaker this is such a beautiful song. The poetry of the lyrics marries the song to tell a story. A story of a heart that was broken and suffered and now only has the longing for a time when it was whole. That hides its emotions with a fassade of serenity or melancholy

Fado carries quite heavy emotions with it; "saudade" is a Portuguese word that can describe it, as a sort of happy longing (when you are both sad something can never happen again but also happy because it did, basically). The sort of closed harsh sound is due to the style of music. She's singing fado, and this is something you will hear other fado singers do too. It's a way to convey sorrow.
Also Continental/European Portuguese tends to have a more closed sound to it's vowels so this is also in part because of that. I'm very happy to see you listening to the fado. It's a really big part of our culture. I hope you will continue to listen to it and that you will get much joy from it.

Hi Sam Johnson. Marisa started to sing Fado at 6 years old and later on during her teens she sang metal and rock. She went back to Fado when she became famous. The hoarseness you mentioned is actually very similar to her talking voice.
In regards to high notes Fado doesn’t have very high notes because while singing Fado the “goal” isn’t the technique or high notes or even a clean or beautiful voice. It’s the feeling that’s imprinted on the lyrics and how they are sang. Fado is a bohemian song born in the poor neighborhoods of Lisbon and when it’s sung in Fado Houses it’s meant to be accompanied by the audience during the last instrumental bit before the last chorus by LaLaLaLa. If it had high notes it wouldn’t be possible for everyone to sing along.
Thank you for listening to a very important part of Portuguese culture and identity.

A very important fact about this show is that was a very emotional one for Mariza. She even cried in the middle of another song. I believe that the "closed mouth" / "pressed teeth" is just a way to maintain posture as she would be extremely emotional and that emotion could involuntary change the shape of mouth as she sings creating disruptance on the sound/key she was making.

The very closed sounds are usual on Fado (a traditional music style from Portugal), the style she's singing in (or the one she is based on). Also something characteristic from Fado is that "abused" tremolo

Really appreciate your comments. Fado is a unique kind of music in the world, originally from Portugal and is a Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Mariza is one of the biggest singers in these modern times. Each singer gives Fado its own personal touch, its feelings and without undestanding a word of Portuguese, people are able to feel all the emotions and feelings that this type os song and music is intended to give us. Thats what makes Fado unique and universal. Listen to more songs and singers and you'll be able to understand it. Regarding Mariza, several others Fados are available and every one of them tell you a story and reveal her unique voice, capacity and style.

Hi Sam. In the first part that you see her smile, closing the mouth and see her teeth it's normal of the performance because in that part she talks about the smile that she'll never forget. So it's only performance. Fado is really different than other styles of music. There is not higher voices in Fado. Normally they use the range of talking. More throat than diafragma. Fado is an expression of missing someone, missing something. We called it "saudade". This word doesn't have translation to other languages, it's only ours. It's like you want to embrace someone or something but you really can't even when you try your best. Thank you for listening to her 😍 Great job

Ayyy you did Fado! Tbh you should look into that (not necessarily for a RUclips video, but just cuz I think you'd find it interesting as a music genre/style). Many Fado singers sing like that, like they're singing while inhaling as opposed to exhaling & most of the songs are written about saudade (the feeling of missing something or someone or sometime or somewhere... You get it) which is why it sounds a lil bit like weeping

I already saw many people saying she's singing fado but what I'd really like to add is that "fado" comes from the Latin word "factum" which means destiny. So they say who sings fado is singing destiny. What this means is that fado is all about feelings, more than hitting notes and all that stuff, and the lyrics are also usually very poetic!

Portuguese from Portugal is spoken with a very closed mouth. It would be fun if you could react to one the greatest singer from Brazil, Elis Regina. Because in Brazil our Portuguese is more open, we articulate the same vowel with so many different sounds but we have a more nasal sound. Our accent is completely different from Portugal. Maybe it would be enlightening to see the way different accents affect singing. Elis Regina is a goddess but she never ever had vocal training. I suggest this song: ruclips.net/video/6kVBqefGcf4/видео.html

That stylist jaw tension is mandatory to interpret this unique Portuguese music style, to sing Fado you always have to use this technique, it is a powerful tool to express sadness and melancholy (main characteristic of this music style).

In the end she was expressing sadness and loneliness, she was really expressing those emotions, and she will often cry when going to dark feelings. Those sounds dont come from techniques, they come from emotions. Things that milenials will not understand XD
