I had the good fortune to interact with Bruce Lee at the 1967 Internationals and the Cal State tournament in San Francisco, 1969. I was one of the only white practitioners of Chinese Gung Fu in U.S. Karate tournaments at the time, and James Yimm Lee invited me to the Jun Fan Gung Fu Institute at his home in Oakland; where Bruce and Linda first went after leaving Washington. Bruce was one of the coolest guys I ever met; not the insecure, mortido-oriented little braggart Tarantino portrayed in the film. Bruce was a bigger person than that. In general, I thought OATIH was based on a brilliant idea: "What would have happened if the Manson Family went to the wrong house that night?" Now, Quentin gets to slaughter someone everyone in Hollywood hates. Genius, really. But trashing Bruce in the process was uncalled for That said, Bruce would have laughed at it. The portrayal was like the rest of the movie: intended as a humorous abstraction of life. I get that and I think Bruce would have, too. The legend of Bruce Lee won't be hurt by any movie made by Tarantino. I mean, there is no invincible man, and his victory would depend on the situation, style, weight and many other factors. The thing that bothers is that he, of all people, believes, that a book he read and maybe some tv interviews can give him a hint of how a person is really like. He should know that once a camera turns on, people start acting, even if they are not actors.

I saw an interview with Linda Lee and she said that if Bruce and Ali were put into a room and allowed to fight their way that she believed Bruce would come out the winner. Ali in an interview said he would only fight a martial artist if he weren't allowed to kick. Well, that's unfairly handicapping the martial artist for that is a huge part of their style. In a recent study as to who punched harder a boxer or a martial artist, the boxer won hands down primarily because he spends the majority of his training just hitting where the martial artist has to invest time kicking, learning katas, weapons, etc... Myself personally having been involved in both fields, it's hard enough to knock a man down even more so knockout someone within your own weight class. Ali was 6'3 Lee was 5'7, Ali weighed 220 lbs Lee 135lbs, an Ali jab would be too much for Bruce to handle.

  • @mikomi23

I think it comes down to labels people are given. They never really give the full picture or explanation of the person they are attached to. Someone is labelled a martial artist, but it doesn't describe their style, techniques, philosophy, reaction and level of commitment. Someone is labelled a stuntman/woman, but it doesn't describe their eye for detail, their mathematical knowledge, split second timing, and physical abilities. The scene in the movie for me plays right into that as both Bruce and Cliff believe they have the measure of each other from what the other has said in that short space of dialogue. They both got caught out in false expectation, and adapted on the fly. I don't think it was disrespectful to Bruce Lee, because he wasn't just a martial artist. It's just one aspect of a truly amazing man 🙂

I love Tarantino as a director and love all the films I've seen by him, but he misrepresents an icon here. Also I don't care for how that fight went. Bruce Lees only hit is one Brad Pitts character probably let him have, it would have been ok if there wasn't a clear answer of who'd win, but it's ruined because Tarantino himself says Brad Pitts character would win.

So I've made a number of comments on this brouhaha...and here I go again, lol. People are worked up on both sides of the issue; many are ones defending Bruce's character and many are like, "Chill the fuck out, guys; it's just a movie." Here's my two yen on that shit: Bruce Lee means a LOT to people. Asians have a looong-ass history of being marginalized and lampooned and stereotyped in the movie/TV industry, and the ONE TIME where one individual went "I'mma CHANGE all that" was when this little Chinese guy who played Kato on The Green Hornet and made it THE show to watch got denied the lead role in a TV series he fucking CONCEIVED and decided to blast his foot through Hollywood's backdoor by returning to Hong Kong and starring in a handful of kickass movies that revolutionized martial arts pictures, broke box office records all over Asia, and had goddamn Warner Bros-the studio that screwed him out of the Kung Fu series-practically begging him to do the very FIRST international East/West collaboration with Golden Harvest Studios, the film company he put on the global map with his unstoppable and borderline fanatical drive, talent, and self-belief. No Asian that followed him has even come CLOSE to achieving what he did. Like the equally iconic Ali-someone he admired the shit out of in spite of what Tarantino would have you believe-Bruce transcended being a martial artist or an actor/filmmaker or even someone of Asian descent who straddled the Eastern and Western continents with ease. He was, as he stated in his famous Lost Interview, a human being. And one who connected not just to Asians but to all minorities around the world. As I heard someone say once, "In the '70s, if you walked into any young black man's room, you were almost guaranteed to see three posters: The Jackson 5, Muhammad Ali, and..." I'll give you one guess who. And as many Asian dudes from that era will tell you, after Lee exploded on the scene-and this period of time didn't last long enough for me-non-Asian dudes would think TWICE about fucking with you because, "Hey, that tiny Bruce Lee cat is one bad motherfucker so who knows about THIS one?" Yeaaah…those were the days, lol. Anyway, all that and more, my friends, is what Quentin is stepping on when he fucks with the image of the Little Dragon, so try to have a tad more empathy for the negative reactions. ‘Cause if you DON’T…cue cracking knuckle sound.

Instead he crosses them by proving that he really doesn't know shit for someone claiming to be a fan of Bruce Lee and becomes a perfect example of someone insensitive to the racial history of Hollywood by not doing proper research. @@chy4919 He was arrogant at times in his life though. Because he was enormously talented and skilled, but still a human being. Tarantino's not the first to point that out either.
People like to cite what he was like towards the end of his life, after he'd seriously injured himself and was forced to be introspective for a long period of time. People tend to learn more after they've suffered a failure.
Bruce Lee showed tremendous character and wisdom towards the end of the life, but that didn't come out of nowhere. He had to work at it. The vast majority of people never get to that point. Not because they're incapable of it, but because they don't put the level of work into it that someone like Bruce Lee did.

I thought Mike Moh did a really good job. He definitely look the part and got everything from the body down to a T. In the scene I didn’t really have a problem with the way that Bruce Lee was handled because even know that Brad Pitt did throw him to a car Bruce got right back up and continued to fight him not only that but before Brad Pitt did that, Bruce did get a kick out of him and knocked him down to the floor first so I don’t think the betrayal of Bruce Lee is disrespectful to him. However I can see where Bruce Lee’s daughter is coming from because as a father your child does look up to you and how you see your father is very different from how everyone else sees her father.

The other thing about Bruce Lee is that he actually never made those fighting scream sounds. Those were always dubbed in by someone else in his movies. He might have made grunts and yells during fights but never the high pitched squealing you hear in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood

Anywho a lot good points has been made here and lets not make it personal we should be able to have opinions as well a healthy debate and dialog it's clear that we are passionate people with some good points and different views and it's OK to agree to disagree, after all this is what make us human. Certainly we're all unique individuals and interesting as we all have something to bring to the table to share and express. A quote from Bruce Lee philosophy "True martial arts is that one can express himself honestly". Peace out everyone may you all have a great week and good things happen for you and those that you love.

This has got to be one of the most ridiculous idiotic comment I've ever read on u tube. Honored the director remembered him you can't be that stupid impossible. Bruce Lee is by far the most popular well known martial artists in the world. All the greatest fighters of today have gotten their inspiration from Bruce Lee.

  • @GiantSandles

I don't really care about depicting him as arrogant just the idea that some run of the mill stuntman would be able to beat him in a fight seems a bit silly.

    • @jackanaples
      @jackanaples 4 года назад +3

That's the point that passed you by though. Cliff Booth isn't a run of the mill stuntman. The scene begins with Bruce Lee telling everyone about his views on fighting and the type of fighters that are better than athletes judged on form. True warriors who fight in real combat. Who are better than him. These statements are if memory serves, at least paraphrases of things Lee actually said or wrote.
What Lee and the audience don't know is the hypothetical warrior he's describing? That's Cliff Booth right down to the ground: WWII veteran, decorated war hero, ex U.S. Army Special Forces Green Beret. Never fought in a ring, but killed plenty of men in hand to hand combat.
Tarantino's genius is to be the one person who payed attention to what Bruce Lee said about fighters who were better than he was, and then craft his fictional character from that as a starting point.

Just because you are a bigger fighter that doesn't mean that you can beat on a smaller guy. I think people are stupid nowadays 😂. Just remember David and Goliath... Also, another good example is Samson from the Bible. I believe that God decides who wins and who looses, it's not on how much you train, but it depends on God.
