These stays are absolutely fabulous. I'm fully obsessed with that fabric (devastated it's actually upholstery fabric, I was ready to go looking for it) and the shape is super flattering on you!
i love the idea of a sewing club! that sounds like so much fun. i've done one sew-a-long for an 18th century tie on pocket hosted by OurShieldMaiden last year and i really enjoyed that even tho it was a super simple project

Those are so lovely, I love the shape of the stays, and the fabric! I'm so ready for autumn themed content as well, I'm in a heatwave and drought and am so done with it, now just counting down till Sept!
I kept seeing this fabric at Joann’s but couldn’t bring myself to buy it since I already had several other fabrics in the cart. I’m so happy to see it used for stays since that’s what I would have had in mind for it as well! It turned out so pretty!!
I loved seeing how things turned out! I'm fairly certain our body shapes are dofferent but I'm excited to check out the pattern and see how I would need to alter it for my body. Thanks again for explaining some of the construction methods! Maybe I can finally get rid of that weird rippling I see between my boning channels...
Gosh I am so jealous of the fabric you found! I went to my local JoAnns and there was nothing like that. (I'm definitely not sobbing over it). The stays are stunning! Thank you for sharing your process. I was watching your other stay videos over the week while I worked on mine, nothing like seeing one of your sewing inspirations make beautiful clothing. I finished my redthreaded stays just in time for the weekend to go to Ren Faire, granted I RUSHED through them so I need to go back and do proper finishing.
honestly this joanns is not close to me at all haha but it's the biggest one near me! the ones in my actual area are much less impressive lol. but thats so exciting!! i hope you had fun at the renfaire!!
These patterned fabrics you pick look sooo good as stays, i'm loving them! This one in particular reminds me of my grandma's house (i think the wallpapers in one of the bedrooms has the same pattern, in a different color scheme and it was my fav thing as a kid), makes it very cosy to me lmao Also the cutting with cat bit was adorbs

Aww this turned out soooo cute! I love the fabric you chose for the final look! sooo cute! I love the tails in this look! I'm sorry the fabric was so frustrating...They look amazing! I'm so glad your on the mend with a new tooth! congrats! I love love love the idea of a sewing club that creates something every so often together! That is sooo cool! The steps and tips you added in this video was so insightful! Maybe try putting a little thicker of a black ribbon over it without taking off the first biding? I love this as a witch look!
Aw thank you! About the fabric and about the tooth haha. The sewing club is really fun! It’s a little difficult coordinating all of our schedules but it’s nice getting to talk about the sewing projects we’re working on! Also that’s a good idea about the black ribbon!
I love how Mister Cat turns his-self into a flexible pattern weight when cutting out. The corset came out absolutely beautiful. Well done. It looks super comfortable. I'm currently tracing out my 1950's vintage pattern for cigarette pants. I'm going to be upsizing them. First pair of pants and first time adding on this many inches to a pattern (the bust size is me, the waist measurements are... a distant memory). Hopefully the mock-ups will be kind. In the normal course of life I'd be putting this project off until the fall, but I got into a conversation with the nice elderly lady in Louisiana who was selling it. She's peer pressuring me for photos of the finished pants. Which is fun, I may be getting a sewing pen pal as well as a pair of pants out of the deal. But I haven't yet broke it to her that I usually sew at a snails pace... - Cathy (&, accidently, Steve), Ottawa/Bytown/Pimisi
@@moth.faerie Having an audience for a pair of pants is a very good motivator. Now all I have to do is the slash and spread and mock this baby up. Needles crossed, it works out decently.
How perfect! I bought this pattern last week and now you have a video about it! I'm especially excited since we have similar measurements/fit issues with standard patterns. I'm much more excited to print it out and use it now. =) Also, so good to see you getting more use out of your previous leather-working projects. I loved it when you jumped into the deep end to make that belt and pouch. They really compliment this project, too!
Thanks again for your review! it was really interesting to hear your opinion and the final product is amazing! 😍 Also I love the idea of a sewing club, this is such a good idea!!
Hi Minjee! You are gorgeous in that outfit😊 thanks for sharing your tips on this. You projects always look so beautiful and neat😃 No no , I am not remotely jealous right now😉😉😉. I hope your tooth is not too painful 😓 See you in your next video 🥰
Do you have any thoughts on doing a video that shows how you edit videos and managing cameras and stuff like that because I would love a "behind the scenes" kind of video
Love your videos! I have been sewing for quite some time and can still learn new tricks here :) For your boning, what size synthetic whalebone do you use? I've used spiral steel in the past but it can get so heavy. Do you just get the same size as you would use in steel or is there a difference in the amount of support and structure they give? Thanks!
I think I use 7mm? Its a little flatter than the 6mm if I recall correctly. It’s definitely much lighter than spiral steel and a little less supportive
It's so beautiful! I just printed out the pattern and the boning channels seen a bit small. Did you have to widen your boning channels? The test square measures correctly on my printed pattern.
Are the shoulder straps supposed to stay up? Do they serve a structural purpose? Having them fall off my shoulders would drive me nuts! Or, did you simply not tie the ribbons as tight as needed for them to stay vertical?
This turned out so beautiful! I have this exact fabric that I'm planning to use to make some stays to wear to a renn faire. Of the stays patterns you've tried, do you have a recommendation for the best one for a beginner to start with?
Thank you! If you’re using this fabric I would def recommend making stays without tabs so altering a pattern to cut off the tabs. If you look for my renaissance stays from last year around this time I made tabless stays 😊 otherwise I really like red threadeds 1780s stays
@@moth.faerie Redthreaded 1780s stays pattern is the one I bought after watching your video on it! I’m making a mock-up now with tabs for fit, but I’ll definitely remove the tabs for my final version with the fabric you used in this video. I love the look of tabs, but I’ll have to save making stays with tabs for when I’m better at sewing and using an easier fabric. Thanks for the tips! I really love your channel and the projects you do!
Haha thank you for understanding the struggle 😂 I’m sorry you don’t have better fabric stores though! I do buy fabric on Etsy occasionally if that helps?
Thank you for all the tips on how to make stays, I've always been kind of scared of doing stays cause they look so intricate, what fabric would you recommend for stays? is it always 3 layers?
it doesn't have to be three layers, it can be as few as 1! typically i'll do two layers, the fashion outer and the coutil/canvas strength layer. if i only do one layer i use bone casing for the channels. anything tightly woven but not too heavy will work
Love love love the way this turned out!! And.bro, I've used upholstery fabric for all my stays bc ITS TOO PRETTY NOT TO Also I'm goin through the same dental stuff right now, so girl you're not alone, dont.worry about. It at all 😊
I personally don’t use them much just bc I forget and also lose them all the time 😅 but they’re definitely helpful when I’m hand sewing through thicker materials, I just usually suffer a little haha
I have a very stupid question dear, how much fabric yard do you usually buy for your size? I never made stays and I am so not good at knowing how much fabric I would need to do them.
Just a little piece of constructive criticism: it would really help foster an inclusive community if you highlight patterns that are size inclusive or just say at the start that unfortunately this pattern only accommodates a certain size range. It's just disappointing to hear how wonderful a pattern is and think the end result is so stunning and go to the pattern page and realize it only goes up to a size L. That being said, most of the patterns you've recommended before have actually been relatively inclusive so thank you for that!
It seems like she does usually mention sizing, at least when talking about paid for patterns, but I'd guess maybe a lot of free patterns don't offer many different sizes. They are free, after all. A couple I've looked at are just one size, so you'd either need to be around that size and only need tweaks, or you'd need to know how to fully adjust it to a new size.
I'd like to jump in here as someone who makes their own patterns frequently and has been sewing for ten plus years, if this pattern is for 26" waist or lower, in order to get it over a size L, all you would have to do is add 3cm all the way around the pattern and it would fit at least a UK size 22 (which is roughly a 44"-45" bust and would fit anyone with a natural waist of 40-43" and a hip of 50-52") if you do this method, I'd still recommend making a mock up so you can keep track of any alterations needed. Or, respectively, you can count how many seams there are, and with a list of your measurements for bust, waist and hips, you can divide those measurements by the number of seams and it will tell you how much you can extend the pattern by. (Minus seam allowances) I hope this helps.
