it's not too difficult I promise! Stays especially are less tricky to fit because they're not meant to curve around your body so much, and then all the putting together is just making sure to pay close attention to what you're doing. You can do it!
Technical question - when you were transferring the stays to the canvas, did you put in perforations in the pattern block for easier mapping onto the fabric??? You really should consider making some stand-along 'how-to' one-off videos... Sadly we don't seem to do Ren Fairs like you Yanks do. They look like a bunch of fun. The chemise is so delicate. Enough for a shall, a circle skirt, a pencil skirt, an 1890's walking skirt, a Keystone vest (with a welt pocket for my watch), a matching pencil skirt and jacket (Totally going for the Jackie O vibe), and a double-breasted fitted 1950's jacket with a lovely flared collar. i just poke a hole with my pencil at the top and bottom of the boning channel for these since they're all straight channels! maybe once I get through the holiday season and the next project I'll do a how to on it! I don't think I've done anything similar, the closest I can think of is something like disneyland but no one really dresses up the same way. that's so exciting about the wool!! maybe it's a sign for you to start your own channel!

My practice for how to do how-to videos is about to be teaching our friend / slash / family-of-choice's 19 year old son how to sew on a vintage White machine. I am honestly so pumped about this, it's kind of hilarious first project, he learns how to make his own ham. Then he can design his own hussiff. Then we work through the wardrobe, starting with some skirts... he's gonna learn how to draft. Now all I need to do is remember how the heck I did my bodice block last summer. Thankfully I kept a notebook. And Yes. Please. Do some how-to's. Not only will they be fab. They will also be a big help to your viewing numbers. Because how many times did I put Ms. B's video on repeat while I was learning how to fell a seam... You can plan out a bunch of videos and do a little mini thing of them when you need a break for a week.
I’ve been backtracking to check out your oldest videos and I am amazed by all the pieces you created yourself. Any chance you could do a tour of your closet : show use the stays, corsets, chemises, skirts and so on you made? As well as the leatherwork and accessories? You could go over what held up and has been worn again, what you learned from it, etc…
I really love that you show your thought process while fitting the mock-up and go into every little thing that needs adjusting in the video! I started sewing and costuming just a couple years ago but I haven't made many close fitting garments yet so it's very helpful :D

I added 1 more of the horizontal bones in the front lacing version and made the bones in the center front the length of the channels. With tabs I didn't have to add length to the waist for a comfortable fit

I've seen the finished product on your IG and I'm very excited for this series. Shhdhsj I was wondering how you made the stylistic wrinkles on the chamise. We don't have renesans fairs in most (if not all) of Europe so it's fascinating to learn more about them
haha chemise wrinkles were totally an accident but shhhh I'm glad you though it was on purpose! renfairs are so much fun! I feel like Europe would have such great opportunity to hold them in some really beautiful places too - all of ours are completely built from the ground up since our oldest buildings are really not that old at all 😅
i LOVE bullet journaling! I don't know that i'll do a full video on it ever, but I'll definitely try to include it more in my videos and maybe post to the community tab with some stuff! I use a sketchbook and a bullet journal for project planning - the bullet journal is more for scheduling, notes, and reference images, and the sketchbook is for, well, sketches obviously haha, but also where I put my swatches since they would make my bullet journal's spine very unhappy!

Fyi, tabs are more for extra skirt support/floof that fits the fashion of the day but more importantly for comfort so that you don't have a hard edge right at the waist where the most pressure typically is. Ultimately taking them off just means you're probably not going to where them happily all day off you really try to use them for bust support. They do look gorgeous and you should be proud!

This is the first video of yours that I am watching and I'm super impressed with the quality! I have a few preferencial comments on the style/execution of the video: 1. I love the aesthetic but the moody(?) lighting is a bit too dark to me. Since the shots and the camera quality seems high, I would love to see just a bit more of everything (like the cute cat!) and 2. I would love the length of the clips (process close-ups, reveal shots) to be a couple seconds longer. I find myself having to pause/slow to catch a better look of everything. Again, since the image quality is so high, I want to watch it for longer to get a good look and appreciate it. Regardless, keep doing you and thanks for making awesome content! The corset looks really lovely!

There is a book called "Patterns of Fashion 5: The content, cut, construction and context of bodies, stays, hoops and rumps c. 1595 - 1795". There is a picture of four different stays on the cover, but no dates added to the pictures.
Has anyone told you that you could do amazing asmr videos? The sounds of rain, sewing machine going, etc., so satisfying. Baby Bat is the queen in this one. I really like the color scheme you went for, such happy autumnal colors. And they work with your wardrobe, too! Do you wear your costume pieces in real life later on? Your wardrobe choices in the videos are always stunning.
haha thank you! I've had a few people tell me they always like the sound of the scissors and pencil but I don't think they knew what asmr is 😅 maybe I'll make a no talking asmr sewing video! though I can never seem to keep my mouth shut lol. I wear some of them in real life! The pieces that are really costume specific, like most of my Alice pieces don't tend to fit into my wardrobe very well - for some reason I make a lot of blue costumes but only wear blue very occasionally in real life? But for costumes like this and the witch I definitely design them around being able to use the pieces as actual clothes!
Full disclosure: I love your chatty videos, they are fun to watch, to sew to and you share tips often (btw thanks for that). But if you ever end up with unused cozy sewing footage, why not make a small asmr video? Just an idea if you ever need some filler content. Alternatively, kitty videos are always welcome.
Beautiful! I'm excited to see the whole thing put together, and your fabric choices for this are lovely! I would LOVE to see you make the design on the right side of your illustrations choice #3. Two questions for you: 1) Have you ever tried cutting chiffon (or super sheer) fabric with a layer of tissue paper underneath? (tissue paper, fabric, then pattern piece on top) I've heard it helps to hold it steady, but haven't had the opportunity to try it myself. 2) For someone who doesn't need boning at the top for support, would cording work as a less functional and more decorative option?
thank you! Yess honestly that was my top choice but I opted to go for the design I could make without having to buy much fabric. Maybe next year! I haven't cut with a layer of tissue paper, mostly because I don't want to dull any of my scissors by cutting through paper. I think the serrated scissors also work just as well! I feel like I might get frustrated with the tissue paper because it would prevent me from touching and adjusting the fabric directly? The cording is SUCH A GOOD IDEA I can't believe I didn't think of that, thank you for the great suggestion I will definitely try that next time I make this style of stays!
@@moth.faerie Thanks for the reply. I thought the same thing about the scissors, but I keep seeing it pop up as a way to manage slippery fabrics. I had not heard of serrated scissors. If I find myself working with challenging fabric, I will look for the scissors before trying out the tissue paper, I think. I'm so glad you liked the idea of the cording! I have no idea if it is "period", but since it is for a fairy, anyway, seems fair game. lol
@@kathleenwhalen1450 the stays are technically from a later period anyways (I think I said 1780s? I can't remember right now 😅) so cording might actually be accurate for them! I was going for more general fantasy renaissance aesthetic anyways
I was thinking about this while you made your mock up and I don't know if maybe you added it off screen or not, but the problem you were mentioning about the boning not sitting right could be because you need to add a center busk so that it adds stability to your stays. Whatever the problem is I hope you're able to fix it, the stays came out beautiful I love the patterned fabric you chose ^ _ ^
thank you! I'm not actually sure if a busk would fix it? Idk lol they did make stays like this without busks historically so there must be some way to secure the bones in place so it doesn't crunch in on itself.. haha it's a mystery to me, maybe someday I'll come upon the historical solution
I know small chance my question will get answered, but here it is. So you made a "mock up" of the corset first. Was that just the inside layer that you made, and then fit to your body from there? I ask, because towards end area of that part, you attached your mock up to the Golden fabric one you made as well. It seemed to me like you made the gold one with adjustments you saw you needed, and then hand sewn the 2 edges of both layers together. Did I understand that right? Why didn't you use the machine to sew along the edges to sew it all together? If I have ? On rest of it, I will do another comment. Ty!
My Renaissance faire costume this year was solidly 18th century (with a little bit of fantasy tossed in there) so very much not the actual Renaissance in any way, but the nice thing about RenFest is that nobody cares about historical accuracy!
it seems like 18th century is definitely a popular look for renfest! I definitely don't mind about the lack of historical accuracy, I think it gives a lot more freedom for creativity!

The chemise fabric is from silkbaron, unfortunately I don't remember where the fabric for the stays came from, sorry! The grommet press is from wawak.com and is the CS Osborne Hand Press Machine. I think it's the only one on their site
I use a 1/2" seam allowance to sew then trim it down to reduce bulk and make it easier for curves to sit correctly. I usually trim down to ~1/4" to 1/8" depending on the fabric and the curve. I most often use 2 layers of fabric - one layer of coutil, and one layer of fashion fabric. If I had a more decorative coutil then I would just do one layer. hope that helps!
1650 to 1693 stays would be great. :) I have tried to find patterns, but been unsuccessful. From looking at the Queen Elizabeth 1's Effigy pattern (the one examined in 1995), I'm not sure it's period accurate. :s It looks "too new" to me. So I was hoping for another, "older looking" pattern. There is an old German stays pattern, from Dorothea von Neuburg, but that one looks like strictly underwear. I wouldn't want to use that one in public. Thanks for the video.
I have my next two big projects planned out - Tudor period and regency, but after that I'll do some research into that period! I think the Queen Elizabeth stays would be closer to 1600? I'll look more into it and see what I can find!
I have the Dorothea Von Neuburg pattern. I made one as an under garment for my Elizabethan dress (late 1500 to early 1600. There is a way to make the stays for outer wear. You have to put the boning between the liner and the canvas then put the outer fabric and that makes the boning less noticeable. I also changed the shoulder straps to be able to use the ribbons like in this video. Side note, I paid the extra money to have the pattern fitted and it fits perfectly. I definitely recommend paying the extra money to get a pattern fitted exactly for you.

I have tried to find out about Dorothea Von Neuburg, but there is very little info about her online. Seems like she was buried in the clothes, and they dug her up at some point? :s Her outer dress is in a museum too. I didn't even know you could have the pattern fitted. Thanks.
Please post footage that the thumbnails are from! I'm always so disappointed when thumbnails don't match the footage. Your work is beautiful but your reveals are too short and too zoomed in.
Me just try not to deal with the stays I want to make because thwy scarring me. First the size way to small of the pattern I want to use and not resized before. Then no idea what order to make it in either. But should start mockups because the costume should be done this summer and have a gole enable to make and bo idea how to make it. Wjen you normally just make modern cloths
they're much less scary than they look! definitely doing a bunch of mockups will help with the size, but once you've figured that out it's mostly just sewing it together like a normal garment, adding boning channels and grommets and thats about it!
really pretty, great craftsmanship, but still confused why the title has corset in it just for the correction later. I get it's for the algorithm, but you're losing respect with the non beginner sewing community.

This is the first video of yours that I am watching and I'm super impressed with the quality! I have a few preferencial comments on the style/execution of the video: 1. I love the aesthetic but the moody(?) lighting is a bit too dark to me. Since the shots and the camera quality seems high, I would love to see just a bit more of everything (like the cute cat!) and 2. I would love the length of the clips (process close-ups, reveal shots) to be a couple seconds longer. I find myself having to pause/slow to catch a better look of everything. Again, since the image quality is so high, I want to watch it for longer to get a good look and appreciate it. Regardless, keep doing you and thanks for making awesome content! The corset looks really lovely!
thanks for the feedback! you're not the first to mention that my videos are kind of dark, and I'll chalk part of that up to personal style and preference, but I'm starting to also think my monitor might just be very bright? Definitely will keep in mind lengthening some of my clips!

There is a book called "Patterns of Fashion 5: The content, cut, construction and context of bodies, stays, hoops and rumps c. 1595 - 1795". There is a picture of four different stays on the cover, but no dates added to the pictures.

Has anyone told you that you could do amazing asmr videos? The sounds of rain, sewing machine going, etc., so satisfying. Baby Bat is the queen in this one. I really like the color scheme you went for, such happy autumnal colors. And they work with your wardrobe, too! Do you wear your costume pieces in real life later on? Your wardrobe choices in the videos are always stunning.
haha thank you! I've had a few people tell me they always like the sound of the scissors and pencil but I don't think they knew what asmr is 😅 maybe I'll make a no talking asmr sewing video! though I can never seem to keep my mouth shut lol. I wear some of them in real life! The pieces that are really costume specific, like most of my Alice pieces don't tend to fit into my wardrobe very well - for some reason I make a lot of blue costumes but only wear blue very occasionally in real life? But for costumes like this and the witch I definitely design them around being able to use the pieces as actual clothes!
Full disclosure: I love your chatty videos, they are fun to watch, to sew to and you share tips often (btw thanks for that). But if you ever end up with unused cozy sewing footage, why not make a small asmr video? Just an idea if you ever need some filler content. Alternatively, kitty videos are always welcome.
Beautiful! I'm excited to see the whole thing put together, and your fabric choices for this are lovely! I would LOVE to see you make the design on the right side of your illustrations choice #3. Two questions for you: 1) Have you ever tried cutting chiffon (or super sheer) fabric with a layer of tissue paper underneath? (tissue paper, fabric, then pattern piece on top) I've heard it helps to hold it steady, but haven't had the opportunity to try it myself. 2) For someone who doesn't need boning at the top for support, would cording work as a less functional and more decorative option?
thank you! Yess honestly that was my top choice but I opted to go for the design I could make without having to buy much fabric. Maybe next year! I haven't cut with a layer of tissue paper, mostly because I don't want to dull any of my scissors by cutting through paper. I think the serrated scissors also work just as well! I feel like I might get frustrated with the tissue paper because it would prevent me from touching and adjusting the fabric directly? The cording is SUCH A GOOD IDEA I can't believe I didn't think of that, thank you for the great suggestion I will definitely try that next time I make this style of stays!
@@moth.faerie Thanks for the reply. I thought the same thing about the scissors, but I keep seeing it pop up as a way to manage slippery fabrics. I had not heard of serrated scissors. If I find myself working with challenging fabric, I will look for the scissors before trying out the tissue paper, I think. I'm so glad you liked the idea of the cording! I have no idea if it is "period", but since it is for a fairy, anyway, seems fair game. lol
Cording isn't "accurate" in the Renaissance but makes an appearance in later centuries.
@@kathleenwhalen1450 the stays are technically from a later period anyways (I think I said 1780s? I can't remember right now 😅) so cording might actually be accurate for them! I was going for more general fantasy renaissance aesthetic anyways
I was thinking about this while you made your mock up and I don't know if maybe you added it off screen or not, but the problem you were mentioning about the boning not sitting right could be because you need to add a center busk so that it adds stability to your stays. Whatever the problem is I hope you're able to fix it, the stays came out beautiful I love the patterned fabric you chose ^ _ ^
thank you! I'm not actually sure if a busk would fix it? Idk lol they did make stays like this without busks historically so there must be some way to secure the bones in place so it doesn't crunch in on itself.. haha it's a mystery to me, maybe someday I'll come upon the historical solution

I know small chance my question will get answered, but here it is.
So you made a "mock up" of the corset first. Was that just the inside layer that you made, and then fit to your body from there? I ask, because towards end area of that part, you attached your mock up to the Golden fabric one you made as well. It seemed to me like you made the gold one with adjustments you saw you needed, and then hand sewn the 2 edges of both layers together. Did I understand that right? Why didn't you use the machine to sew along the edges to sew it all together? If I have ? On rest of it, I will do another comment. Ty!

My Renaissance faire costume this year was solidly 18th century (with a little bit of fantasy tossed in there) so very much not the actual Renaissance in any way, but the nice thing about RenFest is that nobody cares about historical accuracy!
it seems like 18th century is definitely a popular look for renfest! I definitely don't mind about the lack of historical accuracy, I think it gives a lot more freedom for creativity!

I've spent the past few days making corsets and have been using your videos as my guides
I use a 1/2" seam allowance to sew then trim it down to reduce bulk and make it easier for curves to sit correctly. I usually trim down to ~1/4" to 1/8" depending on the fabric and the curve. I most often use 2 layers of fabric - one layer of coutil, and one layer of fashion fabric. If I had a more decorative coutil then I would just do one layer. hope that helps!

1650 to 1693 stays would be great. :) I have tried to find patterns, but been unsuccessful. From looking at the Queen Elizabeth 1's Effigy pattern (the one examined in 1995), I'm not sure it's period accurate. :s It looks "too new" to me. So I was hoping for another, "older looking" pattern. There is an old German stays pattern, from Dorothea von Neuburg, but that one looks like strictly underwear. I wouldn't want to use that one in public. Thanks for the video.
I have my next two big projects planned out - Tudor period and regency, but after that I'll do some research into that period! I think the Queen Elizabeth stays would be closer to 1600? I'll look more into it and see what I can find!

I have the Dorothea Von Neuburg pattern. I made one as an under garment for my Elizabethan dress (late 1500 to early 1600. There is a way to make the stays for outer wear. You have to put the boning between the liner and the canvas then put the outer fabric and that makes the boning less noticeable. I also changed the shoulder straps to be able to use the ribbons like in this video.
Side note, I paid the extra money to have the pattern fitted and it fits perfectly. I definitely recommend paying the extra money to get a pattern fitted exactly for you.

I have tried to find out about Dorothea Von Neuburg, but there is very little info about her online. Seems like she was buried in the clothes, and they dug her up at some point? :s Her outer dress is in a museum too. I didn't even know you could have the pattern fitted. Thanks.

Me just try not to deal with the stays I want to make because thwy scarring me. First the size way to small of the pattern I want to use and not resized before. Then no idea what order to make it in either. But should start mockups because the costume should be done this summer and have a gole enable to make and bo idea how to make it. Wjen you normally just make modern cloths
they're much less scary than they look! definitely doing a bunch of mockups will help with the size, but once you've figured that out it's mostly just sewing it together like a normal garment, adding boning channels and grommets and thats about it!
really pretty, great craftsmanship, but still confused why the title has corset in it just for the correction later. I get it's for the algorithm, but you're losing respect with the non beginner sewing community.
