Film Riot focusing on a clear story, before overthinking visuals. Not that a short film has to have much of a “story” to it, but make sure the audience knows what’s going on through the pacing.
Do it now ...and don't waste your time in thinking....i mean don't over think...i done not much yet but I think that overthinking is the reason why I only manage to made two s.films only.
Thanks for the info on Frame.io I will be using that for the team now! Love your channel guys I've been following since (1903 When the first narrative film was made) and Revision3. Keep it up!
Feeding your cast and crew is the most underrated tip. My first short film, my co-producer (who had more experience) insisted we didn't need to feed people. I later found out she had to talk people out of walking out on me, and I don't know how much of that was because of me and how much was because they were hungry and tired and never got a lunch break. My second short I made sure to have all-you-can-eat snacks and meals and the vibe on set was awesome. Everyone was happy and getting along, and lunch breaks allowed cast and crew to talk and get to know each other better without the stress of working.
This, exactly. Especially if you’re the lead. It’s not every day you’re the lead of your own project (at least for me since I shot my film in a day). For sure treat your crew, since if you’re nonprofit, they’re there voluntarily being put through shit. I have some dope ass friends to be put through a 7 hour day out in the cold and rain. 40$ large supreme pizzas for everyone? Hell yeah, they deserve it.
Im working on a short film now, and Im using SO MANY techniques Ive learned on this channel. I try to apply one technique on each video I do on my channel that I learned here. Thank you guys!
Ryan is an absolute inspiration and is the reason why I decided to go forward and make my films. I'm not expecting glory, recognition, or even money. It's about passion which Ryan and his entire team have demonstrated through all these years. Thanks again brother for your transparency and "keeping it real!"
I love how open you are with your early work. Admitting that your villains don't quite look the part is super humbling to hear. My first short film was incredibly challenging for me and something that I feel a bit embarrassed about because I don't feel like I got it right. I cringe every time, but if I didn't do it, then I wouldn't have the wisdom to make the choices to avoid my previous mistakes. Great content, always love your work and advice 🙏
Ryan, you are my dad in film making. You give me the best advise and lead me in the right direction, you don't lie to me. You told me that, it won't always be easy, but will always be worth it. Thank you very much.
I’m working on a short film series and it’s going to consist of 7 episodes, I’ve been watching your channel since I started filmmaking (2012) and now I feel like I have the development and courage to make this happen, thank you for your style that has changed the perception of all aspiring filmmakers who tune in to Film Riot!
I wanted to make a movie featuring a tornado scene. I made a test scene using miniatures and a fake background, but it inspired me to make a full movie featuring a similar clip. I decided on making a fake background with a smoke machine to create the funnel cloud. I then would use a fan to make the rotating cloud. I then put that on green screen background footage of miniature houses being blown apart with a reverse vacuum cleaner.
Man, I've missed you guys. Been on a journey making music and working with audio for the past few years, so I'm glad to be back with the visuals(especially films & skits). Ryan, idk how you do it but you always make people feel welcome. It's almost like I'm watching y'all for the first time again, I love it 🖤
Giving it a day or two is THE best advice. I've lived with that as a rule unless it is absolutely not possible to do. It'll help you tackle problems quicker as well as realize something that felt like a big issue previously was mostly just dreamed up from your nit picking and viewing over and over hundreds of times.
Just wrapped on a short film today. Got hired as the BTS camera but I impressed the director and DP so much I ended up running a B CAM the second and third day. This was also the first short I worked on that had a Hollywood actor as the main it was very fun and I’m glad our whole cast and crew meshed so well together
It' honestly so sad to see that short movies dont get as much recognition as big movies. I personally feel like sometimes short movies can sometimes be way better than actual big movies. Judged by the cinematic photography, the actors, the editing, the story telling etc. Short movies deserve as much recognition as big movies.
@@henriqueeloy2193 so many big movies who were expensive to make, took long, a lot of people worked on yet some will never reach the same level as short movies
Absolutely agree about stepping away from editing for some time. That also applies for music composting, photo editing, and filming for me. Thank you for this walkthrough!
During my first year of film school (about to start second), we were filming a documentary, and my friend picked me up at like 8AM, and we basically we worked all day (with light breaks) without eating, in the middle of the countryside with little to nowhere to eat and didn’t eat until like 6:30-7:00PM. It wasn’t overly torturous but I really don’t recommend it. Kinda why I’m looking into food that doesn’t need to be refrigerated to take on shoots.
Ps. If anyone wants to check out things I’ve made just visit my channel and feel free. Currently in the middle of releasing the first 3 episodes of my new comedy web series!
I'm trying to practice movie effects for an extra practice, hoping it will help me in the future. I've practiced animation, video making, story making, shading and tracing pre-made art, a little bit of art/drawing, video game knowledge and play through, organization, music writing, singing, self-defense, reading, and photo editing and collage making. I have a lot of skills but I'm building on really small budget filmmaking and movie effects. I really think these skills will help me in the future. Considering I could mix all of these talents together to make something incredibly amazing and original or a takeoff of a classic. I really thank you and your friends for guiding me through the basics of budget film making.
Thanks for sharing and the useful tips! Just uploaded my own first short film, it was so much fun to produce and a great experience, you learn a lot in the process. Keep up the good work!
love your channel! i've been making my own short films using my niece and nephews as my small cast. i also film on my phone lol it's not much but it's a start.
Nodoubt these tips are really helpful. The problem is most tend to imagine that a film, long or short, must have violence, energy and one smart idea after another and an explosion or a gunboom at the end. That is not true. Life has many other conflicts which affect lives and drive them to the edge. Short films should not ape what Hollywood has done already but move away and still come up with great story telling and it always works.watch great masters, Ozu,Fellini, Bergman and see how stories are told quietly, each moment taking the story forward, emotionally drawing the audience in and then ending with a climax that proves the theme.
I just came from twitter. I don't know why but I feel like this is going to be a very good video. Brb when I get a snack for this video, hopefully its worth it!!!

Absolutely! Food was the reason my friends came over to shoot our film.😂
Especially for low budget films, food can genuinely make or break shoots
Omg obsly ut would be awful without food i always provide good feast after shoot and inbetween good snacks
Film Riot is literally the best Movie Making channel on RUclips!

How can I approach for short films to work..
How to make a short film :
1. Story idea
2. Script/setup
3. Cast
4. Shoot
5.edit
6. Upload
7. No views for beginners 😥😥
You forgot a Domain.com sponsorship
may not get many views, but it gets you practice! which is more important. Eventually you'll find an audience. Just keep grinding!
7. That's not true 😛
I mean, you got some viewers by yourself watching your own video 😂
true, but the art on film is when you enjoyed watching it for yourself.
Great timeline except #7 lmao even though it's true!
You guys really should be making movies to appear on the big screen; you guys are awesome!
