Film Riot has been there for me through thick and thin. I was 16 when I started watching it and now I'm 26. Time is crazy. You guys have made me laugh, educated me, and served as a real source of inspiration for me. I cannot thank you enough and I can't wait to make something I'm proud of enough to share with you guys. Thank you so much for all you do.

I'm 28 years old and I have been subscribed to this channel since I was 16. Since then I have made several short films, worked at several studios and have been a freelancer making commercials, music videos and even working on some (small) projects for Disney. Now I'm putting together my own Virtual Production studio to launch some very ambitious and exciting projects of my own making and MORE importantly I have a portfolio that I am very proud of and honestly it wouldn't have been possible if I hadn't found your channel and realized that all I needed to do was pick up a camera and start trying to figure things out. When people ask me where I learned it all I say Film Riot. Thank you Ryan.

Despite the usual high quality, this episode was outstanding. I think the technique of filmmaking is something that people at least have an idea of where to start - watch, shoot, edit, repeat - and there are numerous tutorials on lighting, editing, etc, but the business of filmmaking seems opaque and vague by comparison. There is no one clear path like other professions so people can be kind of directionless on how to progress beyond no-budget shorts. Videos like this one that shed more light on the "how-tos" of getting projects from script to production to exhibition/distribution are immensely clarifying. Loved the accounts from the other filmmakers and thanks to those guys for helping. Absolutely loved this one, Ryan.

I absolutely adore you! I've been watching Film Riot for soooo many years (like since I was a kid and I am 23 now) and has always been my main source of inspiration. I remember it as one of the first shows that I've watched, together with the old Indy Mogul one, around the first years of RUclips. Someone once planted the seed of creativity inside me and you along with a few others, are the ones that have been watering it for all these years. And now it has finally sprouted. I shot my first narrative videoclip in summer and I'm planning other film related things too. So, THANK YOU! I love your passion, your sense of humor, the way that you are so open about your whole process and the fact that you support and promote other creative people. A dream of mine is that one day I'll meet you and I genuinely hope that when I do, I will be in a position to help you with something or even better, collaborate with you. It's been such a beneficial experience watching your career grow and having you take us along with you. I'm about to turn 20 and working on my first short film I started filming in June. It's horror and I'm not expecting it to be perfect but I've learned so much to doing it and think I'll have great improvement with my next one (hopefully I'll film it this summer). Since I was 16 though, I've been making 2-3 minute short videos ranging from comedy to action to horror. Now I've been able to gather a crew from school and I'm also aloud to use the schools camera gears. Only using money for transport or food. At 24 I crowdfunded my first series, My Life as a Video Game to $32,000 - I put in another $10,000 of my own money after that. We only raised that kind of crazy levels of money because first of all, crowdfunding was still relatively new in 2012, and secondly because I had a co-star and friend Brent Black who at the time had around 150,000 RUclips Subscribers to his channel to show it off.
I had some personal issues after and, to be honest, it took me years before I went and made another short film, Parallel Sins, and a lot of the success in actually coming to life I owe to Ryan directly, which later lead to our next short film, inspired by Harry Potter called "Sisters of House Black". Because of Parallel Sins and I'd managed to prove myself to other producers and we were able to make Sisters of House Black on less than 1/4 of My Life as a Video Game's budget and we used a lot of resources from right here to make it.
"Sisters of House Black" hit *ONE MILLION VIEWS* last week in four months.
I owe a lot of the reason I have a success like that to my name because of my friends like Brent and like Ryan, and on our next film some companies we've now gotten the chance to work with because of SOHB and My Life as a Video Game's success. This video, Ryan, has basically shown me at nearly 32, just how I've actually managed to achieve what I've achieved in my life. So, thank you, this was a great one.

Man, this is/was so informative. As a solo everything (writer/director/camera operator/lighting/sound/editor) master of none zero budget filmmaker, I completely understand the frustration of making films with zero to little resources and help. But, can't stop doing what I love. I'm pretty much self taught and try and absorb like a dry sponge everything film making, and of course, your channel is right up there at the top of channels to watch/learn. I'm what you would say, an 18 yr old trapped in a 60 yr old body. And all my friends aren't interested or way too busy to give me a helping hand. I keep reaching out to people like on LinkedIn to try and connect. Nothing though. I'm not on Facebook but starting to think maybe I should be. Could be like minded people out there that want to, well you know. Make movies. Anyway, great channel, and I hope to be doing the things you're doing when I get older.

I would just like to take this moment to say THANK YOU FILM RIOT! I almost gave up on my dream of becoming a filmmaker because I'm miles away from the nearest film school and I can't even afford any gear. But it is because of your videos and other free resources I found online that made me pursue it. Surely I still have long way to go to be a great one but I probably didn't reach this point - where I can just make 3d animated shorts(or maybe even longer films) on my own, in my room, on a laptop -, if it weren't for guys like Ryan and other guys and gals who share free resources to help others not just learn but also have the means to make their own stuff. So yeah, THANK YOU FILM RIOT! :D

Only 18mins (seemed longer!) but boy did you pack in some brilliant information! For my money (!) the chap I can most concur with was the last guy. As he says, if you're doing things your way, in your time, you can reshoot again and again with DIY gear. Alas, not so with a 'commercial' shoot where everything has to be done to a tiemscale.
When I did an FX "film" film in the 70's, all effects were physical or in camera. Spot sound FX were created by playing reel to reel tapes / cassette tapes at various speeds, crunching cabbages, pulling sellotape off a worktop, twanging a knife ... and then all copied to perforated 3 1/4" tape, cut into sections, and then syncronised Super 8mm film via a flatbed editor! (Took about six weeks to edit) Then a second tape had music track, and all transferred in sync via a projector. Seems primitive to todays tech) I'd like to try it again using digital tech ... but Hitfilm and AE seem way too complex!
I've now built all my own jibs, shoulder jib, crane, light units (including 2x 4x55Watt kino style lamps) currently building a 3mtr x 6mtr greenscreen ... none of which I've ever used to date! I must get back into the filming world again

Thanks! Funding for shorts is not easy, but you just have to keep making shorts whether the money is coming or not. If it comes eventually, great. If not, enjoy being an artist and spending time with friends. We make a short film a month now, and I doubt we will ever make money from the films. We make them because it is part of who we are.

Ryan, I’m really surprised you have not done a full feature and pitched it to Netflix... Is this something you’re not interested in or is Netflix just too hard to get to like Hollywood?

I think of the great Writers/Directors of my time: George Romero (Night of the Living Dead), Wes Craven (Last House on the Left), David Lynch (Eraserhead), etc. You guys are going through the same things I'd suspect and just moving forward without discouragement. It's a great thing.

This was inspirational, hearing each success story and journey. Pumped to get back on narrative work. Time to dust off the journal with short film ideas.

I think lots of us would really love to see a detailed breakdown of actual budgeting on these projects. when someone says 'the budget here was 100k', I think it's hard for many people to actually understand where the money is going. So much these days can be done for so little with advances in tech and software and knowledge that's it would be really so useful to see a genuine breakdown .
