- How to create a document with multiple columns, with different column length, in Word 2010
Microsoft Word 2010 makes it very easy to create a document with more than one column. From the "Page Layout" tab, the "Page Setup" section you can click on columns and select the number of columns that you would like in your document.
Word 2010, however, will start filling your document as you type from the leftmost column, then the middle column and finally the right column, assuming your document has 2 columns.
What if you would like a different column length for each of your columns with, let's say, one paragraph of text in the first column, two paragraphs of text in the second column and four paragraphs of text in the fourth column?
In order to move text to a different column, from the "Page Layout" tab, the "Page Setup" section, click on "Breaks" and from the "Page Break" section click on "Column". This will insert a "Column break" and move the rest of your text to the next column.
You can move text from to any column that you would like in your document by repeating the same process. From the "Page Layout" tab, the "Page Setup" section, click on "Breaks" and from the "Page Break" section click on "Column" and you will be able to move text from one column to the next.
The same applies if you use a different column format, with a left or right column layout where your document will have one small left or right column and one large right or left column. You can move text from one column to the next, if for example you would simply like to include a short summary or a tip to the left column and your main text in the right column. Once again from the "Page Layout" tab, the "Page Setup" section, click on "Breaks" and from the "Page Break" section click on "Column" and the rest of your text will move to the next column and continue from the next column.

Thank you - very useful and helpful. I've wanted to do columns on a few occasions previously, but didn't because I didn't know how to properly. Don't know why I didn't look this up sooner!

Happy to help, you are welcome.
What is need to know in working with columns is, if there is a way to jump from the end of the first column right to the first column next page (not next column's first page ) so as to write straight downward. Same thing should happen with the second and third columns. Thanks.
How about doing the opposite? If I want the first column to go all the way down when there isnt enough text to fill the full page? Automatically my columns are the same length but i'd like the first one (left most) to go all the way down and the second one to end whenever the text ends. Is that doable?
That's the default Word behavior. First, it fills the leftmost column with your content, then it moves on to the next column. You must be doing something wrong, like inserting a page break when you shouldn't, if Word creates two columns of equal length, if your content is not long enough to fill both columns.
Now one more, 12 months, to be split in two six-column rows, (Jan-Jun / Jul-Dec), where the Jul column starts on the same page, under the Jan column, but, but, but, where the Jan-Jun columns may not all have the same number of rows, but where the Jul-Dec columns all have to start at the height of the longest of the Jan-Jun columns. Using a page-break after Jan-Jul, that's easy, but is it possible without page-break?
Sir ,is it possible to have separate pages containing different no. of columns...?
Viz; If i want to have one page with a single columb and another suppose, say pg 16 with 3 columns ,is that possible M
Hi. It actually is. You should just insert a next page section break (Layout Tab --> Breaks --->Next Page Section Break) before and after the page you would like to have multiple columns. In your example you would insert a next page section break at the end of page 15, then switch to a 3-column page format in page 16 and again insert a next page at the end of page 16, and then switch back to say a 1-column page format in page 17. I hope that helps. Good luck.
thanks
You are welcome.
Thank you for your video.
I have two text files, each about 25 pages. I want to put them in one file, two un-equal columns facing each other, as they correspond to each other. Also be able to edit page headers. How could I do it? Thanks
Hi. Unfortunately, i'm afraid the only way to achieve what you want is to do it manually, by coping and pasting text from both documents and inserting column breaks where appropriate. I hope it helps.
Thanks, but I have problems if my second column is longer than one page, I just cant separate them
Hi. Obviously if your text extends to the next page, the layout changes. I'm not even sure what you are trying to do, to be honest.
HI! Very useful tips and very clear explanations. Thanks.
Need help: I'm working on a page in which I want to put 3 Columns:
- Column 1 = 1 big table for z whole Column
- Column 2 & Column 3 have texts and 1 table which passes through the 2 last Columns
My Questions:
1- How can I create the 1st big table to fit the whole Column 1?
2- How can I Break to make my table passes through the 2 last Columns (Column 2 & 3) without breaking the 1st (Column 1) ?
I hope you understand and that you can help.
Hi. I don't really understand what you are trying to do here, but you can expand the table to fill the entire first column by dragging one of its corners (or one of its sides depending on how you want to expand it) while holding down the right button.
If you want another table that extends through two columns then use a two-column layout.
THANKS
your instuct might be good but your voice is not clear
Sorry about that.
