This is a very common problem on 3rd monteros with a pretty simple fix. Sometimes it’s a broken bushing, sometimes the inhibitor switch (aka neutral safety switch) on the transmission itself is getting gummed up, and sometimes it’s just the shifter cable that needs a little lubrication.
Here’s a video of how to disassemble the center console and inspect these 3 things.
If you need to replace the inhibitor switch, here's the one that fits these cars:

If the bushing is broken, here's a replacement that I've heard fits (cheaper than the OEM mitsu version):

I have the same problem with mine today the weird thing is when I was in drive it slipped out of driving to reverse in the middle of the street out of nowhere I don't know if you fixed your issue if anyone else has fixed the issue but I hope it's not a control sending unit problem I've also heard that having a low battery what is the cause transmission problems
Hi , i have a question how can you know if its the first part or second part the problem . Thanks you
