I was jump-judging a four-part combination fence at the Rolex four-star event in Lexington, Kentucky, in 2009 when Lucinda brought Headley Britannia through that combination. I don’t remember the number of the fence, but I do recall that it was more than halfway through the course. Here’s the way most horses did that obstacle: from the downhill galloping lane from Marks Lane into the polo field, they made a right-angle turn to the first element, a large upright fence, then took two strides downhill, jumped the second element by dropping down into a very deep revetted ditch, took one stride and jumped up the other side of the revetted ditch (the third element), then took one stride to a vertical fence placed at not quite but almost a 90° angle, which was the fourth element. It rode like a very tight gymnastic exercise, except that the horses saw very little of the surface of the final fence and pretty much jumped it blindly at a very severe angle. Here’s how Headley Britannia jumped the combination: she flew over the first element, then jumped down into the deep ditch, which was as high as her withers. Instead of jumping out of the revetted part of the ditch, she rocked back on her haunches and spun to the right and jumped up a very narrow strip of steep bank that was just inside the flag at the right side of the revet. She bounded up the steep dirt bank, then spun 90 degrees left, which gave her a much better approach to the fourth element vertical than the other competitors got. She took two short strides and bounded over that fence and took off like a deer. Brit was the only horse all day that tried this maneuver because she was small enough and handy enough to get out of the ditch in that fashion. She must’ve shaved seconds off the other horses’ times through that combination. It was an incredible bit of clever riding. It was obvious that Lucinda knew what her horse could and would do for her. On top of everything, it was a 90° humid April day at Rolex that year. It was run during a bona fide heat wave. It’s been years since it’s been that hot at Rolex Kentucky. Thank you, Lucinda, for bringing your wonderful horse across the pond to show us how it should be done. You gave everyone else a riding lesson that day. And you gave us jump judges a wonderful story to tell.
Thank you for your kind words. That was the first and last time I ever saw Headley Britannia, but it was a pretty amazing thing to watch. And she was so so much smaller than the other horses! Very memorable.
Some of the ways Lucinda described Brit made me think how similar Brit & Bear probably are. Neither of them were expecially flashy or had an amazing pedigree & it sounds like no-one ever really thought they'd go on to do anything remarkable. But they both proved all the doubters wrong & went on to be very talented mares. Definitely interested to see how much of Bear, Brit and Ron come out in the foal!
Me too Elessarion - with three such gorgeous horses - Granny Brit, Ron-the-Dad and Mummy Bear how can the foal be anything but perfect - whatever level he-she gets to! Seriously! NOT forgetting there will be some WELSH in him/her! CYMRU AM BYTH CARIADS!!
This series is getting good not only are we getting behind the scenes of a top eventer but we are also getting a look at Bears soon to be foals its dads side family history good luck for your event at the weekend and thank you for taking us along not only Bears but also Millys pregnancy journey and of course yours and Hobbits and the rest of the horses journey to
You controlled your inner fangirl VERY well. I, of course, was ear-to-ear just watching it. Lucinda is THE horsewoman we all aspire to be. Absolutely love her passion and love for the horse. Great video, Meg!
Went back to watch this, knowing Bear's foal is coming soon. What a lovely tribute to Headley Brittania and Lucinda. The great ones never leave your heart! I rode many naughty off the track thoroughbreds as an aspiring dressage rider and then one came along that stole my heart. Sounds pompous to say but he reminded me of Secretariat in looks. They say his racing career ended because he didn't like to run. I disagree because he loved his gallops and jumped beautifully but I suspect he didn't like to compete in that arena. For me, character counts and he was one in a million. Whether he was at a show, out hacking, or riding down city streets in the early dawn when snow and ice closed us off from the park and trails, we were a team. He always tried his best and took care of me. If I was younger, I know I'd move heaven and earth to buy one of Lucinda's horses from the Brittania line. I'm a big Headley B and Marley fan. Maybe in my next life 😊Good luck Megan with your new foals. So exciting!
Thanks for this interview, I always followed Lucinda and Brit loved the little mare with the big heart, you wont be disappointed with baby bear, i am sure of it. exiting times.
Wow... I'm crying... This story is incredible and her legend will definitely live on. What an incredible mare she was. Nothing will ever replace her legacy. Lovely video xx ❤
Won’t lie, I was super against getting a mare. Didn’t want a bay or a young horse because I didn’t think I was ready. I’m now a very proud horse mum of a beautiful bay, just turned seven year old mare! (I’ve had her five years)! Won’t lie I cried a bit hearing about her! You can hear and see how much she loved that horse ❤️
Meg and Lucinda thanks for making me cry dear me what a wonderful vlog this was so lovely Lucinda reliving your time with Brit. I’m so looking forward to seeing you all next time I hope Lucinda rides too been a long time since I watched her be fun too to see your daughter riding again she’s an amazing rider.tfs😎
Oh my goodness. What an incredible woman to look up to and what an incredible partnership she had with Brit! I started crying when she talked about unbuckling they bridal so as to not pull it over her ears for the last time... 😭❤️
I honestly just can’t. Lucinda was probably one of my biggest inspirations growing up and I remember the year this mare passed 😔 I never knew the full story to her but I’m so happy to hear it was just as sweet as I’d have imagined. The fact that she took the bridle off the same way all the way until the end has just got me. I know it’s such a small thing but as an owner who’s lost a horse before those little things you do just because of how the horse is really sticks in your memory as part of their character. I hope I get a wonder mare like Brit someday 😁
Thank you so much for this video. Lucinda is absolutely delightful, it’s such a joy to hear the heart filled story of a wonderful horse and rider team. I also adore mares, they may require a bit more negotiation but if you embrace who they are they will give their all for you. I’m looking forward to more stories!!
I needed this video today. I have been feeling in a slump and unmotivated. This story truly helped me feel like there is hope and to keep fighting. thank you both for being the amazing influential women you are!
What a wonderful video. Its had me smiling from ear to ear and crying at the same time. She was my all time favourite event horse and Lucinda is a truely wonderful person as are you Meg. Thank you for this truely heartfelt and heartwarming video ❤
Dear Meg, I think that Lucinda and I are of a similar age, although I do think I have a few years on her. I also took my driving test in a mini because I wasn’t wonderful at parking. What a lovely lady she is. A fabulous rider, so talented. I most certainly do remember her competing on the big circuits. Jane 😎👍🐎🐴🧑🏻🦰
Loved the interview with Lucinda! What a legend, and you really had a great connection with her. This series has been insightful, really enjoying it (but I love all your content!)
I'm definitely a mare person as well. And their story is a wonderful show that you don't need a perfect horse with royalty in their lineage to succeed, you need a sturdy horse with a good head and a strong heart and just give them time and patience and you will do just fine.
I've had the privilege of working at, then Rolex, now Land Rover Kentucky 3 Day Event almost since it's beginning. I have a picture of Bruce Davidson carrying around Buck as a toddler somewhere. It's always a thrill to watch and meet these wonderful riders. I was standing in the entrance to the Rolex arena cheering her on when Lucinda won!! You know Meg....Teddy O'Connor was only 14.2hh. We expect you to be here one day! You can stay with us. We're just 25 min down the road from the horse park. Heck come stay with us even if you're not going to ride. You can come as the Shires ambassador!!
I’ve been coming to the Kentucky three day event, whether it be called Rolex or Land Rover, for as long as you have, and it is the highlight of my year, too.

No offence meant, but if you can't afford to buy the horse you can't afford to keep it. That's where the real cost is. Maybe look into loaning opportunities or riding lessons or things like that in your area? It can be a much cheaper alternative until you have the money to support one properly.
@@Charbified I have been riding e years and I have a loan horse so I have a headcollar I have a farrier vet buckets and all that because the owner says that's part of the agreement so basically I won my own horse but I have to pay to keep him every week with she charges 100 pound so year that my reason and no affennce taken

And Megan is really coming into her own now too - especially since she's flown the nest and is setting her own home up! x ~ C ~

It’s sad that she was put down due to doing something she loved😔 but at least she will hopefully have a mini version of herself in Bear’s foal 😆
That had me crying when she spoke about taking off her bridle bit by bit even when she broke her leg 🥺🥺
