You guys have the most watchable/bingeable reaction channel for three key reasons:
1- you're both likeable and relatable, and you ain't fake.
2- you get straight to the music without boring people to death with long intros.
3- you keep your commentary brief and on point.
This is a brilliant strategy, so please don't ever try to fix what ain't broken.
The original, uncensored lyric is, "Jesus, won't you fucking whistle/Something but the past and done". The song is about the relationship between the addiction and the addict, whatever it may be.
I think it is actually "Jesus, won't you fucking whistle something more to pass the time" but I could be wrong.
I always thought it was "Jesus blows his fucking whistle."
@@matthensle9391 Nope. To appease mainstream censors, they made the video lyrics, "Jesus, won't you try to whistle". Maynard did a similar thing at the Reading Festival performance, but there he just repeated the Mother Mary line in it's place.

Since it was in the days of the early internet it was interesting having arguments over if Maynard said SUN or SON on BBSes. It's SON of course, but back then no lyrics in the CD or online. And complex and metamorphic lyrics using strange ideas, at the time, were hard to decipher. Great song.
That's pretty cool. Where I'm from they did not play tool on the radio back then. You either had it or you didn't. Thinking back there was only one place you ever heard tool if it wasn't your own and that was at a strip club and only song you'd ever hear was prison sex.

The guitar squelch at 5:12 is one of my very very very favorite moments in TOOL. The way Adam makes the literal sound feel likes its ripping apart against its fortitude. Fucking gnarly

This song is full of misheard lyrics for anyone not reading along. "Why can't we NOT be sober?" makes it more along the lines of someone who knows they are addicted, but kinda wants to stay that way.
Eek.. as long as we know he was talking shit about a friend with a habit. Someone didn't get that message, apparently...

@@seantimmons5900 Maynard owns a wine vineyard and struggled with alcohol addiction and drugs his whole life. The song is about how unfair it is that we have physical ramifications of drinking like liver and kidney and heart disease. Alcoholism is the devil. Everything that’s bad for us feels so good.
To me the song is about the drug or alcohol talking to the addict telling them just how much of a deceiver they are that’s just my opinion
You really need to check out the live version of this at Reading Festival in 1993. Never seen anything like it.

How I’ve had it explained to me by someone that knows the band said that the music was designed to make you feel uncomfortable. Mixed time signatures and such. It also changes prospective from the addicts prospective to the substance and back. The verse where it says “I will only complicate you, etc” is from the addictions prospective. I quit trying to figure out Tool songs as I’m just not insightful enough to get the meanings.. That’s why I like all these reaction videos as all the Tool Army experts come out to share.
The Grudge is also awesome. They are very deep with meaning. Takes many times to listen for it.
Probably my favorite Tool song, definitely the one that got me hooked.

You should still do the live version everyone reacts to. Then you could see Maynard’s stage presence, Adam just standing there making incredible sounds while Danny goes nuts on the drums. It’s old, and the bass player is different now, but whatever. It’s really good!
That video is old as shit with bad audio quality. It is not how they perform now and is irrelevant to anything more than seeing Maynard act weird and intense. I have been a tool fan since the mid 90’s and love this song as much as the rest of Tool’s playlist but people stop making them react to the worst live version of that song.
@@yeahright1972 I hear what you're saying and agree partly. However, that other video that way less people react to has equally horrendous sound but it's a watch I would recommend. Not everyone got to see these guys in a bar from ten feet away.

@@yeahright1972 not the greatest audio quality, but the most felt, as well as the best physical performance from Maynard. Point blank, and if you think there are so many better videos of them, why don't you post one in the comments? TOOL hates being recorded on phones, and that's one of the reasons Maynard stays in the back. That, as well as giving the rest of the band the limelight. Maynard hates the thought of being in the spotlight, OR regarded as some generic vocalist who is over listed and overranked, when he in fact deserves to be. I respect him for that, and if I was at a TOOL show, I'd be damned if I had any phone in my hand, if I even had one on me period.

In this episode of Brad & Lex, on the first day of 2022, Tool takes the two couch sitters on an ominous journey of emotions as the savage guitar riffs and pleading harmonies hit their heads driving Lex soberly into her "vibe bop" while Brad feels safe in the backseat initiating a slow "side to side sway".

Adam Jones designs most of Tool’s videos. He’s very visually artistic and used to work on special effects at a film studio. Sober is relatively straightforward for a Tool song. The battle within the mind of a substance abuser.
Definitely check out "The Grudge". Deep wisdom in the lyrics and they're more straightforward than most Tool Lyrics. Musically it's very chaotic but still great.
You got the safe for tv version of the song. Lyrics were edited for MTV to remove the swearing. The Jesus whistle line is actually "Jesus, won't you f**king whistle"

I’m 100% in favor of live versions… if the audio production quality is good enough. The live version of this song sucks huge donkey balls. Don’t get me wrong, it would have been awesome to be there in person, but it’s the worst version to tell someone to listen to for their first time.
I never heard this band before. Back in 93 94 when Columbia house had the get 10 free CDs or cassettes gimmick going on this was one of the choices I made to make my limit. Took a chance and glad I did. Still got the CD today.
Its the best show. Saw them in Vegas 07 at hard rock and during their 20min break we all cheered for them the whole break and they just sat there and ate it up they were going to leave and they turned around and sat on Dannys drum rise it was the best.

first of all... one of the best videos of all time... but also the into.. DAMN... and Lex immediately gets it...lol, I do love that you guys get into the lyrics... many reaction vids skip that aspect (not entirely) but you guys delve, thanks, music connects us all and these reaction vids make us all feel community with people we never met but seem to know if that makes sense....
This is about an old artist friend of theirs, trying to justify their addiction given he need it for his art, and rationalising its use as well as his realization of the path of self destruction he carries, a contradicting duality breaking one person apart

This was written in response to having to sack a band member for drugs/alcohol abuse. The tricky line in this song is "Why can't we NOT be sober?" Maynard never actually sings, "Why can't we be sober?" I believe the song is in both the addict's perspective, as well as from the perspective of addiction, as if it were a person.

It's about their late friend Bill Hicks, a comedian. He felt he couldn't perform or be as creative if he was sober.
I saw them on this tour before they really busted out. It was in a relatively small venue in Denver and it was AMAZING! Serious mosh pit and my first (and last) crowd surfing experience! Never got a real good look at Maynard though. Seemed like he was always in the shadows.
I dont know about underground with only a EP prior to Undertow. I would say its just a beginning song that was played on the radio. They take 4 yrs to put out albums so enough time to learn their music and want more.

Never caught this as a meaning before: "I will find a center in you, I will chew it up and leave" meaning dependency on a drug altering the balance of an energy center in the body, then leaving it in that state as it's flushed out of you. I bet there's a drug or 5 which correspond to each center/chakra/system

The first time I actually got high I was a tool. Maynard was in a bustier and thigh high high heel boots it was crazy. He used to be so fun but now he just stands in the back.

I've seen an interesting bit of video. Local access cable show. Maynard does a version of this with a band prior to Tool. You can see him trying to become who he is.
I got this CD from Columbia music for .99 cents I think. I was on Tool very early back when MTV was awesome. So glad to see you reacting to Tool. I haven't seen you react before. Ill have to look it up. Dont forget about A Perfect Circle and Pusifer for loads more of Maynard!
Maynard's mother was a holy roller. He could never understand why his mother was so religious - especially when she got sick. He wondered why her religion failed her and allowed her to get sick. If you want to see his take on this, look for the song by Perfect Circle called "Judith." Tool's music sound over and above the lyrics are enough to put you into a trance.
Get to see them on the 10th!! Pumped! You two should try Right in two OR Descending. Lyrics on hand are a good idea for Tool songs.
Tool feels the same way I do about sobriety: it sucks! I mean if something is ruining your life I guess you should shed it, but if you can use recreationally more power to you.

Always appreciate the daily uploads. I did have a question though, will you guys be doing any more modern metal? Seems like a lot of the stuff you do is classic rock and 90ish / early 2000ish.
The song is talking about a friend of the band who could only function while under the influence of drugs. The verses talk about the individuals problems while under the influence as well the conflict of being dependent on drugs and trying to get sober.
This is the correct answer.
