- I saw video by CARCYCLES on how to fix that stuck up or unsmooth shifting you get on the 1st and 2nd gear.
After testing it out, I find it to be a great hack and suggest you do the same on your G86 or BRZ.
Tools:
- Pry Tool
- Screw Driver
- 10mm Wrench
Optional:
- Masking Tape

Masks off whole interior except area he pries on. 😂 I dropped a like and subbed.
Hahaha! I was waiting for someone to comment something like this. 😅
Thanks for fhe support!
You do an excellent step by step video. Thanks.
Thanks for the feedback. Appreciate it very much.

I measured the gap at my 2023 brz, it was around 0.9mm that's probably the reason I messed up a couple upshifts from first to second, every single time I shift from 1st to second I had to really jam the stick into second so that it engages, I now adjusted the space to around 2.3mm it works like a dream it shifts super smoothly and no matter how hard I put it in reverse without lifting the locking ring It will not go into reverse by any means, this is by far the best mod I have ever done to my brz , thank you so much for making this kind of video I wish all brz/gr86 owners can see it and try it themselves it's life changing!!!
Thanks for the appreciation. Very happy to receive these comments. Will help the growth of the channel.
I think this is the first time I ever heard that the gap is less than 1mm.
when I shift it to 1st the gap between the stop and the locking ring can barely fit a credit later I measure the carrd being around .91 .92 mm. it's kind of crazy they only left thiis much gap in it@@39gjapan
Great video, thanks for sharing. 👍🏻
DUDE!!! i thought it was just me, thank you for putting this together
Makes a difference! 😁👍
I definitely needed this!
Thanks!! Your vid made this super easy, took me all of 5 minutes after watching this.
Appreciate it! 5mins is quick!
Just did this to my Brz and it’s fantastic huge thanks 🙏
Loving it! Best hack!
Thanks for the info!!
Always welcome!
Thank you for this... Mine actually needed to be adjusted the other direction, but this video helped figure that out!
OP is RHD so his reverse lockout is on left instead of right I guess haha
@@WallsAndFoundations may... Reverse lock out is on the left, regardless. I had to go the other direction to reduce the gap instead of increase it
@rhkean gotcha! I'm surprised it's on left even on LHD cars. Good to know, and glad you fixed your issue! 🫡
@@WallsAndFoundations yeah... I don't think anyone makes different clutch assemblies based on LHD or RHD locales, but I'm not certain, either
Just finished doing this in my car great diy guide. I also have the OEM short shifter 😍 so happy I'm liking it more than my 8th gen si transmission right now.
Glad this video was helpful!
Did you notice a big difference in shifts with the OEM short shifter? I read it’s only a 10% difference. Worth it?
@@adamscenna Nothing major but I'm perfectly content with the shifting and I wasn't beforehand 🙂
@@figur8out thx for the response. Appreciated
This is really interesting...
I actually will try this right away! I even had a popsicle stick laying around. Gonna get back on how it feels :)
Alright, the installation was a bit painfull because I didn't have the perfect Plastic-Prying-tool laying around. But I just used a fork wrapped in some tape...worked relatively okay.
I must say I feel that it's subjectively smoother.
There's one additional mod I did: I put a little bit of lube (205g0, yes I'm a mechanical keyboard enthousiast) on the side metal piece of the shifter and the little blocking thing. That way it'll rub less harshly when it eventually does hit the side and metal scrapes against metal.
Thank you a lot for the video!
Glad it helped you. Didn't think of the lube. Maybe will put some if I get a chance
excellent
I did this to my brand new car and man it was so much different now!
it was especially cluncky when cold and now it's smooth all the time. awesome video!
Awesome dude. Enjoy!
I am definitely doing this, this weekend
Cool, how did it go?
from all the comments it seems like a really simple and very nice adjustment that fixes a pretty common distaste with users. What i dont understand is why wouldnt it come off the factory line like this if all it takes is a tiny readjustment.
I was wondering the same as well.
I was told to start in 2nd....way better. Also weird everything is inverted for the US except the gears!
What do you mean by 2nd? Whenever you start driving from a full stop?
Does that 2mm gap also apply for the 1st Gen model cars as well? I’m trying to find some literature on that but can’t find any
I tried looking but couldn't find any info
Umm.. I see the point of having extra clearance in 1 & 2 shifting room. Any concern of putting reverse by accident?
The lockout is not removed and is still there, so no worries on putting it in reverse unless you pull up the lockout for reverse. Still the same.
Hope I answered your question.
Thanks for the comment.
On my BRZ, where you pried off that front piece, I have usb port & something else. Do I remove the same way?
I believe yes, otherwise you will not be able to remove the piece round the shifter.
Can this apply for the first generation such as the GT86 or BRZ?
I believe the lock-out design for the first gen is different. So the adjustment may be different.
On what year models is this useful for? I have a 2013 BRZ
This is actually only for 2022 and up
does that same measurement work for 2013-2021 brz frs 86?
I’m not so sure. First of all the lock put on the 13-21 is made different. Sorry I couldn’t answer your question.
Great video! Did you remove the helper spring on your clutch?
No, I actually haven’t..
@@39gjapan me neither. I’m tempted to try but I’d lose the C clip knowing me.
Liked and subscribed. I like your content 👍
@@MalteseNinja22 Appreciate it! Let us know what you wanna see for the future videos. 👍
If you ever do a break upgrade that would be awesome to see!
I do like the little touches you do as well. Like changing the interior and boot lights to LED. Have you changed the lights under the door? Would be cool to make it a coloured LED.
@@MalteseNinja22 Thanks for the suggestions. Will do those light installs soon.
About breaks tho, it is still off the budget so it’s gonna take a while..
I just did this recently, but when I downshift from 3rd to 2nd it seems to catch on the plastic. Should I make the gap tighter or looser?
It's very to advise something you don't see. Sorry.
Check the mechanical movement and adjust accordingly. Or maybe not related to this part of the shifter? Am not so sure.
@@39gjapan I think I just need to make the gap a little tighter. Pushing the lockout bracket tightly against the shifter lockout with the popsicle stick and then tightening the bolts was the fix! Having the lockout bracket to far out was having the shifter getting stuck against some sort of metal notch around 2nd. It just required some fine tuning. But awesome mod!
Same for leff hand drive ?
I believe yes, many have done it.
This is on the second gen car right?
Yes it is, first gen shifter lockout design is different.
@@39gjapan Thanks, I'm looking at getting one of these and if it had done that one the test drive it would have stopped me from getting it.
You did a 2nd gen test drive?
@@39gjapan no I'm doing that today. Just meant if I did encounter that on test drive not knowing what it was it would have put me off of the car.
@@jeremywatson9129 I see got you dude.
I don't understand why the eggheads at the factory couldn't have done this to begin with😒
Nothing to fix. It shifts perfectly in all gears. Is this a problem with RHD or something? I have a 23 BRZ and I autocross and I don't know what you guys are talking about!
Not really a problem, but just adding extra room for the shifter.
Bro, your interior is on backwards
Yes, beacuse I have a Right Hand Drive GR86. Cars are RHD here in Japan.
good step by step video but maybe drink a cup of coffee first or something before you shoot another one. you sound like you're getting ready to fall asleep
I voice over it during the edit. I know I dont do a good job.. 😅 Will do my best.
The content creator lives in Japan and English is likely not first language. I think they are doing an excellent job especially if ESL. I rather like their calm demeanor. Keep up the good work!
Thank you for your understanding amd support. Will continue to work on improvements
No need to be a cheerleader and make your voice sound full of energy. Be you, because it’s authentic and great. To me there is something relaxing about working on my own cars and your voice captures that energy. I wish you continued success in content creation.
