TIP #01: to better isolate the windscreen from the rear (where wind can blow into) I bought some cheap thick elastic hair bands from a dollar store... and wrapped to of them around the rear of the windscreen... they worked perfectly and now there is no bleed of wind from that area of the mic.
Glad I could help, but it is all dependent on how sensitive your ears are. I used to sell stereo equipment and people could not tell the difference between a $200 dollar and $1000 system. It is all subject to you, and I won't debate it but there is a difference. It may be undetectable to the untrained ear but there is a difference. As we say in retail "The customer is always RIGHT!!!"

Meaning: Binaural audio is a recording technique that uses two microphones to create a 3D stereo sound effect that mimics how humans naturally perceive sound. The goal is to make the listener feel like they are in the same room as the performers or instruments or sounds around them. This microphone allows you to adjust their angles to achieve the best spacial space that you want. If you have a Sony camera with the proper hot shoe it will automatically pair /connect with that device. So nice to know someone is as interested in proper sound capture as I am. 1. If you connect the ECM-XYST1M with the supplied cord to the mic input of the camera, you can make use of audio manual control (if the camera has that). Otherwise, working via the top connector only the audio is automatic gain control. Manual control of audio is defeated. 2. I have heard that if you plug in a mic into the exterenal "output" connector of the mic housing, the camera will use that mic rather than the built-in ones. Sounds unbelievable, but that is what is claimed. So, for the Sony cameras without a mic input (a6000), you can choose mics to use.
+markr041. You are correct about using the cable. On a Sony 6000 it will only work automatic mode. On the 6300 the Mic is in auto once you pop it 6300on the top. If you plug in the supplied cable you can use the Mic in manual. Thank you for reiterating for people so they will understand the concept better.

Hi RallyBurnZ2 look at your audio meters and run your fingernail across the microphone. If no meter do a brief recording and do the same thing and listen to it back. Hi Jeff, do you know if this microphone works as a standalone microphone by plugging the supplied cable into the mic-out and into another device like a computer's mic-in? Or does this microphone really need the Sony hotshoe for power to work?
That is a really interesting question. I would probably say it gets it's power off the hotshoe. It may work passively but I am not sure and I cannot test it because I had rented it with my gear and it was not returned, and I have not purchased another.
Thanks for the video, just ordered an open box from Amazon Warehouse for $85. I noticed my RX10M3 has zoom noise while recording. Wonder if this will help prevent the noticeable breathing in my recordings. Thanks for making the video. I had to jump back in forth between the spots in your video to compare side by side. Friendly suggestion would be to edit your video next time with the comparisons back to back. So you go directly from hearing built in mic, direct forward and 120 recording. Luckily youtube allows for mini video preview so I scrolled back to the three areas easily to compare more easily with less time between the different modes. Thanks for taking the time to make this.

I like it and the audio sounds fine to me. I really haven't tried many A/B comparisons of what way I have the mic setup. Between the new baby and work I haven't had much time to fiddle with the new camera hardware. I have left the mic on the camera 24/7 though as it does help with not recording in body noise and my breathing. I also found the mic works fine on my 4k Panasonic camcorder with included mic cable. I don't get alerts to youtube responses so sorry for the delayed response. Thanks again for the video.

Hi Lenard, If you just run it from the Hot Shoe on top of the camera by just popping it on the top it will only run on your A6300 in AGC. If you use the cord you can run the audio in manual. I hope this helps!!!
Yes, the SONY ECM-XYST1M EXTERNAL MICROPHONE is kind of an extension of your camera microphone in simple terms, but more sensitive and giving you the option of varying the receiving angle. Your internal microphone is buried inside the camera's case. It only allows sound to enter its capsule from the front, no real side lobes. The SONY ECM-XYST1M EXTERNAL MICROPHONE gives you the option to receive sound in a much freer environment and also gives you the opportunity to set the microphone spacing further apart to give you better stereo separation more like your ears as opposed to the sound coming into the 2 individual capsules in a parallel manner. The ECM-GZ1 is a shotgun/zoom microphone. It narrows the field of sound capture and focuses the sound in a smaller tighter area of pick up. It electronically changes the tube focus to appear to zoom in on the sound. It all depends on your application needs. Possibly you need one of each. They both have different uses and sound qualities. Honestly, I tried the Sony ECM-GZ1M, I was not impressed.
thanks I was thinking maybe the stereo XYS one for walking in the city and events, and then only for sports and zooming far away get the shotgun GZ1 to pick up sounds on the field, since i wont need to do interviews i really wouldnt need to use shotgun much
Chester Lee I don't believe the hot shoe connection will work as that is Sony proprietary but the mini cable should work if your camera has a stereo 3.5 mini input.
Yes it is. It will give you nice spatial separation and sound but don't forget to do a test first and peak at around -12db. You do not want to over saturate your cameras audio input. If you are unsure You can set the camera audio on auto. You have to accept one thing though, although it does sound good for an external camera Mic, it will not give you the results of 2 high end studio microphones properly placed and mixed. I purchased the Sony ECM GZ1M and tested it out on my A6300. The test was a bust. I don't know if the mic was bad or it did not work properly with my A6300 but I just returned it. I have watched other videos that test the mic. I think you need to adjust your speakers or sound card. Possibly you are listening in mono. Read the other comments. Possibly they are all wrong and you are right🤪
Is anyone here in comments section has ECM-XYST1M and a voltmeter? Would be so great if you can measure the resistance between: pin 1 and 7, pin 2 and 7, pin 3 and 7. Thank you in advance.
If you feel you want good stereo separation you might want to own this. It all depends on your recording wants, needs and specifications. Some people are happy with a 20 dollar shotgun microphone, others might spend thousands. It all depends what you need for quality in a microphone.
5:40 - native mic on camera
8:10 - 0 Degrees Sony mic
9:56 - 120 degrees Sony mic

You can plug in a mic, according to what I have read, with a standard stereo plug. But I am not sure whether the plug supplies "plug-in" power.

Sorry, it has taken me so long to respond. The Mic will only work in AUTO on the a6000 and it is powered by the internal battery of the camera.

I am almost sure most are standard size so ir should fit. It just may not be compatible electronically.

I heard some more distortion when you speak up when it's at 120 degrees.. Doesn't seem that good? :S
Hearing can be subjective depending on amplification and speakers. Also realize it was outdoors and if you listen it was a pretty windy day.
So you don't need to plug the wire that comes with it if you have the Sony a6300?

can you tell me what the difference is between the stereo mic or the zoom mic? ecm-xys1m vs ecm-gz1m, and im using the sony ax700
Yes, the SONY ECM-XYST1M EXTERNAL MICROPHONE is kind of an extension of your camera microphone in simple terms, but more sensitive and giving you the option of varying the receiving angle. Your internal microphone is buried inside the camera's case. It only allows sound to enter its capsule from the front, no real side lobes. The SONY ECM-XYST1M EXTERNAL MICROPHONE gives you the option to receive sound in a much freer environment and also gives you the opportunity to set the microphone spacing further apart to give you better stereo separation more like your ears as opposed to the sound coming into the 2 individual capsules in a parallel manner.
The ECM-GZ1 is a shotgun/zoom microphone. It narrows the field of sound capture and focuses the sound in a smaller tighter area of pick up. It electronically changes the tube focus to appear to zoom in on the sound.

It all depends on your application needs. Possibly you need one of each. They both have different uses and sound qualities. Honestly, I tried the Sony ECM-GZ1M, I was not impressed.
thanks I was thinking maybe the stereo XYS one for walking in the city and events, and then only for sports and zooming far away get the shotgun GZ1 to pick up sounds on the field, since i wont need to do interviews i really wouldnt need to use shotgun much

Can the microphone be used in the other camera. e.g. panasonic, canon....?
Chester Lee I don't believe the hot shoe connection will work as that is Sony proprietary but the mini cable should work if your camera has a stereo 3.5 mini input.

Hello guys, is this mic good for live music recording?
Yes it is. It will give you nice spatial separation and sound but don't forget to do a test first and peak at around -12db. You do not want to over saturate your cameras audio input. If you are unsure You can set the camera audio on auto.
You have to accept one thing though, although it does sound good for an external camera Mic, it will not give you the results of 2 high end studio microphones properly placed and mixed.

whats this like compared to the newer sony shotgun mic
I purchased the Sony ECM GZ1M and tested it out on my A6300. The test was a bust. I don't know if the mic was bad or it did not work properly with my A6300 but I just returned it. I have watched other videos that test the mic. Didn't think the mic came with a deadcat. Been wanting to get a XYST1M for my older HX50V.

I agree 100%. It was also successful but it isn’t a true shotgun mic but an excellent stereo mic.
It sounds like an improvement but not as big a difference as I'd expect from internal mic to that external dedicated mic from Sony.
It does make a difference in the spaciality of the sound when the microphones are split maximum distance apart.

The mic will only give you an external microphone in auto gain mode. Read other peoples comments below please.
there is barely any difference. I think you're not recording with the new mic, but with the onboard camera
I think you need to adjust your speakers or sound card. Possibly you are listening in mono. Read the other comments. Possibly they are all wrong and you are right🤪

If you feel you want good stereo separation you might want to own this. It all depends on your recording wants, needs and specifications. Some people are happy with a 20 dollar shotgun microphone, others might spend thousands. It all depends what you need for quality in a microphone.
