I know, haha, it was quite the experience really.. quietly pooping myself (and rather confused) after it happened, but as soon as John managed to free the line, boy, what a sigh of relief!!! The lows make the highs, feel unreal!

Sorry guys, an over-wind on a winch is a 2 minute job to resolve with the right know how. I've been sailing for over 40 years and done this multiple times. It's nothing to be embarrassed about. These things happen. What is important is knowing how to resolve the issue.

    • @KristinasTravels

You’re right, it was pretty stressful in that busy bay though with so many expensive boats around. It really caught us off guard, and took me completely by surprise. We only started sailing around 3 years ago, on and off, and this is the first time for me/ and us! So grateful we now have this knowledge. You’re so right, knowledge is key in this situation. I can’t believe we were’t taught how to get out of this mess during our RYA competent course actually… maybe they do in Day Skipper? I’m not sure..
Grateful it’s happened now though, so we can be better prepared for next time. And hopefully, we can get it sorted in 2 minutes 🤣🙂 It’s nice you say that actually, because in my head I amounted it to be this big mistake… thanks for making me feel better 🥰

@@KristinasTravels Considering you guys have only been sailing for 3 years, you've done remarkably well. The rolling hitch has to be one of the most useful knots and an important one to have in your tool kit. I don't know why these techniques are knot (excuse the pun) taught in sailing schools. I only became aware of it when I started racing keel-boats and over-winds were a common occurrence. Love your channel. Gained some really useful knowledge prior to my trip around the Greek Ionian Islands this past summer. Calm seas and fair winds. See you on the water.

I was in a race a few weeks ago. Had the same issues with the sheet overlapping itself on the winch, on the last tack before the finish. Out of urgency, I stood over the winch and pulled up. Ended up pulling the entire winch assembly off the boat and lost the winch in the lake. Happens to the best of us.

An overriding turn is done very easily when not concentrating for a moment. It happens all the time so you don't need to be overly ashamed, just a little bit lol. John did alright in what he was doing it is the preferred method. Maybe you could have put the loose end on the next winch and turn the boat into the wind iot loose the sheet's tension and haul the locked turn out. Depending on the situation that sometimes needs to be repeated until the sheet is free. It is hard on the sheet's material though.
My wife and I have been there 27 years ago. The water front hasn't almost changed at all but the yachts are now three times bigger and all the hills have been way less plastered with houses back then.

Overrides happen, tension on sheet/ angle you are pulling the line off winch will cause them
Icicle Hitch, is better for taking tension on a line, also for changing winches etc... will slide on working line until you put it under tension and wont bind (you can actually untie it) alternatively get a floating jammer and do the same thing

Secondly, the jib sheet being over ridden doesn’t prevent you from dropping the sail. You could’ve always just lowered the jib halyard instead of rolling it in. So yeah not the drama you describe. Cmon you don’t need to exaggerate the situations.

    • @KristinasTravels
      @KristinasTravels  2 месяца назад

I'm not sure how long you've been following us Rodent, but we have never been in this situation before, we've never been to this anchorage/bay, there are expensive boats all around us in St Tropez, John is essentially single handed sailing/motoring (fyi Kelly only has her competent crew course before joining us on this trip), and John and I only have (all up) around 10 months sailing experience on a boat. We didn't grow up on boats, in fact we learnt how to sail during covid. So this for us is not drama, this is real life. We are learning along the way and this was again, as I mentioned earlier, a situation we have never been in. It was a learning curve and I'm grateful it happened, as now we have another little notch of experience in our belts :)

For the Q&A: Are you guys (mainly Kristina since she is the lead narrator of the channel) genuinely 'shocked'/surprised with people sunbathing or sailing in the nude? If there is something which is dead normal on sailboats (especially in the Med) it's nudity. Could very well be you guys are playing a role here (and make a fuss about something that doesn't have to be) to fit better to a puritan audience but it really doesn't make much sense to me and isn't very believable either. I mean, Kristina you must have seen some of the world with your background as a reporter I reckon and John for sure with flying all over the world. Nudity is not similar to what people do in private in the bedroom, nor what adult tv plays. That nudity doesn't mix with RUclips is a whole different story and that is something I can understand (you guys being in compliance with ToS to keep monetization, not those ToS themselves as they don't make much sense imho but whatever) same goes with recording people who are minding their own business (nude) that is a big no. But sailing/being on a boat nude, there is not much better than it to be fair. Can you guys be honest and confess to have never done that? You are missing out :)

Loosen the halyard and it’ll give you the slack you need to get the line off the winch!

nice to see a young and down to earth couple traveling the world with a sensible attitude. funny how women always want to talk about it whereas men are problem solvers and just want to get on with it.

I haven't watched this episode but did you guys really manage to stretch content shot over a couple weeks summer '23 to this point late summer '24? I thought you guys would be on and off a boat for couple months in sync with John working his job on and off? I.E. when are you guys sailing again (not with this 55), or is RUclips extremely behind on your real time life? It's just confusing tbh.

That is the real sailing. Strong wind, sea spray etc. Lolibobing in marinas...meh. Get out and meet the wind.

Hey, why do you say you’re sailing at the beginning of the video when you’re actually motoring? So annoying. You should only say you’re sailing if you have sails hoisted and the engine off. Thank you!

Hey there, we have the staysail out :) but before we started filming we have the genoa, but had to furl it away and bring out the staysail, which you can see in the video
