  • The Anton class is what the Reliant in Star Trek 2, The Wrath of Khan, looked like during the original Star Trek series before the TMP era refit! This is a retro FASA game design from the 80's!

      Yes, miss those designs and the late nights.
      My god, my brother came up behind me in a Miranda , I had my D7M 'Night Fang'' beat to crap but I had one photon.
      Our friend kept telling him 'hold back, hold back" But not my brother. He was going to show me a lesson.
      I let loose before he crawled up on my S vents.
      One photon and it hit critical. He rolled for photons exploding internally. 27 in all.
      I crept away to fight another day.

    Always liked the Anton. Proportionally impossible for it to have turned into the Reliant/Miranda class. But that's also true of the Constitution and the refit/Enterprise class. The dimensions don't work.

    • @mrsamaritan6881
      @mrsamaritan6881 2 года назад

      Not just proportionally impossible but even in what lore there is, the Anton-class isn't the Miranda-class. Ship classes don't change their name when they under go a refit. The Constitution-class is still the Constitution-class after the refit. If the Anton-class were to under go a refit, it would still be the Anton-class. What is meant by "precursor" is that this design lead to the TOS-era Miranda-class that then became the refit/Miranda-class for the Wrath of Khan.

    Never had anything to do with FASA but loved these style ships as I used to play the turn based game “VGA Planets” which used the FASA style ships for the federation, including the single nacelle destroyer & the three nacelled dreadnought - loved mixing the Star Trek universe with the Star Wars and Battlestar Galactica universe all together.

    • @xheralt
      @xheralt 5 лет назад +3

      Do you play Squadron Strike? I'll bet you'd love it. Ken Burnside, the game's creator, often uses an assortment of SFB ships versus a new-type Cylon Basestar as a convention demo. SS is similar to SFB in style, except that it incorporates altitude tracking and true 3D movement...in a way that is actually _playable,_ and turns frequently play out faster than SFB. Having played SFB back in the 90's, I can honestly say so.

    • @xheralt
      @xheralt 5 лет назад +2

      Squadron Strike also accounts for "Cinematic" movement style (Trek, especially TOS, Star Wars) versus "Realistic" (New BSG, Babylon 5) style, _and can have both coexist on the same playing field_ (hence the demo above). If you want absolute realism, in a setting evolved more out of "2001: A Space Odyssey", there's a whole separate game for that, Advance Vector: Tactical. In that game, you get more nimble as you burn fuel and thus lose weight.

    • @doemacmonkey
      @doemacmonkey 5 лет назад +1

      @@xheralt I haven't - but from what you've said I'm intrigued - will check it out. I sort of slipped out of the tactical phase into more of a simulator phase - frontier elite, freelancer, wing commander etc. and onto hardcore realism with things like Orbiter (before you ask, no I haven't tried Kerbal, and know that I should) Ive considered Star Citizen - but hesitated because, firstly it would melt my current PC, and secondly Ive become increasingly concerned that it will never arrive.

    Something that most supporters of FASA's Star Trek works tend for forget, or simply may not be aware of, is that quite a few of these 'basic' and 'early' designs actually predate FASA's outstanding works. When I was a kid a friend of mine's brother had a copy of the following:
    The Star Trek Star Fleet Technical Manual is a fiction reference book by Franz Joseph Schnaubelt, about the workings of Starfleet, a military, exploratory, and diplomatic organization featured in the television series Star Trek. Wikipedia
    Then in the early 80's I was able to pick up a later published version of the same book which contains a section on Starfleet books, mentions of both the Romulan and Klingon/Federation wars as well as dress codes, sketches of uniforms, insignia, the break down on the workings of both Star Fleet and the Federation. It is my belief that FASA's writers and creators (or at least some of them) were aware of this work and made use of it as a reference.

    If you examine photos of the Reliant and Enterprise-A studio models, its role is very different from how FASA painted the type. It's the battleship of its era with as many phaser mounts as the Enterprise-A, but with smaller blind spots and four of which may be heavier; smaller shield surface area covered by apparently the same power plant; and a smaller moment of rotational inertia with the same impulse deck. It has sacrificed warp geometry to be the best optimized sublight battleship for its tech that the Federation fielded on-screen until the anti-Borg designs.

      The word "canon" implies a thing is sacred, inviolate, immutable, the highest law from the highest authority, always cherished and revered, never challenged or disobeyed.
      Most fans seem to passionately embrace this definition. But CBS has made it abundantly clear that Star Trek is a "property" and they "own" it. And that they have little regard for existing canon or continuity (or for the fans who respect it). So I view "canon" as a euphemism for "we do whatever we want, we make the money, and you buy what we sell". But it's not a one-sided relationship so to my mind the _USS Ares_ is "canon" and the _USS Discovery_ is not (it's only another bad starship from a high-budget "fan" film).

    Actually, enterprise doesn’t necessarily contradict FASA. In enterprise, they use phase cannons and photonic torpedoes

      More accurate to say Ares class is the Axanar version of the Anton class.

    I think it would be cool if you took a crack at the Leif Ericson. It was designed by Matt Jefferies for the AMT plastic model kit company. You can find everything about it, including blueprints, at: www.projectrho.com/SSC/model.html
    It had a "conning tower" very similar to that of the DY-100 seen in Star Trek TOS: "Space Seed" (Khan's sleeper ship). It also included a nifty shuttle inside a shuttle bay whose doors could open.
    It was intended to be the first of many in what would have been its own "Strategic Space Command" universe, but sales never justified any more designs. Jefferies did make some sketches of additional ones.
    The first model release included background on the SSC universe and a short story called, "The Adventures of Midshipman Lance Scott": frank.bol.ucla.edu/lestory.htm
    Even weirder was an included PAPER record called, "The Sounds of Outer Space." Somebody has it in MP3 format, unsurprisingly: frank.bol.ucla.edu/LE/SoundsOfSpace.mp3
    Interesting Notes:
    - Doug Drexler used it as the basis for the SS Conestoga seen in ENT: "Terra Nova."
    - Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle used it as the basis for ships in their novel The Mote In God's Eye.
    - "Six Degrees of Star Trek": Larry Niven wrote the ST:TAS episode "The Slaver Weapon" (which was adapted from his Known Space short story "The Soft Weapon"). And of course, it was designed by Matt Jefferies who designed the TOS Enterprise.

    So, while we're being noncanonical, it sounds like you're putting the _Antons_ into the same niche as the "Prelude to Axanar" _Ares_ class, i.e. direct response to D7. So _Antons_ (or _Ares_ if you prefer) match the D7, _Connies_ exceed it? _Ares_ class seems to have less "secondary" hull space, but they also don't have two shuttle decks, and _Antons_ are capable of more varied mission profiles. The Anton/Miranda seems to be a "frigate" in the British sense, a ship meant to transport large numbers of ground troops, space easily convertible to other puposes (like Reliant's science-profile mission)

      I always grit my teeth when unibody Fed ships are referred to as having "primary" and "secondary" hulls. If it's all together as a single structural body, and not seperable, it's just "the hull", period! But that's just a personal pet peeve.

      Yup, the connies outclass at least the older D-7's but there's not enough of them. The Anton's match them. I suspect it was the Antons that inspired the Ares, not the other way around. A lot of people think that the Prelude to Axanar content was an original idea, it is not. THIS is. :P

      Prelude to Axanar described the Ares as a leapfrog of the D-6... not to be technical or anything...

    Not too dissimilar from the Ares Class from Axanar. By the time of the first Constitution Refits, the Miranda proved to be far superior to the Constitutions. They were far more maneuverable at sublight and were far more heavily armed. Khan realized this when he commandeered the Reliant. However, Khan's arrogance and overconfidence were his own undoing. With a severely damaged and partially disabled Constitution Class ship, Kirk's own experience, his cunning and his mental discipline were more than a match for Khan's "superior intellect".
    Of course, the day was saved by Spock's quick thinking and self sacrifice!

    I never understood why FASA felt the need to create a Miranda class predecessor for the Four Years War era. The Wrath of Khan novelization states that Reliant is an elderly ship so why not use her sister ships rather then a predecessor design?
