She sounds and resembles in spirit the great grandma to the Defiant.
In a way yes :)
I would have loved to command one of those ships they were purfect for fast attack ships which starfleet needed i know we always were shown the connies but people needed to know they were not the only ship out there there was more ships little ships that did big things to protect the federation doing jobs that needed to be done that a connie was just not avalible for but a small fast archer ship could handle. thanks for showing one of the little workhorses of the Fleet i do enjoy it when you show these forgotten ships =)
There's certainly an unexpected charm to this little scrapper ;)
a tough little ship.
Little?!
"I will admit, the Archer class, ran circles around our better armed ships, biting at our ships and hulls like flies in a swamp" Romulan ambassador visiting Triangulum Studios
Right from the Denebian Slime Devils Mouth ;)
@@TriAngulumStudiosAudioComics Giggles😝😝😂😂😜😜
“But…” *a smile grows on his face* “as you do with flies we swatted them away”
Very cool! I imagine that Worf would have freaked out with the informality of the officers and crew of one of these older ships.
I would imagine so as well ;) :P He would have been happy with living on one though ;)
@@TriAngulumStudiosAudioComics - With that, he would have been thrilled! Well, as much as he believes a Klingon should be thrilled, that is.
LOL :)
Love it. I think the mission profile of the Archer would always be relevant, and should be seen in all of star treck with new models to fit that era.
Unfortunately, Roddenberry did not think that way...
@@TriAngulumStudiosAudioComics indeed
Hello Triangulum.
The Archer Class is a fine little star ship. For its day, it was a very good ship and worked well when deployed in numbers. Three such ships could 'bracket' a larger ship and maneuver around it, always keeping it in the center of a 'kill zone' where they could attack the larger ship from all sides, while their fast and effective maneuvers would 'mostly' keep the larger ship from doing any real damage to its attackers.
This is not a 'pie in the sky' kind of thing. Look at the times when the Constitution Class Enterprise was 'bracketed' by three Klingon ships, and the danger that the ship was in due to such bracketing.
With even more Archers, the 'swarm' could eventually take down even the largest and most powerful of ships they could encounter. Or, at the least, give it pause enough and do enough damage that the swarm could withdraw effectively to lay another trap, or escape completely from the larger, slower vessel.
If you need the visual referent, consider several red army ants up against one of the (to them) giant black warrior ants. Yes, the Warrior could kill a few reds, but eventually the reds would prevail and destroy the Black.
As for build times and resources... Other than the Dilithium Crystals needed for so many ships, the rest of the components would be quite easy and quickly constructed for such a small Class of ship. And thus, the ability to build truly large numbers of them would only be limited by how many relatively small Warp Cores and nacelles one could build in a given time frame.
If the Archer Class had remained in production for 30 years, Star Fleet could have had thousands of them available for use across the Federation. Not that they needed so many, but it's like making PT Boats for the US Navy in WWII... fast, cheap, reliable, powerful, and useful. Easily repaired and refitted, and never really all that far from a supply base.
One of the best chain of books in the Star Trek series.
Its a great series :)
I'd love to own one as a personal civilian ship, akin to the Millennium Falcon but dealing with more legal stuff. Okay, maybe I'd do some cargo runs to aquire some Romulan Ale, but that's all.
Ketracel white? Jem Hadar drug! 🖖
@@kenet71 I honestly don't know which would be more addictive/lethal.
I think there's an accidental hidden implication of Star Trek: Everywhere is dangerous, it's just easier to mitigate the dangers you know about.
Also I think it'd be kind of a shame if they didn't name at least one of the Defiants after this.
What a cool little ship. Kinda like an old school Defiant class built for running and gunning. Great video as usual looking forward to the next one!
This is like a small corvette compared to a battleship and I love it
I think its very appropriate that the named a fast, adaptable scout that encourages and informal command style is named after Archer.
Give Archer some love baby.
PS
Thank you Phasa and Vangard.
Papa TAS giving us our weekly XMAS presents.
Ho Ho Ho!
I probably haven't commented on your channel for a little while but I love how relaxing your videos are. I love the gaps that these kinds of videos fill. Some of the bigger ships are really beautiful too and have some great lore around them. But there's sometimes a 'go big or go home' attitude when it comes to Starships. Small ships like these, Sabre and Nova class' would fill vital and underappreciated roles within the fleet. They would require a different kind of crew and mindset. More like a Submarine than most larger Starships. Thanks for the constant Vids.
Named after the world's best spy, Sterling "Dutchess" Archer
"Let's Fly into the _Danger Zone!_ "
"Phrashing.... What? We're not doing phrasing anymore?"
so Dr. Sam Beckett's host got an class named after him eh. Neat
Huh. I always thought it was *Sterling Maxwell Archer.*
@@cinemagraphic6324 Dutchess was his code name given to him by his mom.
Showcasing the FASA ships is always fun to see
The crew arrangement with the ship being permanently stationed at a Starbase or Deep Space station like K-7 sounds like it's future descendent the Defiant class. A "escort" ship assigned to defend a outpost when the Runabouts just will not cut it. The only difference is that the USS Sisko's pimp hand never had a permanent captain residing since sisko was also station commander, it wasn't until Worf moved to DS9 that oversight was fixed.
The Archer Class seems to be the equivalent of a W.W.2 P.T. Boat. Small, maneuverable attack craft used to defend a forward location. Best used in swarm tactics against larger opponents.
More like a W.W.2 destroyer. Think of the Fletcher class destroyers: small, fast, easy to build, and packing a punch.
It was a horrible ship.
Yeah Buddy, the best ship in the Fleet! I actually had to take a break from work to "Watch" this one. Thanks, Man. That was good.
I always loved this design when I first saw it on the cover of the Vanguard novels. Really cool, compact design that fits the era perfectly. Thanks for creating this background story for the class!
Ditto. :)
The size and design make me think of the Protostar.
Awesome, one of your best yet!! Bravo! Great little terrier of a ship.
I love this plucky little ship:)
I love the Archer class, from the Star Trek: Vanguard novels. It's like a Fed PF in Star Fleet Battles.
My absolute favourite ship!!!
It would make a great space RV for a 24th century family that likes getting out and seeing the milky way.
Thank you. I love this little ship.
Great video friend i so happy every time you put a video Star Trek Forever 🖖
I imagine that the crew of an Archer-class would be a tightly micro-community, informal like you said, with friendships forming quickly. Romantic liaisons might be awkward, though. Planetary landings look so easy that I suspect that the transporter, aside from ship-to-ship use, would not get much activity. I wouldn't mind serving on one at all. 🖖😎👍
That's pretty cool
Indeed :)
@@TriAngulumStudiosAudioComics It is a pretty cute TOS era ship at that.
Which TOS ship would you command and why?
Is like a mini Defiant, small but with a big stinger
Exactly, especially with a similar function for DS9!
Did not know Archer 🏹 was Federation President as well. Thank you for the info 😊 🖖
A nifty little design
Absolutely!
VERY COOL summation!
I truly enjoy the information about the ships that you examine and explain two of my favorite classes are the Intrepid Archer class and the defying I don't know I have a thing for the small but yet powerful ships I would love to see the Archer class ships in action they need to bring these ships back and a new but old retrofit and keep them the same size that they were when they came out since they have new technology I think these bad boys would definitely be a game changer if it was up to me I would take the Intrepid the Arctic class and the defiant and make and make my own personal attack Squadron of these three different types of ships and call them the Wolverines Squadron of course I would be a separate independent but still have some relations to section 33 I mean come on let's keep it real section 33 is badass
I love the ship! I wish some fan would build a set.
To what end?
@@TriAngulumStudiosAudioComics set or 3D model of the interior. I guess fan films are kinda dead in the water. But I'd really like to see this ship.
Ahhh got it :)
Great video! I was not aware of this class of ship. I love the background information as well. Well done sir!
I so want to see a Refit Archer class, something that’s supposed to be the Federation equivalent of a Bird of prey, a small raider/scout
Its like a precursor to the Intrepid Class in TNG & DS9!
More like a Runabout.
Love this class.
This ship is new to me. Sounds like a very good idea of a ship, hunt in packs, protect star bases, e.t.c.
Try and read the Star Trek Vanguard novels. This is their Hero ship and the first and I believe only use if it in Star Trek media
Like the video says, it was also in FASA before the Vanguard novels...
I would love to see the kestrel from starfleet museum.. it reminds me of an early defiant pre tos type.
thank you very much for this nice Video. Like the Archer Class. Tough little ship
Awesome episode on an awesome ship. Lots of hugs from me! 🤗
Great video! Man, I would love to see the interiors of these stardust inspired ships!
I hope you’ll eventually do backstories on fan-made TOS style shuttles. A couple of them are simply brilliant & beautiful.
Coming up on the 50,000, my man! I've got a couple friends (Trekkies and FASA fans) who thanked me for recommending your channel! Spreding the love!
I have always loved the ARCHER design though her landing gear was usually retracted when not planning on landing.
I love this ship, its so cool how small it is. I want more of them.
I’ve always liked the small scout classes. Something about them just radiates space exploration. One of my favorite ships right now is the Equinox Class from Star Trek Online. Its the replacement for the Nova Class/Rhode Island. I can see myself preferring to cruise through systems finding the unknown and landing on Alien worlds over cruiser engagements and diplomacy. Yup I’m signing up tomorrow.
its a neat little ship, and definitly fills a role that not many ships could do that well (short range defense for starsystems and patrol) and its also a nice looking ship considering we dont have that many designs that go all the way back to the TOS era ^^
It serves a niche that Starfleet should _always_ have filled.
And the Defiant class can sort of be seen as it's spiritual successor, although the Jem Hidar Bug ship also fills a similar role, as do some sizes of the Klingon Bird of Prey.
If Starfleet had kept that niche up to date during different eras, so that there were Excelsior and then Ambassador and Project Galaxy versions, and then Sovereign style versions… well then the Federation would have been a lot tougher for a small investment in resources.
The Border Wars [imagine these in the Badlands] may have ended in a _total victory_ for the Federation instead of a stalemate if there were Project Galaxy (or even Ambassador era) Attack ships, or should that be _Patrol ships_ in order to be "diplomatic"?
It also makes life very hard for pirates and raiders as a bonus, hence Patrol ships. Escort duties for capital ships also seems cut out for them, a few assigned to each Main ship of the line (Whatever the Enterprise would be) would make sense, crews can use the more extensive facilities of the hero ship and even rotate on and off.
And being able to land is also a useful, they can be kept hidden in underground hangers or otherwise concealed on Frontier Worlds and Colonies, which also might not have orbital facilities. Even previous generation ships would still prevent opportunist (*cough Ferengi, cough) from trying something.
The other huge advantage, if there is a War they are far quicker to produce, so production can be ramped up when there are still just tensions, and it can be built in smaller shipyards.
Hopefully the Federation learnt it's lesson post Dominion War and they are pumping out Defiants round the clock and stationing them everywhere.
Would love to see this class make a comeback in Star Trek like a Archer II or a Neo-Archer. Where it could be a Scout/Escort class ship.
I'd certainly like to see a refitted version of this class of ships with similar warp engine nacelles based on the refit NCC 1701. Especially bearing in mind the need to bring it into scope for the early 24th Century. I like these vessels. They're the ' Defiant' class of the 23rd century.
I like to think Sisko saw this and said "This is a good starting point, but I've got some...ideas."
Thank you for your presentation on!
Only "Negative" I've got is that the retractable landing struts out, as they're usually only deployed during planetary landing & in docking bay maneuvers. Though that's my 2 cents.
Though with saying that, I'm trying to remember where I had heard it. If I recall correctly a Constitution-class's shuttle-bay is barely wider than (only an over-all a 2-5m difference).
It'd be like driving a vehicle up a ramp into a moving semi-trailer, difficult & impractical but not the impossible, to land it inside if needed.
Unfortunately Im limited by what the model is and can do... In this case, no retractable struts. But if you'd like to contribute to purchase or alter other models in the future, then my Patreon link is in the description! ;)
Basically: The Normandy of Star Trek.
The stats and characteristics reminds me of a WW2 era submarine. Designed for limited patrol assignments and in a wolf pack.
It is logical that once Starfleet felt they had a solid technological base that they would start to structure ship and fleet designs on the model of a modern navy. Please do a carrier style ship if you can.
Looks kinda like what a constellation class would look like from the T.O.S era.
I always look forward to these Beta myth videos on Mondays and Thursdays... it helps me through the week and reminds me what day it is!
Question: What would the Archer equivalent be during the TNG, DS9, and VOY era? At first I thought Defiant, but that's pretty overpowering for every single starfleet facility/base/outpost. Then again, 1 Defiant replaces the need for multiple craft, like the 3x Archers.
Thoughts?
(3:06) It's fascinating how the Federation went from super sleek and glittery yet still generic star ships to these very angular and submarine-like designs in such a short period of time. It's almost like they didn't care about the technological developments that they had made thus far. 😜
This class reminds me of a class I found out about recently from the 2022 Ships of the Line calendar. The Shangri La Class. I'd love to hear a history of The Shangri La Class.
Following a crew around on a ship like this would make for a great TV show....
So would a show set full time on a defiant class. But Starfleet likely has them stationed full time out of a star base as a defense fleet.
Tough little ship.
One of my favorite ships, would love to see upgraded variants through the 24th century similar to the Excelsior and Miranda class. Always thought this in an upgraded form would have made a great Marquis ship.
Despite having three Archers assigned to each starbase somehow the Enterprise remained the only ship in the quadrant.
Love the story!! Which TMP era ship do you imagine replaced the Archer?
When DS9 first premiered, I was disappointed in the Runabout... just that the only Starfleet vessels on the show amounted to extended cab shuttle craft. I have grown to like the design in and of itself, but I really wanted something else at the time - and now in retrospect, the Runabouts really should have been something more like this. I always thought it was silly that Runabouts were considered "Starships", complete with their own registry number and "USS" in front of their name. Given that distinction, something like the Archer class, with design cues that say "small ship" rather than "big shuttle" would have been more suitable.
Thanks for doing a video for this starship. It's one of my favorites. A perfect starship for a small to decent sized family. I don't know if you have seen the pictures of the interior for this ship, but it's only three decks tall.
Indeed I have, many versions of it and yes, it is only 3, small and cramped decks tall! :)
The Archer class looks really amazing I totally like this Starship it's a ship I'd love 2 command
🤔 I would think these ships, upgraded, of course, would be the perfect foil to the small Dominion ships during the Dominion War...
Would love to see this style of break down for the Achilles Class from Star Trek: Dominion Wars.
I love this ship. I do wish there would be the abilty for a shuttlecraft to dock on the top and have access via a hatch.
What if an upgraded version of the Archer class fought at Wolf 359. Or what if 50, or one hundred did?!?! Interesting point to ponder.
It appears to be a 23rd century PT boat.
Ah, the Defiant-class of her time. Small, fast, overpowered, armed to the teeth, and mean. Made to hunt in packs and easy to build if needed.
I think i've seen this ship pictured on the front of a Star Trek novel.
Yes, the Vanguard Series!
3:52 is that the TNG warp scale or what ever pased for a warp scake during the TOS/TMP?
I like it as long as the warp engines are too close to the house like the Intrepid... I see that shift as away not to build a Starship I can see it put back into spacedock for contamination cleanup and rebuilding putting the warp engines further back away from the main hall... I don't know if anyone agrees with me or not but that's how I feel about that design....
That is Are not too close to the hall...
She's a beautiful design, although I prefer her big sister the Paris class.
USS Solo NCC 054 (may the 4th)
I love the Archer class ship. Does anyone know if there is a model kit of this ship?
A prototype Defiant
This is a some sort of pocket destroyer !?
Quick question, planetary defense forces are always compost by second class starships?
Amazing video :)
With that size and firepower, it sounds like a precursor to the River class Runabouts as seen in DS9. The advancements in tech would mean the runabouts could do with 4 what the Archer class could do with 40.
Thank you, and to answer your question, yes and no. Starfleet will give defense forces older ships if they request/ need them, due to not having their own fleet or inadequate defenses! But ultimately, Planets are responsible for their own systems defenses!
But every time this class goes up against a single ship larger than itself, it ends up crashing on a planet... (Vanguard and Seekers novel series)
Where the heck is the bridge? It’s not on top with the torpedo launcher. (Not obviously at least) and it’s not on the bottom of the primary hull.
I guess the 3D model couldn't retract the landing gear?
what replaced it?
Plucky little ships
So it's in some way a Federation equivalent of B'rel.
Yes and no ;)
The B'rel were scouts in addition to small attack craft. The Archer isn't a scout.
3:27 4th?!
Are you ever gonna do one about the museum because I would be interested to see what was in the Museum of starships but I love the work have a good year keep it up
That's the plan, one day! And thanks
I never got to own the FASA ship guide (Though I had the RPG sourcebook and Klingon expansion- Nelson Class forever :P ). Forgive my ignorance, but what are those landing-strut/solar panel looking pylons/protrusions on the bottom? Great video, as always, love it.
They are the landing struts for planetary landings!
@@TriAngulumStudiosAudioComics Ahh, cool! I have just never seen them before on a Federation ship in that configuration :) Thank you! Now give me a month to 3D print that beauty.
I think this ship design is fine.. however the Intrepid is not...
Was also in the star trek seekers books.
Indeed, as Seekers is the follow up to the Vanguard Series!
STARFLEET needs small Fighter Class ships. They should have them on large cruisers too.
One thing you might include in your narrative is how the class of ships were named, ie the archer class was named after early noted persons of earth space exploration

I wonder if the Archer-class may have also been used as a first command style ship. Small ship and crew, simple assignment, something easy to jump into for new commanders.
There is a star wars equivalent that fits a similar role.
No it was not, it was always commanded by more tactically experienced officers! This is not a shuttle :P
