As a 12 year old kid who had a gamecube and nothing else back then, Resident Evil 4 felt like a surreal gift from god!! We didn't have the Grand theft auto's, the Halo's the new Metal Gears, Socoms, God of war etc..but we had this!! And even tho it eventually got ported, it gave me huge unexpected pride as a gamecube owner as a kid back when everyone was trying to be "mature" dissing Nintendo.
*I also heard a story that RE4 almost made it to the original Xbox in a meeting between Shinji Mikami and Microsoft Members, th meeting was going smoothly until when Mikami asked them through their translator “what’s your Philosophy on making games?” To which they couldn’t come up an answer and Mikami left and RE4 never made it to an Xbox console until it was re-released to the 360 in 2011.*
Just went back and watched every episode in this series and hit the Like button on each of them. This is easily, EASILY, E-A-S-I-L-Y the best content Gamespot has put out that isn't news related since The Point with Danny O'Dwyer before NoClip. I dare say the work-from-home situation even BENEFITED the show and its style/branding. I've always preferred Gamespot to IGN back since I would print out cheat codes at the school library and THIS CONTENT is EXACTLY why.
I remember I heard this story like 11 year ago when I was searching for RE4 PC cheats. I stumbled upon this forum about everything RE4 related stuffs and I've read about this crazy story. And it kinda shocked me to the core when allegedly Shinji Mikami said that he would commit Harakiri if Capcom ported RE4 to PS2. Turns out that Mikami has been a Nintendo fanboy and he always wanted to work there when he was young, I think. When Gamecube was launched Nintendo approached Capcom to make multiple exclusive games for GC. Though I don't know if RE4 was included in the agreement/contract, or maybe it was since it was initially a GC exclusive but didn't sell well. Though I'm not sure if this was also one of the reasons why Mikami left Capcom in mid 2000's, about RE4 being ported to PS2.

Metroid Prime, Prime 2, Luigi's Mansion, Star Wars Rogue Leader, Pikmin 1 & Pikmin 2, Animal Crossing, Mario Kart Double Dash, Mario Sunshine, Paper Mario TTYD, Eternal Darkness, MGS Twin Snakes, Zelda Wind Waker, Smash Bros Melee, Resident Evil Remake, F-zero GX, Tales of Symphonia (in the west). Sonic ports for the Sonic fanboys. RE4 and Viewtiful Joe for a short time. I always thought Gamecube had a generally decent collection of quality exclusives mostly thanks to Nintendo themselves, at least compared to Wii and Wii U eras. The problem is, there were tons of 3rd party games going to Xbox/PS2/PC only, so GCN owners pretty much all had the same game collection. It wasn't a "bad" collection by any means. But it was still a small range of tastes compared to libraries like the PS2's....so it reflected in the sales. Thankfully, I still had a lovely 5 years with my Cube, which kept me busy enough. Especially compared to the Wii later on.
There's no way Capcom would ignore ten plus millions of extra players on PS2. I was so hooked playing this on PS2 until almost 3 AM when my mom found that I was glued to the TV since 8 PM she was furious. Wii version is the best version I still playing just for its pointer controls,Mercenaries are hella fun on Wii version and frustrating on other versions. If you're light gun fans then you'd understand my addiction with RE4 Wii Edition.
Smart move on Capcom's part because the PS2 version sold significantly more. I don't even think RE4 was the best selling 3rd party game on the GC, which is just insulting. Maybe they should have made Link a playable character. Lol.

The Capcom 5. That was a rollercoaster ride. I never could find a copy of RE4, but was able to rent, but nevee finished. I did own Viewtiful Joe, and PN03 in my library. Both were also amazing. Killer 7, that was a tough one to find, also a rental, since most stores were sold out. Each one offered something unique, and the GameCube could handle it. Loved that system. But PN03, a rhythm shooter, Vanessa vs mecha. And a fantastic soundtrack. Crazy level design (we totally needed a map!!) And tons of unlockable suits + abilities. But RE4, that redefined the series altogether
Great work. This was a fun watch. Also, I had no idea about the miscommunication of the PR statements. That's a nice bit of new info while going down memory lane.
I lived through this saga and I never saw it as a betrayal. It was a smart business decision from Capcom at the time. Everyone that was paying attention knew the Gamecube was not selling well because of Nintendo's insistence on doing everything different from the rest. Those proprietary discs were dumb AF. Switch is selling well but those 32gb cartridges are dumb.
I do remember. After Dreamcast, my choice was GameCube due to this deal. Resident Evil Remake owned me over Ps2 Silent Hill 2 - the biggest games back then. The extra mission with Ada made GameCube RE4 feel incomplete. I eventually purchased PS2 not only for RE4, but also for Onimusha, Devil May Cry, Castlevania and Fatal Frame.
I bought Resident Evil 4 4 times: Wii Edition, PS3 (Which I sort of regretted), PS4 and Nintendo Switch Versions. I gave away my original Gamecube Copy thinking I have so many Versions of RE4.

Phantasy star online episode one and 2 was also a game cube exclusive one of my favorite of all time I understand how they did the cube and it wasn't right but honestly it was so easy to mod in your own characters into smash back then
GameCube had superior textures and audio never used in any other version to date. Every version remastered or ported since has dated back from the PS2 watered down version
While I still game on playstation primarily... the older I get the more I appreciate Nintendo's stable of exclusives.... makes you wonder why the GameCube sold terribly as it really had some amazing games and a more quality lineup than ps2, in my opinion
P.N.03 is a wildly misunderstood game. It's not amazing, but it's got some merit, and like reviewers at the time, this video unfairly short-changes the game.
This guy skipped over Resident Evil 0 and Resident Evil 1 remake, both released exclusively for the Gamecube for a limited time and exclusive to the Gamecube in that console era.
He also for got to mention Capcom was supposed to remake RE 2 and 3 but the sales of REmake 1 and 0 led to them being canceled and just straight ports.

Look what happened to Fatal Frame series after it was released on Nintendo FF4 was not even released in EU. WiiU FF had some interesting ideas but seems Fatal Frame series died on Nintendo. Also one of the most strangest thing the old classical Eternal Darkness Sanity effect which Nintendo patented and never ever used in a game ever again.
I was so excited for this buyout until I started to see less love for future titles. Like wtf is that series now I mean why buy the iP if you are just going to sit on it. If Nin is not going to fund anymore FF then they need to sell it back. Also another ip I wanted them to take back is Ninja Gaiden because I miss my boy Ryu. I sure hope they can do a port to NG collection for the Switch now that they are letting KT do Zelda.

Yeah back then selling over 1 million was still good sales numbers. Cost of making games were not that much & doing 1 million plus was the aim to break even & be successful.
Meh, as a mostly PC gamer, I like Japanese devs having to broaden their horizons a bit. Also, every multiplatform game release is about money. Crysis, the Witcher, Diablo 3, CoD, Valve games (Orange Box), Civilization, Hitman, C&C, and many other formerly PC-exclusive series all came to consoles for the exact same reason. CDPR even outright said that when people claimed Witcher 3's graphics got downgraded due to "consolizing" the game.
Capcom made their biggest mistake when they jumped ship from Sony to Nintendo. It was on the Playstation that put Resident Evil on the map and made it the success it was, and it was disloyal to the Sony fanbase to go to another console to play the new games. There's also no logic going to the Gamecube since it's a much more kid friendly machine, and having a super violent horror game like RE4. In the end they realised they'd make more money on the PS2 so they did everything possible to make that happen, even though they were essentially back peddling at that point, lol

I've got the gamecube, ps2, pc, 360 hd remake, pc hd remake, and wii versions of re:4. Worth!
I bought RE4 on the Gamecube, PS2, Wii, itouch, PS3, PS4, and Switch.
Re4 was made so much better on the gamecube. The ps2 version looks so much worse and it kills the atmosphere the game creates.
