The Famous Mad Lake Trail [Entiat, WA's best ORV Trails]

- (Almost) The full Upper Mad River Trail #1409.1 to Mad Lake. GoPro froze up during the bigger river crossings, but they were uneventful in late-July.
This is some epic single track in a remote area of North Central Washington. The views are amazing. For sub-alpine riding, this is actually a very easy trail, and good for beginners. Though there are two crossings of the Mad River, which in early July can be footpeg-level deep.

I have rode into Mad Lake since I was a kid. I am now 57 and been off a bike for 13 years. Rode in there a few weeks ago. I had forgot how beautiful it is. We went onto Klone Peak.
It’s an amazing area, one of my favorites.

Beautiful ride and location. Remember if youre new at this, those logs and rocks along the side of the trail can cause permanent injury and if you fall into a tree that broke off and is laying down, well, you dont wanna know. Just ride slowly until you get a smooth rhythm going but never trust tight trails like that very much.

We always rode up from Goose Creek or I believe another trail called Alpine. Anyway such a fun place, We would have the birds landing on us up there and eating nuts while sitting on our arms and hands,
Beautiful. I might try to make it out to Mad Lake this year. I rode the Lower Mad River Trail a bit last year as a novice rider and it was a bit too narrow for me. Steep bank up on one side and a drop off on the other. I hit my foot peg on a protruding rock and went off the drop. Bike and I were fine but it took hours and some help pulling my bike back up on the trail. For the most part, the Upper Mad River Trail looks doable.
Upper Mad is more of an “easy” trail for sure - just have to navigate a couple stream crossings that can be flowing pretty decent in July.
did that! had to come back with block & tackle with snow on ground to get it back on trail.
@@tompedersen3934 sounds rough! I have since been on the upper mad river trail and will say it is much more fun. If you haven't been on it I recommend it. There are a couple small ponds you can ride right up to. Pretty neat.
Awesome! Can't wait to get up there this year. Are their any more trails up there that would be similar to this for the less advanced/kids? Took my boy on the myrtle lake trail last year but way to many people. The forest service ohv map doesn't show all that's available I don't think.
Upper Mad River is the tamest trail in the area other than Steliko. Most others are “expert” level and often have steep exposure.

Aaron Kinter It’s a Motominded Stout Mount combined w a Perfect Squeeze phone mount. Spendy, but best I’ve found for hard use.

I also love in the lnw and like riding trails like these but I am looking to get back into dirt biking what kind of dirt bike should I get
There are many good choices, depending on your size, skill level, and the kind of riding you want to do.
I can tell you what not to get: any motocross bike. 250 or 450, the motocross bikes are not good choices for trail riding or enduro.

If the trails been maintained, is it a go for an intermediate rider on a heavier 400 (late season sept/Oct)?
Yes should be fine. It’s an easy to intermediate difficulty trail.

I see them jumping like crazy every time I'm there, but never tried fishing it.

Wheres the best place to catch the trail at? Deep creek?

@@WASemiHardEnduro: Can you still get up there from Elk camp, or do you have to ride all the way around past sugarloaf? Haven't been up there in years.
@@Trad-Am not sure what elk camp is, but there are a few different ways to get there - pine flats, lake creek, alder ridge, maverick saddle.
@@WASemiHardEnduro: Sorry Elk camp is always what it was called when I was a kid. If your headed up from goose creek, or the 6100 rd. across from thousand trails, it's the only road on your left that heads up to maverick saddle, without going all the way around to French corral, and up past sugarloaf to maverick saddle. Where that road turns left and heads up to the saddle, there's an old elk camp, right at the road, or really close to it. I can't remember the FS. Rd. Number, but it's the shortest way up to the saddle. It would slide shut, sometimes, and may not be maintained anymore. I Grew up snowmobiling all over there in the 80's, but can't remember all the road numbers, but remember what locals called em, and how to get there.

JFYI - there are exactly ZERO official mountain-bike-only trails in that area. They are all multi-use. Share the trails, ditch the elitist attitude.
All multi use trails buddy. Stay in Seattle if you have that attitude
👆Exactly. I ride MTB too, but the elitist attitudes are rampant in that crowd. Trails like Xanadu and Tres Hombres in Leavenworth are no more legal for mountain bikes than they are for dirtbikes.
I've lived here in the valley for 20 years. Indeed the dirt bikers (huge increase in numbers over the last ten years) have done a number on many trails and roads. I love dirt biking, but this sport has a far greater (negative) impact on my favorite trails and fire roads than my horses or my mt bikes.
