Exactly - that is the biggest 'W' for me - this gives the Parliament TEETH of sufficient punishment to enforce their laws on giant, money-filled corporations.

The way thispersondoesnotexist works, is that they are constantly generating new images every two seconds (?), no matter how many people are visiting their site. So you are NOT actually prompting a generation when you visit. You are just pulling a copy of the most recent generation. Which will change if you wait more than 2 seconds (?) and refresh the page. So it makes perfect sense that you'd both get the same image when you visit at the same time.
It is NOT "overload protection". It's just the way the site works. Everyone gets the same image if they visit during the same 2 second window.
Note, I'm not sure if it is 2 seconds or 5 seconds, or what the exact time window is. But it is small.

Regarding now preorders, I totally agree with Linus' position, but the Steam Deck approach is one option. Let people pay a nominal $5 charge to lock in commitment. If you don't end up ordering backpack it converts to LTTStore credit. That way, you have a better idea of actual purchase intent, but aren't screwing people if things don't work out.

I have an idea. Linus makes a video and says backpacks are ready to purchase. Let's say I'm a customer. I simply go and purchase the product, but there is a problem! When I try to process the payment, it redirects me to a thank you page and explains that this is a fake payment process and the product isn't actually available yet! It also shows the user a checkbox or something to signup to get a notification when the product was available!
As this sounds fun, it actually needs to be executed very well so no one gets confused/angry or whatever...

    • @j4zappa
      @j4zappa 2 года назад +51

@@roadrunner6224 this is currently a grey area under EU GDPR. It requires that EU CITIZENS have access to their data in a portable readable format. BUT it does not explicitly require they put any effort into portability to support a BUSINESS in migrating their data OUT of Software A's system to Software B.
SO the real world result is that a *HORRIBLE* JSON or XML file will come out from software A which is supposedly 'portable' but requires software B to write a custom parser to ingest that file.
Then all software A has to do is slightly modify the export file format to cripple the import function created by software B.
This proposed change to law is a VERY good thing for consumers as it will give companies more freedom to choose/change software suppliers.

Let's... I mean, never mind the ones not even bothering about it. Now that is assuming that the people that would would be presumed to bother, or are supposed to bother.. are actually bothering. You know, like facebook, or highly integrated financial institutions, or credit card companies, or local government... Now to be fair, kind of a gray area when it comes to infrastructure.. they should be... but technically speaking, I mean... it's not something that traditionally is talked about having Internet security, especially considering that it existed prior in a near identical manner long before, and even during internet, with little to do regarding... except now it does in every way lol! So technically, little bit of column retard, with you know, giant monolith of greed... that's more of an excuse than Equifax had... Or Facebook LOL.. or fucking Nord, that internet privacy service provider that...uh... seem to put very little effort into privacy or security, rather than.. advertising? If only they hadn't had all those logs of its customers, that paid for security and privacy... Well shit, I mean they've obviously learned their lesson.. so it's probably even more of a good idea to trust them with your passwords! I mean, they say it's encrypted! And the VPN only gets shilled on channels that are desperate or wouldn't know any better.
So providing they're not glorified used car salesman of the social media and influencer dystopic dimension with a well documented history of maximum sales and minimum product, {in this case not even viable LOL...). Then there's traditional good old business sense, the Milton Friedman reality of capitalism that fucks with my Ayn Randian fantasy, you know the kind that.. was totally supposed to replace parts on the dc-10s, or have proper inspections.. or maintenance.. and you know it's like, I mean.. back in the 70s getting sucked out of an airplane window with your seat belt on while people were holding on to you, like that wasn't uncommon.. it just didn't happen every day exactly, but not... Like there used to be a huge business in selling single trip life insurance at airports for about two bucks... And you know, eventually after that particular company had practically set an airport on fire.. they were... Fined a small amount of money... Like we're talking into the thousands of lives at this point that was entirely preventable, but actively not prevented on account that it was just thousands, and the fine I can't remember if it was in the low millions or hundreds of thousands but pretty significantly small by comparison to.. sucked out of a fucking plane window, and then there's all the others that died through various reasons, almost all of which involved policies that had taken these risks and had borne witness to these things on on the entire lifespan of that plane, and this was not uncommon it wasn't the only plan that had issues.. it just happened to be the one that got a reputation for it...
What the fuck does that have to do with Internet security, well.. I don't even think they did a apology montage...? Like eventually they had to do something, it was more of a oh shit well that was a tragedy, if only there was something we could have done or if it was in any way our fault.. and then you know, tiny check and a decommission of the airplane...
And this kind of behavior, it's kind of in style right now LOL.. like there's a lot of regulations that came about because of things like this, and it's 40 years later we have fixed so many of them! Just like Nord fixed their reputation, the power of ideological misdirection is stronger than it has ever been since the fucking Catholic Church was dominating the Western business world. so obviously forget about the internet of things ever being short up or secured in any way, like anything that's not an actual thing that would be directly involved in some sort of technology or national security is definitely not getting addressed in any way whatsoever, unless they have to scapegoat around it, which is more than likely what's going to go down a bit in the future given that iot is how all the other things have vulnerabilities in a lot of cases that should be secured.
As far as the government goes, I mean I think they're trying they seem like they're trying.. they obviously didn't think through the whole making the first move thing in 09 that pretty much signaled game on to everybody.. certainly not that part where we didn't take credit for it but in instead we we decided to to take credit for it LOL.. cuz... So anyhow, now as to whether or not those things are actually secure, well let's face it these companies have had a very important interest in maintaining the appearance that things are secure like your credit card, or your government, or you're super government or whatever.. like it's kind of a business that largely functions on the perception of its value, and perhaps strategically some of that was deterrent.. but you know... That shits like that shit sailed, beached.. was broken down into a fucking Tom Hanks cabin, then broken into another raft and sailed again...
So as like I don't know enough to know the particulars, but everybody that I talk to or listen to that does does not have great things to say with regards to the actual state or viability of security, the things that I do know, make it seem like it's just fucking you know.. you're locking the front door, while leaving the man size dog door open, with a button that's on the gate.. and apparently it, like it writes down when you're out of dog food and orders it automatically.. and probably could play Doom... And is also hooked into your smart home... Which is run by a company that very very very very very much sells its products under the guys or reputation of being quite secure, despite having your dog door that's man-sized with LEDs hooked up to it...
So yeah, good fucking luck everybody, sorry I swear so much I really was trying.. also two-factor authentication is how you get SIM swapped by retards.. yes there are ways and then there are ways but just throwing two-factor authentication out there is actually kind of irresponsible, like you actually need to go into it, another thing that is not commonly talked about because there is no technical solution for it, hence why most people haven't even heard of it. So as long as you're poor you should be fine, like it's usually a one stop shop situation... But you know, if you got something to lose you you might lose most of it, and just enjoy the satisfaction that when they do go to jail, cuz almost all of them do.. they'll have all their money left thanks to bitcoin when they get out, it's a feature apparently of this whole thing...
Anyhow hopefully I made my point in the top half of this... I wouldn't want to undermine it in a maliciously disrespectful and tone deaf disregard for those who take genuine offense to the notion that something was far too long for them to want to read, and thus on the holy crusade to combat such malicious behavior, as all things are written to them, and expected of them to be read.. and in that, how fucking dare you! My apologies in advance! Offense wasn't meant, I just have lost a lot of the new speak I grew up with.. it's cuz I'm bad at math.

Interoperability between instant messengers actually worries me slightly. If it's done correctly, it'll be great, but apps like Signal employ good encryption standards and I'm willing to bet Whatsapp doesn't (even though they claim they use the signal protocol, there's no way to verify that). If instant messengers are forced to be interoperable, what are the chances they'll just drop the encryption to make it easier? I absolutely do not want that. Of course Signal doesn't fall in the categorie of businesses that the EU is targeting, but if all other apps are interoperable It'll be even harder to get people to switch over.

Part everyone is missing is interoperability can screw end to end encryption apps like signal. I think this is a backdoor attack on apps like that in pretty packaging.
Forcing signal to share the encryption key with government friendly companies means they would be able to access that data.

    • @grn1
      @grn1 2 года назад

That was my main concern, they need to find a better way to do things that doesn't require sharing encryption keys. That said any time a company stores the encryption keys at all (which most of them do) a government agency can already demand said keys). Ideally keys are handled in a peer to peer fashion without storing them on an intermediary server but the downside with that approach is that the message won't send until both parties are online at the same time (would probably still use a server to let them know they need to exchange data).
Other than that all of the proposed laws sounded pretty good.

I won't pretend to know what he's thinking, but there is a legitimate argument that these problems wouldn't exist without the current IP laws that criminalize breaking DRM, and laws that more in general establish "ownership" over code. Being able to remove apps I don't want sounds pretty great and fixing my tech sounds great as well. The way I see it is that these companies are partially owned by Americans since a lot of our "welfare" goes straight to their pockets, one of the biggest examples of this is Bezos's 8 billion dollar buyout. I see this as an extension of the government who needs to be regulated when it comes to how they serve the people. Years ago when I was taking a Visual Basic class, I noticed when messing around it was insanely easy to add an internet explorer based viewport into an app in the form designer.
I think it definitely increased the reliance on ie of small business software, especially in house stuff. That said, it could just as easily be a part of an API and not the core OS.
Funny you mention help pages, ages ago they had their own chm format, actually reminded me a lot of WordPad in appearance, but with hyperlinks.
The help documentation included feels like it's gotten less and less useful over time.

(if she uses the built in browser) Is she wrong? If there is no built in browser in this day and age how do you get another browser onto the machine (I mean yeah you find a computer with a browser and transfer the installer, but the point is: is it a complete operating system if you need another machine to do one of it's basic functions: Find and install software)? I've always bought into Microsoft's line that the browser is part of the OS... But beyond needing it to download Netscape/Firefox/Chrome I've never agreed that it either needs to be the only engine (like safari IOS) or tied into certain other technologies (Cortana/desktop search). Is it essential: Yes it's not a complete computer without a browser. Does it need to tie into everything: No. I think we basically agree, but I think the HTML renderer becoming part of windows instead of IE is a line in the sand Microsoft crossed. And then tying edge into certain Windows elements is the new line that was drawn and crossed. And now forced online accounts in windows 11...... I hate when Microsoft tries to be a crappier Apple. It's so much better when they're their own kind of evil rather then this "We wish we were apple" evil... At least then there's something of a choice to be made. -Sigh- I guess that's just how it has to be when Apple has the phone market on lockdown and Microsoft can't seem to figure out how to Make phones work for them even when they owned Nokia. I work in the movie industry, a HIGHLY unionized industry, and it just means that there are certain rules that union members must be paid and treated and there is a way for an employee to deal with issues that rise to a level that they don't feel comfortable to deal with on the production. As Linus mentioned, when talking about the EU regulations that are coming, union's collective bargaining benefits often spreads to the non-union workers because it is easier for the employer to deal with everyone the same. "A rising tide lifts all boats". For the employer, it is like employment regulations like minimum wage, just a part of doing business. A TRULY benevolent boss would have his employees join the respective national unions that align with their job titles and just start to conform to the collective bargaining agreements. This way, it wouldn't be the LTT employees forming an LTT employees union, it would be camera men/women join the National Camera Person Union or some such and the office workers joining the the Canadian Office Employees Union or some such. Union members, that work in a good environment, don't get snippety about "The Union Rules" just like they don't get snippety about the "Government Employment Rules" when they work in a good company. I doubt anyone at LTT are complaining about working an extra 20 minutes, if not a whole lot more, when needed, because Linus and Yvonne are great people to work for. It won't be any different if they are represented by unions. I also think that Linus should work a way to sell the company to the employees when he is looking for is inevitable exit. He gets paid for all his long hard work, and the employees get to move ahead reaping the benefits of their hard work and dedication and not having to worry about "the new owners". Anyway, my 2 cents, for what it is worth, which is about 2 cents, 1.5 cents Canadian.

I get where your coming from, but some Unions are awful and do little for the employees themselves, Except collect unions duties.
i get some are good and some are bad. But it's adding additional complexity to something that already work's in a manor deemed favorable by both employees and employer's.
It's fixing something that isnt broken, as for the buy out, no freaking idea, so i cant speak to that.

@@Dracossaint I guess my rebuttal is, you are an american. As an american you have been a victim of many decades of intentional anti-union propaganda. In countries where unions are pervasive, the public's opinion of them are quite high and they are quite effective. Secondly, a union is a collective. It is not a company or a government department. It is literally owned and operated by the members. If a union is, as you say, "awful and do little for the employees themselves", what you are describing is a bunch of people screwing themselves. There is little difference between a union thats member's don't care anything about and don't participate in keeping it responsive to the members needs and no union at all. Was the union(s) you've been a member of not been a good experience?

Interesting for someone to comment about greenwashing and then suggest you should commit to being "carbon neutral". Doesn't that just involve paying a company to plant trees then claiming you're eco friendly? Like... Greenwashing...? (Ok, slight oversimplification, but my point is still valid)
There's a reality that it's all greenwashing. If you don't like it, just don't buy it. You probably don't need it. Not buying the thing is the real eco friendly approach, rather than buying stuff that claims to be carbon neutral...
That said, LTT stuff is designed to be high quality, so it's already better than ordering something cheap and cheerful which will break or wear out sooner. That's the closest one can get to being green while owning stuff - only buy it once rather than again and again each time a thing breaks.
Don't get me wrong, I love anything that fights pollution and climate change, but I'm realistic. Marketing is marketing. Reality is reality.

Sometimes you're lucky other times you just help the government with their income 😂.

A bundle would be sweet for 320 USD you have both hot items. I think both will arrive at the same time so it will safe lmg on shipping. But I understand Linus to. You're not sure when or if they arrive. Canada's customs can be annoying as fuck sometimes. So if those 10 containers are at the docks but customs is gonna take their sweet time to process them it will take ages for them to arrive at lmg.
But I agree I don't give a damn about a long waiting time. It's 3 weeks on his way anyways. Because dutch customs also take ages to go through freight. And that's in a more relaxed period 😅.
When it's busy it easily can take 5 weeks (3 of that are customs)

What the majority of people do not realise is that the most expensive part of manufacturing any item that is injection moulded, such as a screwdriver, is the mould itself purely because each Injection mould is BESPOKE and will probably never be used for anything else unless itcan be easily modified. Injection moulds can cost millions of dollars which is why it is imperative to ensure the end product is suitable for its intended purpose.

I don't really see much of a reason to be excited for new more powerful GPU's as far as gaming is concerned. Yeah Unreal Engine 5 is impressive and all but not many games are fully utilizing the power of even the current gen consoles. Not to mention most game companies are actively trying to make shorter less feature rich games anyway to cut down on time and increase profit margins. Until these companies focus on game quality over micro transactions I really don't see a "need" for a monster gaming pc.
