    For anyone who can't get their waveform to loop seamlessly:
    I found that I had to render/freeze the MIDI to 48K 32-bit audio for it to loop without clicks. Any other configuration would lead to audible clicks as well as imperfect behaviour as a modulator in Serum.
    Once the audio had been rendered, it still looped perfectly once converted to 44.1K 16-bit. For some reason though, freezing the Serum MIDI with those settings never yielded the same result.
    I'm using REAPER but I'm guessing this might also occur in other DAWS - perhaps even Ableton.
    Hope this helps. Also - get Au5's sound design course ya shmucks

    I actually imported a lot of single cycle shapes in the noises just for FM, especially if I wanted double FM and the sub shapes weren't exactly what I wanted to use, but I never thought I could use it to modulate it directly, sometimes it creates FM but not necessarily, that's a really cool technique

  • @shane5003

    without going into great detail like Meredith tried - phase over time IS frequency. if a sine wave is the modulator then the interpolation is effectively equivalent. So we may as well see this latter part of the video using the variable delay as MIDI sidechained FM. Unfortunately we don't have the capacity to set up a complex modulator here with another FM operator by modulating the modulator a.k.a. frequency modulation index. If we dump a sample into sampler and in the oscillator tab turn on FM we get a pretty good darn control there but unfortunately we have to load in an entire sample so we don't have real time, and although we get an ADSR we can't modulate the modulator. This concept keeps coming up and it just seems like nobody's made one. Then I start thinking will shit maybe I should just do it and Max so I have it… But is that really true nobody has made this?

  • @thunderlightcreations568
    @thunderlightcreations568 5 лет назад

    Idk about Ableton, but in Reaper you can modulate any VST parameter by essentially sidechaining it to another audio track. If you set the attack and decay of that sidechain to zero, you can get a similar effect to here, but with live audio.

    an interesting note about FM in serum. from my testing, the "FM" A to B, or B to A is actually phase modulation, and FM from the noise or sub oscillators into A or B is frequency modulation. it's very common for synths to refer to both of these as FM, which leads to a lot of people using the terms inconsistently.
    what's going on at 6:19 with the chorus is also a version of phase modulation, because modulating the delays of the chorus effectively moves back and forth over the waveform, which (more or less) changes the phase. it might still sound different than modulating using "FM (from B)" (this was hard to test, i don't entirely know the inner workings). "FM (from B)" seems to pair up the individual unison voices between the modulator and carrier (or something like that). the chorus trick grabs the whole sound, after unison, and phases over that, by a much larger amount.
    the way I always check if something is PM or FM is the behavior with a few different waveforms as the modulator. note, if you use "FM (from B)", then B is the modulator, and if you use "FM noise OSC" then noise is the modulator. start by making the modulator a really low pitch, like 1hz or something, with the carrier at a normal audible pitch, e.g. around middle C (in serum i've found it's easiest to play a low note and pitch the modulator down and the carrier up). a triangle wave modulator with PM will make two distinct tones, and switch between them (no sliding/gliding sound). a triangle wave modulator with FM will slide between two pitches. a square wave modulator with PM will probably make a bunch of glitchy clicking sounds (depends on the exact square wave the synth puts out). square wave modulator with FM will jump between two sounds without gliding. you'll probably have to move around the FM amount to hear the difference, and keep in mind that if it's too high, the pitch can flip all over the place because it's going below 0hz.
    note those triangle wave tests with the noise OSC -> chorus setup shown here don't seem to work (not sure why, it seems to work with higher modulator frequencies).
    a useful way to think about it is that phase modulation is a version of frequency modulation with an extra step. FM takes the modulator and maps it directly to the frequency of the carrier, similar to using an LFO to change the pitch (not exactly the same because it's frequency and not pitch :P). with PM, we take the rate of change of the modulator, and map *that* to the frequency. that is, if the modulator is moving up in a straight line (like the upwards part of a triangle wave), then the frequency stays still at a high value, and if its moving down at a consistent rate, the frequency stays still at a lower value. this explains the square wave modulator with PM too, because a square wave has two flat lines. a flat line is not changing at all, so most of the time there's no effect, but there's a really fast change to switch between the high and low parts of a square wave, which tends to make a glitchy click. curved waveforms get more complicated, except sine is almost the same in both PM/FM.
    the other difference is that PM will effectively modulate the pitch, rather than the frequency, so a triangle wave modulator with PM will move the same amount of semitones above and below the normal carrier pitch.
    some of the finer details might also vary between different synths, but hopefully i've covered the general ideas involved with PM and FM.
