You’re a true wizard when it comes to serum
Drop everything after wizard
He's not just a wizard, he's a Serum Sage.
"Your a wizard harry!" Every time.
I guess im asking randomly but does anyone know a tool to log back into an Instagram account??
I was stupid lost my password. I would love any assistance you can give me!
Finally someone made a tutorial like this. The most I've ever heard about making cymbals and stuff was just "modulate volume of noise"
Yesss
😂😂😂😂 so true
Au5: noooo you can't just automate white noise level, you need to create inharmonics using fm and complex filters nooo
every other tutorial: haha white noise goes tsss
@@artemetra3262 😂
haha same shit always so true
Make your own noise, don't actually use noise is the best advice for making cymbals
Next video: Synthesizing Serum with Serum
serum is a vst not a sound tho
@@niscog4163 yeah you're right, serum is truly awesome

Synthesizing Massive inside of Serum (FM with Operator)
You really think he can't fig out how to do that ?
I'm so happy you're talking real drum synthesis Au5!
I'm finally not feeling like the only one who teaches that on RUclips. Thank you, these tutorials are brilliant, and even though I've been doing this for years, I'm very much enjoying your take on it. Make more!
Hi @Au5, thanks a lot for this tutorial. As it needs to be paused and backwarded/forwarded, I create a timestamps I post here. Feel free to include/tweak it into the video description if you think it's a good idea:
00:00 Intro
00:28 Real cymbal wavefrom analysis
01:44 Set basic OSC wave form / remove note tracking
02:21 Set FM parameters - turn OSC2 down
03:07 Tweak unisson parameters
03:38 Set global settings to max unisson ranges
04:28 Manage filters and LFO
06:19 Change OSC2 wave form (PWM)
07:12 Add movment to the sound (LFO FM, Chaos detune)
08:29 Add some character (Eq, Reverb, phaser, combs filter)
11:48 Manage cymbals attack (bloom)
13:13 Chorus trick
14:43 New start - Create a ride cymbal
15:33 Global trick - change unisson mode (from linear to somehting else)
16:15 Set modulation for ride cymbal (Env, LFO)
19:08 Use the velocity to change how hard the hit sounds
21:44 Add some reverb at the end of the FX chain
22:06 New start - Create Hi-Hat
23:18 Use chaos on OSC1 detune
23:57 Change LFO to Env to manage endless time
24:27 Set an arpegiator / step sequencer to test Hi-Hat
24:57 Add second arpegiator / step sequencer to modulate velocity + add velocity as modulation source
25:21 Add some filters and FX
28:38 Final examples
29:03 Outro
guess he didn't like it lol..
OK, so you said you would appreciate comments on the method. :)
Here are the tweaks I've employed (and also showcased them in a video below):
- I tried bumping OSC oversample up as we're dealing with FM. It's a tad clearer, I feel.
- I've modified the source waves to be more complex and higher, thus...
- thus my results are much more resemblant of a white noise. In fact, you can almost substitute one for another...
- which would defeat the purpose, but I tried moving my FM amount with an envelope, getting from a "noisier" mode to a more "ridish" mode while the sound changes and evolves. It's a cool trick. It sounds rather natural and gives you a sense of control over the color without touching an EQ or something like a sample pitch.
- I also use a different Amp envelope with a sharper attack and fast rolloff. I feel that "real rides" have very, very sharp amplitude bump compared to their long tail.

Thank you for the inspiration to mess around, because I usually have very different ideas and yours are always looking in your very specific direction. Awesome stuff, and also - huge thanks for NOT creating filler videos just for the sake of them. I hate when it happens and they do it all the time everywhere. Not so much here. You can tell you're really into the invention and that's why you're here to tell about it. Which is great. Feels great. Thanks, greetings from Russia.
thank you so much! we love you Austin!!!
i love how much i learn about serum and sound design in general in every tutorial you make. great video!
There are no good cymbal tutorials online. I have been waiting for this. Thank you, Au5.
best cymbal synthesis videotutorial on the internet hands down, thanks so much for sharing!
Au5 can make anything out of anything, a true Genius!
Million thanks! I was searching for that tutorial for so so long, cymbals are the hardest thing to synthesize, and the main thing I was missing in my sample pack! this, together with your "making punchy drums in serum" tutorial are the best tutorials about sound designing drums, I would really love you to continue that and explain how to make more drum types, like percussion and maybe rims (like acoustic sounding snares or just rims) :)
OMG! This video is jaw-dropping! I'm so surprised and impressed by how much knowledge you've shared. Thank you so much for creating such an amazing resource!
Keep doing tutorial's !! Im about to get my computer then I can finally make music i see in my head with your help . you're a true Celestial Artist ❤🙅✨
real mastery ... thank you bro, you share your wisdom, your videos have to be watched only in sunday, right after i came back from church.
These videos are always released after just enough time for me to forget about that amazing custom intro. I get pleasantly surprised every time 🤩🤩
my gosh i love your tutorials! you explain everythin so well and detailed that even i, as an unmusical person, can understand it :D
Love it!
Love your tutorials some much! You explain really well and the tutorials are really in depth. Which is why they are so great. Pls keep going😉👌💪🔥
Dude, this is fucking amazing bro, first the hypergrowl, now this? dude Au5 and virtual riot man, crazy tutorials from both, I love it
Thank you for sharing this in-depth view. One of the advantages of your approach is the ever varying sound quality of the percussion, it keeps the sound moving and interesting...
always next level stuff from you
Great video like always!
We love these videos and nice serum skin!!
Thanx again for these amazing videos they really help out so much!
Keep up the amazing work and have a great day!
Aspiring new producer over here always here first to listen to all your releases. Super dope stuff man thanks for inspiring the community, you introduced me to my passion for sound and mixing. Have a good one mate.
Yo. Finally. I've been searching for a while now.
i appreciate it when you make these kinds of videos with serum. Thank you.
When you showed the resonances in the samples i immediately thought comb filter and then when you didn’t use it until the end i was like “hey what gives?” lol
one of the best tutorials ive seen!
goes deep while simply explained
well done
Really learned a lot from the video! Thank you so much for doing this!
Pure gold thank you. I tried to make this in Phaseplant with 8 Squarewaves modulating each other but somehow yours turned out to be better just within serum :D
Amazing! Can't help watching your tutorials😁
This is genius. Some of the stuff you pointed out here inspired me to make a patch for "howling wind" SFX, which I've been wanting to use in a track. It's a work in progress, but I think it will work!
Great tutorial my man! Thanks for the knowledge!
the way you analyze audio signal is mesmerizing
Top notch man. Hats off to you
Best video worth every second of it
At first I thought this was another overexplained half hour long video. But I stuck with it and realized it's long because you're showing 3 different types of cymbal sound. Big thumbs up
bro, I love serum and I love your serum skin. GIMMIE!
Awesome job!
You can also make a really high Q on that distortion filter (with the envelope controlling the value) and it will add a sine-y ride vibe to it. Makes it sound like a small ride plate instead.
Core sound design.
Awesome dude
Man I was JUST looking for this!
Watched these video many times. Thx
thank you dude you are the best
Tbh I'm probably never going to make my own cymbals but this is also a great starting point for making other metallic percussive sounds
21:30 there is really something special about that sound!
*you're a wizard Austin!*
yessssss! your vids are the best
What a master, feel incredibly stuid right now, keep it Up :)
Amazing master!!
Thanksss!!
Holy crap this is so cool. Being able to visualize fm synthesis like that kinda blew my mind
One request that would be really helpful is a tutorial on making impacts with serum. I've seen a couple tutorials using convolution reverbs, but I'm sure you have some unique tips and tricks(if you wouldn't mind sharing)
I'm really glad to see this video! The energy transferring from the lower harmonics to the higher is something I've been thinking a lot about lately. I used to have access to a 36" gong, with a beautifully slow bloom, and have thought about possible ways to emulate that.
I think that the same effect happens in a hard tom hit, but actually from the top harmonics downward, as the shockwave from the hit bounces off the rim and gradually gets transferred into the lower harmonics. My goal is to somehow synthesize a decent timpano.
Regarding the phys modeling exciter source: if you shake a loose (maybe has to be old and stretched?) timpano head which isn't mounted, that lightning-like plastic flappy noise is what I really think should be the energy going into a phys modeling system - very different from white noise.
Thank you Austin
Intro is amazing 💥💥💥
Just whoa!
Every time this man uploads a tutorial, my mind is blown
Thank you very much!
Thanks for sharing this is so awesome
this is really fascinating :o
Very impressive.
brilliant man, thanks
wow a free tutorial from AU5!
Thaaank you!!!😍❤
Idk i got this channel yesterday, and now i have my sample pack, deleted all the cancer called CYMATICS, hope he gets successful in life, thanks mate!
All I can say is.. wow! what a find.
Thank you!
Incredible tutorial dude!
hope duda will see this amazing video
Legend
would love to see you try more stuff with phase plant : D
Another video from the sound design god
Though you were an android but the hair looks so silky.
Great work, have no words for your talent!
Damn.. Insane!
3:55 damn, I already recognise cymbal qualities in this sound. I never used frequency splitted oscilloscopes (or whatever that is called) but in this time frame, you have also convinced me how useful it is. Especially to analyse "model"sounds, you use. I think FL's Edison is capable of that kinda visualization too. Four minutes in and you already game me enough to dive into synthesis (via Vital in my case but that translates very easily from Serum ^^). But I am curious in what more you have to say. Back to the video. 🤣
his 2 second long intro is better than everything i've made in my entire musical lifetime
Ive missed you man
Sick !
Bro single handedly launched my sound design career
best sound designer probs 👏😢
Fucking incredible. Don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone make cymbals out of only sine waves lmao. Brilliant, as usual.
Thanks! :D
thank you
Wow, this was a pleasant surprise! Already have some excellent kick/snare Serum sounds from the Masterclass, now some cymbals can complete the set!
The serum masterclass, how was it? Been thinking about getting it but not sure
@@crismeisters The first half is very technical, going over every single function and option, with a few pointers and tips along the way. The second half has the fun stuff, making different sounds, experimenting with techniques, ideas on more advanced sounds and styles. For the price, I'd highly recommend it! (School of Bass is on my To Do list in the near future)
@@CreedP1 thanks man! Appreciate the inside scoop
Nice
Genius
Holy lord.. i followed every min of this and copied everything and saved the patch.. thank you for the hard work.. i wish i new Serum like that haha.
Hey man, this was an awesome tutorial! Do you also have something like this on snares?
wow!
17:00 what a gongshow! 📀🔨
Damn dawgie
Just a suggestion can you hv some kind of remix competition? would luv to see that
Just genius
my dream is to one day have the skills you have
damn. That's. uh. That's deep. Who could think that this was possible ?
Thank you father.
Great technique! When o when will we get an update of Serum, we need better envelopes, more oscillators, a full EQ…
Yep, you are a wizard..
Thank you for this great video. It has taught be alot about synthesis and also led me to buy Serum. Is it possible to purchase the patches of the cymbals you play at the end of the video? It would be interesting to see what you did as I'm still learning all this!
I figured it out when Current Value began to obviously use extreme unisons for anything in his tracks with his crazy signature sound (also Image-Line had a cymbal plugin years ago to do that kind of stuff - I don't remember the name tho, it's likely legacy by now). Thanks for the clear in-depth walkthru !
IL Ogun is an additive synth that is capable of synthesizing cymbals
@@au5music Indeed ! Should have checked, absolutely not legacy
Thank you very much for the tutorial! Before I tried to use a noise oscillator that sounds not good
Also I wanted to ask: do you use Phaseplant or do you have plans about making Phaseplant guides? It's also great synthesizer with unlimited opportunities, and I think your sound design skills will be supplemented by Phaseplant features!
That Serum skin 'bout to make me act up
No cap
Its included in his serum masterclass i think
Amazing. Can this be done in any other Ableton stock synth? Wavetable perhaps? I don’t have serum
