The trees are not dead, William, I'm pretty sure about that. They are dormant. There's been no rain for almost half a year, but that will change in another month or so. As for the red flower, it's a poinsettia, a traditional Christmas plant in many cultures. Also, the problem of communication is not that the locals do not speak English, it's because you do not speak Lao.

Nice travel log of your visit. The history of Laos 1960-1975 is quite complex. The influence of the Royal Family was waning and the National Army ineffective. Three major militias existed (one being the National Army) one led by a son of the King aligned with North Vietnam and one of Highland people (mostly Hmong) aligned with the U.S. 99% of the bombing was to interdict the HoChiMin Trail and the Plain of Jars. There are some excellent historical accounts if you care to read them (Backfire is very good). The Lao Government of today is not really that high on corruption as there is not much to steal.

You went to the wrong waterfalls, kuang si is the best one. And they speak Lao there, don’t assume everyone speaks English. I’m in the USA and find it offensive when people speak a foreign language to me assuming I should know it. If youre still there try the pizza at Popolo. I thought I would never suggest pizza in Asia, but it is amazing and a cool restaurant too.

As for the food , there is a lot of wonderful recepts. By the way Laotian do cook " Khao gnew" which is sticky rice , delicious and very healthy. Pop kan may

In N California, after the rice is harvested, they burn the rice fields to break down the fibrous stalks to prepare the fields for the next crop planting. The skies are full of smoke for weeks. It must be the dry season. I guess if you were there for the rainy season, it would be a frustrating and unsafe ride on the motor bike, so , it's a trade off.

It's unfortunate that the waterfall has dried up. It is really beautiful when it is flowing.
Laos was not my favorite country for all the reasons that you mentioned plus, in almost 10 years of full time travel, Laos was the only place that I've ever had something stolen from my hotel room, by the staff.
As for the smoke, Chiang Mai, in northern Thailand, has the same issue for 2.5 months every year.
As we travel, the world becomes smaller & smaller. We know what is available & possible in other countries so, it's hard to see people & infrastructure suffer the way that Laos & Cambodia suffer.
I've been to Cambodia several times for Thai Visa purposes. I'm not a fan. In Thailand, the smiles are natural & a way of life. In Cambodia, I found the people very nervous & the smiles very forced.
Anyway, enjoy the rest of your stay.
Joma Bakery Cafe & A taste of Ceylon are very good food places.

Thank you for this tremendous video about Laos--hadn't thought about this country for so long, and was intrigued about what it had become since--not so great! lol. So appreciate your commentary about the politics and government and what happened during the Vietnam era. If the US had been allowed to win the war and not abandoned the country to devolve into communism, (due to political pressure at home), I'm sure conditions would not be like they are today with the people suffering the consequences. SO interesting about the bombs that were left behind--that is a shame that the people have to worry about that--so thankful to God that he protected you from those--he was guiding your path all along. Although capitalism isn't perfect we can sure see the alternative in these countries.

Hello there. You are traveling during the beginning of drought season. From June to October October, it will be monsoon season. In November to March will be a good time to visit Laos. as for food might not be what you expected most vendors don’t really wear gloves and that’s my big issue there. You can try to go to Vientiane Lao. I have the issues at the noodle shop that you and your friend went and eat after you are nightly activity, those young ladies touches their face and hair and touch the meat and noodles that I don’t like.

I did not know how bad the brush burning are and they're still doing today. Should someone educated the government about this?
Sad you did not see the beautiful water fall.
