Nice fishing! I also currently use a vintage Mitchell 300 which I recently completely disassembled, regreased, and cleaned. Very nice feel to it, but you can’t touch it without it ticking like a clock, a tell-tale reminder of the metallic construction. I have it mounted to a new Shimano 6’ light action rod and strung up with Zebco 15 lb camo line. It’s perfect set up for shore casting in Pennsylvania lakes, probably would work in many applications as well. Keep em coming! 🎣

I have a friend who has a pond in Michigan where I’ve been fishing for 40 years . Over the years he’s had different fish & he doesn’t fish it anymore so he has huge Bluegill & Crappie. I throw everything back. So once in a while I will get lucky enough to get a smaller one on the line & play him a little & usually a Bigmouth will come up & swallow him then I would play him till I tire of it & jerk the Bluegill out of his mouth reel the Bluegill in take of hook put back in. What’s really neat is you see this big old mouth open up under the Bluegill & swallow . Awesome.

I've used Carolina rigs. I tied them really well and still break off. Now, I use a 7 inch leader with a size 4 or 6 baitholder hook. I use a trilene knot tying leader to the main line. Then I put a 1/4 oz rubber core weight with live worms on a hook. This rig is a God send. I catch tons of fish this way. Sometimes, I'll use split shot weights, so live worm falls slower. Works like a charm 😊 Just have to be careful with spit shots they can compromise your line. Try looking for 1/16 oz rubber core weight, and you should be fine

Fishing in the simplest of style. I love how he loves the bite. It's not about overpowering the fish. It's about enjoying the fight. If you can go out there with 78 lb test and catch a catfish it's only 20 lb go for it man if you if that's what you like. But it sure is nice to enjoy the fight. That's why I go out there with 4 lb test maximum if I'm shooting for Crappie and 10 lb if I'm going for bass. There's no pound test limit for going for catfish but at the same time enjoy the fight no matter what.

It's illegal to use live bluegill in Virginia. Game fish. I'm jealous because live Gill are really good bait. Good luck and many fish to ya. Oh, and flathead WILL NOT bite in the daytime in the river where I live. Lucky ass.

VDIGF says any game fish caught by legal means hook and line can be used while. Bluegills are the only game fish that can be used as cut bait. Been useing live bluegill in buggs for 35 years.

Another informative video as usual! Just wanted to mention that my wife bought me a Berkley Lightnin' Rod way back there when they were new (casting rod w/baitcaster reel) and that was the lightest and BEST feeling graphite rod in existence at the time in my opinion. It was awesome ....what I wanted to tell you was I think I saw a new lightning rod at Academy or Walmart so they must be manufacturing them again or still...not sure but also not sure if they are similar to the old ones (I had my hands full and couldn't feel of it at the time :( to see how it felt). My point is I loved my Lightning rod....it was awesome and if the new ones are the same or similar they are worth a look! Thanks Richard for what you do!!!

Richard, the rod you have in your hand at 6:13 is the exact same one my grandpa gave me. If I’m not mistaken it’s a abu Garcia from the 70s right?

One time I was fishing I snagged a baby bluegill with no bait off a treble hook. As soon I snagged it and whipped it back into the water I yoked out a bass. It looked like I was fly fishing when I really wasnt. The bass hit the bluegill as soon as it hit the water. Had to have been the fastest back 2 back catch ever done and I was like 12 years old. Im 33 now.
