My two cents worth - Ditch the EFI, I did an EFI install (FiTech) on my 65 Mustang 289 and it sat more than I drove it due to continual failures. The EFI was cool, the engine ran great, when it ran. It got better fuel mileage, when it ran. Cold starts and engine warm up was great, when it ran. Throttle response, lack of stumbles or hiccups was great, when it ran.....I think you are seeing a pattern here. In three years I sent the EFI back to the factory three separate times for warranty work, each time the car was down for 2 - 3 months. I finally slapped a carb back on it and haven't had a single problem since.
Been running fitech 600 for three years on 5:7 tbi in mud holes on freeway just clean the fule filters an change oil more than regular they do over fule if u have a heavy foot
@@corydriver7634 Well when it happened to me (not in my vehicle) it needed parts. The owner sent it back for warranty work. So you’re suggesting we carry a whole extra set up?
@MattKubik1791 Matt! I literally just found a bell service bed at a junkyard in Billings Montana. It is in worse shap than yours, and pretty rusty. The fenders are missing, but I could tell they were the same shape by the bolt holes. I hope you see this.
Sweet to run into a bump side channel. Grew up in my dad's crew cab "frankentruck". It's a 71 cab on a 93 f350 chassis with a long bed. 12v Cummins and a Allison 6 speed manual transmission. It's a beater with all sorts of mismatched colors, dents and rust. But an awesome smooth running beast of a truck. I've got a yellow 69 f100 ranger called crazy canary with a 360 V8 3 on the tree with a f250 rear end in it giving it a massive rake.
I used a a light coat of home depot citrus paint remover to remove just the top coat of ugly paint on my old power wagon, I watched it after i sprayed it on and didn't let it burn into the lower layer i wanted to save. it worked great.
Cool find man. New here. Like the Utility bed on an old Utility truck. Definitely gonna follow the crew cab build series. My two cents on the 250 would be a 429/allison 4-speed swap from an F700 with 430 gears and a limited slip diff. ❤😊
On the thought of adding a carb, there’s another channel on here that is Thunderhead289, and he’s figured out what he calls the Carb-cheater, and it’s basically a carb spacer that regulates the air fuel ratio and keeps it running perfectly. Also has a kill switch function. Pretty neat concept that I would definitely look into if I were you.
I like the way that box bed looks on the Bell Systems truck. I think it could stand to drop quite a bit lower, maybe not quite as deep as even with the bottom of the rear window, but at least low enough to see out the rear window. I think it could look really nice with very little work. Just needs to find the right new owner.
Rarity does not always equal value. I wish that was in the cards but I have to make my decisions on what would be the most profitable with the amount of time invested. A full restoration on this truck just doesn't make sense in my eye.
Very cool! I recently bought one of the Southwestern Bell utility beds from the 60’s. It had that same green color. Won’t be using the ladder racks on my project. Maybe they’d look cool on yours! 😃
Glad you found a Bell box for it and give a rip about its history. My $.02 is to get it functional then move it on to someone else. Have you run a Marti Report on it yet? Also, the paint mix for pre-1970 Bell System Green is hardly an ancient secret.
I've had good luck using Easy-Off oven cleaner to get spray paint off original paint. Test spoting first, of course. Just let it sit on there for 10 minutes, then wipe off.
Take the efi off the ultimate highboy throw a carb on it. Carbs worked for a long time. Couple Spare parts in get glove box and you’ll be able to go for as long as you want. Also 390 stroker would be cool!
Man that thing is just Bitchin. I've got a 1967 Ford F-100 SWB. I would really like to find some service boxes for it or a box like you have here. If it was me I'd fix what's wrong with drop it down a little nothing stupid low .And then just daily it.
Hi matt put a edelbrock carb ive ran them for over 20yrs no problems i looked into different efi an what i found was great when it works but to many problems in the long run . Cheers mate🇦🇺
I'm curious to see what you find with your EFI. I put the same system on my 78 Bronco with a 460 for the perceived added reliability, just with an EFI fuel pump on the frame rail. I started running into the same issue on a really hot day up in the mountains at first. Now it does it randomly, sometimes just on startup. I'm thinking maybe fuel pump issues. Like you, I'm frustrated given the cost of the system.
I agree with doing all the wiring at once. Make good notes along the way too. It would take me 10 minutes to figure out where I left off the day before when I did the harness in the Mustang. That was a lot more straight forward than what you’re dealing with. If you are going to be wheeling the ultimate highboy across all kinds of terrain, I like EFI as the better option. Take some time to look it over and see what you find….. might be a simple fix. Is there a way to create a return flow for the fuel system or does it have to be dead headed? I’m a fan of the FE’s and always want to see ‘em in anything. A Godzilla version would be cool too.
I absolutely agree!! That would be epic build. I was thinking a coyote with a full QA1 suspension and keep the rest ratty. But not sure I’ll be the one to finish that project on this one.
Take the back doors off of bed and put aluminum diamond plate doors on and call it good gets rid of most of that nasty green and adds a slight bling too it without taking away from the patina paint.

I'm sensing a common theme here.....
Same reason I decided not to go EFI on my Land Cruiser. To many failure stories, my carbureted engine has never failed to start on a remote trailhead.
@@stephanprotzen6030and IF it did fail you could probably fix it in the field with basic tools.

Actually saw one of these old trucks on a ranch that had an original Ford utility bed on it I should go back and see if it's still there
Absolutely crazy that you found a bell service bed.
I know!!

@@FORDCAMPERSPECIAL very cool! I’m sure there were a ton out there but I bet a lot suffered the same fate as the one you saw.
They put it on wheels and used it as a tool box/ storage box ot looks like. I wish I could email you a Picture
Truck is badass! Keep it and use it as a work truck
The Bell truck is great !
Very cool! Love that truck!!!
That bed looks so good on it

Thanks for the tip!
Vice Grip Garage has awesome patina clear coat...spray or wipe on.. Derek has permanent clear coat or a temporary wipe on oil patina coating..

I think you should fully restore that bell truck because how many are in existence?

theres still a few of these in north east sd, seems like most of the old bell trucks got put out to pasture around here when they were retired.
I've had good luck using Easy-Off oven cleaner to get spray paint off original paint. Test spoting first, of course. Just let it sit on there for 10 minutes, then wipe off.
I've heard of that too. I will have to give it a try.
Looked 100 times better with the short bed thanks for the content
Different folks have different taste I suppose. Thanks for watching even if you didn’t like it!
Shame you missed out on the f600 parts truck but you gotta draw a line somewhere 😎👍 Bed matches nicely Matt 🔧
I had a 67 with 64 390 4-Speed low Grany.
My very first vehicle was a 67 f100 ranger. 67 was the last year that the heater controls were pull knobs. 68 they went to the slide controls.
Lots of one year only items on 67s

I agree that it needs to be lower but not dragging the ground. It would help increase the cool and make it less work truck stance.

That's cool! did it look this this one or different?

Yes If I keep the current set up I may add a regulated return on the system.
Put a regulated return system with a Bosch pump...?
Dont give up on the ultimate HIboy. Maybe another efi specialist look at truck with you it has got to be a simple thing.
I'm sure its something simple I've not given up yet.
hows that spot light mounted? i would love to find one for my 69
tail lights are 58 chevy
They certainly are. Saw them hanging there and laughed.
US Navy purchased four-door vehicles like that and they were gray
That was one other possibility I failed to mention. I wish I was able to find some form of history from who had it originally.
Godzilla swap would be a sweet setup or maybe the holley sniper efi
I've thought about doing a Holley terminator X on it since I have port efi intake already.
@@MattKubik1791 I completely spaced out that you have the port fuel injection on that truck.
Try sos pads maybe

I just picked up a 1971 ford econoline van ex NW Bell telephone. It has been painted over the original phone company colors.
junk the banger and put in a 390 4 speed
I’m going to see if it will run first.
