I understand this was when the reality of Keith Moon's passing began to impact on Pete Townshend. Saw The Who with Keith in the drivers seat and many times with Kenny on the drums. We knew it would never be the same.....some great shows nevertheless, especially Wembley arena 1981, row c - The Who set the place on fire that night. I love this version of Long Live Rock. Long live The Who.
I was at the concert it was excellent that year 1979 I saw them at the first show with Kenny at the Rainbow, then at Wembley, the 2 shows at Brighton then the Hammersmith show.
From about 3:00 to about 3:20! I saw them 4 months after this, in Oakland California. The set list is essentially the same. This was only a few weeks after the tragedy in Cincinnati as well.
I think he got off the smack, coke, booze, ativan and few other things in the early 80s - all at once, which must have been tough. If you check out the performance of this song from the same tour "The Who at the International Amplitheatre in Chicago in 1979 [HQ]" his playing is great, but he still has that gooey booze sweat look to him.
Pretty sure it was just booze at the time of this show. He started taking coke in the early 80s, but (according to him) he was unaware that his supplier was cutting it with heroin. And that is apparently how he got his habit which he kicked in '82 while the It's Hard studio recording was taking place. Of course, this is all from Townshend and we know he has a tendency to "guild the lily".
You can tell how bad Pete was missing Mooney. He was so out of tune and slurring the lyrics, it almost painful to see. Give him credit for carrying on like a trooper.
