    2:33 The focus breathing of these Viltrox lenses also seems to be well-controlled, which further benefits shooting video. This is surprisingly great considering the 24GM and 35GM have some serious focus breathing.

      Hey hey again Frank!
      You are very correct after I made the review I realized I forgot to talk about focus breathing. This 23mm seems to have breathing well controlled during that AF movement of 15 some feet. Definitely a great thing for filmmaking!

      So glad you enjoy these reviews and that I was able to provide some valuable info! The mapping of the focusing ring is awesome, i've never played with a lens that had such a thing. Every lens maker needs to do this as we go into the age of mirrorless cameras. Can't wait to see how Viltrox continues with their FF series for FF shooters!

    I love this lens, and use it a lot with my a6400 to get that 35mm view. I find it a great tool, for sure. Tough to keep stable on my camera, since neither has stabilization, but once you get used to how to move with both the camera and specifically with this lens, it's really an awesome combination. Thanks for the great review.

      @@TLDR_filmmaker I had to come back here to watch this review because I had sold this lens, and have been using the sigma 16 mm f1.4, (which is an awesome lens) but I realize that I really miss being able to manually focus, meaning doing focus pulls, meaning reliable focus that I can repeat, and I just can't do that with the sigma, so I just bought this one again, after confirming by watching your video, that I could use this like a manual lens as well. Fortunately, I found one brand new for much cheaper than when I bought it originally. :-) I Rely much more on manual focus, so this for me is a great lens. Especially for my Sony a6400, I get that 35mm focal length equivalent, it's just perfect. Glad I got it back. :-) and thanks again for the great review. (I almost bought a really inexpensive manual 25mm lens, but I decided for the extra $150, it was worth having autofocus as well)

      So glad you enjoyed this review! Absolutely, this move to a much more linear mapped out focus ring is by far the best move to come out of the mirrorless fly-by-wire era of lenses. It's also great to see certain camera companies now letting (some lenses) determine how much focus throw you want. The future is very bright for us filmmakers :)

      @@TLDR_filmmaker what does TLDR mean in your channel name? All I can find is “Too Long Didn’t Read”’ but I suspect you must read about the gear you review. (Assuming)

      The TLDR in my name is for how I format my channel. So all the answers that are put straight in the front of the video are for people that just want the answers and don't care how I got there. TLDR was a acronym used for bloggers or writers who will just give you a summery of the whole article so you get what you want to know and move on. My channel mimics this.

      Hey hey again Darren!
      Glad you enjoyed this review! Thats a good question, not sure as I don't have any Canon cameras anymore. If I had to guess, the Sigma may have some better coatings for flare control and CA. But for me I'm totally fine with lens image irregularities as long as AF works and the Focus lens is mapped out. I feel if all lenses are clinical then its no fun to use lenses anymore haha.

    gonna make talking head video and overhead video, what should I choose after sony kit lense that i have already had, sigma 16mm or this viltrox 23mm?

    • @TLDR_filmmaker
      @TLDR_filmmaker  3 года назад

      Hey hey Somenbi!
      Thank you so much for checking out this video and asking a question!
      I guess it depends on two things. What focal length would you like to use for both, 24mm or 35mm? Lastly you will need to find out what the close focus of the Sigma 16mm lens is as this could affect how you want to use the lens for your overhead shot.
      I can't confirm this but I think the Sigma 16mm focus ring is not mapped out like the Viltrox, but if this is not of concern for your needs, no worries. Just need to figure out your preferred focal length and close focus.

      Unfortunately I do not know as I do not have access to that Sigma lens to do a head to head. If I had to guess, I would assume the Sigma has a different coating so that you won't have that sunburst style flare. As far as everything else, you may need to cross reference this review and someone's sigma review to see if the touch on the same aspects I did in this video.

However I am using this lens with my A7iii in APS-C mode for b-roll product shots. I really do enjoy using it and cannot wait for the Full Frame Versions to show up so that I can film in FF mode on the A7iii or A7Siii and feel comfortable going between AF and MF modes.

    Is this viltrox good for night shots?

    • @TLDR_filmmaker
      @TLDR_filmmaker  3 года назад

      Hey hey thanh thanh!
      Thank you so much for checking out this video and asking a question!
      This is a very common misconception when it comes to creators looking to film in dark situations. While yes this lens will do much better than a f4.0 lens, it doesn't inherently make this a good lens for night shots just based off of that. This will determine what your camera exposure settings are and how well your camera handles higher ISO settings. This lens will definitely help keep your exposure settings at near ideal settings, but it may not be perfect depending on if you are filming at a night life area vs the mountains. Lastly because the light gathering is done on the lens level, depending on your composition, you could be dealing with shallow depth of field for pulling focus in video.
      So long story short, yes it will help you get better night shots, but it won't matter if you are filming in complete darkness, it at all possible bring a small pocket light or put yourself in an area with a little bit of light to work off from.
      Hope this helps!

      Hey hey Srijon!

      If your focus is slightly off, you'll see some Chromatic Aberration (green). However I am not a photographer by trade so I don't really pixel peep to look for it. In my video test and initial playings with the lens in normal filming settings. I really did not see much CA wide open.
