- A 16-year-old British athlete was leading the race for most of the men's 200m at the European Athletics U18 Championships before he slowed down far too early, enabling half of his competitors to beat him to the finish line.

He suddenly remembered something about sports betting
Maybe he's related to Ivan Toney..
He took the phrase quit while you're ahead too seriously.
I lolled at your comment.
💀
He’s the same guy that dropped the ball at 1 yard line instead of scoring a TD.
Clever
He's like that mma fighter who thinks he got the walk away knockout then ends up losing
Commentator: Absolutely phenomenal !!!
9 seconds later...
Commentator: Absolute disaster !!!
He suddenly remembered that the top 3 get drug tested.
😂
People think you are joking, but probably telling the truth.
Why would you think he is juicing ? That's weird .He is 16 and this was his first heat . Clearly in a heat with a bunch of also-rans ..Collosal error /dumb/ whatever but juicing ? Unlikely .. I know what it is
Yes ... no one ever has used steroids in sport @@bdbolton
Not in the heats they aren't. What's more, there are random drug tests anyway. Also, if you were going to deliberately avoid coming in the first three and were worried about drug testing, there are several ways of doing it without bringing attention to yourself. Have an off day, pull up with a "twinge" as a precaution, pull out before the start because of a suspected injury.
Obviously he slowed down intentionally.. its a message to someone for sure
No he slowed down because he wanted to conserve energy because he had such a large gap. He was so cocky that he didnt anticipate they would catch up
He knew what he was doing
@@ERIN_198conserve energy for what tho? Its a spint not a marathon. There is no reason to conserve energy in a sprint.
And he is an elite runner, he didnt accidentally lose imo. It was clearly intentional
Throwing the race for mobsters?
@@ERIN_198Sprinters pull up at the end when they have a large lead, but not like this. This was deliberate and he didn’t even looked surprised at the result. It was on purpose.
He told me he was going to do that. And now we’re both rich.
Haha
Wish i know that then then i was like you guys rich😂
Looks like he did that on purpose.. When he eventually saw the other runners in his peripheral vision, he didn't attempt to step on the gas and he didn't look surprised.. He was making a point to someone
The Loneliness of the Short Distance Runner.
Yeah to the anti doping authorities lol
@@Joonzi 🤣🤣🤣🤣
He clearly threw the race, either through some betting scheme, or he was directly paid to lose. He looked left, and right, and knew exactly where the runners were. It's at that point he slowed down to the point of almost jogging the rest of the way.
If that was the case why would he gain such a lead? Surely he would make it look competitive. I think he was just being cocky but it backfired
@@GoGetYourShineboxbut he didn’t speed up even in the end.. his behaviour does look fishy..
@@MsHSpringAND ….. no interviews!?!? Fishy indeed
@MsHSpring that's what I thought too. He didn't seem at all bothered that people were passing him.
@@GoGetYourShineboxPeople would believe that he gradually got exhausted
We've all seen runners ease up before but that was a whole different level of it.
Absolutely bizarre! A lot of people saying it was fixed to lose, but why would he make it look like it was fixed, taking a comfortable lead at first and slowing down so others could catch up?🤷🏻♂️
If you get bribed to throw a race, you try your best not to make it look like you threw a race !
I can understand easing up, but he basically started jogging 50 yards before the finish line! Mind boggling. Did he think the rest of the runners had given up and gone home?
He intentionally didn't care for winning and threw.
We just don't know the reason why.
Yall cant be this dumb.
Its to make bettors money. He was the favorite. Have people bet against him. They win the underdog bet, he gets a cut of the winnings
@@JamieJamie2o2 No he did not
I genuinely do not even understand easing up. I see it in the Olympics quite often, they slow about 15-20ft from the finish line and people do lose this way. Why not just go all out / as fast as you were going until AFTER the line... that's when the race is over! I really don't get losing gold because you just slowed down for no reason, the race is not over! This guy though, slowed earlier and more drastically than I have ever seen, seems a bit suspicious.
@@Auron710 In preliminary heats they don't have to win to move on to the next round. So a top athlete can hold back a little in the early heats if they have the opportunity. Any time they run there is possibility of injury, at this level.
But this was something else. He slowed far too soon and too much, and without much of an effort to speed up again. Lot's are saying that betting was involved but how can you win a bet by cheating? Doesn't make sense to me.
Dude from Sweden was like
I won?
He probably had a bet on
But why would he go sprinting like that at the start?
@@garethlloyd4716 to trick the live odds, duh!
@@user-kj6be8sf3v buddy the race doesnt even lasted 40 seconds no point of providing live bets on this
@@garethlloyd4716
The hard thing is..where?
Being a sprinter of that caliber, you will not "misjudge" a finish line 🤦♂️
He’s in high school…
@@mertholomy8414my 5yo kid knows not to slow down lol 😂. This guy thinks he is in horse racing and trying to beat the handicapper
But a race finished in 22s, they're definitely not beginners lol.
He even did the first 100m in 10-10.5
He watched the incredibles the night before
He had a sudden existential crisis and had to slow down for a sec 😂
“If you ain’t first, you’re last”- Ricky Bobby😂
😂😂😂😂
“Wait! Did I turn the stove off?”
That's like Mr Incredible telling Dash to slow up. 😂
I thought that haha “close second! Close second!”
“That was an absolute disaaaaaster Phil Minshull” had me in tears 😂
Thought he said Phil Mitchell😂😂
Me too thought it was Phil Mitchell
Everyone saying he misread the finish line. No, that was completely deliberate to prove a point to someone. If a professional football player kicks the ball into the dugout, we wouldn't say they misjudged where the goal was😂
so he wanted to lose?
What point? To whom?
@@mockinghyena960the first few racers get drug tested after and since he was so far ahead I wouldn’t be surprised if he was using something
Probably pulled/strained a muscle, pretty easy explanation to be honest. Laughing at everyone's comments here, the world's really been dumbed down
@@JustinSteele-gd5nuHe probably would have showed some indication of being in pain.
He saw a sign that said “Mind the Gap” and took it literally!
He suddenly remember he was a pace maker
He must have took money to lose the race
The fact that he almost solwed down like he was walking in his lawn .
What?
Are parts of this sentence missing?
@@nedflanders1559 why ? Don't you understand English.
Why am I think of the incredibles scene where the whole family is telling Dash to make a “close second” 😂
This is like the scene in The Incredibles where they tell Dash to slow down during the race
*is about to win* "oh wait I'm British, gotta make sure I come maximum 2nd place"
This is like that scene in The Incredibles, where Dash has to slow down in the race to make it look like he is normal.
He just didn’t want to show his super powers. You know, Dash from the incredibles lol
he forgot he bet on someone else
Definition of I can definitely dust off the competition. I just choose not to.
Did he feel some sort of twinge and ease up? When they start overtaking he makes no effort to accelerate. Very odd indeed.
His got more fame doing this then he would ever. Clever guy
I don't know if he was trying to "get even'' with someone but he clearly threw that race.
How could the commenter and anyone in the comments think this wasn't done on purpose?
He was thoroughly looking around, making sure some of the others would pass by in time.
There is obviously quite a bit of information missing here.
He knew what he was doing. Completely "threw" the race for certain reasons
Obviously there's betting or paid to lose involvement here.. The distance from the finish line when he suddenly slowed down was really obvious.
Serves him right! I hate it when sprinters do that!
Agreed. I HATE it!!!
Yep - Bolt's records will go sooner than they should have, due to exactly this.
@@dazjackson1972With due respect, this just isn't true. He still has the top 3 fast races of all time. He likely wouldn't have broken 9.58 at Beijing even at full tilt. He holds the record by more than a tenth of a second and it's not going down any time soon.
@@dazjackson1972 Bolt said that he didn't have to train as hard as the others not that he didn't try as hard as he could in the sprints.
You hate it because you aren't a professional athlete. Athletes do this to save energy in early rounds of world championships, Olympia and other multi run tournaments.
They also do it to prevent injuries. Why going 100% for 100% of the distance when you can go 80% the last 20%?
Probably experienced a "what's the flipping point" moment. I felt the same at my last school's sports day in 1965.
He remembered that he would sleep with the fishes if he won.
"Paid to take a fall" has a whole new meaning ;)
He didn't even look surprised or disappointed. He acted like guess my job is done
He just needed a BoAh of Wa-Ah 🍶
Bro got that plus speed minus intellect stats
Bro was first time ahead in a race and tried to flex (too early)
At 16, this can be excused. I am sure his coach will correct this mistake. Bro is smoking the circuit in Lima. Congrats son!
I doubt its the same thing, but i remember a time where i ran so hard my body gave out on me. It was a 500m race and i was trying to stay on the hip of a guy who was nationally ranked. Right before the final 100 i literally couldnt go faster than a jog. Went from second to 4th. Embarrassing AF too
If he had an Olympic equestrian medalist in his coaching team, this never would have happened.
“said i’m running but i take my time… friend of the devil is a friend of mine.”
He was betting against himself
Check that man’s bank account
He didnt want to called Ben Johnson
Thought he was bolt until he got passed
Now that was a mismatch.
0:27 "an absolute disaster Phil Mitchell"
He remebered that his mom said that if he wins theyre going out for ice cream... Dude is a closet lactose intolerant
😂😂😂😂😂 secured his forever infamy no matter what he does or doesn't achieve in his career.....smart move...surely a money spinner for him in some way.
Ban him for 8 years. This kind of deliberate sabotage should not be tolerated.
Boo hoo. Cry me a river
If oopsie doopsie was a person
I think he was told to throw the race and made it look obvious for a reason.
It was in the heats, he figured he'd save his energy for the semi and the final. Top 3 qualify, guess mathematics isn't his strong point either.
This is what Dash did in the Incredibles 🤔
what did he end up, like 5th? how could you make a 'mistake' so badly but make it look so vewry deliberate
How arrogant! Serves him right.
Not arrogant, you don’t understand track, just a mistake from a young inexperienced sprinter
Must be a wide receiver
His real name is Dash and his parents are the incredibles. If he's too fast the world finds out he has superpowers
He F around and find out. 😂
Me fluffing my golf handicap the first day of a tournament
he think he is Usain Bolt
Nah they need to investigate players BETTING FOR CASH and disqualified for life
Was he having a medical issue? He clearly turned around, saw everyone catching up, and didn’t even try…
Sadly no. "....nothing hurts me or nothing like that."
I think he just misjudged where the finish line was.
With respect, you must not be a track and field sprinter.
He did Not "turn around", he made a quick glance to each side and did Not see the competition coming on strong. ...young and dumb, lesson learned 🙏🏾
I often saw this in my HS and college competitions, it is simply poor judgment- while trying to look "cool". I've seen Many runners who wanted to win, "w/o even trying".
He's obviously not too bright. Even when they were passing him, he didn't catch on.
@@Article_170 it was qualifying heats so the top X move on to finals. Most coaches tell their athletes, do enough to guarantee a spot in finals, but don’t expend all of your effort.

He thought it was all over. It is now!
He tad taken money and suddenly realised that he was supposed to lose.
You see it as a disaster he sees it as a win... to think of what he won 💰 when he bet on himself in Vegas!!
He failed the last few QTEs to get that speed boost.
This guy watched too much TV… Usain Bolt is much faster when he starts slowing down in his 100 or 200m races
He felt sorry for the other mediocre sprinters.
Yep... he looks British!😂
He’s probably buddies with Jontay Porter
I believe we call that ‘race fixing’
Ford vs Ferrari. Nuff said.
He just ran out of steam …his legs were like jelly .. now he’s off to the bookies to collect his Sweden at 20/1 winnings
So bizarre that he’d slow down that far away from the finish line. When you see Olympic sprinters slow down to preserve their energy they do so with about 5-10 meters to go, not thirty. Did he get a bit too cocky and misjudge how far away he was from the others? Or did he do this intentionally?
