Now THIS is an album you should do from beginning to end. One of his best.
Absolutely
What he said.
Yes. And Madman. And Pino Player. And Yellow Brick Road.
❤
Dont forget Honky Chateau@@llschnitz
Early Elton is the best Elton. Imo
Tumbleweed Connection is his finest album ❤
This is an amazing Elton John deep cut, one of my favorites!
👊
This is an album of excellent deep cuts.
Oh yeah, Tumbleweed Connection is probably my favorite EJ album. So funky & southern.
Exactamundo!
This whole album is dope❤️💕❤️💕❤️💕
Hey Taka!!
Hey Lon and Che🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
Ah, finally. This is one of Elton's very best albums, and deserves an album reaction. The early, direct, sincere, soulful, innovative Elton is IMO the best by far. And Che was right in his comment on Burn Down The Mission--this is Elton's take on country, inspired by The Band.
Please do the album! 🙏
Yes! Opening credits of Dog Day Afternoon is how I discovered this gem!
Me too!
Great call
Great movie
Every song on this album is good. I particularly liked "Where To Now, St. Peter?"
YES....amazing, one of his all time best!
That's my pick too
Bernie mails Elton a folder with lyrics in it. Elton pulls one out and places it on the piano, and starts reading it over and thinks of what the mood is of the song is, and starts composing. Rarely takes him more than twenty minutes to get the melody down. Yes, its just that simple. Been doing it for almost 56 years. He’s a musical genius.
Well put, that's the way I understood their process as well.
Well, not quite 56 years. They worked together about 8 years or so. After that EJ's music wasn't worth bothering with to me.
Always remember Bernie Taupin, especially the early years. His lyrics are magic. Indian Sunset, The Greatest Discovery, Tower of Babel, Tell Me When The Whistle Blows are just a few. Talking Old Soldier, 60 yrs on. lol I gotta stop! ps. I stood 5 feet from Elton while he was rockin' the keyboard playing Bite Your Lip Get Up and Dance for the encore WAY back in 1979 at SMU College. Him and Ray Cooper is all that was on stage. They killed it!
EJ is a huge Leon Russell fan and you can hear it in his playing. Bernie writes the lyrics, and Elton brings the lyrics into the studio and writes the music on the spot. 🕊❤️🎼
Right. Bernie said that Elton's instant transformation of his lyrics has brought him to tears.
One of my favourite Elton John songs. So much yearning and sensuality! Beautiful! By the way, Bernie Taupin just wrote the lyrics and handed them over to Elton who would read them and get inspired by them to create the music to best express them. Mind-bending process and results. In a documentary I saw about the making of Yellow Brick Road, one of the musicians interviewed (or maybe Elton himself ... I don't remember) said that Elton would read Bernie's lyrics and write a song in about ONE HOUR!!! Considering the astounding quality of the final product, that creative process cannot be described as anything but pure genius.
Yup. Elton was a child prodigy. Could just hear something ONCE and play it back on the piano effortlessly. Dude is a genius.
One of my favorites from Elton. This album is worth a full listen
Bernie writes the lyrics and Elton composes the music!! My favorite EJ song....got the gospel feel GOING!!!
Agree, my favorite EJ album as well
I always seem to gravitate to the darkest song on the album. Talking old Soldiers is the dark one for me on here
Jeez, Louise, 70's Elton John is just off-the-charts amazing.
Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters
Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me
Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy
Border Song
My favorite Elton album. I never tire of this song. Love it.
As the album cover indicates, they were going for an Americana feel in the songs. Both guys were fans of The Band.
Keep hitting those deep cuts. No ‘hits’ on this album, just great songs.
The best album of all time. By any artist.
The Deep Cut Kings strike again!! 😊. Excellent choice!
His first couple of albums his voice had so much soul. A lot of time artists are still using their influences when singing until they find their voice. But I think Elton had his own to begin with.
Check first track on live album. Take me to the Pilot, 1970. It hits you right in the gut.
Yes, this was before all the glam, the outrageous costumes, when he said he wanted to be a soul singer. He learned his style from others, mostly American acts, and perfected it as his own. Early Elton IS the best. He was hungry then, felt he had something to prove because he said he was the most unlikely person to become any kind of star. He thought he was unattractive, had self-esteem issues and people he knew in Britain would tease him and call him Fat Reg. But he had the talent and the world would soon recognize it. He's still a soulful guy, he just went the pop route. Bernie helped elevate him to where he is today. Nobody can jam on a piano like he can, he's a beast. This album is straight fire. Guess you can tell that I'm a fan, LOL. Much respect.
This is another that NEEDS to be in your vinyl collection. 🎶
Elton John and Bernie at their ABSOLUTE finest! Best Elton album IMO. Keep playing songs off this one 👍
Number 1- I had forgotten about this song. Number 2- I forgot how much I liked it. Number 3 - It is going right on my playlist.
Bernie wrote the words and Elton made it into a song, chords and all! Try listening to Amoreena on his live album called 11-17-70. It is Elton in a trio setting! One of the best live albums ever!!
The opening song to the Al Pacino movie, Dog Day Afternoon. This album and Madman captures a moment in time in Elton’s career that was perfection.
Aloha gentleman, 11/17 70 . Is a live gem you will hear Elton jam o. That piano peace and love
The album this is from is incredible, so many styles, so many incredible songs. Bernie writes lyrics, gives them to elton, and elton makes magic.
Wow. This is a deep cut. Love this song. The entire album is awesome.
Tumbleweed Connection is seriously underrated. In my Top 3 EJ albums. Worthy of any Vinyl collection.
Music to the opening of the great film Dog Day Afternoon. Brilliant .
Love this song. I think it was from his best album
Tumbleweed Connection is a masterpiece. The first 5-6 songs on side one are some of my absolute favorite Elton John songs.
Bernie writes all the words, Elton writes all the music, generally in a half hour. Bernie said the miraculous transformation of his lyrics into song would bring him to tears.
Thank you guys! One of my faves. In the early 70's Elton was on a roll, some of the best music ever! Hit - Mona Lisa's and Mad Hatters, All the Young girls love Alice, Grey Seal, Daniel, Don't let the sun go down on me... too many, keep hitting it
I like the 1800's lyrics being brought to life with this rock 70's sound.
Phenomenal album before it turned into the big show...his early stuff is by far his best IMO
Brilliant album full of stunning tracks. Where to now St Peter, Burn Down the Mission and my favourite after this track, Come Down in Time. Whole album 🎉
Also you have to check out "Mellow" from the Honky Chateau album!!!! Bluesy, got that old School Ray Charles feel but probably the sexiest thing Elton ever recorded! Lawd have mercy😍
Ooh, you make me mellow
Oh, you make me mellow
Rocking smooth and slow
Mellow's the feeling that we get
Watching the coal fire glow
Oh, you make me mellow
Oh, I make you mellow
Wrecking the sheets real fine
Heaven knows what you sent me, Lord
But God, this is a mellow time
🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
Thanks for reacting to one of my very favorite EJ songs. A couple of good fun ones are Honky Cat and Elderberry Wine.
Great song!! Incredible album!
My daughter loves this song. When she first heard it, she was I think eight years old. I love this whole album
Haven't heard this in a million years
This album is so, so good
I LOVE this song!! I only discovered it recently, even though I've been listening to Elton John since I was a kid in the 70s. Sooo good, thanks for doing this one!
One of my favorite EJ songs. Played over credits at the beginning of Dog Day Afternoon for some reason. I knew the song before that, though.
One of my favorite Elton tunes .. also plays over the fantastic intro of NYC daily life at the beginning of Dog Day Afternoon.
This is so good! Been traveling La & Che, playing catch up. Love this choice, song, performance and reaction!!!
Excellent analysis. This is one of my favorite songs. It's very complex melodically, to the point where it's difficult to even sing.
BERNIE WRITES THE WORDS LAH AND THEN ELTON WRITES THE MUSIC 😊 , VERSE, CHORUS, MEDLEY, BRIDGE! COMPLETELYYYY UNIQUE, INSANE😮 AND SO SO GOOD! 💯👍
You guys are great!! You know how to pick the best songs from Elton John
Just so great
WHATTTTTT???😮SO YOU'RE STARTING IN ON ( TUMBLEWEED )👍😊OH YEAHHHH! YOU ALREADY DID BURN DOWN THE MISSION BUT WHO CARES, DO IT AGAIN!😊RIGHT ON LAH & CHI, LOVE IT! 💯
Jesus. So GOOD.
One of my faves from Elton 💖💙☮️
Guys Tumble Weed Connection is such an incredible album. Him and Bernie were simply amazing. This entire albums on one of my Play Lists. Bernie was fascinated with The Old American West. You can never go wrong with Elton and Bernie. ❤
This hole album is amazing
Ine if the best writing duos ever. It's mind blowing that Bernie writes lyrics and then sends them to Elton who puts them to music. They're not even in the same room or building when these gems are put to music.
Or in the same COUNTRY
Crushing drums!
One of Elton’s best from his early incredible albums!Gentleman Bernie would first write the lyrics telling his story from an entirely different location then send it to Elton when Elton would fit the music to the lyrics with his own sense of imagination and of course talent. Gus Dudgeon did a masterful job on this song as well as Elton’s first several albums while Paul Buckmaster was responsible for the arrangements on so much of this and other early works by Elton. That is why these songs stand out from Elton’s music from his later years!
Bernie hands over a sheet filled with lyrics and Elton does the rest, amazing when you think about it really.
This is a good one, I remember it playing in the beginning of the Al Pacino movie dog Day afternoon
Burn down the Mission from the same album is a piano masterpiece.
Lol😂😂😂 La “NA we need all that”!!
His best album
Super smooth Elton from his best 70s work. Holy smokes what a band, wooo! Great reaction fellas!
One more time: FYI. Bernie writes a poem(words only) and SENDS it to Elton, who then sits down at the piano and sings those poems. Elton puts Bernies words to music.
Early Elton the best! Madman Across The Water!
Great cut of this one played on “11/17/70” in New York City, one of the more fun live records I’ve ever heard. Just him, Davey Johnstone and Nigel Olson absolutely bouncing as a 3-man force…
I bought this album after seeing the movie, Dog Day Afternoon, with Al Pacino in the theater. The movie opened with this song and I really liked it. Great song.
Great reaction, guys. This album still hits.
The only song on the 1975 Al Pacino movie Dog Day Afternoon, opening scene. Great movie, great song.
I think you would really enjoy Border Song and Your Song. Border Song particularly hits the soul.😊
Check out Madman Across the Water (Extended Version) which should be an extra song on this album it features Mick Ronson on guitar, great version. As always guys great job.
Yes it killer.
The piano tone in this is so nice. One of my favorite EJ jams
Sincerely hope you are gonna do this whole album. It’s brilliant.
ALSO THIS IS THE OPENING TRACK FOR THE 75 FILM ( DOG DAY AFTERNOON ) 👍AL PACINO 😊
This is Elton's "I Wanna Be Leon Russell" album, with this being the best example. Elton worshiped Leon, and Leon championed Elton early on. You can hear Leon's influence both in the piano playing and the vocal phrasing. Elton made sure that Leon was inducted in the R&R HOF, and did a duet album with Leon in Leon's final years. Check out Leon's "A Song For You" - a modern classic. But "Delta Lady" comes close to this one. (Leon is one of the most recorded musicians of all time - his piano is on thousands of hit records).
Love this song. Love this album. I hope you review the whole album, but at least get to "Come Down in Time." Thanks for the review guys!
❤
Taupin writes the words, Elton does the music. Come Down In Time is another excellent cut on an outstanding album.
I don't think there is one bad song on the entire album.
@@clintgolden9192 True Dat
This album is one of his best (along with Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy).
Captain Fantastic and Brown Dirt Cowboy....whoa.....Tell Me When The Whistle Blows!!!!!! Straight FIRE
Elton sounds really good on this song thank you!
This album really grew on me until I now consider it to be some of Elton and Bernie's best work. "Love Song" off this album was written by Leslie Duncan and is a really beautiful song.
According to Elton, Bernie wrote all the lyrics, sent them to Elton who would sit at a piano and put them to music. One album at a time of course.
Elton's best!
Tumbleweed Connection is so good.
Awesome song!! You need to deep dive the album 17-11-70. It’s a live album recorded in New York with an audience of 125. This song is the opening number. It’s totally Raw Elton!!!
"Take Me To The Pilot" is incredible from that album.
KEEP WITH THE ALBUM GUYS, MY FATHERS GUN, TALKING OLD SOLDIERS, COME DOWN IN TIME 😊
All the young girls love Alice
You guys need to check out Elton John LIVE from NYC 1970. There are clips on RUclips
Since you both liked this deep track by the great Elton John, you will both probably like another of his early deep cuts called No Shoe Strings On Louise😮😊. Very heavy bass in this one so be sure to Play Loud!!!😮😊
You need to react to the version of "Madman Across the Water" that was recorded during the Tumbleweed Connection sessions with Mick Ronson on guitar.
Amoreena is the name of Ray William's daughter, Elton's first manager.
NOTE: Bernie writes no musical, " notes " . He isn't even a musician. He writes the words/lyrics, sends the words to Elton. Elton looks over the words...and takes everything from there. The music is all Elton. The singing approach is all Elton. The tempos are all Elton.
Easily Elton's best album, IMO.
Pretty cool hearing the blues influence early in John's career. FYI, Elton had a cup of coffee with Gentle Giant. Imagine that.
How about some. Elderberry Wine another sweet song by Elton
From 1973.
Bernie is strictly lyrics; Elton writes all the music.
Elton has always said that 90% of the time Bernie sends the lyrics 1st and he adds the music to them
Maybe "Where To Now St. Peter?"
Man, you guys really are drawn to the old, obscure Elton John! Tumbleweed Connection is a great early concept album, thanks to Elton's tremendous lyricist Bernie Taupin. Another duo collaboration in music (think Lennon/McCartney, Jagger/Richards, Fagen/Becker, Simon and Garfunkel, Nico and Vinz, many more not named here)-I find collaboration in music is really my favorite aspect.
