    Viper, you're a God of settings! No kidding, your epic lessons are incredible and totally decrease a time of learning!
    Special thanks for lesson about LSD. I've coudnt understand its concept , no even talking about master it.
    Other thanks is for your Fresh Setups for Project Cars 2. Using them I've stopped to fight with car everytime and at least could concentrate on my own skills.
    That amaizing feeling when you understand that there can be only one wrong thing - my skill. No more thousands of destructive thoughts like "does I've set my car well or no? Can I rely on it now, or now or now?" Unfortunately have not enough time and patience for settings and testing them to perfect. So it is also a doubts about them. But now I can concentrate on my skills and mastering the track.
    Used to set bots on 80% and it was challenge for me, because a lack of stability caused by loss of concentration. But now, thanks to your settings I'm competitive with 100+%(mastership and agression) bots and players also.
    I was competitive only with sequental gears, but now starting to learn using H-shifter + clutch in racing "agressive" style and now I'm rather competivie with that stuff. Because of you've relieved me from doubts about car settings, made them relyable for newbies like me.
    I wish I could support you on Patreon and take a Special Lessons from you, but unfortunately have not enough of free money for that:( I think that few bucks is not enough for the job you do for all of us. But when I get an opportunity I'll start doing it as soon as possible! Lookin forward for your lessons and setups (maby formula cars - Rookie,FC. FR3.5, FA ?) and have some I think good ideas for a new Epic Lessons, but will share it with you only when I have an opportunity to sponsor them. Hope it will be soon and you will like them!
    Wish you all the best mate. God Bless.

    There is quite a lot of useful information on this topic missing. The two most important ones to me would be shifting time and the actual power/torque curve.
    To begin with shifting time. With modern sequential gearboxes shifting takes milliseconds and thus have little delay on the duration you can apply power to the wheels. However, with manual gearboxes and older automatic gearboxes shifting might take considerably longer (for manual gearboxes this depends a lot on the driver). If you have your gear ratios closer together you have to shift more often on each straight and this can mean you might lose precious time during which you can't apply power to the wheels. You're gain on having more power can be lost because you can apply it less often. This is something to take into consideration.
    When it comes to the actual power/torque curve. This is something more difficult to determine as it requires you to know the torque curve of the car you want to adjust the gearing for. To make this point clear imagine one car with a very high revving engine with a large turbo that only works well at high RPMs. This means there is a very high peak power without much power at low and mid RPM. This is similar to many F1 engines over the past decades and that is also mostly true for other racing oriented engines. However, road cars nowadays can have different turbo configurations (tri-turbo, turbo's with variable geometry, electric turbo's, etc.) that reduce turbo-lag and can massively increase the power output at lower and especially mid RPMs. The result can be that your peak power isn't as much a peak and might be more like a plateau. In this case having longer gear a bit further apart can still result in having (close to) peak power all the time.
    Knowing these two things is important in deciding gear ratios. But for most racing cars and drivers that don't shift manually the principles in the video will apply with no problem.

      I like to use the stock ratios but adjust the final drive. I feel that the manufacturer got the gears matched to the caracteristics of the car pretty well to begin with i just tinker to even them out a bit

    • @camilobermudez6683
      @camilobermudez6683 4 года назад

      Yeah, actually that is what i was thinking. But, how a beginner like me can figure out all these details to determine the best set up?

    • @ramjb
      @ramjb 4 года назад +1

      @@camilobermudez6683 Watch the torque/power curves. If your engine gives top power at a very narrow band at the top of the rpm graph, look for a close gear ratio at those high RPMs to keep your car for as long as possible within that power band.
      If it's more of a plateau/wider area where power peaks (instances the OP was talking about with more modern street cars where high power is available across a wider band of RPM than, in, say, a F1 car would have) then you can aim for a somewhat wider gear ratio that will net you better acceleration in first gear (being shorter than with a CGR) while extracting some extra kph off your highest gear (being longer), yet keep your engine in that optimal RPM band where it's power is peaking.
      This video also shows the general idea of how to set your car in general, but tracks also matter a lot, because it's not the same driving on a slow track full of turns where acceleration is everything than in a very fast one with long straights where top speed is king. You have to tailor your transmission not just to the power curve of your engine, but also with the track you're about to drive at in mind.

    Never used to have a clue on the ratios etc, so just used to piss about with them and hope it was right (in career only). It never was and I'd always end up screaming down a straight at about 90 with the engine sounding like a crying child. Thanks to this, I can go a little more into it and improve my times and placings. Life begins at 40, and a little help from Viperconcept...

    Gran Turismo developers should've included these kind of tutorials in their games. The first Gran Turismo I played was Gran Turismo 3 A-Spec, but I didn't own that game. Gran Turismo 5 and 6 were the first ones I owned and got into (I missed out on the GT4), but I never bothered much with those settings shown here because of my lack of knowledge about them. Once I came across your channel about 3 years ago I've been paying attention and learning a few things, here and there about those settings, racing line and etc. I could've also done my research on my own too, but I like how you explain them, teach and give tips. So thank you very much.
    Another thing, I'm not aware if you have any video about manual shifting which I would love see and learn about it. I've been trying to race using manual shifting now, but It doesn't look like I'm doing it right because: when I downshift sometimes it kind of hit redline/stays revving the engine and I have to either brake or upshift again. So I'm probably downshifting when I shouldn't(?). Good thing I don't drive in real life yet or else :D

    Thanks for the cookie! I always think that the main goal with transmission setup is to have approximately the same gap between gears to avoid holes in acceleration...
    And in the real world, one of the best final ratio for street legal car is 4.444 or 4.777 for slow tracks to maximize the acceleration.

  • @lluismr97
    @lluismr97 6 лет назад +1

    Keep in mind that it is the ratio between the gear ratios what has to be close not the difference, going from a 3.0 to a 1.5 is the same as going from a 1.0 to a 0.5 although the difference is less on the latter. In addition to that you should try to have a bigger ratio of gear ratios on the first gears (you can tolerate more difference in lower gears because of the increased torque at the wheels and very close 1st and 2nd gear might leave you with a useless 2nd) than on your final gears (a big difference in 5th to 6th is done in street cars for fuel economy but renders your last gear useless).

    I think it's important to mention shift times as well. A super fast shifting dual clutch transmission can get away with the close gear ratios, but a standard manual transmission will lose more time in the shifting that it gains from staying in the power band longer.

    2:14 You can also understand those numbers as the amplification factor of the torque from the engine:
    2.150 would mean that the engine delivers 1 N.m of torque to the gearbox and then the gearbox delivers 2.150 N.m to the differential.

    What this video doesn't mention, is that in some games, changing the gear ratios involves a bit of a a tradeoff between top speed and acceleration.
    For example, in Need For Speed: Pro Street on my Wii, I used something of a mixed setup with my drag racer, an 873 BHP 1968 Dodge Challenger R/T: The first 2-3 gears go by fairly quickly, while the last 3-4 gears (It's a 6 gear car, with my setup) go by fairly slowly. Of course, I'm still able to do a quarter mile in 7.2 seconds, and a 13.4 half mile, so it's not all THAT slow...
    I have it set up like that so that the first 2-3 gears let me get off the line quickly, and the remaining 3-4 gears get me a higher top speed. At the end of the quarter mile, I'm going at about 200 MPH, while the end of my half mile only sees me doing about 210-220 MPH. That's a fairly sharp drop on the acceleration curve, but it works perfectly with my driving style.
    This is a huge improvement over what I used to have: Before I really got into the gearing, I was running into an issue, where my car was taking almost 12 seconds to do the quarter mile, and it was redlining on 6th gear at about 170 MPH by the end of it. I couldn't even do a half mile at all, since my engine would blow (It's a mechanic in the game that redlining for too long, normally about 10 seconds, would grenade the engine, and the half mile would've had me redlining for almost triple that). By lengthening all the gears, not only did I increase my top speed, but I was able to get my race times reduced by almost 2 seconds on the quarter mile.
    All thanks to proper gearing...

    What about setting gears for different corners and considering the deceleration effect on the differential. For example i set the diff to induce oversteer while decelerating so i can have better turn in in a corner. But if i change gears mid corner i might end up over steering too much cause of the small deceleration that occurs while changing gears.

      you should have heard all the hate i got in online lobbies full of bugattis and the like, sure they would beat me on the starting straight, but once the corners began i would pull away heavily, and people who tried to keep up generally died hitting the barriers

    Awesome tutorial Viperconcept - but as someone that is already near being a PRO driver, yet nowhere near being an ALIEN. As a GENERAL RULE for yourself, do you prefer to setup the final gear down the longest straight to BOUNCE on the rev-limiter for a short period - but assumes then that all other gears are even quicker on the rest of the track. Or do you prefer that you DON'T QUITE? REACH the top speed of the final gear at the end of the straight, if it's either a 4, 5 or 6 gear-box car, and you can change the gear ratio's for it?

    • @viperconcept
      @viperconcept  6 лет назад

      Ehm... not offense but I think you confuse the concept of "final gear". Maybe I'm misunderstanding your comment.
      I mean, for example, a car with 6 gears, the 6th gear isn't the "final gear". The final gear is a tool that you use to increase or descrease the speed of ALL the gears.
      However, to answer to your question, if you hit the rev limiter on the highest gear on straight, that means you failed the transmission setup, because it's too short. In any case you don't have to hit the rev limter at max speed.
      For that reason I suggest you to do some practice laps before racing to understand the top speed you'd reach on the longest straight of the track. Then, you can setup the transmission.

    So this means with less powerfull cars I start with lower numbers and higher gaps between the frist 2-3 gears and later on keep the higher gears closer together? Or are they all spread out more? I try to setup an Audi Quattro, but to be hones in Forza Horizpn 4 wich will not be your favourite game... but maybe you can help me anyways with that mission?

    I have a question, What would be the best gear ratios/ transmission settings for a car that is 270HP and wants to power slide corners, and have great acceleration coming out of corners. I have played a bit with the setting and with what I have learnt from here, but I am finding it difficult to get the best transmission, can anyone help please!
