I have no idea why Dan was ever against this. its absolutely gorgeous and was the perfect remake as far as I could tell. for me I did that magical thing for me where the game looked exactly like I remember it looking as a kid.
They fucked up a couple things. 1. Wanders face, it just looks off in addition to missing the clear anime influence the original had. 2. The colors and tone just feels off to me very often was overblown in the original, but that's part of it's charm.

Just remember Dan, the ps3 version has bugged out grappling physics compared to the original, while this basically has the ps2 game running under its hood for maximum accuracy, much like the recent Demons souls remake.
I would kill to see Dan do a remastered completes on this game. It's so fucking amazing. And yes, it would be hilarious if he just dubbed the audio from the old videos over it.

Hard mode actually puts more sigils on the colossuses, it's a really cool way of creating difficulty for players (like Dan) who have beaten this game before I think you had to unlock it in the original? But it's neat to see it available from the start, given that this is a remake and many have probably already beaten the game before
Difficulty settings should NEVER be shunned because it not only allows people who don't have gaming as their entire primary hobby/job to play and enjoy a game, it also allows people with disabilities to play games they would otherwise not be able to play.
I see it as also adding replayability and extra challenge depending on the game. Like in RE7 madhouse. Or Timesplitters 2 which changed the level depending on difficulty.
Dan has said before on streams that he agrees with that line of thinking. I have no doubt it was just used as a joke like the rest of his 'Blasphemy!' jokes
But there are better ways to make the game more easy. Or developers need to make better ways to have "difficulty" settings. A lot of them are just flat out lazy with it. Making ememies more spongey. Not really incresing the difficulty, just increase how long it takes Games could be easier from certain items. But if difficulty options need to be there, change enemy placement, only increase how much damage they do but do not increase health. If a game has puzzles, exploration and combat, seperate difficulty options for both. Actually, just give us seperate options to tweak but keep the easy, normal, hard as templates. Mega man 11 suffered from this. I wanted the checkpoints of normal, weapon energy to refill when and die, and I wanted infinite lives. But I couldn't because certain elements were tied to certain difficulties
They should be shunned at every opportunity because they are never done well. It just results in higher difficulties becoming cheap damage spunges and the AI being kneecapped because they need to appeal to the mentally challenged Aside from devaluing the experience for everyone else. Because games aren't for everyone. Nothing is for everyone and that line of thinking has killed too many franchises with mediocre garbage appealing to a "wider audience" that never wanted to play it to begin with. Anyone can play, not everyone should be pandered to. That only creates generic garbage Easy mode shouldn't exist. It's existence in games merely leads to worse games. There should only exist intended and hard mode rather then developers kneecapping the game to appeal to a fringe Want to argue it, Pathologic 2 got slammed for being "too difficwult" for punishing you if you die. Yet if these punishments weren't a thing death would become trivial and savescumming the method around it. You'd never have a reason to gut someone and slice out their organs to sell them for money or trade them for food. No reason to enter a random house in a plague ridden district to ransack it looking for food and clean water Hell it also destroys newcomers perspectives of certain games genres as enemies might do half damage, be completely retarded and die in a few hits. Say the original Dawn of War and it's expansions where a squad of guardsmen with glorified flashlights could take down a Space Marine in a few hits

Modern games have difficulty options changing how hard the puzzles are and exploration. Difficulty options aren't inheritly bad. It's just done bad in a lot of games
in its defense, it was groundbreaking and very experimental, nothing was ever done like it, it could obviously be done way better now, but reminder, SotC came out in 2005, a LOT of games didn't have as good of controls as they do now.

One time when I was working in the waterways, we were loading the water weed onto the truck with pitchforks and saw a big spider. I didn't wanna kill it so I tried to move it out of the way with the fork, but it disappeared somehow. Didn't think anything of it. Later when we were dumping the weeds, I undid the latches on the truck and then felt something tickle the back of my neck. Thought it was grass so I grabbed it and threw it on the ground and just about shit myself when I saw the "grass" crawl and skitter away. Fecker was hiding in the hood of my jersey the whole time.
Maybe nothing really reaches the sense of scale in this game, but I think one game that comes close is in that final part of Jak 3 when you're chasing the giant final boss and then you have to climb onto it because it turns out it's basically a literal moving level
most people don't realise that wander was meant to slowly after every kill to have cursed skin and horns eventually but that got removed and added as a skin you apply
@@-Infex- 3rd person VR is a thing. I've done it by modding GTA and it works surprisingly well. Hellblade is the only official 3rd person VR experience I've played and it was one of the most memorable VR titles I played last year.

No kidding, seeing reaction videos to it popping up in my sidebar and just yesterday I was recommended (And watched) a video where some guy built a miniature stargate with an infinity mirror, working DHD, ring and chevron locking system.
yeah that's kind of the point of the game. Wander is going around killing these giant beasts, in a world where they don't hurt anyone, just to resurrect the princess, and if I recall not for any reason except he wants to be with her.
Fun fact: In the original SOTC on PS2, if you hold or wedge the "gallop" button (X or whatever) and let the horse run aimlessly, it'll never get hung up on edges or corners... you can leave it and It'll traverse the map for hours!
If you care to check it out, there's a game called Praey for the Gods in EA right now on steam that's directly inspired by SotC. It's fun, but definitely not as polished. Much smaller team made it.
I had the same opinion Dan did about this remake for a long time. You don't need to remake a nearly perfect game. But seeing how Bluepoint did it from a Digital Foundry video sold me on it. Almost the entire original game code is still running underneath, but now it looks even better. So all the physics and interactions are the same, movement is the same, but it's absolutely gorgeous.
i love the contrast between one day the XIII remake which is objectively terrible, and the next day the Shadow of the Colossus remake ending with Dan saying "Remakes are good"
Being able to play The Last Guardian at a decent framerate is better incentive to get a PS5 then all of the launch titles combined. When I played SotC no PS2 I was mostly a console gamer (my PC sucked) and didn't care as much about the framerate but by the time TLG came out I was used to 60+ fps so it was brutal trying to play it. I finished it and it's a great game but it was rough on my poor eyes lol.

Technically you don’t unlock a rocket launcher, you just unlock the rockets. You have the launcher from the beginning of the game.
