Two questions: any idea why that substance was located between the mat and the platter AND should I keep the Ortofon 14 cart or update to a new Audio Technica one?

I'm glad I saw this so I can point you in the right direction. Last year I purchased a Technics SL-D202, which appears very similar to the SL-D30. I wanted to see if I could do a little tweaking to it and found a gentleman on You Tube who does nothing but old turntables. It seems your mat issue is a common problem, but isn't something you can't fix. The man in question goes by the name of Turntable Guy, give his channel a look see.

The technics rubber mats are prone to deteriorating over time. I believe heat is a factor so it may have been stored in an attic. The mats also lose their flexibility from this. It should be kinda floppy. I inherited an SL-D3 (a few videos on my channel with it) and the mat was in good shape, but my cover was not as good as yours. The older SL-D3 has an S tonearm and standard headshell and other similar features, but no record size detector. It has a switch. Also, the repeat function on the SL-D3 lets you select the exact # of times you want it to repeat in case you want to repeat it 5 but not 6 times 🙂The hinges can crack, and mine did. So look out for that. Luckily there are replacement kits out there.

I have the exact same model, bought for $20 because it had a broken tone arm support. Easily fixed, and I love this turntable. Quiet, all features work, and I think the P mount was a great innovation, pity it never got popular.. it results in a very light tonearm that tracks really well at low weights, eg 1.25g. I replaced the Panasonic cart with the same AT one you've ordered. From what I've read, the ortofon is comparable but a little less bright. Either will make you smile.

Cool turntable. I have a SL-QD3 Technics. Needs the same attention that yours needs and received. This has inspired me to clean mine up and give it a spin. Well done video.

I love and appreciate the auto stop feature too. It’s so nice when your busy and the tone arm just returns even semi auto would be good. That oil may be a secretion from the rubber mat. If it comes back, you’ll know.

You can also a banana connector for the ground wire. It's a perfect for in that socket

That mat will continue to degrade and give off nasty oil like substance. Need to just replace the mat. I just picked one up, as is, where is, not hooked up. But it was cheap. It also will not stop. Another problem is the cueing platform sticks, doesn't lower enough. So I will be addressing that first. I can manually turn off turntable.

I enjoyed this clean up & the final result, I married into a family of vinyl lovers one member is a successful ska dj doing large events at 66 years old but I got his younger brother a goth & he has some seriously expensive gear & personally signed albums into vinyl when he would babysit for free in return for using my technics seperates hifi system. I am due to retire next year so bought possibly my last set up recently of rega planar 3 with Marantz cd & pm 6007 usb , being so old I have a decent back cataloque of my soul/ funk & easy listening & now a large hard drive of hires flac files for convenenience. Where would we be without Music?

That's the platter breaking down, it's the petroleum oils that the rubber is made of.
