    I actually think that this is the best Disney sequel.
    There is, however, one thing that really bothers me and that is that they insisted on connecting the antagonists to Scar. (This has been the problem in many sequels.)
    Since Zira was never shown in the first movie and there were no lionesses who liked Scar, Zira and her pride should have been some unknown lions who decided to take over the Pridelands. Connection to Scar seems forced and unconvincing.

    • @dotty5023
      @dotty5023 4 года назад +14

      You sort just have to think why she wasn’t there and then everything makes sense For example Zira could have left to take care of her children because Kovu and vitani might have been babies at that time so she left to find them a place to live when returning finds out what happened and attacks simba

    • @ninap5613
      @ninap5613 4 года назад +18

      @@dotty5023 Well, yes, but as I said it is always forced. If there was no connection to Scar, everything would be perfectly fine.

    • @ninap5613
      @ninap5613 3 года назад +12

      @Izzy Kash "the connection was that she was a close follower to him and her son was hand chosen by scar because he was the only alfa out of the outlanders"
      Zira was never mentioned in TLK1 and no lioness was shown to show sympathy for Scar. Therefore, her "loyalty" to Scar in TLK2 is forced.
      Regarding Kovu, Scar isn't his father so it makes no sense for Scar to choose him to be the heir. Why would Scar even bother with this? Also, who is Kovu's father? It isn't Scar, so it means that there was another adult male lion in the Pridelands during Scar's reign. What happened to him? It all makes no sense.
      On the other hand, if Zira's gang came from some other land and tried to take over the Pridelands, all these problems disappear.

    There are 4 things I wish this movie did.
    1. Show some flashbacks of Scar and Zira together, and when he chose Kovu to take up after him.
    2. Another Simba & Nala duet.
    3. Another Timon & Pumbaa song. Hell, even a song by Zazu would’ve been nice.
    4. An actual one on one fight between Simba and Zira, during the final battle scene. With Simba eventually winning of course. Before Kiara and Kovu interrupt.

    • @edgartrujillo5030
      @edgartrujillo5030 4 года назад +2

      Considering the they added a Zazu song to the original, I have to disagree with your 3rd point because it just felt off compared to the rest of the movie's songs. Also, you do realize that Zira is the same age as Simba and Nala, right? Zira was not involved with Scar romantically. She was just a follower/worshipper and Kovu is not Scar's blood-related son. Scar just picked him as his successor.

      Uhm... It’s not hard to explain why there are so many people that hate this movie (including myself): The animation is horrible, the characters are terrible (they even ruined the characters from the original movie like Simba, Nala, Rafiki, Timon & Pumbaa), the songs are just annoying (including the background music), Kovu and Kiara are *one of the worst movie couples of all time* 🤮, the villain is weird ( literally *NOTHING* compared to Scar), the story is boring and the only “good“ thing in this movie is probably the message and even that is definitely not as powerful or beautiful than in the original movie! All in all the movie is definitely NOT a worthy sequel to the brilliant movie “The Lion King“ (that is by the way one of the greatest movies of all time) and is a good example that a masterpiece like the Lion King definitely shouldn’t have a sequel! 😉

    Something that bothered me when I rediscovered this film was Kovu's relationship with his siblings; it felt underdeveloped and I didn't know why. That was until I read the film's script online and confirmed a theory; Kovu doesn't share a word of dialogue with either Nuka or Vitani, nor does he reference them to other characters.
    Well, that's not wholly true, there are three instances that count; he growls back at Vitani when she ask to fight as cubs, he tries to defend Nuka when Zira gets on his case for not watching Kovu, and he tries to dig his brother out of the logs after the chase with Simba, but that's all. Otherwise we have no idea how he feels about them; how did he respond to Nuka's resentment? Does he get along with his sister? What shared interests do they have?

      @Lance Keith
      This is something that Jambareeqi said in his review that would have made for a less confusing story. What if centuries ago, there was a pride that used to live at Pride Rock but their leader decides "Let's move, let's take over other rocks." Centuries past and a descendant of that pride decides "You know what, we need to take back Pride Rock, it belongs to us."
      It's a different idea that could have been used to follow the same story without creating a vast of plotholes. The only reason they tried to force Scar in this second story is just for fan service. Nothing more, nothing less.

      It wasn’t even straight to DVD. Technically it was originally on VHS tape which is a very crappy format but it also masks the weak animation. Watching the movie on DVD and especially the Blu-Ray rerelease is jarring because I finally see every animation flaw in HD glory where the old VHS low resolution hid the movie’s flaws. Kid me who grew up with the tapes actually thought the sequel looked better and it does if you watch them on an old TV using VHS.

    I completely disagree with you on zira. For me she wipes the floor with scar as a villain. Her motivations made sense. She was close and loyal to scar and she would do anything to avenge him and continue his legacy. She was also far more menacing than him. Where scar came off as a man child zira came off as a genuine psychopath. She was also not as cowardly as him.

    • @princesspikachu3915
      @princesspikachu3915 2 года назад +8

      Zira is totally unlikeable and that’s what makes her a good villain. She used her family to get what she wanted. She filled their heads with lies. Her emotional neglect as a parent lead to Nuka’s death. After Nuka died trying to earn the love of his mommy dearest (and for personal glory too) Zira blames Kovu for killing “your own brother!!!!” She also threatens Vitani with death when Vitani says “enough”. Zira also would rather die by suicide than accept help and Simba’s forgiveness. The only villain more despised and evil would be Judge Frollo from the original Hunchback movie. And that’s because he does the same but worse.

      But the point is that it's unexplained the reason why she decided to be loyal to Scar nor what she did actually admired about him, considering that everyone in the original inc. the hyenas was tiring about his poor leadership. Zira doesn't exist until the sequel was written.

      Scar’s motivation still makes sense. He was a selfish prick who wanted the throne, simple as that. The books try to go into further depth with scar and Mufasa’s relationship, but as far as the movies go, that’s it. Zira was a bit more sympathetic, but when it comes to motive comprehension, both characters are on the same playing field. Also, Jeremy irons gave scar a complex personality, he wasn’t always angry or plotting. Contrast that with zira, who is very one dimensional and whose VA went way over the top with annoying intensity.

    I actually have to say that I feel like lion king 2 was better than the first. Obviously the first is a masterpiece but I loved the themes of the second one much more. Fighting against your destiny (kovu and simba (to a degree), wanting to be loved for who you are not because you are a princess (kiara) and maybe in kovus case even parental abuse because zira literally turns him into scar 2.0. I also loved the use of Symbolism mostly in the third act if I remember right, like kovu seeing scar when he sees his reflection or kiara missing half of herself when she is seperated from Kovu. Kids won't get these small things but as an adult you really apreciate those things. One of the best scenes that really nailed the theme of going against your destiny in my opinion is when Simba looks up to the sky to ask his father what he would do when he is faced with the choice to either accept the other lions (which is the opposite of what Mufasa did with the Hyenas) or to reject them again. After looking up he looks down and smiles realising what he has to do. I Just loved that, same with kovu who goes against his destiny by not becoming scar even tho he was trained to be him and even looks like him in the end, he chooses love instead of hate which consumed Scar and Zira and let to the deaths of both. I hope you got a new perspective on the movie after reading this massive text block.

      You can say you LIKE it better than the original, but to say it's objectively better is incorrect just by looking at the difference in quality. The plot holes, the huge animation downgrade and numerous blunders, the off character models, questionable character choices etc. make it worse than the original. All the things you mentioned; were bias and only things that you enjoyed rather than looking at it objectively. The original had many symbolic moments too, you might've just missed them.
      Not to mention, the orginal has: won many awards, is the highest grossing hand drawn animated film of all time, holds the world record for VHS sales, has a Broadway show based on it, a live action movie which ranks number 8 on the highest grossing films of ALL TIME, documentaries, a TV spin off series, Disneyland festivals, countless merchandising, it's critically ranked higher than the sequel on every platform etc. The original Lion King has the longevity and quality that the sequel can never even dream to achieve or reach.

    • @fuckalldisneyremakesorigin5560
      @fuckalldisneyremakesorigin5560 2 года назад +4

      Firstly let's point out those things
      The original had a much better pacing and better side characters. In the second movie nothing really important happens until the last act, the side characters are pointless and do very little to contribute to the plot and the outsiders have an half-baked redemption considering they wanted to be loyal to Scar but then they stopped after Kiara said "We Are One". In the original we see Simba growing up throughout the movie and learning a lot of lessons. The story is also able to give you a lot of emotion and impact: in one moment Scar successfully kills Mufasa and takes over the throne starting his tyrannical rule, a major character dies onscreen and the villain wins the first round while the main hero was forced to exile. Timon and Pumbaa makes the story working very well, they are not only comic relievers but also wise characters that teach the main hero how to forget about the past and also share a lot of things with him (such as being pained by the past and watching stars), also Pumbaa has a lot of relatability. They start off as "doing nothing" buffons to badass friends who helps you against the villain. This is character development...
      The original was a story who deals with themes of life, grief about the past, family relations, responsability and guilt.
      Kiara isn't much of a deep or relatable character like her father...
      Her father in the first was a spoiled brat but that's because he's just a child being a child, after that he learned from his mistakes. His vision about the world also changes after his experience in the gorge and developes the character throughout the story. Simba is someone who is traumatized about his father's loss and can't get rid of those memories, he also refuse to take his responsabilities because he thinks no one needs him as he's "guilty" of his father's death until he learns that his responsability is still inside him and that whatever happens in the past he just learns from it and must just move on from it. He gets his proper character arc. He also had clear goals.
      Kiara never had any significant flaws nor she had something to learn. She's not destestable as character but she has just no much relatability and development in comparison to her father nor does she express any feelings and desires like the latter did.

    • @PeninsulaPaintings

      @@fuckalldisneyremakesorigin5560 Also, Kiara is basically like: "Daddy, you're lying about Kovu attacking you! I've know him for a whole day and a half, he'd NEVER do that!"

      "BuT daDdy, I lOvE hiM!"
      *Runs away to be with the one who was just accused of brutally trying to kill her own father.*

    It isn't the story of the Lion King though. This is a story about a lioness coming into her own, yes, but the biggest message of the film was very different from the lion king. In the lion king, Simba has to fight the hyenas and Scar, and kill in order to win his pride and his woman. A very typical fight to get a reward, and win reward. Kiara, however, learns to be herself while becoming a leader, and the movie illustrates that violence isn't always necessary, that people can come together and get past their differences, and that "evil" is not necessarily black and white, and is more about how a person's situation can shape how they have to be, but that you can overcome the situation of your birth

      Lance Keith no. Only Zira and her children were banished. In The Lion Guard, we see Zira’s pride but with less lionesses. It’s clear that Zira planned her revenge plot early on and tried to recruit as many lionesses to her side as possible, alongside Kovu’s plan(with Kiara).

    • @bopsop2246
      @bopsop2246 5 лет назад

      Lance Keith I think Kovu(along with Vitani) were born before Scar’s death because Scar chose Kovu to be his heir. Maybe they were both adopted when Zira went ‘far enough’ looking for food (Scar said Sarabi didn’t look ‘hard enough’)

      Lance Keith well, Nala may have got pregnant during the love song, and lionesses are pregnant for around 100 days if my mind serves me right. Let’s just assume Kovu was found 1 day before Simba returned or something. In real life mothers are separated from their pride for a few weeks after cubs are born(to raise them) so it could somehow explain why she didn’t appear in the battle in the end of lion king 1994

      What I disliked about her was that nice she met Kovu, she was basically like a lioness in heat incapable of thinking reasonably. Her dad came back with severe injuries and she goes around calling him "You will never be Mufasa" and defends someone who originally only approached her to get a chance at killing Simba. Plus, Kovu tried to pounce on Simba once but got interrupted by Kiara. She barely knew Kovu but she went against Simba who raised her since childhood. Plus, the fact that Simba's overprotectiveness wasn't wrong if we consider the three times Kiara got close to death. Once, with the crocodiles and Kovu help her. Second, with Zira about to pounce on her but Simba was around, third with her disobeying Simba and nearly dying during her first hunt. Was Simba really overprotective? From my point of view, Kiara would not have reached adulthood if Simba wasn't overprotective. She was gullible, too naive, too kind and forgiving and too lovestruck that she even seemed rude. She didn't seem to think with her brains but with her heart. Good thing a pride is ruled by a lion and not a lioness. If she ruled instead of Kovu, the pride would be killed by enemies.

    This was a horrible explanation to an opinion. For a budget cut in half, the animation was wonderful. It's a children's movie anyways. The kids don't notice a difference. Only judgmental adults. Not to mention the differences you mentioned happen to EVERY sequel Disney has released. It's a pretty bad talking point if you didn't personally donate to production.
    2. The fire in the 2ed felt more realistic. Idk what you're on, but as a child, it soiked more fear for me than the 1st movie. I sensed danger in the first movie. But In the 2ed the fire was the threat and moved so rapidly and violently I was actually scared for her.
    Also. The first movie is based off hamelt. The 2ed is bases off Romeo and Juliet. Everything you mentioned that was similar is literally similar in EVERY DISNEY MOVIE, it had nothing to do with comparable plots. And the fight at the end of the 2ed brought PEACE. Not more devide. It had a better message for children, whom the movie was made for.
    This was made by an extremely snobby person.

I am very curious and interested in knowing what Kovu, Kiara, Nuka, Vitani, and Zira will look like. I also think they should throw some flashbacks of Scar and Zira choosing Kovu to take his place. I am not saying you should learn to appreciate the little things because you have every right to have your own standard, but I don't need to share it.
    So If TLK 2 is your standard for "bad", like if that is your mindset, I'm out. I find it superungrateful, disregarding, demanding... simply blind in a way to be honest.

      "Yeah dude, everything is subjective."
      That's not quite true, there are plenty of things in storytelling that can be objectively measured and assessed.
      "So If TLK 2 is your standard for "bad", like if that is your mindset, I'm out. I find it superungrateful, disregarding, demanding... simply blind in a way to be honest."
      Or you could see it as an engagement for discussion. If it's objectively bad, then we can look at the elements of the film that make it that way, see how they outweigh or negate the good ones, and discuss how it could have been done better. If it's objectively good, we could talk about the elements that contribute to that quality, how it compares t the first film, minor stuff that could have been done better.
      Bottom line, attributing an objective judgement to a film is not inherently a means to close discussion or be blind; positions can still be contested,and new perspectives/ideas can be generated.

    *Cutely gives everyone some of the lion king two book for no reason*
    Lion King 2
    Prologue
    “It’s time.” Rakifi said gently, walking out onto the gold-ish covered rock. My mother gently picked me up by my scruff and stood up from her previous position. Rafiki did some strange motions with his hands and my mother started walking towards him. I wondered what was happening as we padded closer to Rafiki. Rafiki hugged both my parents and put his hands below me. Suddenly my mother dropped me into his grasp and my fathers bird bowed. The wind was full of leaves today, I noted. Rafiki takes me to the edge of the rock where he stood before and lifted me up to the sky so all the animals below me could see.
    The feathers blew past the animals and the animals all said their own unique noises. I smiled, not really knowing what was going on but delighted to be out of the den. Suddenly light shed on me from the sky and I moved my paws happily. I giggled and flicked my tail happily. The feathers blew past me and towards my parents. They drifted past my paws and I took it as an opportunity to slap them playfully. Rafiki lifted his head up and the animals all bowed, making their unique noises once again. I heard a grey wrinkly animal trumpet loudly and flinched back in surprise. Suddenly a flock of white birds flew over my parents, presumably frightened by those huge wrinkly animals.
    Rafiki suddenly reached down with one hand and grabbed some red paint. He smeared it over my forehead and I looked at him, then my parents came over to me. I opened my mouth in joy and both my parents nuzzled me proudly. I didn’t know what I’d done right, but I knew I loved them. I loved them infinitely. Suddenly two of my fathers strange family members spoke up. The little creamy one spoke first and the hairless one responded. They continued having their own little conversation and suddenly the cream one let out a burp. They continued talking and Rafiki joined in, correcting them about something. I looked at my mother, confused. She blinked reassuringly back at me while both my fathers friends exclaimed loudly.
    Chapter One
    I bounced out of the den excitedly, stopping for a minute to catch my breath and flick my tail. I looked at the ground to see any bugs or anything new before looking down at the huge Savannah. “Wow!” I exclaimed loudly, flicking my tail once more and bouncing down the stone steps. “Woah!” My father ran up to me and grabbed my scruff before I could go any further. He lifted me up and stood back. He dropped me and I giggled. I tried to rush back to the den to maybe fool him into playing hide and seek but he put his paw in the way to stop me. “Where do you think you’re going in such a hurry?” He picked me up with his paw and I let out a small complaint. “Daddy! Let go!” I laughed while he put my beside his other foot. “Well, I just want you to be careful.” He said while a gorgeous orange and yellow butterfly flew towards us. I got up and chased it. “Rawr!” I tried to pounce on it but fell short by quite a lot.

    If the do a second live action I hope they keep it like the original, no point changing a perfect movie, just polish the graphics to fit modern times. I was disappointed in the first one, got all hyped, watched it, don’t have that “I want to watch again” vibe

    Sorry, I COMPLETELY disagree with your assessment that it was the same story.
    Lion King 1 was an allegory for Hamlet. Lion King 2 was an allegory for Romeo and Juliet. Lion King 1 was about redemption, and Simba learning what it means to be a king. Lion King 2 was about love overcoming hate, and learning to put aside the wounds of the past. Yes, superficially both movies were about a lion cub and about them growing up, but the themes and symbolism were completely different.
    I'll concede you're right that Lion King 2 was lower budget and the team didn't have the manpower to give the same production values with the animation. But your claim that this movie doesn't have a reason to exist, or that it doesn't have a thematic identity distinct from the first movie, is just totally wrong.

    It may not be created with the same quality as the first film, but I actually love this movie more than the first. I definetly wouldn't call it a bad sequel (especially considering how low that clearly gets with Disney lol😅). I think it's absolutely great. The story is legitimately interesting and you can see there's heart put into it and the actors performances. Zira's performance was also menacing even if her character wasn't fleshed out. I was actually more interested and attached to Kovu and Kiara, than I was with characters in the first movie. Obviously nothing beats our attachment to Simba himself, but Kovu is a close second for me.

    When you think about it, Simba's Pride is literally just Pocahontas, just with lions.
    Think about it: You've got the two separate clans/prides who are at each others throats.
    The leaders of each clan/pride despise each other.
    The daughter of one clan falls in love with the son of the other.
    In the end, the two clans have a war.
    The main character, daughter of the clan, jumps in and shows the father that violence is not the answer, the clans join as one.
    However, despite that, I still do quite enjoy this film.

      I think it would be good if someone made a platonic version of that Romeo and Juliet story. Basically, two people from warring clans become friends and attempt to stop violence between the groups, their violent counterparts also playing a role.

    I just saw this movie with my mom. I was skeptical but I actually loved it. It was a worthy sequel. I loved seeing Simba notice that he had similar struggles as daughter Kiara. Kiara was having fun. Simba also liked being free and not being king liked but was forced upon responsibility but Simba is a better father than Mufasa and as because Simba realizes he just wants his daughter to be happy even if that means she doesn’t want to be Queen.

    I tend to go easier on the animation (besides the aforementioned conspicuous looking fire) since it was one of the first DTV sequels that they seemed to be TRYING to make look at least halfway like the original theatrical. The Aladdin and Beauty and the Beast sequels basically looked like feature length TV episodes, while I can at least appreciate them trying to maintain some of the cinematic details and texturing in TLK 2, even if it's still kinda lacking. Later sequels would improve in that regard at least.
    Your theory about Timon and Pumbaa doing double time for Zazu interests me though. Really I didn't think his replacement VA was that bad (he filled in for him in the series too) but it would make sense if it was the reason he was demoted a little. While the duo are characteristically buffoons to some level, Zazu worked better in the 'incompetent baby sitter' role since he was powerless for reasons beyond his control (small bird vs lions) and he was more a stuffy sarcastic straight man to their mischief, while Timon and Pumbaa just have to be idiots who barely even try. Heck, they fail three times, they could have just had Simba rotate between all three characters when one fails, would have made him seem less dumb at least.
    I do think they stretch the duo's shtick in this film a bit too much, not as many good one liners. I don't really mind Rafiki getting upped in the comic relief angle though, I feel they maintained his wisdom better despite making him more proactively silly, which in fairness was still a sort of vibe we got from him in the first film.
