Having just read an article that noted Scott King's passing, my thoughts flashed back to this song, and the amused look on Scott's face when Sammie springs the surprise lyric change about Maggie's then impending departure for college. It shows just how much the Fossils enjoyed working with the Foxes in those earlier days.
I never had the pleasure to see any live performances, and in my seventies would have a hard time justifying driving from Jersey to Georgia just to hear a band. However, as one who has been banging a gong to direct people to listen to F&F for a couple years now, it saddens me to know of Scott's passing and the loss all the F&F members are feeling.
    Rest in peace, Scott.

Scott was a big fan of powerhouse female vocalists and introduced the girls to a lot of music. "Oh, you gotta do this one" He was always up to date on the latest, Sammie said she remembered being so pleased when he asked her if she had heard of Haim and she actually had before he did!

How sad is to hear this. I come pretty often to see this very live performance because I admire "what's going on" throughout the whole song (the harmonies firstly, but then all the instruments and how they blend), and as it is incredibly well recorded -especially for a live performance - the bass and its behind-the-lines notes add so much to the blend. Something that non-musicians often times don't notice. And that's the bassist achievement above everything. Recquiescat in pacem. ✌🏻

I never heard this song until now. I had no idea that Carrie Underwood did this song. That is a REAL SONG: it tells a real story that so many of us have gone through. I am a musician and the first thing that I did, at the end of this song was to play it again, and again, and...the song is SO WELL WRITTEN. And another thing I LOVE, being a musician NO PITCH CORRECTION!!! These people know how to sing, harmonize, know how to play their instruments, just really impressive; the first time I saw and heard this band was their cover of Suite: Judy Blue eyes. THAT WAS AMAZING! If you're a band and not at their level, keep rehearsing. Oh, and I laughed so hard, and felt soooo good when Sammie changed the lyric for Maggie and she looked completely surprized; and then have to sing harmony!!! Way to go, girl! That WAS IMPRESSIVE!!!

She's confused at first, not exactly sure if what she's hearing from Sammie is what she's hearing, then glances at Tim, who's probably smiling at her, which tells her, "yep, it's what I'm hearing," then gives one last glance back at Scott wondering if he's in on it too, and his stare right at her pretty much tells the story. I was all the happier to find that the recording on the live album sounds a lot better on a good stereo system than the RUclips version (more treble and bass, better dynamics, better transparency), even though it's the same recording (next day Maggie is again "on I-24 Nashville, Belmont U, Eighteen years in her rear-view", 2:43).

This is my favorite F & F tune. Must have watched it 20 times or more and keep coming back to it. First, it's a very well written country-pop song. It's so incredibly in-the-pocket by the backing musicians. The vocal harmony is unbelievably tight. And Sammy, oh Sammy. The song is perfect for her, and she sings it like it just happened to her. As it is sort of happening to her: Maggie is about to leave for college, so she changes the last lyric, so that emotion comes right through. Totally amazing. Plus she is so wholesome, natural and gorgeous. :-)

I watched this one over and over again. First because I find the music and the harmony of the voices so beautiful. But I also enjoy watching the interaction between musicians and the mimic on their faces. And the part where Sammy changed the lyric and the way Maggie reacts to it is golden. I just love to watch that, but I didn't know the story behind it and since I don't know the covered original (maybe it's because I'm from the Netherlands) I also didn't know a lyric had been changed. So thank you, Dave, for explaining this!
