While I appreciate what you're trying to do, what it doesn't take into account is the 30 yard duff from the middle of the fairway that puts real stress on someone who aspires to break 100 (like my Mrs!) and makes the next shot so much harder. Could you, perhaps, do one of these vlogs course managing a genuine 100 shooter so you can manage mistakes as they are made?
Imagine a line, three feet in front of your ball, you cannot think any bad thoughts about your shot once you cross that line. Think what you like before it, break your club if you want, but once you cross that line, forget it. It's done, it's gone. Tiger Woods does this (not the breaking the club bit!).
Possibly the best vlog that you have ever made. Very informative, with brilliant tips. Your efforts to mimic a 28 handicapper leave a bit to be desired. No duff shots, fats, things, hooks, slices. It's amazing that we ever break 100, with all that going on.
As a new golfer, I am shooting usually between 104 and 112, this is so relevant as I feel so close to breaking 100. Just need to get rid of that high scoring hole or two that always seems to creep into every round! For me 3 putting is a definite, last round I deliberately marked my card each whole that I 3 putted or worse and was amazed to see that out of the 18 I only 2 putted 4 times. That could be a 14 stroke reduction for a start! For my second area of practice it really has to be pitching and chipping to within 7 paces, genuinely the most helpful video I’ve watched on RUclips 👍
I am aware that this video is not aimed at me, as I am a low handicapper, and have broken par many times. But the favourite time of my golfing 'career' was when I was aiming to score under 100, and the thrill of hitting the odd great shot. I sometimes wish I could go back and do it again, as golf was actually less frustrating back then. Interesting video guys.
So true. I only researched golf in lockdown having played par 3 courses at age 18 with a howson set from Argos in 2002. Fast forward to 2021 and with the same 300cc driver, I hit 192yds middle fairway having been rained on from the next tee who sliced the ball 220 right within yards of me. I Was elated with a 192 from such an old, techless, terrible driver. This vid Gives me enthusiasm for better results and a sub 100 score.
@@MarkCrossfield I’d like to see you, mark and coach, teach Rory to becoming a low single figure handicap. Just discovered you on youtube and I love your videos ...........Keep them coming as a golfer that hasn't played in 20 years and just getting back into it...
Trying to shoot level par. Best ever is one over. For people looking to break 100, keeping the 8, 9, 10s off the card is key. Learning how to get the ball back in to play from trouble in one shot can make a big difference too.
Finally you are back to giving sound advice (golf coach, not a RUclipsr bruh!) Spent the first lockdown watching all off your vlogs seeing Ray struggle and it’s so relatable. I’ve gone from only breaking 100 playing well to averaging high 90s with the occasional break 90. The differences I focussed on (I guess it’s 2 of your 4) I calmed the slice off the tee into a fade by slowing swing and concentrating on tempo and face control… similar distance of 200-225 but in play so no tee box nerves of the fore left. I practiced not 3 putting from 12ft … which takes the mental pressure of the chip/pitch/approach to be close away… and guess what without the pressure to get close sometimes I do! Most importantly though, and not something you touched on, I remind myself that golf is hard and bad shots will happen … high handicappers are not generally bad golfers, they just are inconsistent week to week, hole to hole and sometimes shot to shot. I found watching LET tournaments is more relatable to me as a male handicap golfer than the current trend of ‘300+ smash and pitch’ in the men’s game
i appreciate the targets and ball locators in the videos. helps seeing things on the small computer screens! love this content watched two times already.
Your other video on lag putting helped me out a ton last week all I focused on was putting in a 2ft circle and came in second in my flight in my men's club ...
Best and most relatable video you have done to date in relation to my golf game!! Not enough course management videos out there and ill be taking these tips onto the course tonight!!! Cheers Mark and Coach Lockey!
Very good video, great explanation and approach! You guys seem to really take your time to explain things in a clear calm manner that an amateur like me can understand!
Appreciate you guys. I’m a 100 shooter and found that not swinging so hard has really improved fairways hit without losing much distance because I get better contact. Typically drive is 200+/- but I have had some go 230-260 (gravity aided). My putter (not me) is broken 😡 and I regularly 3 putt. Lots to learn and put into practice…
One of the best videos I have watched! Ive been playing (badly) since 14. Now 38 with a 17 year hiatus I have committed to playing more and better. Best score 104. I can comfortably hit over 200 but direction is inconsistent. Next biggest issue is poor approach play/heroic shots. I'm actively trying to reduce 3 putting and pace control is getting better. Greens in regulation is next to zero. Such a mental game and requires loads of concentration over long periods. I typically overthink my set up and pre shot routine so still searching for a good swing thoughts and feels for better, more consistent ball striking. The quest continues..
Interesting and very helpful video. I'm retired and play with a couple of golfers that can't drive it 200 yds consistently. They typically score in the low 90's sometimes into the 80's.The difference - their short games (50yds in) would be similar to low handicappers. I can consistently drive the ball 250-270 yds. However, my short game is crap so they typically score better than I do. I wish I had their short game. I know that I have to practice that part of my game more and also incorporate your tips. Thanks
i really enjoyed this video. Yes I can duff a 7 iron as easy as duffing a drive but the course management aspect has got to help and Im definetely going to give it a go tomorrow.
Nice video for golf management for those of us that don't get the time or have the $ to practice as much as we would like. I have a >20 year old knock-off golf club set with small driver and 3 wood that I use. I play about 1-4 times/year when time/money allows, so getting good solid game management tips are always welcome. Hoping to upgrade to some good used clubs in the future, when prices come back down to reasonable prices.
I’d like to see you, mark and coach, teach Rory to becoming a low single figure handicap. A little series over a couple of months - everything from technique to course management and equipment choices.
Thanks for the tips guys. i scored 101 on my last round, im trying to break that 100 barrier, your tips will help me greatly, fun video and good to watch, keep up the good work guys.
This is basically how my grandfather played until his last rounds in his early 90's. Drive 120-140 yards, followed by two more of the same shot from the deck, but his third shot into the green was incredibly accurate and he still made pars regularly.
great videos as ever..........shot scope taught me to ditch my driver cos it normally ended in trees and use 3 wood of the tee and find the fairway and that my approach is terrible and I leave putts short 70 percent of the time
Some great ideas here. You can simulate the distance of a 100-shooter by playing a shorter club but for you guys the ball is going where you aim it. The big issue that the 100+ shooters I play with is consistency. They can hit their driver 200 yards+ 7 out of 10 times, but 4 of those times it will finish in trouble either left or right.
When I started playing my pro said aim for level 5’s going round & don’t feel pressured into getting pars. 18x5=90 so breaking 100 and allows for the odd par along with the blow out holes. It certainly helped me as I didn’t think too much about the par for each hole. Obviously not going to do it all the time but gives you a goal instead of thinking about the course par, then as you improve you can take the average down by whatever you want including fractions of numbers depending on your overall score goal. Another excellent video without getting too hung up on technical jargon. Simple ideas that everyone can practice easily 👍⛳️🏌🏼♂️
Very good video, I watching this with my 9 year old son and explaining the difference between where I’m looking to hit it and where he should be aiming, very good work guys
Would love to see you do this left handed as you did with some of your “higher handicap” club testing. Not that comparable you hitting 5i or 6i instead of Driver will mean tighter dispersion due to D-plane right?
This would be a far more accurate representation of proper bogey golf with fats and thins and lost balls in the mix as well as the lower distance on all clubs.
I REALLY love videos like this, cutting through all the crap and just delivering straight facts. The only thing I'd say is it might not be as easy for amateurs to keep their 200 yard tee shots in play...they're probably hitting Drivers and 3-woods, so D-Plane's suggesting they'll likely spray it a bit more than you guys did here. Would love for you guys to do a similar video for breaking 90, 80, and 75!
Great guys, I don’t have great distance mainly due to a health condition but getting fitter gave me a little more distance but my big improvements came on the greens, practiced putting at home for distance control and did not always aim at flag when chipping. Much appreciated vlog and appreciate it must have been hard for you boys playing so short!
Really great video. Will use these methods during my round on Thursday. Would be great to see this kind of video with a high handicap golfer to see it work in practice. Well done boys
Brilliant vid. Its been many moons since I shot near 100 but some of these things really made me think about my game and how much time I spend calculating the shot. Thanks boys.
Great vid Mark. Just worked a lot on my dead arm chip ala Jason Day. That's brought the handicap down enormously. Pace control is bang on what I'm needing to improve next to stop the 3 -4 putts But am I the only one that starts getting anxiety when I see golf vlogs where they're hanging out on a green for a while... Start thinking "is someone coming up and are we getting in the way"...
Tried this out last night over 9 holes. I didn't do very well but that's because of my bad shots. However I was finding more fairways, and giving myself better chances by not trying to sling it as far as I could and being happy to pitch up towards the green chip on within 7 steps and happy with a 2 putt. I'm a 28 handicapper so this really helped control my Play l and helped me be realistic about what I could achieve. When I can get the ball to go where I want it. And not score 7s on the first 3 holes I think this method will come in to its own even more and really give confidence to my game.
Great insight, I think a lot of these ideas can be used to break 90/80 also, for me it’s 3 putts and greens in reg I need to improve to break 80 consistently.
This is great even for me looking to break 85. I think it’s interesting how you said hitting ‘inappropriate’ clubs made it easier for you to keep it in play. As I’m trying to take a more aggressive approach to get more pars/birdies (e.g. going to par 5s rather than laying up etc.) I’ve actually started to lose more balls and temporarily my scores have gone up a bit even though I feel like my skill level is increasing. This is versus when I’m playing conservatively to bogey golf. Interesting challenges!
I think that the "inappropriate clubs" comment was meaning that if you hit 180 yards with a 34° 7 iron versus a 14° 3 wood, your "D-plane" makes it way easier to limite curvature and keep the ball in line. The less loft the easier it is to banana the ball in the woods, thick rough and other alligators' pits! Aggressive play is not necessarily the best option, you need to keep in mind a "circle of likely outcome" for your balls and make sure you're aiming at a place where most if not all of said circle is not in "trouble". If the club needed to attack a par 5 green in 2 forces you to have some of that "cone of dispersion" over "big trouble", lay up, to a place that you can have 100% of that cone in play (ideally in the fairway) and then a possibility to attack the green with a club that gives you a high chance of sticking it close to the hole... 10% birdie, 80% par and 10% bogey give a better average score than 5% eagle, 5% birdie, 60% par, 10% bogey and 10% double or more even if you've ruled the eagle out (well, actually you can still hole the approach!).
@@francoisdesmoulins-lebeaul4273 he's on about people breaking 100. No one at that level can hit a 7 iron 180 yards. I thought he meant play within yourself to limit damage and take trouble out of play. That's certainly how I started breaking 90
What a better way of approaching this cliche subject. So many youtubers try this and nothing as simple or practical as this. Last year when I was playing off low 20’s best score was 85 off the stick. I have improved where I am playing mid teens now, looking to come down a little more. It would be interesting to see another vlog with the break 90 and then breaking 80. Time consuming to create, but so many of us would reap so many rewards due to the practical method you both use.
Some great advice. In my time I’ve worked on all of these. Lol. Ives always tried to find little bench marks to try and keep consistence. So putting ive got two back swing ranges (inside and outside foot). And chipping I do three, and each then it helps me work out distance with clubs. Thanks for the tips guys
This is perfect for me as a 26 handicapper. I've had 16 rounds since i got my ShotScope watch & obviously I need to improve everywhere but it has highlighted the areas I need to work on most - off the tee I'm losing 6.9 shots to a tour player (P Avg 230yd drive & 45% miss fairway right) & approach play I'm losing 13.4 shots - because I'm stuck behind trees etc. & have to chip out...plus the all too regular duff! Recently, instead of going to the range me & a few mates have booked the last tee time & hit a few balls from different lies etc & it's working - if I can that 1st shot straighter no doubt I'll start hitting more GIR
I play with two high handicappers and were they lose 10 to 15 shots per round is from 50 yds and in...short game is an area were so many shots are lost..
Such a good video, I watched it twice! I think there's 1 thing that everyone who has a scoring target in mind, be it par or 100, needs to have... HONESTY! Most people who aren't achieving what they want to are kidding themselves somewhere along the line in what they are doing or can do. Would love to see your thoughts addressing some of the common themes that will undoubtedly keep coming up inn the comments.
im enjoying using my V3. This video was really helpful to point me in the direction of which stats to concentrate on as it (through no fault of the developers) gives so much information it can be hard to know whats useful to track.
Really good video Mark, this is me and my mate to a tee, hes 30 yards past me on every drive but lost 6 balls last sunday, Ive had the same ball for 2 rounds
I play off 20 and my lower score ever was 82 on a par 72. These tips are great. I'm currently working on strike with the driver and its tough but hopefully will get me some Lockey Bombs!
Great series - but I would love to see you try these great course management tips with left handed clubs. Then you proberbly find these 200 yard teeshots harder with a driver and short game almost impossible :-)
For what it's worth Mark I play to a +1.2 and still think this was very, very helpful! I'm going to add those 50yd/20yd and get it to within paces drills immediately. Brilliant!
Great video. I think a follow up with three golfers struggling with a combination of those faults would be brilliant. I have a mate that can comfortably hit over 250 but struggles to break 100.
88, once. only time i broke 90. 28 handicap, so breaking 100 is maybe / maybe not sort of thing. great video, will do what i can to apply these thoughts. thank you!
One thing I’d add to low hanging fruit #3 is club selection. A few years ago I was using my lob wedge everywhere from 100 yards in. I think I did this because I thought it’s what pros did and it’s the “sexy” shot when you can spin the ball. My handicap was anywhere from a 6-10 back then. Now, I’m using all different kinds of clubs and shots depending on what’s required around the green and what’s the one club I’m typically not using? My 60 degree lol. My handicap is down to a 3.7. SEXY DOESNT GET YOU LOWER SCORES.
Mark, great video. How much does someones preparation before you tee off play into the scores?? Is screeching up to the car park and dashing to the first the best prep?! Do you stretch beforehand?
While I appreciate what you're trying to do, what it doesn't take into account is the 30 yard duff from the middle of the fairway that puts real stress on someone who aspires to break 100 (like my Mrs!) and makes the next shot so much harder.
Good vid, definitely using the 20yrd chipping practice and the putting to the fringe 👍👍
Great video really informative once again great 👍
Thanks Mark. This one is very usefull 👌🏻
Glad it was helpful!
When I attack pins I get in all sorts of trouble. My best season I held back and practised my putting and chipping constantly, scores slashed
Coming soon. I agree this is a cliche let’s get views subject for dull RUclips. Shame really. But hey ho golf pros going to golf pro.
Good vid. Hoping you’ll be doing the same for 90, 80 etc 🤞 breaking 80 is this years stretch target
Excited to see the same thing for Breaking 90, 80, etc
Great video! I am planning/hoping/trying to break 90 this year... 🤞 and ALL these "tips" are BANG ON! Thanks!
I have a break 80 and 90 coming soon.
@@MarkCrossfield well we are still in lockdown here in Ontario Canada, so I have lots of time to watch. Keep up the great videos sir!
This was excellent 👌.
I’m working on breaking 80, but the tips work, pace control, hitting wedges closer, so the tips are just good golf tips! Good vid!!
Brilliant ! I’m looking now to break 90 and every one of those tips still applies ..
This is absolute gold, thanks guys🔥
The next time I get to actually play ill be implementing this 👍🏼
Such a good video, I watched it twice!
5 over is my lowest. All great stuff Mark, actually really great stuff. The big one I'm taking away from this is the putting pace control.
im enjoying using my V3.
Very good and very useful video. My handicap is 33 and I my target is 27.
I play off 20 and my lower score ever was 82 on a par 72. These tips are great. I'm currently working on strike with the driver and its tough but hopefully will get me some Lockey Bombs!
78 my lowest, average 83 a round great tips on target golf and distances especially round the greens 👍
Great video!!! Loved the putting distance example. Will you do the same for 90 and 80?
Awesome video. please do a 90 and a 80 version. really good work
Great series - but I would love to see you try these great course management tips with left handed clubs. Then you proberbly find these 200 yard teeshots harder with a driver and short game almost impossible :-)
For what it's worth Mark I play to a +1.2 and still think this was very, very helpful! I'm going to add those 50yd/20yd and get it to within paces drills immediately. Brilliant!
87 - Winter is a killer for the shorter hitter. Dry summer days the ball runs out. Wet fairways drop and stop.
Great video. I think a follow up with three golfers struggling with a combination of those faults would be brilliant. I have a mate that can comfortably hit over 250 but struggles to break 100.
Maybe also something similar for breaking 90 and 80?
Love this video, simple things that can really help, If I could trim 10 puts off a round...I'm dancing!! Cheers fellas
Very enjoyable. Key for me was THINK! (and concentrate).
Great tips - any chance of doing a similar video to break 90 or 80 based on the statistics?
88, once. only time i broke 90. 28 handicap, so breaking 100 is maybe / maybe not sort of thing. great video, will do what i can to apply these thoughts. thank you!
Great video
Data driven as always! It just doesn’t lie!
Great content!
