One of the most frightening experiences of my life, was when my back was turned, on the ramp of Travis AFB, and a lone F-100 close by, kicked in the afterburner. I was 10, now 73, and the memory of it won't let go. I had no choice but let the F-100, be my favorite aircraft of all time.
I grew up in Fort Wayne, Indiana and we house the last Super Sabre in the world. Truly a masterpiece of aviation. Has the best sound besides a Mustang.
I heard carrier crews weren't told about the AB when they were first put aboard ship. Many of them thought there was a mishap the first time they heard one.
I'm younger but at 10 I had a very similar story of a frightening experience at Langley AFB. But that aircraft was the F-117. I had never saw such a strange shape and flying object in my life. And was terrified by it. And my Father who I just knew would protect me told me "Son I think we should go home now, I dont know what that is"
That has to be one of the coolest planes ever. It just looks like it’s about to jump on something and rip it apart ! I’ve always loved watching them. Cool
So glad that there's a video capturing the sound of the afterburner kicking on. 2:56 for the sound. The videos on my phone didn't do it justice! It sounds unreal in person. Such a cool jet.
This F-100 has an F-102 afterburner nozzle on it. The original F-100 nozzles would get stuck closed and the afterburner wouldn't iight. When the F-102's were taken out of service the afterburner nozzles were removed and transferred to the F-100. The F-102 nozzles were a newer, more reliable design.
What a beautiful example. I remember them dotting the flightline at MacDill AFB when I was a kid. My dad would take me to work with him on Saturdays and I could look out from the walkway of the hanger down on all the action. My sub really was workin' when the pilot kicked in the afterburner. I miss that so much. We had a house in Tampa right off one of MacDill's approaches. All kinds of traffic would fly by or over, but it was the F-4's, F-102's, F-106's, F-100's, and other go-getters that had my attention. Especially when a flight would practice combat returns. Thanks for another great vid! Hope to catch you at Oshkosh!
The F-100 flew the most sorties of any US aircraft deployed to Southeast Asia. It few troops in contact missions from Da Nang to Khe Sanh and the Ia Drang valley. One even shot down a MiG-17. Bravo to D. Cutisall & his team for keeping that legacy alive and flying with this warbird!
BOOM! Wake up everybody! My dad (now 85 years old) was in French Morocco in the late 50's with the 45th Fighter Day Squadron at Sidi Slimane Air Base. He said he would always love the F 100. He was an engine mechanic assistant/armorer.
I love this plane! So sleek and radical! It's a shame it's the only flying example left in the world. Midland-Odessa had one as a static display in OD Green. I really wanted to have it. Beautiful airplane.
To me, it's more majestic to see them taxi with the canopy open. I can't figure out why though. Nostalgia, connection to the outside world? Or maybe it's just cool to see a pilot go by like he's driving down PCH
Rumor has it that Richard Bach, author of "Jonathan Livingston Seagul" rolled an F 100 off the runway of the Des Moines, IA while he was with the air gaurd there
Nice to know 1 is still flying. I hope someone or some museum can get the other century series planes flying, to tell the complete story of the cold war and Viet Nam era.
This is a little bit hard to believe that this is true! I would have never imagined seeing a Hun like this in the modern day? I expected only grainy old films and bland, half hearted documentaries. It's quite unpopular to bring up, but I can't see why if there are several flyable Huns, F-4Ds, MiG-21s, that there can't be one Thud restored? The money is out there. Are all the main spars cut? Anyways, not to detract from this immaculate F-100F, and a great, noisy BANG! flight demo! Thank You!
No. The Super Sabre’s J57 engine used a “hard” afterburner. So when it came on fuel is dumped right into the exhaust, causing the “boom” you hear in the video . Modern fighter jets use a graduated afterburner system that sprays fuel in a slower process. No loud bang for the crowd, but it’s more efficient.
@@johngrossenbacher6597 Yes, by design. The first F-100 refueling probes were straight. But that put the probe below the cockpit canopy, so the pilot couldn’t see where the probe was when trying to refuel. By cranking it upward the probe is visible to the pilot , making the aerial refueling process easier and safer for all parties.

Like you my father was in the Air Force and I would watch the planes. Every base but the 86 was just so cool ! 😎

Super Sonic analog killing machines. Life used to be so much simpler. Thanks for posting this.
I was in Iceland in59 an one flew over from England an gave us a "Bubble ck" on our radar antenna. Memory of a life time. Thanks

I bet. The engine itself is very quiet, but then kaboom, and the afterburner lights and it gets extremely loud

Beautiful footage! Beautiful Hun🙂 I really love the old In n Out afterburners🙂
Wow! What a blast from the past, thanks for sharing 👍
Magnificent !!!
Still one of my all-time favorite airplanes. 😎

Made in American! Tested every where. Thanks St.Paul,Minnesota.

Super Sabre, superb sound! Thanks for sharing
Oh wow, I haven’t seen one of these in ages! 😎😎
Best of the "Century Series"

What happened to the Collings Foundation Super Saber? last I saw it flew in 2014.
One of the most iconic aircraft from the vietnam war so cool
There are fewer than 1000 of these still flying. Very rare
I’m pretty sure this is the only one flying in the world.
@@AwDaleYeah I believe the only other 'F' version in flying condition is the Collings Foundation F-100F painted in S.E.A. scheme.
You must get your information from FOX news. Educate yourself kiddo

The 50s produced some beautiful jets. F-86,F-104,F-100 were all gorgeous looking fighters
Based here in Fort Wayne Indiana this is the only one in flight ready status in the country!

Oh the F-100 my favorite jet fighter
This plane has a higher payload than a phantom?
great plane....❤
Are those compressor stalls with a boom?
That bang sound is the afterburner lighting off.

Interesting
@@172ndairwing4I came to the comments hoping someone would have an explanation for that afterburner pop. Great info!
Nothing subtle about the J57 afterburner. I remember the Thunderbirds flying the Hun.
1:52 - Surge?
Bird Ingestion?
Again @ 2:35.
That's the afterburner kicking on
❤ I like looking motive body Sabre F.86 in Indonesia Air Force Aerobatic Spirit Team ❤
At 5:06, Is that normal with this particular aircraft/engine?
Yep! That's the afterburner coming on. Best part of the show. If you listen to the other flybys you can hear the BOOM when it kicks on
I’m surprised there’s still one flying.
beautiful old gal
whats with the refueling probe🙈
What about it?
It's cranked.

Always, AR in the Hun
😍😍😍
Not me being offered one of these in need of putting back together
The engine you imagine what is it??? Well is a turbojet engine
Best watched @ 1.5 spd. NO. F-100 is not beautiful to look at.
Hearing loss guaranteed or your money back
Wow !!! Exciting
There's always a chopper making noise with any aircraft video it seems. This guy is just Sunday cruising. Nothing special.
