I know a lot of people following you know all this stuff it’s something we do Day in day out, but for people who are looking for this kind of tutorial, your way of explaining things makes it simple to follow. and I still watch all your videos just incase you point out something I don’t know or have forgotten about, which you have done in past videos. Keep up the great work.
Thanks! Yeah, it’s tricky trying to keep everyone happy, and hopefully I’m getting the balance right - or close enough, at least. 🤷♂️👍
2 hours of searching the internet and I finally found the information I was looking for. Thanks you so much Peter!
Thank you! 🙌👍
These type of videos on subjects that seem not sufisticated, are important to us garage shop wood workers. We are sometimes left behind by some with large shops with planers and joiners etc. Keep up the good work and help us little guys without all the fancy tools.
Thanks! There’s a couple more to come, for sure 👍👍
Great video, simple explanation. Saved me so much grief with cabinet hinges - many thanks
Brilliant, I can see this being a go to video for many folk for many years to come😀.
Thanks Leo! 👍
Me for example ❤️
Thank you so much sir!
This video saved me hours of frustration and ensured a perfect install on a project. Thank you so much! You have a brilliant way of presenting your videos so the information is clear and the instructions easy to follow. Keep up the fantastic work.
Glad it helped!
Excellent tutorial.
Such a simple job, but so easy to turn it into a nightmare.
Thanks for posting 👍
Great video! The idea of using p120 sand paper as a .5 mm spacer is brilliant!
As a keen DIY, carpentry coming top of my likes I found this video, for what should be a simple task, informative, professional and easy to follow. placed in favourites for future reference.
Thanks! 👍
Peter - you absolutely nailed that. Masterclass.👍
Thanks Norman! 👍👍
Have restored antique furniture for years started working with wood about 2 years ago hello from Australia
Thanks! And hello from London! 👍👍
That was very informative for someone who knows very little about carpentry, look forward to seeing more !!
It’s 1.5hours til midnight and I’ve found just the perfect video to learn how complete the project I’m trying to build!!! Top bloke for making this video thank you!!!
A self centering drill bit.
For fucking ages I've struggled with getting the hole in the middle of the plates and that is it.
Thank YOU
For the best part of 40 years I have been fitting these incorrectly. Great video, great advice.
I only read the first few comments but I agree with all they said. One thing tho, bothered me that you rushed thru the inset doors because that was exactly what I needed to see but it was too fast for me. However, watched it again and just slowed speed down and it was all good and made sense. Thanks for the video and tips that I should have seen years ago; it would have saved me LOTS time and trouble! And I appreciated your comments about buying flush hinges, which is exactly what I need and did not realize until I saw this video. I guess they are also called non-mortise hinges. I'm not experienced at all with this stuff so this helps a lot!
You probably have no idea how much this video is about to make my life more straight forward, I am building a cantilever sewing box and about to fix the top lids. I hate hinges with a passion as never seem to get them right. This has shone a huge amount of light on what for me is a dark art. Ordering flush fit hinges is next job. Many Thanks.
"When the job hinges on doing it right!" Thanks Peter.
👍👍
Just wanted to say thank you for the brief yet direct and concise video. This was EXACTLY what I was looking for in the manner I'd hoped to find it. Great work, excited for more.
A timely video indeed. Been messing with these all day. I have 'Hinge Dyslexia' /tomorrow is better, Thank you.
👍
One word - Brilliant. I could have done with this a few months ago! Looking forward to the Euro hinges too. Thank you for making these videos, it's really appreciated.
Pleasure, thanks! 👍👍
And here it is the missing video hahaha I'm sure this vid is made special for me ;-) Thank you so much and a nice Sunday
Haha, thanks Tim! And have a good Sunday yourself! 👍👍
Thank you!! All the details of what to do and what not to do -- precisely what I was searching for. I very much appreciate your teaching style.
Such a helpful video and exactly what I was looking for!
This is a FANTASTIC video. Thank you so much! I am very bad with hinges, and your videos are a continual source of help.
Heres me, after a long year of doing DIY on my house learning almost constantly from RUclips, thinking my luck will finally be up. I'm installing alcove cabinets with inset doors. Completely overlooked how complicated the job of fitting the hinges might be. I thought theres no way I'm going to easily find the information I'm looking for and after making the doors myself, I am a bit worried about the hard work that's gone into the cabinets and doors being ruined by a sloppy job fitting. This video has provided me with absolutely all the information I was hoping for. Thank you so much for taking your time to make it Peter. You've earned a subscriber.
Love this video. Learned a lot. I’m refinish a cabinet and replacing hinges. This was a big help!
Wow. Fantastic video. I tried to like it twice but it undid the like, so I liked it 5 times.
I shared this vid on social media bc I know I'm not the only one who has been frustrated / defeated by hinges.
Thank you!! I searched so many until I found your site! You tech as you demonstrate & I totally understand! I built my first hinged bench for my laundry room & needed guidance for the top! Thank you again for your help!
Thanks Cynthia - really kind of you to take the time to comment, and very much appreciated. 👍👍
Thank you Peter! Put in a little cupboard door today after watching this and so pleased with it :)
Thanks Tara, glad to hear it helped! 👍
My first try.
Searching for a video on this and Incredibly thankful for all of your tips.
I was doing the very thing you showed in your video with the same size wood. And I also have a ironing board closet from 1900. That I am turning into a spice rack but was moving the hinges as the bottom half of the door falls down onto the floor. Now I know how to do that as well.
Thank you very much and yes, I find you to be very calming. You are a fabulous teacher
Your are a top instructor. 10/10. Thank you
thanks Peter found this video very informative and useful
Thank you for taking your valuable time to educate me and others who like to be DIY home
woodwork, makes the wife believe we know what we are doing, LOL.
Top tips Peter, think this video will be one of your most watched to date!😢😢😢😢😢😢👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍😁😁😁😁😁
Thanks Alan! 👍👍
Thanks so much for making this video! I was so confused about what type of hinges to get to install an acrylic door for my book case! Appreciate your clear explanation for beginners like me! Subscribed!
Glad it was helpful, and welcome!
Hi Peter , once again you have surpassed yourself , with a brilliant easy to follow and wow, how useful video , I wish I had seen this years ago and would have saved myself so much head scratching. keep up the fantastic work and if possible more of these 'experience ' video's to help us wood work duffers !!. have a great makers central
Thanks Glenn! Yes, more to come on this theme 👍👍
The one time I bought flush hinges (by mistake) I looked at them and put them back in the packet then immediately drove to the merchant and exchanged them. Trained as a plumber so I never did learn so after a lifetime of construction and maintenance work I know, in my retirement, how to use the little buggers! Thank you.
Great job Peter. I'm amazed by the number of templates and jigs that woodworking supply companies sell for cabinet doors, hinges, slides, shelf pins. pulls and knobs. Some could be quite handy and many look easy to make. BTW, those demo cabinets would be perfect for storing keys.
Thanks Mark! Yes, I know what you mean about the range of jigs available - some of which are very useful, but many are priced so that you really need to be doing a lot of the same thing to justify them. And great idea to turn these into key cabinets - hadn't thought of that, thanks! 👍👍
Thanks for this excellent video! I really prefer the aesthetic of how flush hinges peek out on the side of the doors but didn't want to mess up installation - this makes it seem quite approachable! :)
Thank you! 🙌
Thanks Peter for putting my mind to rest of how to install these hinges correctly ,I’ve even seen people chopping these hinges in on youtube
Excellent timing! My next job features a concertina cupboard door and I've been scratching my head how to do the inner hinge. See you at the show next week.
Thanks John - you bet! 👍👍
Very informative video. It appears I bought the wrong type of hinges and now I can clearly see the correct one and how to properly install. Well done and very professional.
Thanks! 👍👍
You can get cheap euro hinges at Ikea in the spare parts section. For shop furniture or smaller projects they are perfect.
Made by Blum as well - though it does necessitate a trip to Ikea, of course 😕🤷♂️
Sir, I have to say that this problem gave me headaches all the time I had to build something with doors. I neve knew the little secrets behind, some I have learned the hard way but it was always something that messed up my doors. So THANK YOU for doing a vide on this. Especially that I hate those euro style hinges for which I need a bit more special equipment. These are cheap and easy to work with... now that I fond this video. :)
Wow, thank you for the instruction on these hinges. Your instructions are very good and it cleared up my confusion. All is well now :D
I'm so glad you've done this video, I'll be saving this! Love the idea of using masking tape and using sandpaper as a spacer! My local homebase was having a closing down sale (90% off!!!) So I bought a load of different hinges for future projects not knowing how to install half of them. Thanks again for sharing your knowledge with us all!
Pleasure! 👍👍
Well done Peter - you have educated this old Michigan boy!
Great video/tutorial! Well done Peter.
Thanks! 👍
Useful video.
Can I add a tip. If you get tear out on the end grain on MDF, get some small rawlplugs, yellow work well. Drill out for the plug and insert, then pop your screw back in.
Harvey Smith That’s so obvious. Typical that I never thought of it. I, stupidly, used fatter screws to fill the gap.
@@MKRM27 My pleasure. The best rawlplugs are the cheap ones from screwfix.
Harvey Smith Harvey, what is a rawlplug?
@@ronh9384 A Rawlplug is the little plastic tube type things that you normally use in masonry to screw into.
@@ronh9384 UK brand name for a wall plug: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wall_plug
Great videos. Keep up the good work. Really helps me with my DIY projects
Thanks! 👍👍
Glad I watched this. I installed these very hinges in the past and came up against the very same issues with the too large a head screws. I got pushback. I got around it with a magnetic push pop catch but like anything.. the correct tools for the correct job makes for a beautiful finish 👌
Exactly what I was looking for. Thanks a lot Peter and regards from Germany.
Thanks Stefan! Best wishes from London! 👍
Thanks. There's some really useful tips here. I managed to fit some flush hinges without issue. 👍
I have fitted many various types of hinge over the years and it is always best to have a dry run prior to fitting. Also, best to make sure the screw goes in straight at 90 degrees to the hinge or it will affect closing.
Thanks for this. I'm a rookie putting doors on a bookshelp and had no idea how to get these hinges right. I haven't tried it yet but I'm hoping this helps me install them properly.
How did your project turn out? I'm doing the same.
This is very timely indeed - I need to add a hinged top to a small play table with storage underneath and sort of knew these were the right hinges to use but have never been quite sure about them so was trying to find a work around so I could use cup hinges!! This will make the job much easier, so thanks a lot.
Thanks! For a play table with storage, I might also look at continuous/piano hinge as you can make it flush with the surface, whereas ironically with these 'flush' hinges the knuckle always stands proud. Just a thought. 👍👍
@@10MinuteWorkshop that's a good point, I'll take a look, thanks!
Cheers Peter. Good timing. Just made a cabinet for some amplifiers & musical equipment. Need to stick doors on it. Hinges where puzzling me.
Extremely useful. 👍 I've these in the past and now I know how I SHOULD have fixed them! 😂
Thanks Tony! 👍👍
perfect. couldn't expect better explanation.
I'm making a case for a custom guitar and this looks like it will help me out a lot! Thanks!!!
thank you for that. after hours of faffing around trying to hang heavy doors with the hinges already on I took the hinges off and used your measuring technique... bingo!
Glad it helped, thanks for letting me know! 👍
Super cool! And love the alliteration. Lol! :)
Thanks! 😄
Always enjoy your instructional videos Peter....cheers...rr Normandy
Thanks Richard! There's a few more along this theme to come 👍👍
Thank you. About to do this job and didn't know the actual name of the hinge. 🎉
You are right about getting decent countersinking on flush hinges. I have tried a couple and they are all woeful even with 3mm screw heads. Have taken to grinding them out slightly using an old countersink drill - it's agricultural but works.
Yes, especially on the cheap ones! 👍
Really nice job with this video!
Thanks! 👍👍
Thank you Peter, long time lurker but I'm in the middle of a huge desk, wall unit build and hinges are tomorrow. I went for the flushed hinges for simplicity but I never realised there was a right and wrong way to use them. Now I know lol. Off to watch some more of your videos. Best Wishes from Cornwall :) oh and subscribed :D
Thanks Peter someone I can understand 😊
I had no idea how useful it was!
Thank you Peter, good video I fitted some of these as an inset and my doors were that heavy the door fell off as it was 18mm Birch ply. I will be dropping by next week have the weekend ticket 😀👍
Cheers Ray! Yes, they’re not heavy duty hinges, or sure. And looking forwards to seeing everyone next weekend 👍👍
I will reconsider these hinges, now you've 'de-mystified' their installation [AND orientation] Cheers Peter, see you next Saturday.
Thanks Keith - looking forwards to it! 👍
About to fit some of the these this BH. Now know how to do it properly, see you next Sunday at the NEC
You bet! 👍👍
Had no idea you were releasing this around the same time I was releasing a project where I used butt hinges. So glad I bothered to recess them now! 👍🤣👍
😂😂 Hey, we should talk more... 👍👍🤷♂️🤷♂️
Bitchy
Great informative video. Thanks for sharing. I've never seen those flush hinges over here.
Thanks Hans - that’s really interesting, I’d assumed they were universal 🤷♂️👍👍
I enjoy your videos, I'm a cabinet maker myself and use alot of MDF for built in alcoves etc.
I will say though that screwing through the face of mdf is fine, but i never EVER screw hinges into the edge of mdf even with a small pilot hole. I dont like to rely on them holding doors. I ALWAYS mark the locations of the hinge screws and then drill the screw hole out and glue a hardwood dowel in.
That way you're screwing into the centre of a strong hardwood dowel which you have no fear about pulling out or splitting the edge of the mdf.
Mark holes, dowel jig to drill straight, glue and sink the dowels in. 5 minutes to dry then chop the protruding dowel off flush with a chisel. Pilot hole, hinge on. Nice strong fixing compared to a weak mdf board
Thanks! I don’t disagree, but let’s be frank; if you’re using flush hinges - which this video is all about - then you’re not likely to be wanting to mess around with dowels or dominos, you’re using flush hinges because they’re quick and easy. And if you want a quick and easy fixing into the cut edge of MDF then this is the way to do it; pilot hole, long screw. It works. No, it’s not how I would choose to do it for paying work - and I wouldn’t use flush hinges either, come to that - but it works. 👍
@@10MinuteWorkshop this is very true Peter! You knock out some nice quality work though, i enjoy your channel and have subbed 👍🏼
Thanks, and welcome! 👍👍
Excellent explanation
outstanding explanation. Thanks!
Great, just what I was looking for! So the small leaf goes on the thin edge, the large leaf on the broad face. For overlap door that means the small leaf is on the carcass, while for inset door the small leaf is on the door.
Thanks! Yep, small leaf of the hinge always goes on the edge of the board. 👍👍
I noticed, surprisingly, that the larger part of tbe hinge was on the overlay door in the first install. It made sense though, when it was explained. With the inset door, i thought, "Wait, this time he put the smaller part of the hinge on the door." Looking thru the comments to see if anyone else "caught" it. Saw your comment & recognized "smaller part of hinge goes on thin edge of board," just like it was explained. Now I have it straight in my head. Easy to see how it can be confusing. I've spent plenty of time flipping hinges & boards around every which-way trying to figure out which way they go and how to get the desired result, i.e., open in, open out, etc. I'll never go thru that again, not with this type of hinge anyway. Thanks!
Excellent video. Thanks for the interesting and helpful information. Keep up the good work.
Thanks for sharing!! Need this for tomorrow’s DIY
Brilliant, as ever
Thanks! 👍👍
Good demo , ideal for my up coming project Thanks a lot .
Excellent explanation!
You are BRILLIANT~! I love your videos. They are so easy to follow and very very helpful. Thank you ~!
Thank you! 🙌👍
thanks for video. simple things like these hard to find but very important for ametour people like me
Thanks! 👍
Well! All the flush hinges that I have fitted over the years and only now do I find they were all backwards. Thank you for putting me right, Peter
Super help. Thanks. Keep doing these.
Thanks, will do!👍
Nice tip! Hope you have a great weekend at Makers Central. I wish I could be there.
Thanks Goran! I think there may be a little bit of video shot next weekend for the folks who can’t make the journey 👍👍🤔
Nice video. Very helpful. Thanks
excellent advice peter. I have always had trouble with these kind of hinges but now you have shown me the right way I am totally grateful. p.s I really enjoy your show thankyou very much . tony.
Thanks Tony! 👍👍
Thank you sir. I was trying to add light cabinet door with a budget
Cracking informative video as always. I’m guilty of a few of these fails in my past 😂
Thanks! Nd yes, I think we all have - it’s how we learn, right?? 🤷♂️👍👍
Good instructional video, thanks.
Thanks for confirming what i had in my head, I actually increased the size of the countersink for the 4mm screws I had , I had bought a box for a job ages ago and couldn't face having yet another box of screws where I wouldn't need them again. The small sizes are required so infrequently.
Thank you. Very helpful!
Great tutorial. Thanks
This is so helpful - I just made my first hardwood cabinet doors both for an inset cabinet and for an overlay... same cabinets in different locations and was feeling pretty daunted about the hinges. Your video could not have been more helpful - thank you so much.
Pleasure - thanks for watching! 👍
Great stuff, Peter! Many thanks for providing lots of tips. Best aye!
Thanks Aladstair! 👍👍
Thanks Peter, just in time to enjoy with a cheese toastie, you made it look soooo easy but that comes with doing over and over again 😀. A classic example of "£5.00 tool, £495 to know what to do with it" 😃!
Haha, thanks! 👍👍
