This was so amazingly helpful! I'm a beginner in both carpentry and diy so just trying to even understand the basics can be hard because people assume you already know. I'm trying to build just a coop but I'm using it as a practice for pretty much every skill related to it. I'm sanding, staining, building doors, using trim to hide the end of the hardware cloth, etc. I'm hoping to later use the skills to build my own customized furniture.
I remember helping my dad hang doors. He chiseled the recesses perfectly. Marked everything with his pocket knife. Pocket knife, pencil, chisels and planes were always sharp. Used a yankee drill for the screw holes. Drilled for door knobs with a brace and bit. It was great and I miss those days! Anytime he or I needed a marking guage type thing, we just made one.
COlin, you are a great source of knowledge and inspiration to me, a novice, an amatuer wood worker. Thank you Sir for your posts. Greetings from New Zealand. Stay safe and healthy
Thank you so much for this informative video. it answered exactly the questions I had about which hinges to buy. It's quite confusing to someone not familiar with all the different ways a door can be mounted. You made it crystal clear. Thanks so much!
A excellent topic Colin. This is one of the make or break issues whenever a lid or door is to be put in place. Mess this up and it can really effect the final outcome of our projects. An excellent video Amigo. Derek
GiddyUp994 Thanks Derek, yes I have had a number of emails and comments about hinges lately from subscribers so thought it was a good opportunity to take about them ...
Yah...this arrived just in time. I'll be installing butt hinges in a hidden door I'm making soon. If only you had a video on that. Anyway, another great instructional video. I feel like a have a woodworking mentor in you and your videos.
Wonderful video, exactly what i was looking for! I was very confused about putting up any sort of hinges, and that was what made me fear starting up the woodworking hobby. Thank you.
Thanks for this great video. I need to hang butt hinges in two different ways for two different uses. I have never worked with hinges before and your video has given me the confidence to go ahead and try. PS: your video was not too long.
My surface hinges are old as is the cabinet that they came off of. I'm having trouble putting them back on because they have been off for months. So according to your video, I should put the hinge on the door first, then the wood wall. And I found small slivers of wood under some of the hinges,I guess it was for proper fit? My home is over 100 years old I've learned many things on the old cabinet work.
Some great advice on here as usual thank you very much I have struggled with hinges on a few occasions being a basic DIY have a go so this will help such a lot
I'm struggling to install triangle gate hinges for a recording booth. I want it to open the door in and out, which is why I'm using the gate hinges. I seem to always put it on crooked. I have little room to work. This video helps me get a better idea about how hinges should work, as I'm new to carpentry!
Thank you. Made me realize i bought the wrong hinges. Better yet, you helped me understand wich ones i need. I built a small chest, but i don’t want the lid to open all the way over(360 degrees?). I want it to open halfway (90 degrees ?).where the lid can open and balance vertically. Whats that called?
Thank you for the video, i ignored most of the useful thinks you told in this video and my mirror door will now get a good treatment after learning form you,
good video. im making a storage bench, but only half of the bench will open up. bad thing is, i dont want the hinge to be there as u sit on it. anyway i can do that? hide it almost from the surface?
Hi Colin, Is it possible to install a butt hinge upside down? I am specifically thinking of the hinge type which has bearings. My common sense tells me that both bearings should share the load of the weight of the door and hence the hinge can only be installed one way. My observations however, tell me that the hinge is manufactured for either way up but then only one bearing will take all the downward force of the weight of the door. Any advice would be welcome. Thanks for many informative videos and your clear voice without any "music" and hype.
Hi there I am installing a door that sits on the outside of my panel and the opening drops down as its a cabin. What is the best hinge? I bought the butterfly hinge!! Thanks
I know it's not your job to help me, but I have a project I'm working on that I have a couple questions on (HINGES) and I am STUCK. I am reno-ing a china hutch. Put in new glass, painted inside and out and now am to the point of re-hanging the doors. I don't want to use the old ones-ugly, dated, ick-and am trying to find some new ones that will work. Unfortunately surface mount hinges won't work because the doors and cabinet have a routed edge. But Do the new hinges have to be the exact same size (width, thickness, depth)? I've tried some and can NOT get them to work and so am now in the process of filling all the screw-holes and starting from scratch. Got any help for me? Thanks!
I just found out that you made two playlists with videos for beginners. I watched them nearly all. They are very useful. But I cannot find nr 18. Where is it?
Hi Colin, Thanks for the video. In regard to Butt Hinges is there any reason that you use the marking gauge when scribing the timber for the long edge of the hinge, rather than turning the hinge over, pushing the knuckle/pivot up against the edge of the workpiece and scribing along the edge of the hinge? This is how I have done it previously, just wondering what your take is on this method. Thanks again. Jon
RJJFavorites I like to use the marking gauge because it allows me different distances of hinge depth and still gives me a nice straight line to follow. There is nothing wrong with how you are doing it, I use the same method from time to time ... I always say, if it is working for you, no need to change :) ... thanks for posting Ron, always good to hear what others are doing.
Excelente Video. Querría saber como se llaman esas mechas para poner los tornillos de las bisagras. Gracias y felicitaciones de nuevo desde Córdoba, Argentina
I enjoy your videos a lot. Please adjust the camera settings to get rid of the "flashing" when you have white or shiny objects on camera, it's very disconcerting.
Half of this video is for "the most common butt hinges", and you didn't even install them so we can see an example of how you fit them properly. Only talking...
Thank you very much (Tudah Rbah, in Hebrew). The real Name of the Creator is Yah (short version). The long Name, asd told to Mose, is Hayah asher Hayah. Do the 7 appointed times, as written of in Leviticus 23. Shalom and ahabah (peace and love ) from our home to yours.
aqwood Thanks for your comments, the problem is when I make them too short people complain that there isn't enough detail and in the end, it's not about the length of the videos, it's about ... are you giving enough detail to engage. If you find them too long, just press the speed-through button :)
That surprises me... I thought that people like to see the same amount of detailed content in shorter time. You are also making different kind of videos than I am, this is a how-to for beginners, not sharing your projects for busy people with too many subscriptions already :-) So more detail is needed. Thanks for the reply.

Something that should be simple, but to a newbie woodworker this information is so valuable! Thank you!

Very useful, Liked how you dragged the chisel back to find the notch.
Thank you
At the risk of being called out for constantly repeating myself; I learned a lot from this video. I learn so much from watching your channel.
You continue to be my “go to” source for this kind of info Colin. Thank you so much!

Do you know anyone who wants to buy Brainerd 4" Zinc Plated Strap Hinges? I have over 3,000 of them. Thanks!

Too many tools!!! I don't have half of these. Will keep looking for someone who is doing this with hand tools and ruler. Thanks anyways

Twenty minutes of explaining hinges? I think you should make shorter videos. I almost always edit mine to less than five minutes.
