As someone looking into starting psychology studies this has helped but I don't particularly understand why psychology in Australia is so convoluted. Speaking from an RN perspective
Hi Kathleen! I’m a psychologist from Turkiye and this video really helped me to understand the psychology education system of Australia. Thank you so much!
Hi Kathleen, this is one of the most comprehensive videos on pathways to becoming a psychologist in aus. So, thanks so much for that! I'm looking to do a master's in professional psych, however, i think it might be beneficial to talk to someone who's already a psychologist to understand the profession a little bit better and understand what everyday on the job looks like. Would love to connect with you if you've got some time!
Thank you so much for this video, Kathleen! I'm currently completing my 4th year honours with final exams coming up in about a week. I've spent a lot of time trying to decide whether I want to complete the Professional Psychology Masters or the Clinical Psychology Masters. I've applied for both and my heart's always been set on the Professional Psych Masters because I am so eager to get out of the classroom and start working with clients. I love the idea of the bridging courses to become a clinical psych after working for some time in the field. I still can't decide which degree I would rather undertake as I feel like if I don't at least try to go for the clinical masters them I'm letting myself down. I am similar to you in that there's so much I want to experience in my 20s away from uni and my career because there's so many things I want to achieve, for example, travel being a main one. I also think I am one of those people where working in the field will serve me much better in the long run but there's just so many unknowns and I hate the idea of having regrets in the future for not picking one Masters program over the other. Sorry for the really long message but your video was super clear and helped put a lot into perspective.
Hey, thanks so much for the message! I completely relate to wanting to make your twenties about psychology + other pursuits like travel and can't recommend the professional masters enough. I can also relate to feeling like you "need" to do the clinical masters. They're both great programs, so whatever you get into, you can't go wrong - always happy to have a chat if you want to talk to someone about it :)
@@kathleenanne Apologies for taking so long to respond! But I'd love to chat if you've got a free moment. Is there any way I can contact you privately. Thanks heaps!
Hi Kathleen, thanks for posting this video, it really cleared things up for me. I've just finished (still awaiting) my results and thought I had to do an honours/bridging course to be eligible for the Masters of Professional Psych. I really appreciate the clarity of your video.
Hey, I’m so glad this cleared things up! At the moment - to my knowledge - only two unis offer the 2-year professional masters to students who haven’t completed honours (ANU and Uni of Melbourne). All the best with your studies! 😄
I could be wrong but I'm fairly certain you have to do Honours or Grad Dip before you do Masters in Professional Psychology. That is as of today's date - Feb 2023 (this video was a while ago and they have since scrapped the 4 + 2 pathway). 3 year undergrad and then 4th year (Honours or Grad Dip). Then Masters.
Hey Olivia, In the last couple of years the ANU and University of Melbourne have introduced a 2 year professional masters program, that students can do straight after their 3 year undergrad. The program equates to a 1 year honours + 1 year masters, then students would need to do their 1 year internship - hope this helps in clarifying :)
Thank you so much Kathleen! This takes a lot of stress off me, I definitely will look at the generalist pathway. Although I'm still struggling through my undergrad 😅. I'm doing a double degree in marketing and psychology (which I both really love doing). Some people have recommended me to drop the marketing but I really feel like it will be useful for me, as a way to better promote mental health in the future. I was wondering if you happen to have an opinion on this? Also any tips for studying better? hahaha
Hey Nohon, I'm so glad it helped! Marketing and psychology go really well together. Depending on what you want to do - if you want to become a psychologist, you'll need to learn how to market yourself, but if you want to get into marketing or working with businesses, having a background in psychology will give you an edge. Sounds like you're enjoying both degrees, so you can't go wrong - both skillsets are valuable :) In terms of the study, what have you been finding tough? A psych degree is competitive and difficult, so there's an element of burnout that can get people down (it definitely got to me). If you send me a message on LinkedIn or Insta (you can find my profile via my newsletter link), I'd be really happy to chat to you about it more! Wishing you all the best :)
A very late comment, but have you ever looked into ‘applied psychology’ (e.g., masters of applied psychology at university of Melbourne), which focuses a lot on psychology application on a broader level (vs. clinical, which focuses on individuals). Such courses include content such as behaviour change, branding and marketing etc., which seems to be what you’re interested in, and will allow you to integrate both your interest in psych and marketing!
Hi Kathleen, great video. I’m currently undertaking my master of clinical psychology (MCP) and felt it was worth mentioning that most MCP programs are Commonwealth supported (CSP). The one year master of professional psychology (MPP) equivalent at my university costs about $30k (generalists), whereas my 2 year MCP (endorsement) is only $8k. Would definitely say a huge benefit of MCP is that your HECS debt won’t double in one year!
Hi Hazel, Thanks for sharing this. That's awesome you were able to get a CSP place for an MCP at your uni 😃 I intentionally didn't go into the CSP in this video as from my research and understanding, the CSP varies greatly across uni's and are offered for both MCP and MPP. They can also differ strongly in terms of competition. In hindsight I could of pointed this out, but didn't want to overwhelm the viewer. It's definitely something I'll consider talking about for future content though and appreciate your feedback 😊
Hi @@kathleenanne thanks for your reply ☺️ it is my understanding that CSP is primarily offered for MCP, as I’ve personally never come across a CSP MPP program when I was doing my research (but granted I was only researching the east coast of Aus). I’m not sure that the CSP payment rates vary across unis, but I am aware that they do differ from year to year (as it is contingent on government funding). But I completely agree that all information available is extremely confusing and overwhelming, and content like yours that clearly explains it is much needed 😀
Thanks for your video. I think it's important to mention the only two universities that offer the Master of Professional Psychology are located in Melbourne and Canberra. Everyone else outside that region, or those who prefer online study, will not have this option.
THANK YOU. You have just saved me truckloads of money and stress. My current GPA is 6.5 BUT the toll it took on my young family is OBSCENE. I was even wondering if I wanted to continue putting myself through it. I owe you a great deal of gratitude.
This video blew my mind - i had no idea you could do professional psyc masters without honours!! i am not keen on being a scientist - but a psychologist and im currently in my 2nd year of undergrad and wonder why they are training us to become more research based. Do you know why only some uni's offer the masters without an honours? thanks again for your video!! you've restored faith in me!
Aww I'm so glad it helped!! I'm really passionate about spreading awareness of the 3 year bachelor + 2 year masters pysch pathway, it's a hidden gem! The reason why only 2 unis offer it atm (to my knowledge), is because it's very new (introduced as the 4+2 pathway was phased out). But this is the mainstream pathway that will be pushed and more uni's are expected to follow suit over the next decade. Hope this helps - all the best with your studies :)
Hi Kate, I'm also Kathleen (aka Kate)! I wanted to thank you for your video, it's really informative and has helped to clear up some of the confusion I had on the different pathways.
Hi kathleen, i currently graduated from high school and planning to become a neuropsychologist in australia, can you please tell me the steps that i can follow to do so, i love this area of science and your channel truly helped me a lot! Additionally, i'm not sure which city to work in, my preference however is Perth, please give me your valuable insights, thank you so much
@@FronkeyExtrawhat uni r u aiming for? Some unis may have pre reqs, you can just look them up online in the uni’s website, same with ATAR. I went to Macquarie and I didn’t do any math subjects (which is a pre requisite for some unis that offer psych). I had an ATAR of 80 as well.
No prerequisites but I’d recommend doing maths in high school/college to help with stats and aim to get a high ATAR (80 is around the cut off for entry). Hope this helps!! 😄
Hey Kathleen, Thanks so much for making this video! As someone who is completing their 3rd-year of a Bachelor in Psychology, I always believed that honours (or an honours equivalent) was a compulsory part of both the generalist and endorsed pathways. Would you be open to me asking you a few questions via email or perhaps LinkedIn? Let me know when you can 😁 Regards, Charlie
Hi Charlie, Thanks so much for sharing - I'm glad it helped! After making this video (and doing a bit more reflecting), one thing I should have made clearer is that the two year professional masters program is still relatively new. Essentially it combines honours and a 1 year masters together as a 2 year masters program. From my understanding, it's likely this pathway will become more mainstream, as universities like ANU have been pushing for it for a long time. However at the moment (from what I can gather) only two uni's are offering this pathway, so this may impact your decision. I'd be really happy to answer any questions or put you in touch with other people that might be able to help - add me on LinkedIn and let's go from there :)
Hi Kathleen, I love your videos thank you so much! I'm a current student studying Graduate Diploma in Psychology, and just wondering if I can apply Master of Professional Psychology afterward or if it's only for those who graduated from undergrad? I'm in my mid-30s and am doing a postgrad aiming to change my career path. So watching your video and knowing that there's a slightly shorter pathway is such exciting news to me!
Hey Sonia, thanks for you kind words! I believe you would need to do a grad dip advanced (which is the equivalent of honours), to then apply for a professional masters :)
Hi Kathleen! Loving your videos - I'm also currently studying at ANU and this is so useful! I was wondering if you could do a video on the clinical experience that you did during your undergrad to support your masters application? E.g. volunteering or paid work experience?
Hello Kathleen! My sista is fully recognised Neuropsychologist in India right now (she completed all her education in India, i.e Bachelor of sci in psych., m. sc in Neuropsychology and m. Phil in clinical psych and got licensing in India), please share details of how she can move to Australia and what all are needed to practice as a neuropsychologist in Australia as a person who completed education in India 😊❤
Hi Kathleen, Thank you, great information! I am in my second year of my Bachelor of Psychology with UniSA, and I am exploring the best pathway to become a Criminal or Forensic Psychologist. I would love to hear your thoughts :)
Hey Peta, That's really exciting! I don't know a lot about forensic psychology but happy to answer any questions if you email me via info@kathleenanne.org :)
Hi Kathleen, really helpful video. I'm still in high school right now and am about to choose my senior subjects, and i'm wondering what subjects you chose for your senior years and what youd recommend for others in my position. Thanks :)
Hi Merlox, so glad to hear the videos have been helpful! I would recommend going with your interests - I know this is vague, but it won't greatly impact uni. If your school offers psych courses, definitely go with this, or possibly science units. In my senior years at high school I studied: English, French, maths, history and psychology 😊
Hey, this video gives a great information. Would you make a video for students who graduate in a foreign country (India) and wish to pursue masters in psychology in Australia. It would really be great,
This was so informative. Im a mature age student (56 yrs) and an Aboriginal Elder in my community in South West Victoria. Ive just enrolled into the Graduate Diploma of Psychology at Monash University as I cant access work in Mental Health in Victoria. My BA in Health Science (Mental Health) CSU is not recognised in Victoria Health despite having worked in counselling and mental health roles for over 15 years in both Hospital settings in WA and NGO's. Im now interested and working in research on Aboriginal mental health. I have been active in research and teaching Aboriginal students at a local university over the last 4 years now and want to pursue these as well, but I also want to provide counseling to my community as we have no Aboriginal psychologist in our area. Im torn now as I want to do all of them!!!. Given my age, Im also time poor so to speak. Any advice????
I loved reading your background! There's a dire need for first nations voices to be heard in the psychology space and I can appreciate the desire to do everything at once, especially given your diverse skillset. The question to come back to is what's pulling you more - research or practice? The best advice I ever received was to prioritise obtaining registration - which sounds a bit like what you're doing, given that you've enrolled in the Grad dip. Not sure if this helps but I'm wishing you all the very best on your journey!
Hi Kathleen. Thank you so much for sharing this useful information. I just got interested in becoming a psychologist and I love your videos. (I got my start on your videos😄) I have my degrees in not psychology, so I think it'll be suitable for me to start from GDP course (then GDP advanced->Masters, I guess?). I am wondering if it's still possible to become a clinical psychologist after the 5+1 pathway. Or the professional masters degree is required?
The 5+1 pathway IS the professional masters degree (MPP) plus a 1 year internship. Heaps of new bridging courses are available for people who do the 5+1 to do a clinical enforcement, but this can only be done once the internship year is completed and they’re general psychologists.
So glad this video helped and thanks for the kind words 😄Yes, after doing the 5+1 pathway and you've obtained your registration as a psychologist, you can look at doing a bridging masters for a clinical endorsement - hope this helps!
hey Kathleen. thank you so much for this video. I'd love to chat more. I'm currently studying bach psych and questioning why I "wanted" the clinical psyche path so badly when what I want to work on is therapeutical services. I'm a bit lost even wondering if I should transfer to counseling, but then concerned about having no medicare rebate and how that could affect etc. Would love to chat and get your view since you made to the "other side" . thanks again.
Hey Camilla, completely relate to this and I'd be happy to have a chat! If you reach out to me on LinkedIn (link via my newsletter in the bio), we can coordinate :)
This video really helped me. thank you so much, I'm glad that I found your channel. :) I have a question. I'm a psychology student in Iran. Is it possible for me to apply for masters of clinical psychology in Australia, and after educating and training, can I become a therapist in Australia? Can you guide me about this, please? Thank you, Have a nice day. :)
great video an soso informative pls do share more about how indian student can pursue being a psychologists in australia would love to see more vids of yours
Hi Kathleen! Glad I found this video 😊 I am an international student (from Malaysia) and I am planning to take masters in Psychology in Australia. My only concern is, I took a different bachelor's degree (BSBA Human Resource Management). Will I still be eligible to take masters there? I hope I can get a reply 🤗
Hey Arem, Thanks for reaching out! To qualify for a masters in psych, you will need a bachelor in science majoring in psych or a bachelor in pscyh + honours. However if your undergrad degree is different, you could look into doing a diploma and advanced diploma in psych, which would qualify you. Hope this helps!
Hi Kathleen! I have a question you may be able to answer. I am an Irish person looking to move to Australia and I want to know if I would be qualified to work as a provisional psychologist. I got a First in my undergrad in Psychology and a First in my MSc in Clinical Neuropsychology. I also have worked as an Assistant Psychologist for a year. I only want to find a job for a couple of years, then I will go back to Ireland to do the Doctorate in Clinical Psychology to qualify here. So do you think I would be able to work as a provisional psychologist? Thanks for your advice!
Thank you Kathleen! Great and informative video Question, I'm near ending my Grad Dip of Psych Science (equivalent to BA of Psych), Im interested in the Generalist Pathway, do you know of any Australian universities that offer the Masters of Prof Psych with a WAM in the 70s? Also do you know a general cost for these? Thank you
Thanks so much for this valuable explanation. It's concerning that the Government has allowed such a jig saw puzzle of courses to develop. I can't really see why they differentiate between Hons and Grad Dips in terms of 4th year and then Masters eligibility. It only creates varying classes of psychs which is then differentiated in terms of payment with Medicare. At a time when there's such a need for registered psychologists, I can't see students opting to undertake a 6 year program. How do we get a link to your newsletter or LinkedIn?
Hi Kathleen! Thanks so much for this video :) I currently have a Diploma of Mental Health and am considering doing further study and was just wondering if you happen to know whether my Diploma is likely to gain me any credit towards a Psychology undergrad degree? I’ve been trying to sus it out myself but the answers seem to vary 😂 Thank you!
Hey Tara, Thanks so much! My best guess is that it would depend on the uni - they might let you use it as credit towards an elective but I'd say chances would slimmer for the diploma to count towards compulsory psych subjects. Hope this helps - it's a great degree and I wish you all the best :)
Hi, Tara! I know the question was aimed at Kathleen but I thought I would help. I completed a Diploma of Counselling and I had 80 credit points accepted as RPL for a Bachelor of Psychology at Macquarie University. They counted toward flexible units (60 credits) and then 2 of my electives (20 units) together. I mainly study the core units and don't have to pick any electives until 3rd year. I hope this helps!
@@mudmonster6201 Hi! Oh thank you so much for answering my question! Your comment was super helpful :) It’s great to know you got so many credits for your prior learning!
Just to add to this. I got a Diploma of Mental Health from TAFE in WA and it got me 2 units off from the University of Western Australia but 8 from Edith Cowan University (essentially a year off), so I recommend asking around the unis you're intested in. Hope it helps! Great video Kathleen btw, it's super helpful! Thank you so much for it!
Hi Kathleen, loved your video. I am 💯motivated to pursue a program + career in clinical psychology, unfortunately my background is completely unrelated to this field. I am from India, my bachelors was in engineering followed by an MBA in marketing and post 8.5 years in big tech I want to completely pivot my career based on the lived experiences I have had. Would you have any guidance on where to start?
I recommend doing a graduate diploma in psychology (2 years), then an advanced grad dip (1 year) - then you’ll be eligible to apply for a clinical masters. I hope this helps, wishing you all the best! 😊
Thanks you Kathleen for replying to me, this is great info and a good starting point for me. I will look into it further now so that I can get started. Thanks so much !
I am finishing up a Master/EdD doctorate program in Clinical Mental health counseling. I want to finish my provisional year in Australia and eventually get licensed there. Is that even possible?
hey, Kat , great vids! thanks ! I finished my bachelor of psych sciences 2 years ago and my dream is to become a psychologist. I love people and learning about their lives and wish to help them if i can. I would love a chat ? as I have questions .... Thanks in advance! looking forward to hopefully talking Sincerest regards Nicholas
Kia ora Kathleen! I am a Master's student in NZ who is looking at potentially moving to AUS to become registered for a change of scene - however, I am really struggling to understand the pathways described online! After I finish my 2 year Masters of Psychology, how can I then do the provisional registration/endorsement to then become a registered psychologist in Australia? Thanks heaps and I look forward to your reply!
Kia ora Ingrid! Thanks for reaching out :) I'm pretty sure that under the Trans Tasman Mutual Recognition Agreement (TTMR) agreement NZ and Aus share, it will be really easy for you to gain registration in Aus. You'll just need to verify your NZ psych registration with APHRA. I would give them a call to discuss your situation and find out what steps to take but I'm pretty confident it will be a straightforward process :) Their international number is +61 3 9285 3010 Hope this helps and wishing you all the best!
Hi Kathleen! Im looking into studying this year and ive been accepted into a bachelor of psychological science. Is this a good program to begin with or should i be looking into a diploma in psychology? BTW i have no other study behind me apart from a diploma in another field (completely unrelated) and I'm looking at becoming a clinical psychologist. Please reply!
Hi Kathleen, thank you for this informative video- simply awesome! I'm from India, and I'd like to have a virtual chat with you about my study options in Australia. Please do let me know when, xx :)
Hi Ashley, Really glad it helped! My social media links are attached to my newsletter (link in the bio). If you want to send me a message via linkedin, I'd be happy to have a chat :)
Hi Kathleen. I have signed up for a grad diploma in psychology as I have an undergraduate in a different field. I was told by APAC if I complete this course and then an honours, I can work in previsional research as an assistant and then work as a psychologist when I complete the masters. There seems to be a lot of conflicting information out there, so any clarity would be really appreciated.
If you’ve done a bachelor in another discipline, then you’ll need to do a grad diploma in psych, then an advanced grad diploma or honours, and then you’ll be able to apply for a masters 😄
Hi Kathleen, I completed BSc psychology from India. I am looking forward to do my masters in Australia and eventually become a clinical psychologist. Is it feasibile?
Hi Mystic, Thanks for reaching out. This is feasible - if possible it would be highly beneficial to do your honours in Australia, and then apply for a clinical masters. Application to both is highly competitive for all students (international and national). I hope this helps, wishing you all the best!
Hi Kathleen! 😊 I was wondering, is there a difference if my BSc in Psychology is 3 years study? I’m already in my second year, but it’s not a 4 years study, so I’m not sure if there’s anything else I need to do before I can apply for a Masters. Thank you! ❤
you can apply for an honours year as your 4th year of study :D psych degrees alone usually are 3 years and the honours year is the 4th year of study :3
hi kath thats a lovely video hope u dont mind me asking I already finished my bachelor of science in psychology but not in australia is there unis still credit that since i wanted to take masters in clinical or general psych by the way thank you for explanaining this with awesome tips 😊
Hi Marife, Thanks for reaching out! I recommend getting in contact with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA), as they're best placed to answer your question - www.ahpra.gov.au/About-Ahpra/Contact-Us.aspx It might also be a good idea to look at what uni's you would like to apply to. You'll probably need to do an honours year before a masters, so check out uni's honour programs and find out the requirements (e.g., do they accept international applicants). Proficiency in English is also a requirement for all honours and masters programs. I really hope this helps, wishing you all the best! 😊 Kathleen
Kathleen , Thank you for the video, It was really helpful. I want to know more about how the job would be like after becoming a psychologist. How are the job opportunities . Would like to connect with you if you can spare some time . thank you.
Hi Kathleen! Thank you so much for explaining everything! I’m currently in the midst of completing 2nd year and 3rd year units and have 1 year left before honours and I have a few questions if there’s any way I can contact you!
Hey Dewi, There's links to my insta and LinkedIn on my newsletter page (link in the description of this video) - send me a message on one of those platforms, and I'd be happy to help in any way I can :)
Hi Kathleen, I am about to finish my 3rd year undergrad in Psychological Science. Im interested in the third (generalised) pathway you are talking about. I have checked some universities and they are all asking for honours first to be accepted into the masters of prof psychology, Which university(ies) did you come across that would accept directly from the undergrad ? Thanks for your great information.
The two universities in Australia currently offering a professional masters w/o honours are the Australian National University and the University of Melbourne 😄 the caveat is that their professional masters program goes for two years instead of one!
@@kathleenanne wow thannks a lot for this information. So valuable to me... I work in the field for many years and have 3 children so really time poor. However I don't have the best marks, my gpa will be roughly around a C, around 5 maybe even less. I guess I could do the application but I don't know if the marks would be good enough to get into masters directly. Do you have any insight on this ? I cant thank you enough
Hello Kathleen! Thank you for such an informative video! What are your thoughts about Monash's 1 Year Master in Professional Psychology after a Year 4 that could be taken as a grad dip in professional psych against ANU & UniMelb's professional psychology program? Thank you again! :)
Hey Elizabeth, thanks for the comment! I don't know much about Monash's program, so don't feel I can give an opinion about their program. Personally I feel the two year professional masters at ANU and MelbUni is a great initiative for getting through the study and into a career faster, and are both excellent programs. But the standard for psychology in Aus is very high across unis, so I don't think you can go wrong with whatever path you pick :)
Do you think I should gather as much experience as I can in my first year in bachelor of psych? I’m planning on quitting my hospitality job in order to fully commit to volunteer positions
Hey there! I am in my mid 30s and have studied at uni before for my bachelors and masters in IT. I do love my job but I would like to study psychology maybe for a career transition or after hours work in the near future. I love how the human mind is and would love to help others in the future . Is there a fast track my study option ?
Hi I am in my final semester of 3rd year Psychology I'd love to chat to you about potential options to become a general psychologist, how can I contact you?
Hey Isabelle, if you click on my newsletter link in the description, it has my insta and LinkedIn attached - send me a message on one of those platforms and we can work out a day/time for a chat :)
I have completed my 3 years bachelors on psychology and 2 years masters in psychology. I have 7 years of experience on relevant field. All are from overseas. 1.Am I eligible for migrating asutralia? 2. Am I eligible for positive skill assessment? 3. Am I eligible for giving national psychology exam at Australia?
Hi Kathleen, Thanks for creating this video! I want to pursue my master degree in Australia and want to know the path for foreign student. Maybe if you have the time, is it possible for us to have a chat? Thanks! 😊
Thanks for reaching out and that's really exciting! ATM with work + study I don't have the capacity to speak with students like I used to, but Aphra is always a great place to start if you have questions - I hope this helps :)
Hi K thanks for your video. It helps alot. I need more info on this. I have an undergraduate in P and want to do thr Masters in Clinical Psych. I did my undergraduate in South Africa. Where do I start?
Hi Kathleen I've completed my high school and currently studying Bsc in clinical psychology 1st year I'm from India and I want to continue my masters and become a clinical psychologist in Australia can you please guide me through what I have to do for it
If you’re studying in India, I’d recommend reaching out to Aphra to discuss any additional requirements you’d need, to have your qualifications recognised in Aus - in Australia clinical psychologists need to follow a sequence of 6 years of study (3 year bachelor, 1 year honours, 2 year masters)
Excellent. Thank you so much for making this video. Very informative and easy to understand. I was wondering if we could have a chat as well, as I have some questions. I have emailed you as well. thank you.
Hi Katheleen, thank you so much for the video! I’m going to apply for a graduate diploma in Psychology and honors, and then master degree. Just a quick question! To get into master degree clinical psychology, does it matter what university you graduated from for honors? Does the name value of the university make a difference? Thank you :)
Hey Sunny! Great question - this is what I know from word of mouth (so take it with a grain of salt).. To some extent universities may unintentionally favour students who've attended honours or undergrad at that institution. This is because these students have rapport with staff, share the same values, connections in research etc. That being said, it shouldn't overly influence the outcome.. What will stand out most are personality traits, research/grades and work experience. I've known applicants that went to lower ranking institutions, only to be successful in gaining acceptance into higher ranking institutions for a clinical masters. The program is extremely competitive in general, but worth aiming for (apply to a few institutions) if you know it's what you want. Hope this helps :)
@@kathleenanne Hey Kathleen, thank you so much for your reply! It helped a lot🥰 Now I choose down to go to a graduate dip with either UNE or Cairnmillar as UNE offers CSP but I found Cairnmillar offer shorter length(1yr) and even cheaper than UNE. As far as I know, Cairnmillar is not a university, does this ultimately matter when I want to pursue 4th year degree (honours etc)?Thank you so much!
Hello Kathleen, I'm studying psychology in India, and my bachelor's degree(honours) is a three-year program instead of four and I wanna move to Aus after my bachelors. What should I do in this situation?
Hi Kathleen, thank you so much for this video. Can u please guide me on how to get my degree (BSc Psychology) assessed from an Australian Psychology Accreditation Council (APAC)- for International students in order to apply for Masters in Psychology in Australia. I am from India and my Bachelor was of three years in India.
Hi Leny, thanks for reaching out - for this it would be best to contact APHRA - hope this helps 😊 www.psychologyboard.gov.au/Registration/Provisional/~/link.aspx?_id=60F806737FE14B28AF314FB306B4BFBE&_z=z
Hi there, you would need to do a bachelor majoring in psychology to apply for a two year masters or do a bachelor majoring in psychology + honours in psychology to do a 1 year masters - hope this helps :)
Hi Kathleen, I am a dentist from overseas and have a masters in clinical psychology from overseas as well. Is my degree valid in Australia because I don’t have a 3-4 year bachelor’s in Psychology. Can you please advise me how to get registered. Do you think doing phd is an option? Thanks much 😊
Thanks for reaching out! It’s tricky - from my understanding, I think you need to have done a bachelor + honours in psych. But I’d recommend talking to APHRA to find out more information, they’ll be able to help 😄
Hi, I’m an Indian student currently in 12th standard(senior year of high school)!! I’m looking for bachelors of psychology in Australia and I’m from a medical background so is bachelors of psychological science preferred or bachelors of science majoring in psychology? I’m looking forward to be a clinical psychologist with an interest in research:)
Hey Kathleen, I just completed my 3 years undergraduate degree in psychology honours. Will it be enough for me to directly join for masters in clinical psychology?
Hey Anna, there’s a two year professional masters you could apply for at ANU or University of Melbourne, which doesn’t require honours and will lead you to general registration - but for a masters of clinical psychology you will need to complete honours. Hope this helps :)
Hi Kathleen, Thank you so much for such as informative Video. Would you know of other universities that offers MAsters of professional psychology within Sydney. Or an online based. Unfortunately, The ANU and Melbourne do not offer online. And if i wish to study there then will require my whole family move. Thank you so much again. :)
Hi Aish, Macquarie uni does a 1 year professional masters program - you would need to have done your honours year though, and it's competitive to apply. I imagine there's other uni's in Sydney with 1 year masters programs - definitely worth looking into! Wishing you all the best :)
I'm an international student who is going to join for undergrad in Australia but I'm not sure which course i should choose to go deep into neuroscience. Should I go for bachelor of psychology (cognitive neuroscience) or should I go for bachelor of psychological sciences and then choose neuroscience as minor or co major?
Hey kathleen , I did my master's in clinical psychology(from india) now i want to study abroad to become a clinical psychologist .So what exam or path should i be looking for ? Please help me out
Hi, I’m already working and want to enter the field of psychology to work as a psychologist or in counselling. Is there any path through which I can do a course to enter the Field and then earn and make my way up. Thanks
As I highlight in the video, there are only two universities in Australia currently offering a professional masters w/o honours, which are the Australian National University and the University of Melbourne - the caveat is that their professional masters program go for two years instead of one!
Hello, I just graduated from MSc in applied Psychology in india and I am planning on doing masters in clinical psychology in australia. Phd is too costly and I want to specialize since my masters was too broad. I am so confused about the pathways to take since I have already done 5 years in psychology. Please help me.
Hi, have you qny experience or know of how a UK based individual who completes a MSc Psychology can buiod a career in Australia? My background and undergraduate degree is not in psychology.
You’d likely need to do further study if you want to be recognised as a registered psych in Aus. A good place to start is by talking to Aphra about your situation
Hello mam... I have done my masters in clinical psychology from India Madhya Pradesh (Indore)... I want to work as a clinical or counselling psychologist in foreign not India. Pls guide me how to go to there....and pursue PhD in clinical psychology. As well as practicing there after completing study. Thankyou. Regards.
Hey Catherine, I have an undergrad in Counselling Psychology( BachelorsofArt), from Kenyan Local University! would this pathway be applicable for me the 4+2 as am looking for opportunities to eventually do Masters in clinical Psyc?
Hey Aggie! Unfortunately the 4+2 has discontinued - to eligible for a masters you would need a bachelor of science (psychology) and honours. Best of luck!
Hey Mehtab, Have you looked into masters for organisational psychology? Macquarie offers a great program: mq.edu.au/study/find-a-course/courses/master-of-organisational-psychology All the best!
Hi Kate, I wanna go back to study and potentially became a psychologist, how can we chat? do offer some kind of service? I really guidance, as I'm an Australian PR.
Hi kathleen, I have just completed my bachelor's in india and want to become a clinical psychologist in Australia. Can you suggest some colleges in Melbourne for studies
Hi Kathleen, I have an 3 yrs B.A. undergrad from Nepal in psychology and i am thinking to join masters. What are the extra courses i will have to study?
Hi Islam, A lot of people start studying psychology late in life - My mum didn't start her undergrad until she was 38. I'm unclear if you've started studying yet, or if you're based in Australia. It might be helpful to contact the APS or APHRA to see if they can offer any information, as it can really depend on individual circumstances.
@@kathleenanne Thanks for your response. I studied computer science earlier in my path and currently working in IT. I am looking for a career change. I live in Sydney and work here. I will try to contact APS or APHRA to understand where does my oversees degree stands in the process where do I need to start if I want to become a clinical psychologist. If I have any other questions, would you prefer email OR LinkedIn communication?
Hi Sai, The two year professional masters program is still very new in Aus and only a couple of universities are offering it. This means that if you're applying internationally, it will likely be more competitive. I would recommend also applying to honours programs. Hope this helps! :)
I did my bachelor of medicine and surgery in bangladesh. Now I want to migrate in Australia and become a clinical psychologist. Is it possible to admit in psychology masters program without doing bachelor in psychology?
Hi Arfaan, to be accepted into a masters of clinical psychology you would need to have a bachelor and honours in psychology or the equivalent (grad dip) as the minimum. I'd recommend giving APHRA a call to discuss. Hope this helps :)
Hi Kathleen I'm have a three year bachelors of arts degree with honours in psychology from India. How to apply for masters in Australia as most of universities accept four year bachelors
Hi Manveer, If you're applying from overseas, it might be a good idea to get in touch with APHRA to confirm your qualification's are recognised. You'll also need to prove that you're fluent in English. For some uni's, you can apply directly through their website for master's programs and for others you'll need to apply via UAC www.uac.edu.au/future-applicants/how-to-apply-for-uni I hope this helps! :)
Hi Mam, thanks for valuable info.,I wish to do ph. D in Psychology in Australia. Can u plz suggest me how can I get the addmision. I m from Kashmir ,India
Hey Dar, you would need to have done the equivalent of a bachelor in psychology + honours as a minimum. There might also be other requirements for international students - it's worth doing some research into this. Wishing you all the best!
hii Kathleen i am pursuing my masters in psychology from inda rn but i want to work in australia as certified psychologist in future can you please tell if it possible to do so and if yes then how. Thank You
It’s definitely possible - I’d recommend talking to Aphra to find out how to make the transition with your qualifications. You would likely need to sit the National Psychology Exam - hope this helps 😊
You’ll need to do honours or an advanced grad diploma in psychology first + make sure your degree is recognised in Aus and that you meet the English fluency requirements. Hope this helps and best of luck!
Being not far off finishing my bachelor of psychology, it feels like the field of psych is more about sounding academic than understanding psychology. The degree is full of un necessary information, non relevant assessments even for say people who want to go down the research path. The degrees are insanely expensive, especially for a career that doesn’t isn’t as lucrative of pay as say being a GP. I’m passionate about people so I’m sticking it out, but after 3 years of uni my mind hasn’t changed that it’s mostly a bunch of nonsense.
Thanks for sharing your input, I think you make some excellent points. Hopefully psychology will continue to evolve as a discipline - I honours was way better than my undergrad in terms of content/learning 🤍 best of wishes with your study!
So glad it helped! 😄
thank you so much for this video! pathways are unbelievably complicated but your video is so comprehensive!
Really glad this helped 😊
Hi Kathleen, this is one of the most comprehensive videos on pathways to becoming a psychologist in aus. So, thanks so much for that! I'm looking to do a master's in professional psych, however, i think it might be beneficial to talk to someone who's already a psychologist to understand the profession a little bit better and understand what everyday on the job looks like. Would love to connect with you if you've got some time!
Hi Amirtha, I'm so glad this was helpful! Sure thing, reach out to me via info@kathleenanne.org and we can organise a chat :)
This is the most useful video on deciding a pathway I have ever watched. Thank you
Thank you! I’m so glad it helped 😊
Thank you so much. Im a mature age student looking to return to study at midlife, so knowing my options and choosing the best pathway for me critical.
Also any tips for studying better? hahaha
Hey Nohon,
I'm so glad it helped!
Marketing and psychology go really well together. Depending on what you want to do - if you want to become a psychologist, you'll need to learn how to market yourself, but if you want to get into marketing or working with businesses, having a background in psychology will give you an edge. Sounds like you're enjoying both degrees, so you can't go wrong - both skillsets are valuable :)
In terms of the study, what have you been finding tough?
I was wondering, as a high school student, are there any prereqs to get into psychology? also, what kind of ATAR do we need?
Hi Kathleen, great video. I’m currently undertaking my master of clinical psychology (MCP) and felt it was worth mentioning that most MCP programs are Commonwealth supported (CSP). The one year master of professional psychology (MPP) equivalent at my university costs about $30k (generalists), whereas my 2 year MCP (endorsement) is only $8k. Would definitely say a huge benefit of MCP is that your HECS debt won’t double in one year!
Hi Hazel, Thanks for sharing this. That's awesome you were able to get a CSP place for an MCP at your uni 😃
I intentionally didn't go into the CSP in this video as from my research and understanding, the CSP varies greatly across uni's and are offered for both MCP and MPP.
UNE and SCU in armidale and coffs harbour also both offer masters in professional psychology, and i'd imagine others do too
THANK YOU.
You have just saved me truckloads of money and stress. My current GPA is 6.5 BUT the toll it took on my young family is OBSCENE. I was even wondering if I wanted to continue putting myself through it. I owe you a great deal of gratitude.
Glad this video helped!
Hey Kathleen (Kate 😄), I’m so glad it helped!
Hi kathleen, i currently graduated from high school and planning to become a neuropsychologist in australia, can you please tell me the steps that i can follow to do so, i love this area of science and your channel truly helped me a lot!

I’m going into the final semester of my Psych degree. Thank you for all this info! It was valuable and really insightful :)
I was wondering, as a high school student, are there any prereqs to get into psychology? also, what kind of ATAR do we need?
@@FronkeyExtrawhat uni r u aiming for? Some unis may have pre reqs, you can just look them up online in the uni’s website, same with ATAR. I went to Macquarie and I didn’t do any math subjects (which is a pre requisite for some unis that offer psych). I had an ATAR of 80 as well.
Really glad this helped!!
No prerequisites but I’d recommend doing maths in high school/college to help with stats and aim to get a high ATAR (80 is around the cut off for entry). Hope this helps!! 😄
This is high value stuff. Thanks very much 👌
Hey Kathleen,
Thanks so much for making this video! As someone who is completing their 3rd-year of a Bachelor in Psychology, I always believed that honours (or an honours equivalent) was a compulsory part of both the generalist and endorsed pathways. Would you be open to me asking you a few questions via email or perhaps LinkedIn? Let me know when you can 😁
Regards, Charlie
Hey, thanks so much for sharing! Absolutely, that's a great idea - I'll dedicate the video to you :) All the best with your studies at ANU!

Thank you so much for this!

Thanks so much - I’ll look into doing a video for this 😊
Hi Kathleen!
@@kathleenanne thank you so much for this! 💗
Great and informative video
Question, I'm near ending my Grad Dip of Psych Science (equivalent to BA of Psych), Im interested in the Generalist Pathway, do you know of any Australian universities that offer the Masters of Prof Psych with a WAM in the 70s? Also do you know a general cost for these? Thank you
Thanks so much for this valuable explanation. It's concerning that the Government has allowed such a jig saw puzzle of courses to develop. I can't really see why they differentiate between Hons and Grad Dips in terms of 4th year and then Masters eligibility. It only creates varying classes of psychs which is then differentiated in terms of payment with Medicare. At a time when there's such a need for registered psychologists, I can't see students opting to undertake a 6 year program.
How do we get a link to your newsletter or LinkedIn?
Hi Troy, thanks for sharing your thoughts.
The newsletter is on hold at the moment - best way to get in touch is via info@kathleenanne.org :)

Hi Kathleen! Thanks so much for this video :)
I currently have a Diploma of Mental Health and am considering doing further study and was just wondering if you happen to know whether my Diploma is likely to gain me any credit towards a Psychology undergrad degree? I’ve been trying to sus it out myself but the answers seem to vary 😂
Thank you!
Your comment was super helpful :)
It’s great to know you got so many credits for your prior learning!

After I finish my 2 year Masters of Psychology, how can I then do the provisional registration/endorsement to then become a registered psychologist in Australia? Thanks heaps and I look forward to your reply!

I would give them a call to discuss your situation and find out what steps to take but I'm pretty confident it will be a straightforward process :) Their international number is +61 3 9285 3010

There’s not really much of a difference from what I’ve gathered! Best of luck with your psych journey!! 😄
hi kath thats a lovely video hope u dont mind me asking I already finished my bachelor of science in psychology but not in australia is there unis still credit that since i wanted to take masters in clinical or general psych by the way thank you for explanaining this with awesome tips 😊
Hi Marife,
Thanks for reaching out! I recommend getting in contact with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA), as they're best placed to answer your question - www.ahpra.gov.au/About-Ahpra/Contact-Us.aspx
It might also be a good idea to look at what uni's you would like to apply to. You'll probably need to do an honours year before a masters, so check out uni's honour programs and find out the requirements (e.g., do they accept international applicants). Proficiency in English is also a requirement for all honours and masters programs. I really hope this helps, wishing you all the best! 😊

I recommend directing your questions re the NPE with APHRA or the APS, and talking to someone specialised in immigration re your first two queries :)
I recommend talking to Aphra 😊
Please tell me which University is best for psychology UG, Swinburne, Deakin, or la torbe...?
I’m working as a psychologist in India how can I apply for registration
I have emailed you as well. thank you.
Hey, do you have any idea about ABA license???
Hi, Katherine,
I have done graduation in psychology. I want to choose general path. Which university is best and affordable? Please guide me
Hi Katheleen, thank you so much for the video!
I had Already done my masters in clinical Pyscholog. How would I get registration by the govt. as a clinical psychologist in Australia ?
The best way to find out is if you speak to Aphra and get your qualifications assessed 😊
Hello Kathleen, I'm studying psychology in India, and my bachelor's degree(honours) is a three-year program instead of four and I wanna move to Aus after my bachelors. What should I do in this situation?
Talk to Aphra - you’ll likely need to do an honours year or an advanced grad diploma in psych. Best of luck!
Also master of professional psychology is offered by wsu and Macq as a 1 year degree?? Assuming this wouldn’t count as apart of the generalist path?
A lot of unis offer “one year masters” for students who did honours and want to pursue the generalist pathway 😊
Hi Kathleen, I’m looking to become a psychologist with the generalist pathway.. what 3 year undergrad courses are valid for this pathway?
Bachelor of science majoring in psychology should be okay but always check with your course convener first 🫶
Hey Kathleen, I just completed my 3 years undergraduate degree in psychology honours.
Hi kathleen
If we do masters combined with phd can we still practice as a psychologist or is it only beneficial for academia?
As long as you do the masters component 😄
If you want to go deep into neuroscience, then the first option sounds like the best 😊
Hey kathleen , I did my master's in clinical psychology(from india) now i want to study abroad to become a clinical psychologist .So what exam or path should i be looking for ? Please help me out
Hi There, I'd recommend contacting Aphra to have your qualifications assessed - best of luck!
Hi, I’m already working and want to enter the field of psychology to work as a psychologist or in counselling. Is there any path through which I can do a course to enter the Field and then earn and make my way up. Thanks
Yeah! I’d recommend doing a grad dip in psychology and then an advanced grad dip - you can study part time and the apply for a masters 😊 best of luck
All of the masters of professional psychology courses I have seen require an honours year and GPA of 70% too.
I’d recommend contacting APHRA to find out what your requirements are for getting your qualifications recognised in Australia 😄
Does a PhD in clinical psychology make me eligible to practice as a clinical psychologist in Australia?
You’d need to have your qualifications checked by Aphra
Hello mam...
I have done my masters in clinical psychology from India Madhya Pradesh (Indore)...
I want to work as a clinical or counselling psychologist in foreign not India.
Pls guide me how to go to there....and pursue PhD in clinical psychology. As well as practicing there after completing study.

Thank you Catherine.🤝Blessings
Hey
Uk citizen here, I have a masters in clinical psychology from the uk. I would still to do the masters in Australia before the registrar program?
I recommend checking with Aphra 😊
Hey, I want to do masters in organizational psychology . Kindly help me out in this . Thanks!
Hey Mehtab,
Have you looked into masters for organisational psychology? Macquarie offers a great program: mq.edu.au/study/find-a-course/courses/master-of-organisational-psychology
All the best!
I’ve heard University of Melbourne and Monash are really good!
Hi Kathleen, I have an 3 yrs B.A. undergrad from Nepal in psychology and i am thinking to join masters. What are the extra courses i will have to study?
Hi Rahul, You would likely need to do an honours program in Australia to then get into a masters. Wishing you all the best! :)
What was your University?
I went to the Australian National University :)
@@kathleenanne thanks and i have a question I'm from india and i want do apply for psychology can you check/ tell me requirements
Kathleen you are very cute 😊&
Your explanation style is awesome ❤
So glad it helped! 😊
Hi Kathleen, I am in my 40 and I want to study and become a clinical psychologist in Australia.
Do you see this as a pheasible option?
Is it ok to do a 3 year bachelor degree and then come to Australia for masters
Hi Kathleen
I'm have a three year bachelors of arts degree with honours in psychology from India. How to apply for masters in Australia as most of universities accept four year bachelors
Hi Manveer,
If you're applying from overseas, it might be a good idea to get in touch with APHRA to confirm your qualification's are recognised. You'll also need to prove that you're fluent in English.
For some uni's, you can apply directly through their website for master's programs and for others you'll need to apply via UAC www.uac.edu.au/future-applicants/how-to-apply-for-uni
I hope this helps!
Wishing you all the best!
hii Kathleen
i am pursuing my masters in psychology from inda rn but i want to work in australia as certified psychologist in future can you please tell if it possible to do so and if yes then how.
Thank You
It’s definitely possible - I’d recommend talking to Aphra to find out how to make the transition with your qualifications. You would likely need to sit the National Psychology Exam - hope this helps 😊
can an international student in education with previous international 18years psychology degree apply for aphra?
I’d recommend talking directly to Aphra about this
If i do a graduate diploma of psycologicist can i apply for skill assessment
You’ll need to talk to Aphra 😊
From India. Iam studying 3rd year of BCA undergraduate degree right now it's a 3 years program. Shall I do masters in psychology in Australia?
