I’m in the middle of my master’s program in counseling. A major reason I chose this field is because of financial and professional autonomy factors. I helped to run a company for over 10 years and know the ins and outs of business finance. A private practice is a radically more simple business model than trying to run a company and sell product. Calculating out a per session fee and client caseload should not “baffle” anyone who’s got a basic understanding of math. Most private counselors in my area charge no less than $130 per 50 minute session, and some go up to $185 / session. Even at the low end, it doesn’t seem unreasonable to make solid income.
The other benefit, is that what if you don’t “need” to make $100K? For example, let’s say you have your own personal life event, like the death of a family member, and you want to work part time for a few months. Well, under your own private practice that’s also totally doable, and you’re not going to piss off some grumpy boss who pays your salary. The autonomy factor for me is huge.

Making six figures in private practice gives us the ability to build a large amount of savings and investments, and that offers far more security than any other type of job--and with a much healthier schedule and frequency of sessions! Totally worth it, if you ask me.

I have my private practice and have always calculated weekly sessions needed at X dollars to hit a monthly goal to see I am on track to make my yearly goal. Thanks for the info, good stuff. I do like to work part-time and attempt to calculate for cancellations and no-shows.

Yea I was basically told half way through graduate school I should not expect to make much money at all. Starting out around 40k a year. I’m like whaaaa! A master level clinician, the rigor of the work and the standards we are held to as well as the additional hoops we through to get licensed.... seems crazy anyone at that level should be making less than 70k a year baseline. It’s criminal that a licensed therapist makes any less than that. I don’t get how the value of work gets determined. The need for mental health providers is through the roof and there are not enough in the field. I wonder why.... only 40 k a year after working to get a masters degree no wonder no one wants to go into the field.
If you work for a non profit or agency, 40k makes sense.

My sister owns a practice and she bills medicaid. My brother and sister in law do the management.
With 19 therapists under belt.. and only pays them max $35 an hour.. she has made over a million in her first year.
She was working for a therapist and he made the mistake of paying her to do his work. She packed up her bags as soon as she got her doctorate and stole his therapists and he died the next day from a heart attack.. she says. I'm wondering if he committed suicide.
Well societies "standard" for people that need it the most is to "not kill themselves" sadly.... the public has little regard for the average himans need to "thrive"

noshaigirl it depends on the route you go and the effort you put into marketing you business. Private counselors can be pretty comfortable. Don’t cheap out on yourself and know your worth is the biggest advice I’ve been given from small business owners and private counselors.

Most therapists, but not all, accept insurance reimbursement. That can typically be approximately $80 per session. One would have to determine how many insurance clients and how many direct pay clients they will likely need per week to end up with the desired income. Direct pay clients or more likely to in therapy sooner than insurance clients meaning there has to be a more frequent flow of new clients.

I have a buddy who makes 200k a year through private sessions, consultation, and supervision but works his assssss off. I work part time but like the private practice and make more and work less than in an organization. Also because we live in a rural area the areas are not saturated with practitioners so we can make more. Great video very accurate.

So I am currently in the second semester of my master's program to become licensed in TN. Do you have any advice/tips for someone in this season of life? You have to put in the work for a self owned practice just like any privately owned business but good money can be made.
This video is awesome. I’m considering pursuing a graduate degree and license in mental health counseling to hopefully open a private practice. Like another commenter said, salary information for this line of work is all over the place online.. I don’t even necessarily need to make 6 figures, but knowing that I won’t be broke is encouraging. It seems possible to make at least $70,000-$80,000 in this field, but a lot of people tell me I’ll be broke..

The mental Health provider I am working on she is making only $76.53 per session by Medicaid and therefore she wants to quit Medicaid but even the commercial highesy reimbursement is $125.80 per session.

that's awesome!! if you can go slowly, it will work to your advantage. you'll have less pressure to grow quickly and can instead grow over time, and make better decisions. That being said, if you need to grow fast, you absolutely can!
Although your point is well taken and I appreciate that you are helping counselors think about these things, there's a couple of problems with this. First, the way that you came up with the number 130,000 wasn't exactly correct. The problem is that there is a significant difference between 30% of 100k and 30% of 130k. In your example, 130k minus 30% would leave you with 91k (not 100k). You need to calculate it a bit differently. The actual amount needed to be left with 100k after taking 30% away is 142,850. That's a 12k difference. The second problem is that the way you calculate the number of hours worked doesn't factor in no shows, slow months, or other inevitabilities (even with a 48 hour cancelation policy). I do not know any counselors/ therapists that have a 100% fill rate. So, the number of hours per week will almost certainly need to be considerably higher. Also, the more fees are dropped and the more hours are added to the equation (e.g., 20 hours at 135 vs 15 at 180), this can actually increase lost revenue by increasing the chances that hours will go unfilled. Theres a balance to that because if the rates are too high, and 180 is getting close to that rate, then the hours are also less likely to be filled. I appreciate the point that you are making and I appreciate that we all need a starting point to calculate our rates, but I feel like this equation might be a little too far off. Either way, thanks for getting my therapist mind thinking about this mathy stuff!

Actually, he never claimed that you're taking home 70% of what you make (where 30% off of 130,000 would be 91,000), but rather adding 30% to your desired take-home pay puts you in the ballpark of what you should charge. It's not intended to be an exact calculation, just a ballpark estimate.

I have a question, If in this hypothetical scenario of $180.55 for 15 clients, how do most clients afford these rates? I would assume it would be through private insurance but does private insurance cover it all for the client usually or is there a copay? Also, how do you stay afloat when you have cancellations for sessions or holidays?
I am answer this for you. Hopefully. You will this. It all depends on your contract with insurance carriers. If you do accept insurance aim to take managed care plans they will pay you at a rate over $125.00 per session. Manage care plans don’t have copays but private insurance does. Private you need to deal with in network fee that you can negotiate with the insurance carrier. Out of network and setting up single case agreements can bring in more money especially if the area doesn’t have your niche. I am revenue cycle director hints the background on insurance knowledge and I am in school for social work. I will start a channel once I graduate to explain about insurance and clinical work.
Some charge over $200 a session and they survive due to their niche. You have to have more clients than you need to account for cancellations. As for insurance, they don’t pay that well, which is why Clinicians don’t want to take insurance. Plus, there are other headaches that come with taking insurance clients.
I do all of my own credentialing and billing. Get very firm on cancelation fees. ❤
That's for cash pay. If you need to take insurance because you're not getting patients who can afford over $100 a session, lower your annual salary expectations. You'll be paying a company to file claims for you.
FYI: You say conservative twice at 2:25 and I think you meant to say conservative and then aggressive (or the like).

From my understanding you can’t do private practice as a school psychologist. That’s why I’m going the doctorate route and becoming a counseling psychologist. Wish school psychologist did more therapy but I figured I could become a psychologist n focus on younger kids.
@@ahern1221 Yeah you are right you can't have a private practice unless you get your doctorate (unless you do MFT/counseling) but you can do school based therapy and bill as a school psychologist, but you'd be working at an agency.
I know it varies from state to state. I still am pursing school psychology because I love everything else about the profession. I've spoke to different school psychologists and a few said they don't do any counseling and some say they do quite a bit of counseling but it depends on the district. I also spoke to a school psychologist who has a private practice as well but I'm not too sure how she did it and have lost her contact information :(
I'm thinking I will make sure to get set in a district that allows me to do a good deal of counseling but if not, I could always get my doctorate and also work in private practice as I do not want to be a therapist full-time. And with a doctorate that would also allow me to teach at a university, which I'm thinking I might want to do as well. A lot of options in this field haha

I would challenge you on having such a rigid belief as “nobody in the UK would pay 180.” In reality, maybe no one is currently paying YOU that fee, but I know therapists in the UK who are charging 180 and well beyond. It is all in how we position our value to consumers.

I suppose some people would pay that but from checking the UK Counselling directory, being a supervisor of counsellors, plus being in private practice and inundated with referrals, it would definitely be a small number of clients from a particular economic group who would and could pay £180 per session each week. It doesn’t reflect the national income of the country or how Therapy is viewed in the UK compared to America. Add the fact that people can access free therapy via their GP or some charities, and how many therapists are actually available (many thousands of us). However, I change my word from ‘nobody’ to ‘many people’

It’s annoying that this video didn’t answer the question though? How much do therapists actually MAKE? Still unclear. Vast majority of therapists will not be charging 180$/session. Vast majority of clients will not be paying 180$/session?
I think this video shows that the range could differ greatly depending on how much you charge per session (relative to how much therapists in your area charge) and how many clients you have.
I’m sorry but 100+ dollars per session seems too much.. It will be a great source of income for the therapist, no doubt, however I don’t think it will be an accessible option for most..100 dollars a week can be too much for many who are struggling.. Sure, insurance covered therapy exists, however there are many downsides for the patient and the therapist alike (pressure from the insurance company, a need for a diagnosis etc). I am still studying psychology, so I have a lot to learn. I understand that at the end of the day a private practice can be a business like any other. But I think we should be in this profession to help people, and to help people we need to be an approachable option. Mental health is already tricky for many, and the choice to see a therapist can be hard by itself. The financial barrier shouldn’t be overlooked.

Hey Dillon! Not likely 60 different people per month...most therapy clients come weekly or biweekly, so it would be more like 12-15 different people. If everyone comes weekly, it's 15 individuals who attend therapy weekly.

I’m also in Ca. Im about to be be licensed, but currently just an associate. I’m making around 70k per year. Granted, I work 40-50 hours per week in a treatment facility, so not great hours. However, 70k for someone pre-licensed isn’t terrible. As you likely already know salaries and percentages per session go up significantly once you’re licensed. So I think 56k per year is a little misleading.

I’m still looking at options because 155k of loans for two years of school still sounds like a crippling amount of debt for me. Especially since I’m starting to learn that other California therapist went to other programs that didn’t cost so much or werent even coamfte accredited and have had no problems with obtaining their license

Get an LLC Not s Corp!! You can write off “reasonable income” if you have an llc. Then then pay state tax on income and federal small businesses tax on the rest and you can cut your tax dues in half
