Been a while since I uploaded a regular old battle replay, and some people were asking for more, so here you go! This is one of the largest battles of the entire West Rome Legendary campaign, and was a bit of a risky gamble on my part. You can’t command this many troops effectively without automating or simplifying as much as possible, which is why I don’t pick targets for my onagers and why my infantry formations get more and more chaotic as the battle progresses. For future replays, I was thinking of adding a small text box in the corner of the screen outlining my thoughts and strategy throughout the battle, is that something you’d like to see or would it just make things more visually messy?
I think the text box idea is great. The top right of the screen doesn't really get used, so it's empty space. It'd be great for those who wanna see your thoughts about the tactics and learn about them
I'm all for it. Battle replays can get a bit of chaotic, especially with the camera flying all over the place, so a textbox with brief commentary would actually provide some guidance as to what is going on.
I was one of those people that thought I wouldn't like Warhammer because it wasn't historical, but I just bought it the other day, and I can honestly say I enjoy it more than most other Total Wars. But you're not lying about the map sizes. Warhammer maps are super small compared to other Total War maps.
Attila just has a unique feel to it that none of the other Total War games have. I hope that if they make a Medieval 3, they try and emulate the gritty feel of Attila.
Perhaps if you're playing the Eastern Roman Empire yes. But I think the reason there is this gritty sensation when you play Attila it is because you know that Roman Empire, especially the Western part of the empire, is struggling to survive the waves of catastrophes that it had to face.
Attilas atmosphere was really well done you can feel the cold and starvation more as long campaing went on.Farms becoming useless late game as world gets colder ,soil fertility went bad, hordes coming from east.Epic my favorite TW
I just legion spam (10) and then have two spear men and cavalry at the flanks with three archers behind the infantry alongside two siege weapons. Pretty much the late Marian roman army comp.
Because it's really inefficient 😂 Relies too much on big onagers. Lancers to take out enemy cavalry and faster horses to chase down archers. Cant believe how many kills the enemy crossbows got here 😮💨
My army comp is very similar as well, 6 units of cavalry though I prefer shock cavalry over melee cavalry as they kill enemies faster, 6 units of melee infantry, 4 units of spears and 3 large onagers. I don’t use missiles unless I am playing a faction with good quality horse archers or the Sassanids, never found them that useful on the battlefield once I unlock large onagers.

Seeing the amount of money your faction had was an eye-opener, but seeing the amount of food was jaw-dropping. My poor Western Romans have spent the last 100 years eating negative rations while yours are having a feast
Two mistakes that increased your casualties more than necessary. 1. The onagers were auto-targeting the crossbowmen, and inflicted minor casualties. Since your infantry can form testudo and basically ignore ranged attacks, this made the onagers ineffective. Softening up the enemy infantry would've been better and more effective as they are more densily packed (even in loose formation). 2. After the first wave was broken, you should've reformed a line with the infantry. Since it was mostly only crossbows and cav left, forming infantry in line and testudo would've drastically decreased casualties and increased their effectiveness against the enemy cav. It would also lessen the amount of micro-management necessary, and you would be able to focus on cav movements more. Your casualties could probably have been reduced by 30-50% by these things. Additionally, a minor grudge is how the cav was bunched up a bit too much. Attacking one unit with six cav units is overkill and tangles the units up, making it harder to disengage.
Yup great analysis. I would also add never counter charge cav with infantry. Face them the right direction as fast as possible and hit that backspace to brace.
Great to have another video of yours Yrridian! Would be cool if you could upload these kinds of replays in between your shitposting projects (maybe with a bit of commentary for context like in the Alans guide?). Anyways, love your Stuff!

Ok this is quite good and I'll try to find some actual tactics used in real wars and pls correct or fill in if any grievous mistakes: 1: Artillery and main army positions on an elevated ground for better defence and a greater line of fire 2: Using a smaller detachment to deploy behind enemy lines 3: Hiding your main cavalry detachment for surprise attacks on the flanking enemy cavalry 4: Isolating and killing an overconfident general running ahead of his own troops for demoralising and denying the enemy proper leadership (dunno if he was the one caught by the cavalry of your second army or the one trying to flank your main army) 5: Using the main army on the hill as bait until the enemy is committed and does not have fast-moving units to threaten your second onager group 6: Using the second army to draw some enemy infantry from the assault on the main army, dividing the "anvil" on the main force (enemy cavalry as the hammer) and saving the main army from focused assault by superior numbers 7: Multiple uses of defeat in detail (using a larger force to crush individual smaller armies) and preserving a strong cavalry core for pursuing 8: Using the second onager group to hammer the reforming enemy lines All in all, a very good battle and very entertaining to analyze :) P.S. Also is the battle music from Atilla? If so could you tell me pls what track?
Yes it's from attila and it's called "legion of the west" but it's probable that in your own battles you'll hear another version of the song due to the fact that there is what they call dynamic soundtrack.
Wow, controlling 2 full stacks on legendary is beyond what I can do. Although it seems the AI is doing its part to help. Fighting in 2 directions at once is not really its strong suit it seems. It didn't even put up a screening force to guard its rear so you were able to just ride down the general. I was wondering why you don't use groups though? When I foray into playing legendary control groups are a must, plus group attack orders make it easier to order an entire line of units to charge and pick their own targets
Because Yrridian based his strategy on mobility and gangbanging and unit groups don't help with that. The battle tends to devolve into a messy brawl anyway and unit groups would severely limit flanking choices.
I find it so interesting that when people play the wre they actually use their cavalry. I personally think that western rome has potentially the worst cav in the game, but they do have really good range options and very flexible melee units. I love their javelin units so much, because they double as an anti large spear unit up close so i just put them on the flanks as they shred horsies. It works every time.
I usually keep 1 or 2 cav in every army to clean up ranged. Even scout equites get the job done. The AI will rush all their cav into your testimudo wall early in the battle leaving your weak ass scout equites as the only mobile units left. Their back line is only ranged after they commit everything so cav can crush it and hammer/anvil charge the back of their infantry if needed
@@amp8295 Neat. Never noticed that in Attila because I only really encountered shock cav while playing as horse archer oriented factions where it was just too easy to kite and shoot them to death. Makes me wonder how many other little interactions I missed out on due to my playstyles.

It's my personal favourite in the series (with Warhammer II a close second), but it's pretty poorly optimised, and it's really complex in a way that's unfriendly to beginners or people who aren't interested in min-maxing their provinces a bunch. I'm thinking of making a full review at some point, but basically if you like cavalry-heavy warfare, struggling to stay alive against serious challenges, and province management that feels like solving a puzzle then you'll love it, and if those sound bad you'll probably hate it.

Hey is Attila worth a buy?
It's my personal favourite in the series (with Warhammer II a close second), but it's pretty poorly optimised, and it's really complex in a way that's unfriendly to beginners or people who aren't interested in min-maxing their provinces a bunch. I'm thinking of making a full review at some point, but basically if you like cavalry-heavy warfare, struggling to stay alive against serious challenges, and province management that feels like solving a puzzle then you'll love it, and if those sound bad you'll probably hate it.

Damn, the battleground is pretty large compared to Warhammer ones (Even compared to 3K). I can see why cavalry is shit in WH2 now!
