You remind me that I have these books, somewhere 😐Lovely to be reminded! 😬These are lovely aren't they. Thanks as always for sharing!
Looks like a fascinating book! When it comes to trolls and statues, we have very few in Denmark. We do, however, have many many names for nature spirits trolls among these.
Vætter: (a kind of land spirit, though they can also live in huge stones)
Nisser: (a house vætte or house spirit really a "Vætte" that has moved in among people, feed them well an prosper, if you don't your best cow will die - he is vindictive at times)
Huldre: (old female troll, living in old trees usually benign)
Nøkken: (a violin or harp player, male that pulls children into his dead, dark lake with his music and drowns them)
Tuser or Turser: (Troll) "tusmørke" means twilight or the hour where you see the trolls
Jætter: (powerful nature spirits, but also trolls, the old gods "aserne" fight these relentlessly)
Trold: (troll)
Dødningen (the guardian of the grave mount - not a nice fellow)
Valravn (a supernatural raven, who has gained power by eating the flesh of a fallen king)
Helhest (three legged sickly and sometimes headless horse guarding the grave or calling down death upon your family if you see him or her)
Those are just a few - I believe most Scandinavians have this dark part of their nature deep down, we are a silent and brooding lot many of us. Part of our history I guess. But of course also very human. It's all about scaring children so that they do not do stupid things. Very common of course - fables and dark tales are a part of every civilisation.
Woah! Amazing! :D Thank you so much for taking the time to write these all up! Yes! Eat your peas, or the Huldre will getcha! :D I do, however think the lore is fascinating... And might have more to it than just frightening kids into being safe. Hm... I'd want to do a lot more research before asserting that for sure though! :D
This is really a beautiful book. I remember as a child of the 80s having a troll pop up book (I’m guessing the pop up I had was frouds the art work is very similar, and just before you pointed out the connection to the dark crystal I was there thinking this looks very similar to the creatures in the dark crystal, and also labyrinth. Beautiful stuff thank you)
Ah, man, a pop-up book of Froud's art would be AMAZING!
He should start an ASMR channel.
His voice is as smooth as silk.
